For the final episode of our three-part Durkin family trilogy, I'm sitting down with my youngest child, McKenna Durkin, just before she leaves home to begin a brand-new chapter at High Point University (NC). This conversation is special—not only because I get to hear directly from McKenna about her dreams, goals, fears, and excitement for college and Division I lacrosse, but because we also get to flip the script and let her interview me. We talk about the value of hard work, discipline, mindset, controlling the controllables, limiting distractions, the power of networking, and what it really means to believe in yourself when you're stepping into something bigger than anything you've experienced before. As a Dad, this episode is a reminder that raising kids is ultimately about preparing them to spread their wings, chase their dreams, and become who they were created to be. In This Episode, You'll Hear: McKenna's move to High Point University and why she's so excited for this next chapter. What it takes to prepare for the next level of Division I lacrosse—and why "controlling the controllables" matters. The training, recovery, nutrition, sleep, and discipline McKenna has prioritized this summer. Why your environment matters and how the people and places around you can shape who you become. McKenna's approach to nutrition, including whole foods, protein, fruits, vegetables, and enjoying a healthy sweet treat. Why McKenna is choosing to study Exercise Science and her current dream of becoming a physician's assistant. The importance of using college as a time to explore, learn, and discover what you truly love to do. McKenna's biggest excitement—and biggest challenges—as she prepares to leave home and figure things out on her own. Her dreams for the future, including building a career she loves and someday having a lake house. Why some of the best family memories aren't the big trips, but the ordinary moments spent together. The Durkin family's special connection to Whitefish, Montana, and the importance of unplugging, slowing down, and creating quality family time. McKenna flipping the script and asking me some powerful questions—including the one lesson he hopes she has learned from watching me. Why hard work, grit, discipline, and believing in yourself are essential to reaching your goals. How to handle self-doubt when you're surrounded by people who are talented, accomplished, and competing at a high level. The power of focusing on the process instead of putting pressure on yourself to achieve a specific result. Todd's perspective on raising a daughter and the unique bond, love, pride, and protection that comes with being a dad to a girl. Why limiting distractions—especially social media—is critical when you're trying to accomplish something meaningful. The incredible power of networking and why "your network is your net worth." Todd's advice for McKenna as she heads off to college: come home, stay connected, keep getting better, and enjoy the process. A powerful reminder from Proverbs 22 about training a child in the way they should go—and then giving them the freedom to grow and spread their wings. There's something incredibly powerful about watching your kids grow up, develop their own dreams, and step into a future you know you can't completely control. McKenna is about to leave the nest, and while there's certainly some emotion that comes with that, there's also an incredible amount of pride and excitement. My job as a father has never been to create a life for my kids—it's been to equip them with the values, discipline, faith, work ethic, and confidence to go create their own. McKenna, I am so proud of you. Go chase the dream. Go compete. Go learn. Go build relationships. Go get better every single day. And most importantly, enjoy the PROCESS of becoming the woman you're meant to be. The next chapter is just beginning—and I can't wait to watch you spread your wings and create your IMPACT. For Lyndsey Ayers, High Point has always been home. As a proud T. W. Andrews High School graduate, Lyndsey has fond memories of her years growing up in High Point. From cheering the Red Raiders onto a 2003 basketball championship victory, to attending the University of North Carolina Greensboro, Lyndsey never had the urge to venture far from the Triad. "The trend for all of our friends at that time was, 'Let's get out of High Point,'" she says, recalling classmates and friends who wanted to spread their wings and fly. But for Lyndsey, one distinct aspect of High Point caught her interest and gave her a new curiosity about her hometown. "In 2005, when Dr. Qubein came, he was blazing a trail," she says. High Point University, under Dr. Nido Qubein's leadership, was in a pivotal and pioneering phase. Dr. Qubein's appointment to the role of president at the university ushered in a new era of growth for HPU and ultimately the city of High Point itself. To read this story, visit: https://www.highpointdiscovered.org/stories/To learn more about HPU's Community Events, visit: https://www.highpoint.edu/community/engagement/About High Point Discovered:High Point Discovered is a 501(c)3, a grass-roots non-profit dedicated to communicating the stories of High Point, NC, to connect citizens and catalyze economic growth.  To discover more stories about High Point, visit https://www.highpointdiscovered.org/Each High Point Discovered story is made possible and accessible through our community like you. On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I sit down with Chris Hodges, founder and former lead pastor of Church of the Highlands and current chancellor of Highlands College, for an inspiring conversation around his new book, Legacy Letters: Timeless Principles I Learned, Lived, and Leave Behind.   Chris shares the heart and story behind Legacy Letters—a collection of the values, wisdom, and practical principles he's lived, taught, and now wants to pass on to the next generation. From humble beginnings and a move inspired by faith, Chris built one of America's largest churches and is now pouring his energy into developing world-class ministry leaders through Highlands College. We dive deep into his journey: the transition from building to leaving a legacy, the intentional handoff of pastoral leadership, and his mission to equip future generations for impact. Throughout our discussion, Chris reveals the foundational ideas that shaped his leadership—like the Big Rocks Principle, the power of margin, the importance of consistency, and the value of relationships and collaboration. He shares personal stories about overcoming self-doubt, stewarding influence, and the ways excellence shows others they matter. Chris also opens up about his philosophy on mentorship, building teams, and how faith shapes every principle he teaches.   