Welcome to Part 32 of our series with Dr. John G Turner, based on his new book Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet. In this episode, Dr. Turner response directly to modern claims denying Joseph Smith's plural marriage to Sarah Ann Whitney. We revisit Chapter 26 of his book, carefully examining the historical record surrounding the 1842 letter often associated with Sarah Ann Whitney, the language of sealing and “fulness of blessings,” the land deed, and the broader documentary context of Nauvoo-era plural marriage. We also engage with alternative interpretations, including arguments that question whether the letter refers to polygamy at all. Drawing on Turner's scholarship as well as Karen Hyatt's analysis, this discussion models how historians weight evidence, examine primary sources, and wrestle with ambiguity. What constitutes strong documentation? How do historians interpret silence, denials, and later public statements? And how should we think about the broader context of Joseph Smith's practice of plural marriage in Nauvoo?Along the way, we explore the legal crisis surrounding the alleged assassination attempt on Lilburn Boggs, the Nauvoo writ of habeas corpus, the Sarah Ann Whitney Letter, Public denials and private sealings, sham marriages and the case of Joseph Kingsbury, documentation involving the Partridge sisters and why serious historical inquiry requires both skepticism and careful contextualization. We invite you to read Chapter 26 alongside this discussion and let us know your thoughts in the comments. To read Karen Hyatt's interpretation download her free book here: https://josephtoldthetruth.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Woe-Unto-You-Scribes.pdfTo watch Karen Hyatt's video, “The Worst Love Letter… EVER!” click here.Let us know in the comments how you interpret the evidence. Please purchase the book here.To support this series please donate here. In the beginning God created man in His image, male and female He created them. This is part of the dance of life, but mankind also quickly fell and now struggles and toils with the Genesis curse. The New Testament also brings a fulfillment of all things and a spiritual kingdom, so how are we to understand marriage, dating, divorce and sexuality in a biblical, narrow road way? Today we will examine all of these topics and see what scripture has to say. * 00:00 - Introduction* 10:08 - My Journey* 46:55 - The Biblical Standard for Love* 1:15:22 - Dating Principles* 1:42:45 - Monergism & Dating* 2:11:51 - Masturbation* 2:33:16 - Birth Control* 2:39:08 - Oral Sex, Anal Sex, Kinks* 2:42:51 - Marriage* 2:46:23 - The Definition & Purpose of Marriage* 3:08:18 - Polygamy* 3:20:30 - Marriage & The Gospel* 4:04:23 - Adultery, Divorce & Re-Marriage* 4:35:37 - Partnership * 5:51:45 - Final Thoughts This is a public episode. Welcome to Episode 30 of our series The Joseph Smith Podcast with Dr. John Turner where we discuss chapters from his new book “Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet.”In this episode, we dive further into Chapter 24 (“Upper Rooms”) from John Turner's work and unpack the origins of the LDS Relief Society in May of 1842 –right in the middle of Joseph Smith's secret practice of polygamy. We explore whether the Relief Society was meant to empower women, function as a stepping stone to priesthood-like authority, or help manage rumors and moral fallout from Nauvoo's growing scandals. From Emma Smith's complicated position, to whispered accusations, to the infamous “Happiness Letter,” this conversation traces how secrecy, power, and polygamy collide –and what it all says about Joseph Smith's character. We also look at whistleblowers, public denials, internal investigations (or lack thereof), and how victims and critics were treated when scandals became impossible to contain. This is part Mormon history, part true crime, and part moral reckoning –with big questions about leadership, secrecy, and accountability. In the final segment, the Ericksons tackle the practical side of raising kids in polygamy. They discuss whether they expect their kids to be polygamists, the role of their ministry, and the lingering trauma that keeps many fundamentalist groups secretive. Their goal is to raise sons who are such good husbands that “more than one woman would want to be with them,” but the choice is ultimately theirs. 04:00 – Heaven on Earth: Joshua rejects the idea that a miserable marriage now will magically become a happy polygamous one in heaven. He emphasizes that the “same sociality” exists there as here, so marriages must be happy now. 08:00 – Keeping the Faith: The parents focus on instilling a love for biblical feasts and God rather than loyalty to a specific group. They hope their children avoid atheism and maintain a connection to their Israelite heritage. 12:00 – Mormon Legacy Ministries Logistics: Joshua details his role as a bishop for the ministry. They hold services on Saturdays and Thursdays via Zoom to accommodate people transitioning out of other groups. 18:00 – A Bishop Without a Church: Joshua explains that he handles temporal needs (tithes/offerings) but does not perform ordinances or interviews for the ministry, acting more as a referral service for those seeking baptism or marriage. 22:00 – Generational Trauma: Charlotte addresses why many fundamentalists remain secretive and insular. She highlights the history of government prosecution and the fear of having children taken away, noting that until 2020, polygamy was a felony in Utah.
