Hello everybody! On today's show we had on Special Guest Kathleen Lopez! Katie is a mother, dietician and a woman of Christ. She had lived her entire life with digestive issues until she discovered the diet that fit her best. She had tried vegan and vegetarian for years, but that still didn't help her stomach issues. It wasn't until she discovered keto that she was free from the ills of food. Now she helps people regain their health by making positive choices that are best for their body. In today's episode Katie gives us a run down of what she was suffering through as a child, up until she was 35 years old. We get in-depth into her dietary woes and Mimi asks some great questions that really can help women with dietary issues they may be having. We also finish it up with talking about some very strange occurrences in Katie's family lineage. From having the name John Dee run in her family as well as the Boy's Town School that was part of the Franklin Scandal and even orphan trains, she has a unique look into these "conspiracy theories" that are being uncovered. I had the pleasure of interviewing Kathleen Lopez via Zoom app thanks to quarantine. From Kathleen: Creative writing and telling stories have always been passions of mine. I often say that my first book, Between the Shades of Light and Dark, initially started as a homework assignment in college that got wildly out of control. My characters are not based on anyone in particular but can exhibit particular personality quirks I've come to experience. I try to make my characters real enough for the reader to care about them; they become so real, in fact, that I become more of a biographer than fiction writer, capturing the stories of their lives. The genres of murder-mystery, crime, thriller, suspense, paranormal, and others that lie in the ‘realm of creepy’ provide such interesting canvases to explore as a writer; opening up vast amounts of possibilities. I strive to make each story a journey to be experienced. Thriller writer Kathleen Lopez is the author of several novels and short stories, including Between the Shades of Light and Dark. That story began as a college homework assignment, but it was relegated to Kathleen's bucket list. 18 years later, she picked up where she left off, and her novel was finally published. Tune in to hear Kathleen chat about her writing journey, how her method of creating stories strongly resembles a game of Clue, and how having a good teacher and mentor can make all the difference.

Successive waves of migration brought thousands of Chinese laborers to Cuba over the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The coolie trade, which was meant to replace waning supplies of slaves, was but the first. In the twentieth century, a sugar boom in Cuba facilitated the entry of thousands more. Many of these itinerant workers stayed, and this book uses Chinese and Spanish languages sources and microhistorical methods to trace their lives as they married, raised children, formed associations and ran businesses. Kathleen Lopez‘s book Chinese Cubans, A Transnational History (University of North Carolina Press, 2013) asks questions about belonging and offers a nuanced interpretation of the ways people of Chinese descent could proffer loyalties to Cuba even as they were embedded in transnational Chinese networks. There are surprising stories here, about race, family and work. Next time you encounter a Chinese-Cuban restaurant, you’ll know a little more about how it got there. Learn more about your ad choices.