Whether you're leading a team, building a family, or seeking purpose in this stage of your journey, this conversation is a powerful testament that true legacy is about investing in people, living your values daily, and leaving something meaningful behind. You'll walk away challenged to clarify your own priorities, cultivate excellence, and become a leader who multiplies impact for generations to come.   About Chris: Chris Hodges is a pastor, mentor, and author who has dedicated his life to helping people grow in their faith, develop as leaders, and build life-giving communities. He is the Founder and Chancellor of Highlands College, Found Pastor of Church of the Highlands, Founder of GrowLeader, and Co-Founder of the Association of Related Churches (ARC). Church of the Highlands In 2001, Chris and Tammy, along with a small group of people, gathered in a high school auditorium with a simple desire – to create a place where people could experience God's presence, find community, and step into their purpose. That gathering became Church of the Highlands, a church committed to helping people know God, find freedom, discover purpose, and make a difference. By God's grace, Highlands has grown over the years into a multi-campus church in 26 locations serving communities across Alabama and Georgia, offering 75+ weekly services, and giving more than $162 million to missions and charitable causes worldwide. In 2025, after more than two decades of leadership, Chris transitioned the role of Lead Pastor to Mark Pettus, allowing him to focus more on mentoring leaders and investing in the next generation. He continues to serve Highlands as Founding Pastor. Highlands College – America's Ministry Leadership University Chris has always had a heart for equipping young leaders for ministry. In 2011, he founded Highlands College, which has since grown into a fully accredited, academy-model ministry leadership college. Inspired by Luke 2:10, Highlands College is dedicated to developing leaders of competence and character to fulfill the Great Commission. Students receive a holistic education that blends: Academic instruction Ministry training Character formation Spiritual development More than 1,300 graduates have been placed in more than 370 churches and ministries across 38 states and 21 countries. GrowLeader – Coaching Leaders and Equipping Churches Understanding the challenges that pastors and church leaders face, Chris created GrowLeader, a coaching network dedicated to training leaders and resourcing churches. Through conferences, roundtables, and leadership coaching, GrowLeader provides practical tools and biblical strategies to help churches grow in a healthy, sustainable way. GrowLeader now has global impact, including: 22,000+ churches served in 100+ countries 4,000+ pastors and leaders trained annually Association of Related Churches (ARC) – Church Planting In 2001, Chris co-founded ARC (Association of Related Churches) with a group of pastors who shared a heart for starting life-giving churches in communities that need them. Through coaching, support, and relationships, ARC has helped plant over 1,150 churches across the U.S. and trains more than 1,000 church planters annually. Writing and Teaching Chris is a bestselling author who is passionate about making biblical truth practical and accessible, and he has written several books to encourage believers in their spiritual growth. His works include: The Daniel Dilemma – standing firm while loving well in a culture of compromise Four Cups – understanding the promises of God for every believer Out of the Cave – finding hope in the midst of depression Pray First – living a life centered on prayer What's Next? – following practical steps for growing in faith Fresh Air – experiencing spiritual renewal Jesus, The High Road Leader (co-authored with John C. A Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists with over 100 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Bencharit also serves as president of HADEN — the Haptic and AI in Dental Education Network — connecting more than 70 educators worldwide. The conversation opens by demystifying "haptics" — the virtual-reality, flight-simulator-style training that lets students feel the difference between drilling enamel and dentin, turning passive learning into muscle memory before they ever touch a patient. Dr. Bencharit argues that the single biggest barrier keeping dental schools from modernizing isn't money or expertise, but fear. He shares how he digitized VCU's dental school — flipping a program that once took 79 days to deliver a single crown into one where students routinely complete same-day, in-house digital restorations — and stresses that the real key wasn't machines, but workflow. Howard and Dr. Bencharit dig into what a truly future-ready dental school looks like, the core digital skills every new graduate should master (intraoral scanning, 3D printing, same-day restorations, and implant planning with guided surgery), and why robotic implant placement is now the most accurate method available. They also take on the AI debate head-on — with Dr. Bencharit explaining that dentistry has quietly used AI for years, that generalists will increasingly perform work once reserved for specialists, and that his real concern isn't AI replacing jobs but its potential to fabricate undetectable research. The episode closes with a passionate discussion on the maldistribution of dentists, the crushing burden of student debt, and why subsidized dental education — like the tuition-free residency model at the Austin Institute — may be essential to serving underserved communities.   Episode #1712 : Dentistry Uncensored with Howard Farran, Howard sits down with Dr. Sompop Bencharit — board-certified prosthodontist, innovation strategist, and president of HADEN, the world's largest community advancing haptic and AI technologies in dental education. From flight-simulator-style "haptic" training and same-day digital dentistry, to why he says fear is the #1 barrier holding dental schools back, to how AI will reshape all 12 specialties — this is a candid look at where dental education must go next.