Kody and Janelle reminisce about their toxic beginning with Meri, Christine and David bloviate about how bad polygamy is, Meri calls out Janelle for being a homewrecker and Robyn is so uncomfortable she looks constipated. People are starting to wake up to this, and call it for what it truly is, but I still think they're hedging too much. They're not going all the way, because many people are ignorant of the freedom-obsessed sea in which they swim. This is a hugely important topic that will impact how our kids and grandkids grow up and experience life, and I want to call it out right now: We're moving into a period where there will be a cultural war between polygamy and monogamy as the Christian sexual ethic continues to be cast off in our society. In this episode I break down a recent article and share why this is so devastating and why Christians still have the best response, as long as we actually respond. The largest group of Mormon polygamists don’t belong to a group! I’m talking to the Ericksons: Joshua, Charlotte, & Melissa who purchased the Sister Wives home from Kody Brown and his 4 wives from the TLC channel. We’ll talk about the resources independent Mormon fundamentalists can participate in, how they got their authority to do polygamy, and talk about priesthood in their family. Check out our conversation… https://youtu.be/7itxEX5H8nk Don’t miss our interviews with Mormon polygamists: https://gospeltangents.com/denominations/fundamentalim/ I sat down with the Erickson family—Joshua, Melissa, and Charlotte—independent Mormon fundamentalists who purchased the Lehi, Utah home formerly owned by Kody Brown of TLC’s Sister Wives. The Ericksons discuss their journey from mainstream LDS Church membership to independent polygamy, their blog Speaking of Polygamy, and their efforts to restore biblical feasts and practices. 00:00 – Welcome to the Sister Wives Brown Hotel: The Ericksons, who now live in the home designed for polygamy discuss the unique architecture, which includes connected apartments that facilitate communal living. 08:00 – Excommunication & New Fellowship: The family shares their transition out of the LDS Church. While they were excommunicated, they describe the experience as cordial and devoid of hard feelings. They soon found the Zarahemla Foundation, a non-denominational fellowship for restoration believers. 14:00 – Defining Independent Fundamentalism: Joshua explains that fundamentalism isn’t just about polygamy; it is about preserving original restoration principles. They discuss the misconception that leaving the church means losing opportunities to serve, arguing they have found even more ways to be “anxiously engaged”. 18:00 – Restoring the Feasts: We did a deep dive into why the Ericksons celebrate ancient Israelite holidays like Passover, the Feast of Tabernacles, and Yom Kippur. Joshua provides scriptural justification from Zechariah 14 and the JST of Luke 22, arguing these feasts are for all of Israel, not just the Jews. 26:00 – Wine Making & The Word of Wisdom: The family discusses their wine-making classes. They adhere to D&C 89 and Section 27, believing wine should be “of your own make” for sacraments, rather than water. 32:00 – Mormon Legacy Ministries: Introduction to a broad coalition of independent fundamentalists who provide a “soft landing” and fellowship for those questioning mainstream changes. 36:00 – The Temple in Missouri: The Ericksons recount their participation in the independent temple built near Humansville, Missouri, describing the celestial room’s fiber-optic star field and the dedication they felt among independent groups.

