Scott and Mickey discuss the very bizarre story of James Jesse Strang, founder of the now-defunct city of Voree, WI in Walworth County. Strang claimed to be the rightful heir to the leader of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, after its founder, Joseph Smith, was gunned down in 1844. After claiming he was shown where to find buried ancient texts in Voree by visions of angels, Strang amassed a following of thousands who praised him as a prophet of God and eventually crowned him as their king - in the only royal coronation ever held on American soil. Corrupted by a rule of absolute power, Strang's "royal" reign was strewn with violence, greed, and deciept, as his followers began to conspire against him, and even the then President of the United States schemed to take him down. Learn about this fascinating personality in American history on episode 21 of Badger Bizarre, "The Reign of King Strang." How the Great Lakes were formed. While a very cool story in and of itself (so much ice the winter king would wet himself with glee), the formation of the Great Lakes and the land around them informs all of the history we'll be covering this season.
We get into the piracy on the Great Lakes done during the Revolutionary period and move forward to it's role in the civil war.
Who needs parrots in a region with plenty of crows. The fresh water pirates of the Great Lakes provide a refreshingly fresh look at the traditionally scurvy salt water occupation of plundering piracy. It's all about aaaargggggitude in this podcast as we look at a rare form of piracy rarely discussed, a pirate king, dominant fleets that plundered far and wide, historic new directions and a boat stealing, cannon shooting, Yooper pirate captain - who couldn't lose for getting totally busted.
A Mormon priest-king sows discord among his followers, his island, and the people of Michigan. Who shot King Strang?
As a child, James Strang, set out to be a lawyer, a priest, a legislator, and a king. Bold ambitions for an American boy, but King Strang of Beaver Island met every one. In addition, he had at least 4 wives, in a plural marriage.