In this episode, host Phil Friedrich sits down with Dexter Gooding — assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Tampa and NBA pre-draft trainer — to trace a career built on relentless preparation, high character, and a deep commitment to developing others. Dexter opens up about growing up in Daytona Beach, Florida, where he earned a black belt in martial arts before channeling that same discipline into basketball. Despite not being a highly recruited prospect, he earned a preferred walk-on spot at High Point University — a decision shaped in part by the campus itself, which he describes as nothing short of extraordinary. He spent two and a half years without playing time before cracking the rotation late in his junior year, going on to play for the legendary Coach Tubby Smith, whose simple philosophy — just do what you're told and maximize the opportunity in front of you — left a lasting impression.By his sophomore year, Dexter had already recognized that his future was on the coaching side of the game. He began running workouts for his own teammates during winter break, planting the seed for what would become a second career as a sought-after player developer. His break into NBA pre-draft training came by chance during COVID, when a friend's trainer didn't show up and Dexter stepped in — impressing the agent on the sideline. From there, word of mouth took over. He's since helped players like Jaime Jaquez Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies), Anton Watson (Gonzaga), and Dylan Cardwell (Sacramento Kings) find their way onto NBA rosters. His coaching philosophy centers on detail and communication — breaking down concepts in ways players haven't heard before, layering in metaphors and illustrations to make ideas stick. He tailors every program to the individual, whether that's sharpening a niche skill for a role player or building out a full game for an overseas star. The conversation closes with a look at Dexter's work at the University of Tampa, where the staff navigated a difficult 8-win first season before flipping to 20 wins, an NCAA tournament appearance, and a national ranking in year two. He credits a relationship-first culture — and the example coaches set every day — as the engine behind that turnaround. With 15 of 16 players returning next season, he's optimistic about what's ahead. And his long-term goal? He puts it plainly: multiple Division I national championships as a head coach. He doesn't know exactly how he'll get there, but he's certain it's coming. To View This Episode- https://youtu.be/Dvm2iie8l70 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What if growth is less about adding more… and more about removing what frustrates people? In this episode, Ryan shares a powerful leadership principle from Dr. Nido Qubein, president of High Point University. While many private colleges have struggled or even closed in recent years, High Point has grown enrollment and built a waiting list of thousands. One of the hallmarks behind that success? A simple commitment to removing irritants. From building an arcade on campus when students kept leaving on weekends, to paving a walkway along the path students were already taking, this episode explores how small friction points quietly drain energy, morale, and momentum.Whether you lead a company, a team, a family, or just yourself, this conversation will challenge you to ask one practical question: What is the most annoying thing people around me deal with, and how can I remove it?Sometimes the greatest leadership move is not adding something extraordinary. It is eliminating something ordinary that has been irritating people for years.

How does storytelling build authority - and where's the line between authenticity and vulnerability? On this episode of Behind The Numbers With Dave Bookbinder, Dave Bookbinder is joined by Autumn Karen - filmmaker, journalist, ghostwriter, educator, and author of The Surrogate Author - for a deep dive into the power of narrative and the responsibility that comes with it. Autumn explains why “words are power,” how storytelling shapes credibility, and why leaders often misunderstand what it really means to be authentic. The conversation explores how personal and professional narratives are constructed, curated, and sometimes compromised in the pursuit of visibility and influence. Dave and Autumn unpack the craft and ethics of ghostwriting, including empathy-driven collaboration, capturing a client's voice through a method-acting approach, editorial decision-making, contracts, and what business owners should know before hiring a ghostwriter or committing to a book project. They also discuss the current and future role of AI in writing and creative work, mentorship and teaching lessons from the classroom, and why writing a book can bring clarity, confidence, and authority to leaders - when done the right way. Autumn shares insights from her deeply personal animated short Infinity Care, offering a candid look at balancing creative ambition with emotional labor, and explains what readers can expect from The Surrogate Author - a practical, textbook-style guide covering craft, business practices, and ethics for ghostwriters in the age of AI. Oh and listen to Aransas' assessement of Love Shack Fancy. Takeaways High Point University is setting a new trend in education. Transformational experiences are key to preparing students for careers. Parents play a crucial role in educational choices. The focus should be on life skills, not just degrees. Higher education needs to adapt to changing societal needs. Universities must understand their customer base. A degree should be seen as an output, not an outcome. Colleges need to differentiate themselves in a competitive market.