I was surprised to learn that Troy Ables passed away on Thursday, Jan 15, 2026. In this special episode I'm sharing a previously unpublished interview from October 2020 to honor the memory of Troy Ables, a YouTuber and podcaster known for “The Last Dispensation,” who passed away suddenly around the age of 54. In a reversal of roles, Troy interviews Rick, delving into Rick's personal history, his views on controversial church topics, and the evolution of Mormon historical transparency. https://youtu.be/l8GdztsUrZU 0:00 Generational Shifts and Literature The conversation highlights the generational differences in how Latter-day Saints engage with church literature. Troy recounts devouring Bruce R. McConkie's “Mormon Doctrine” and “The Miracle of Forgiveness” as a youth, while I admitted to avoiding them, viewing them as sources of unnecessary guilt or false doctrine. We discuss how the Church has shifted from the politically conservative era of the 1980s to a modern era characterized by greater openness, exemplified by the release of the Gospel Topics Essays. 8:59 Polygamy vs. Sealing A significant portion of the interview focuses on plural marriage. I tried to articulate a clear distinction between the sealing power, which I support and finds beautiful, and the practice of polygamy, which I'm not a fan of. Specific issues such as Joseph Smith's marriage to Fanny Alger and the secrecy kept from Emma Smith as reasons for discomfort. I don't agree with the apologetic defense that Joseph was merely sealing families together, noting the sexual component and the sneakiness involved. 11:57 Nuance, History, and “The Middle Way” I maintain my testimony while acknowledging historical difficulties. I have a problem with the “we don’t know” defense used by some apologists, arguing that we do know certain uncomfortable facts—such as Joseph Smith being a “terrible money manager” regarding the Kirtland Safety Society. Instead, it seems better to accept Joseph Smith as an inspired but imperfect human being. 16:31 Church Discipline The discussion also touches on the treatment of intellectuals and dissidents, such as the “September Six.” The Church has been inconsistent approach to discipline and reinstatement, contrasting the rebaptism of Maxine Hanks with the denial of Lavina Fielding Anderson. I hope that the Church is becoming more tolerant of diverse voices than it has in the past. The contributions of scholars like Matt Harris and Margaret Toscano deserve great praise. 19:38 Gospel Topics Essays Origin and Purpose The essays were initiated under Church Historian Elder Marlin Jensen and continued by his successor, Elder Steven E. Snow. They were created as a direct response to the explosion of the internet, where members were encountering disturbing information about Church history that was causing them to lose their testimonies. The goal was to provide fficial good information” on difficult subjects such as the translation of the Book of Mormon, race and the priesthood, and the Mountain Meadows Massacre. The “Quiet” Launch Rick explains that the Church purposely did not advertise the essays when they were first published (roughly between 2012 and 2015). According to Elder Snow, leadership wanted the answers to be available for those who were struggling, but they feared that broadcasting the essays might cause testimony loss among members who were not previously aware of the controversies. Handling Polygamy A significant portion of the discussion focuses on the three essays regarding polygamy. Rick gives the Church credit for admitting to difficult facts, such as Joseph Smith's practice of polyandry (marrying women who were already married) and his marriage to teenage brides. However, Rick notes that some language appeared “softened” by leadership; for example, the essays described a 14-year-old bride as being “in her 15th year” to make it sound less jarring. Overall Assessment Despite some critiques, Rick views the essays as “leaps and bounds better” than what was available in previous decades. He mentions that historian Matt Harris (along with Margaret Toscano) has written a book critiquing the essays, highlighting that while they are a vast improvement, there are still areas where the essays are weak or where the Church is hesitant to fully engage.

