    Body composition changes are easier for some people to make than others. However, that doesn't mean that they're impossible for everyone else. In this episode, I'm discussing the barriers to success when we're trying to make a body composition change, including mental, emotional, and physical barriers. Things like our mindset, perception of time, a tendency towards emotional eating, and the blindspots in our nutrition audits.   Barriers to Successful Body Composition Change Mindset Perception of Time The Scale Thought Distortions Emotional Eating Blindspots in your Nutrition Audit Inconsistent Weekends   Barriers to Body Composition Changes When it comes to making body composition changes, we need to look at what's going on inside your body, not just what's getting reflected on the scale. In fact, the scale does not give an accurate look at body composition changes at all. We need to look at your lean mass to body fat ratio, waist circumference, and measurement changes to accurately see any body composition changes. Not thinking you have enough time to make a change is one of the barriers to body composition change. You can start positively changing your body composition in as little as ten minutes a day. It's all about making consistent changes that you can keep long-term.   Emotional and Physical Barriers Thought distortions and should statements are another barrier to body composition changes. Thinking you should be following this diet, or eating in that way, or that you should have lost more weight by now is detrimental to making the changes you want. Emotional eating, or eating when you're not actually hungry, is another barrier, especially if you're eating over and above your total daily energy expenditure. Not taking account of your dietary blindspots during a nutrition audit can also be a barrier to body composition changes. I find that most people overeat dietary fat, eat too little protein, eat too much-added sugar, and eat too little fiber to make successful changes to their body composition. We are making this happen. And we need to celebrate this.” [17:08] “If you are using emotional eating as a coping mechanism and eating beyond your total daily energy expenditure, then you are not going to have a positive body composition result. Not to mention that if you are having a lot of these negative emotions, you're probably going to have a higher stress response and more circulating cortisol.” [20:58] “Optimal body composition, even as we age, is available. There are simple tools to help you get there, and one of the most important things you can start thinking about is the physical, mental, and emotional barriers to success.” [30:51] “We can have tons of barriers and make these big stories about how it's so much harder for us, but at the end of the day, all we have to do is gain awareness for who we are authentically and uniquely.     Strength training and cardiovascular activity don't have to be in competition with each other. However, strength training is a more effective method to reach your optimal body composition unless you're doing high-intensity cardio activities. Any movement is better than no movement, so it comes down to finding something you enjoy doing and building a consistent routine around it.   How to Lose Visceral Fat High-Intensity Interval Training Nutrition Strength training Understand your body type Fat storage patterns   Strength Training Builds Lean Muscle Mass Strength training is an essential part of achieving optimal body composition. While cardio works your overall aerobic health for the duration you're doing cardio activities, strength training builds your muscles after you've finished lifting weights. In this episode, I discuss how strength training builds lean muscle mass, leading to optimal body composition. By creating microtears in the muscles and then those muscles repairing, strength training builds stronger, leaner muscles.   Take Your First Step into Strength Training How much strength training you must do varies based on your goals, but you can see the benefits from as little as three weekly twenty-minute lifting sessions. This isn't to say you shouldn't do cardio. In fact, high-intensity interval training and high-intensity steady-state training will have similar long-term benefits to your muscles and contribute to your cardiovascular health. Knowing where to start might be daunting if you've never lifted weights before. This is where setting your baseline minimum exercise is important. I finish up this episode by talking about some of the other obstacles women may face when starting a strength training routine. How do you love to move your body? Start with the smallest amount that you're willing to do on a consistent basis. It does. But then, when you're done with the cardio, you're done burning calories.” [14:06] “Research and science show that High-Intensity Interval Training is going to be the most effective for a decrease in visceral fat. That's the fat that we can see.” [21:25] “While strength training is more of the investment, you still can get some good quality work in with just cardio if you're using the strategies of High-Intensity Interval and High-Intensity Steady-State.” [28:16] “The strength training is going to be the more optimal approach, and the ‘work smarter, not harder' strategy to optimal body composition. There is a place for strength training, and there is a place for cardiovascular exercise. Is a potato  just  sugar? If you have specific health or fitness goals, it's best to consult with a nutritionist.  ∙Beware of diet mentality. A lot of people may not be on a labelled diet, but they do  adopt the mindset of a dieter. It's important to be aware of the psychology behind  certain beliefs or punishments that rule your interactions with food. For instance, having  “a little extra” because you ate a slice of cake and “ruined” the day is one of the biggest  sabotagers in one's path to living a consistently healthier lifestyle. Having “addictions” to  certain foods like chocolate warrant a closer look as well: Perhaps you're just placing  chocolate on a pedestal because you've put it on the “forbidden list”? The common  thread between all of these thoughts is a tendency to blame ourselves as helpless when  it comes to eating healthier, which does nothing more than lead us down a vicious cycle  of making the wrong choices and subsequently punishing ourselves for them.  ∙The key to intuitive eating is aiming toward authentic well-being. This holistic approach  to food requires you to take what your body is communicating to you in real-time and  blend that with objective, scientific principles on nutrition, instead of simply looking for  a one-size-fits-all diet.

    Exactly how important is protein for our bodies? It's absolutely essential. But how much protein are you supposed to eat every day? And what kinds of protein are the good ones? In this episode, I cover all these questions and more, including vegetarian protein options, what one serving of protein looks like, and protein's vital role in maintaining an optimal weight.   What Goes Into Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) BMR + Thermogenesis of food  Planned exercise Unplanned exercise EPOC - post-exercise consumption of oxygen   Protein is an Essential Nutrient Protein is vital for our body's optimal composition. When I speak about optimal body composition, I don't mean six-pack abs… I mean a lean body mass that works for your body. Adequate protein is essential for us to maintain a lean body mass, especially as we age. Protein also helps keep us feeling fuller and more satiated for longer. Protein contains nonessential amino acids, like leucine and glycine, that contribute to a healthy metabolism, digestion, hormone balance, and so much more.   The Amount of Protein We Need But how much protein do you actually need? There is so much information out there about optimal amounts of protein… but I recommend 3-4 servings per day. This is around 90g - 120g of protein, which is a decent amount for most body types, depending on your activity level. One serving of animal protein is about the size of your palm, including the thickness. Plenty of vegetarian protein options are available, but you might need to adjust the amount you eat to get enough protein. Lentils have the highest amount of leucine per gram.  I don't recommend one source of protein over the other. I encourage you to find what protein sources make you feel your best and eat those.