Welcome to episode 27 of the Joseph Smith Podcast with Dr. John G. Turner! In this episode, we take a deep dive into Joseph Smith's early practice of polygamy in Nauvoo, tracing how it began, how it expanded so rapidly, and what it reveals about power, belief, and risk.We examine the first plural marriages, the people Joseph trusted to introduce the practice, and the recurring patterns that emerge as polygamy spreads among church leadership. Along the way, we ask difficult questions about revelation, consent, secrecy, scripture, and whether Joseph believed his actions were divinely required –or something else entirely. This discussion also situates polygamy within the broader political and social pressures Joseph faced in the early 1840s, including legal threats, growing opposition, and his increasing confidence and recklessness as Nauvoo flourished. Ultimately, we explore whether Joseph's polygamy can be understood as sincere belief, institutional experimentation, abuse of authority, or some combination of all three. If you find this series valuable, consider liking, subscribing, and sharing. Welcome to Part 26 of our Joseph Smith Podcast series! In this episode, we continue our deep dive into Chapter 22 of John Turner's new biography, Joseph Smith: The Rise and Fall of an American Prophet, as the story moves to the founding of Nauvoo, Illinois in 1840 –a fresh start for the Latter-day Saints and a turning point in Joseph Smith's theology and authority. We explore the emergence of baptism for the dead, one of the most distinctive doctrines introduced in Nauvoo, and how Joseph Smith framed proxy ordinances as answers to grief, death, and eternal family bonds. From New Testament passages to Adam Clarke's biblical commentary, we examine how this doctrine developed, why the Saints embraced it so enthusiastically, and how it eventually became tied to the temple. This episode also covers the doctrine of re-baptism, a ritual that allowed faithful members to recommit repeatedly, and what this reveals about early Mormon ideas of salvation, renewal, and belonging. We also introduce one of the most controversial figures of the Nauvoo period: John C. Bennett –a charismatic leader with a scandalous past whose rise and fall would have lasting consequences for Nauvoo, Joseph Smith, and the Church's political and legal standing.Along the way, we discuss Nauvoo's utopian hopes, strange theological ideas, spiritual experimentation, the growing power of the Nauvoo militia (and Joseph Smith), and the seeds of opposition that will eventually lead to Joseph Smith's death. Join us in the next episode for our discussion on Polygamy! Please purchase the book here.To support this series please donate here. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Brigham Young and other LDS church leaders taught that Jesus was begotten by God the Father in a literal sense, in the same way everyone is physically conceived. This is consistent with the broader view that God possesses a tangible, physical body. And that eternal sex and child bearing is part of the next life for those in the highest levels of the Celestial Kingdom. Church leaders at the time did not provide a detailed or explanation of the encounter between God and Mary, but implied that Christ's conception followed natural laws rather than being a nebulous, immaterial miracle. Where did this idea of a physical conception come from? Mormonish is joined by Ganesh Cherian and Master Peace to discuss the influence of polygamy (in this life and the next,) on the unique view of 19th and 20th century church leaders that Jesus was conceived by some sort of physical act between God and Mary. ***How to DONATE to Mormonish Podcast: If you would like to help financially support our podcast, you can DONATE to support Mormonish Podcast here: DONATE THROUGH DONORBOX https://donorbox.org/mormonish-podcast Mormonish Podcast is a 501(c) (3) ****WE HAVE MERCH! **** If you'd like to purchase Mormonish Merch, you can visit our Merch store here: https://www.etsy.com/shop/mormonishmerch We appreciate our Mormonish viewers and listeners so much! In this in-depth conversation, John sits down with Karen Hyatt to explore her lifelong faith journey in the LDS Church and the research that ultimately led to her excommunication. Karen shares her background as a devoted member -convert parents, mission service, leadership roles, and decades without doubt –before explaining what prompted her to closely examine Doctrine and Covenants 132 and the history of polygamy. The discussion traces Karen's deep divine into church history, including the Book of Mormon's condemnation of polygamy, early revelations, the Nauvoo Expositor, William Clayton's journals, Emma Smith's role, and conclusions reached by modern LDS historians. Karen explains why she ultimately rejected D&C 132, why she believes Joseph Smith did NOT practice polygamy, and how she responds to accusations of bias or conspiracy thinking.Karen also walks through the personal and institutional consequences of speaking publicly: compiling and sending her research to the Apostles (and their wives!), creating videos, disciplinary councils, losing her temple recommend, and being barred from paying tithing –while still choosing to attend church and value her ward community. The episode examines broader themes of authority, misinformation, prophetic fallibility, confirmation bias, and whether faith can exist without institutional silence. This episode is a candid, emotionally grounded look at belief, dissent, and the cost of challenging one of Mormonism's most controversial doctrines.Karen has compiled her research into a book titled “Woe Unto You, Scribes: The Hidden History of Polygamy.” You can order a spiral bound notebook online by emailing her: WoeUntoYouScribes@gmail.comTo find a PDF version of her book click here: https://josephtoldthetruth.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Woe-Unto-You-Scribes.pdfPlease purchase the book here.To support this series please donate here. How does a church navigate change, controversy, and continuing revelation while staying true to its foundation? The Articles of Faith lay the groundwork, but the two Official Declarations provide proof of a living church, led by a living prophet. We'll analyze the deep counsel given in these landmark sections. Official Declaration 1: The End of Plural Marriage President Wilford Woodruff faced a devastating dilemma: adhere to the law of plural marriage and lose the temples, ordinances, and leadership to imprisonment, or cease the practice. Honoring Authority: President Woodruff declared his "intention to submit" to the laws of Congress that the Supreme Court had pronounced constitutional. He even went so far as to order the Endowment House "taken down without delay" following one reported (but unproven) case of a marriage performed there. The Critical Question: He was commanded by God to "ask the Latter-day Saints a question" —which was the wisest course: to sacrifice the temples and ordinances, or to cease the practice, "leave the Temples in the hands of the Saints," and let the work for the dead continue. Prophetic Integrity: He declared he would have let all the temples go and gone to prison himself "had not the God of heaven commanded me" to do what he did, and when that command came, "it was all clear to me". This shows a willingness to fully embrace the opposing viewpoint before receiving the final divine guidance. Official Declaration 2: Revelation on the Priesthood Received by President Spencer W. Kimball after "extended meditation and prayer in the sacred rooms of the holy temple" , this declaration fulfilled the promises of earlier prophets. Divine Guidance: The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles "pleaded long and earnestly" and supplicated the Lord for "divine guidance". The Result: God "heard our prayers," and by revelation, confirmed that "the long-promised day has come". This revelation extended the priesthood and temple blessings to "every faithful, worthy man" so he could "enjoy with his loved ones every blessing" that flows therefrom. The Articles of Faith These 13 points, part of the Wentworth Letter, establish our fundamental beliefs: Core Doctrine (A of F 1-4): Belief in the Godhead , accountability for "our own sins, and not for Adam's transgression" , salvation through the Atonement "by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel" , and the first principles of Faith, Repentance, Baptism, and the Gift of the Holy Ghost. A Living Church (A of F 5-9): We believe in priesthood authority , the "same organization that existed in the Primitive Church" , spiritual gifts , and accepting the Bible and the Book of Mormon as the word of God. Most importantly, we believe God "will yet reveal many great and important things". The Path of Discipleship (A of F 10-13): We believe in the literal gathering of Israel , "claim the privilege" of worshiping according to conscience , are subject to the law , and seek after anything "virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy". You read that title right. Are you familiar with the story of James Strang? A blatant con artist who converted to Mormonism shortly before Joseph Smith's assassination who used a forged letter and some "discovered" brass plates to establish himself as Smith's legitimate heir, and then convinced hundreds of followers to move to Beaver Island in Lake Michigan where they crowned him king in 1850 and formed a small army that included pirates? This true story is wonderfully bonkers. Hail Nimrod! Welcome to Church History Matters Come Follow Me Edition where we are systematically diving into every section of the Doctrine and Covenants throughout the year 2025! In this episode Scott and Casey cover Official Declaration 1, while covering the context, content, controversies and consequences of this important history.
Look out! 'Cause this week we're looking at a controversial issue, and perhaps strangely for us, the impetus for this has nothing to do with Mormonism. No, recently a Missouri pastor named Rich Tidwell made waves in Christian circles by claiming that the Bible--yes, even the New Testament--is pro polygamy. And, really putting his matrimony where his mouth is, he has the wives to prove it. So is the Bible as positive about plural marriage as Tidwell claims? And if so, does that mean that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints should reclaim their highly decried practice? Then we'll move on to one of the Bible's most prolific polygamists: Solomon. Or rather, his son Rehoboam. If Solomon was wise (and really... was he?), Rehoboam was rash, impetuous and authoritarian. The apple fell far from Solomon's tiny little tree. But what is this story really about? ---- For early access to an ad-free version of every episode of Data Over Dogma, exclusive content, and the opportunity to support our work, please consider becoming a monthly patron at: https://www.patreon.com/DataOverDogma Follow us on the various social media places: https://www.facebook.com/DataOverDogmaPod https://www.twitter.com/data_over_dogma Have you ordered Dan McClellan's New York Times bestselling book The Bible Says So yet??? The Catechism continues on with other offenses against the dignity of marriage and concludes our look at the sixth commandment. Polygamy, incest, sexual abuse, and free union are reviewed in detail. Fr. Mike highlights that these sins are grave, but God gives hope to all of us experiencing wounds or guilt. We have the opportunity to change in order to live in accordance with the Gospel. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2387-2400. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
