I have this imaginary story of what a composer does all day - and it's based on Mozart and Beethoven biopics and a sort of La Boheme-ish romantic image of starving artists. In this generous interview, Eric Malmquist takes us behind the scenes of a recent commission and offers great tips for anyone wanting to work in our business! Eric Malmquist (b. 1985) writes earnestly heartfelt and engaging music. He draws on a deep love of early music and modern influences to produce works that are focused and emotional. He has been commissioned and performed by the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago, Baroque on Beaver Island, Chicago Composers Orchestra, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, tubist Scott Tegge, historical keyboardist Charles Metz, historical flutist Leighann Daihl Ragusa, Chatter, Constellation Men's Ensemble, the International Chamber Artists, the Newberry Consort and the Wicker Park Choral Singers. Recent performances include City Music with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Accelerando Strings; Open, Clear & Free, a 25-minute men's choir cycle on parks for Constellation Men's Ensemble; A History of Fatherhood in Sante Fe and Albuquerque with Chatter; and a concerto grosso for Baroque on Beaver Island entitled Great Lake Music. His music has been performed across the US and has been featured repeatedly on 98.7WFMT. Recordings of his music are on sale: “Music in Bloom” featuring period instruments, on the disc “New Song” and by pianist Jonathan Hannau. Check out Eric at his website, EricMalmquist.com. Beaver Island is one of the most beautiful places in the US, with fascinating stories to boot. This year, the island is kicking off their inaugural film festival. We sat down with reluctant executive producer (and film festival producer) John Sauve to discuss a few of the films playing at the festival.
For music fans, the legend of the Grande Ballroom looms large. The room played host to important shows by band such as The MC5, The Who, Iggy and the Stooges and BB King. While it's not longer a music venue, the room is an iconic part of the history of Detroit music. We talked with Tony D'Annunzio, director of the documentary, Louder Then Love: The Grande Ballroom Story, which is screening as part of the Beaver Island Film Festival, September 21st, 2024.For more information on the film, check out the movie's website. And for more information about the Beaver Island Film Festival, check out their page on Facebook.

Sometimes the best short films leave you thinking and pondering long after the film is over. Mark Strauss' film The Funeral Photographer does all of that in more. The film is showing as part of the Beaver Island Film Festival, but can also be streamed right now.Your Most Interesting StoryEveryone has at least one fascinating story. We help them tell it. Charles H. Barnard, captain of the American sealing brig Nanina, had only the best of intentions. His aim was to ensure the survival of the people under his care. On June 11, 1813, Barnard and four other volunteers disembarked the anchored Nanina, climbed into a small boat, and sailed about 10 miles from New Island to Beaver Island, both part of the Falkland Islands archipelago in the South Atlantic. Armed with knives, clubs, lances, and guns, and with the assistance of Barnard's trusty dog, Cent, the five men planned to kill birds and hogs and take them back to the Americans and British who remained on the Nanina and were fast running out of fresh provisions. It was a mission of mercy. The hunt went well, and within a few days the boat was filled to the gunwales with the bloody carcasses of slain animals. But when the men sailed back to New Island late on June 14, they were greeted with an alarming sight. The Nanina was gone. Stunned, confused, and angry, the men hauled the boat up onto the beach and, according to Barnard, “awaited the approach of daylight in the most impatient and tormenting anxiety.” Sleeping fitfully in the cold night air, they hoped that in the morning light they would find a letter telling them why the Nanina had left, and when it was coming back.A frantic search at dawn turned up nothing: no note either in a bottle or hung conspicuously from a piece of wood or a boulder. They saw only sand, rocks, scrubby vegetation, and birds in the distance, walking on the beach or flying overhead. The events leading up to this abandonment, and what happened afterward, produce a story with so many unlikely threads, and a cast including such exceptionally colorful characters, that one might think that it sprang from the pen of a fiction writer with an overactive imagination. And yet, the story is true. It is a tale involving a shipwreck, British and Americans meeting under the most stressful circumstances in a time of war, kindness and compassion, drunkenness, the birth of a child, treachery, greed, lying, a hostile takeover, stellar leadership, ingenuity, severe privation, the great value of a good dog, perseverance, endurance, threats, bullying, banishment, a perilous thousand-mile open-ocean journey in a 17.5-foot boat, an improbable rescue mission in a rickety ship, and legal battles over a dubious and disgraceful wartime prize. And it all started with two ships—one American, the other British—sailing to the Falklands from different directions. To explore this story is today's guest, Eric Dolan, author of Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Treachery, and Survival at the Edge of the World.”

Our guest today, Dr. Jeff Powers discusses CBD use in pets. The main areas that CBD has scientifically been shown to be beneficial for is reducing, pain and, increasing movement in dogs with osteoarthritis. Much like in people, CBD has been shown in studies to reduce frequency of seizures in dogs. There's increasing work now in the area of anxiety and the results have been mixed. But what they have found, in a recent study, is as long as you get a significant amount of CBD, into the pet, it can also be beneficial in reducing anxiety as well. And so some vets may be up to speed on where it can be used and when it can be used, and a lot of other ones may not be, or may be fearful to even recommend it because of potential legal implications because it's not a pharmaceutically approved medicine at this point, except for there's one approved. Guest Expert on CBD Jeffrey Powers, DVM, Practice Owner of Beaver Island Hemp Co. Dr. Power is currently the owner of Jordan Valley and Beaver Island Veterinary Clinic https://www.veterinaryclinicsnorth.com/, two offices in Northern Michigan. Dr. Powers was president of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association in 1997 and has served on numerous MVMA and AVMA Committees and Councils. Jeff recently Chaired the AVMA's Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents, and helped form the AVMA's Veterinary Cannabis Working Group. He also serves as a board member of the Veterinary Cannabis Society https://veterinarycannabissociety.org/about-us/committees/, consults for Green Gruff, Inc https://greengruff.com/ and owns Beaver Island Hemp Company (www.beaverislandhemp.com ) where he grows and produces CBD Hemp Products for human and animal use. Dr Powers and his human and animal families live in Northern Michigan. Jeffrey Powers, DVM, Practice Owner Caring for animals has been always been a way of life for Dr. Powers. Ever since he was a child he has always had a deep love for all animals. That is why, it wasn't a surprise when he decided that he wanted to become a veterinarian. Dr. Powers decided to follow in his oldest sister's footsteps who is in the health professions field as well. Dr. Powers graduated from Michigan State University in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science with High Honors, and in 1980 from Michigan State University with a DVM degree with Honors. At the age of 23, he worked under the guidance of Dr. Robert Johnson in Yale, Michigan. He soon established his own practice in 1980, where he would work out of a one room office and would drive the country roads of the thumb of Michigan from farm to farm. Dr. Powers is the founder and owner of Beaver Island Veterinary Services and the owner of Jordan Valley Animal Clinic, providing mixed animal veterinary services to the community of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan and East Jordan Michigan. He is also the founder and former owner of South Sanilac Veterinary Hospital in Peck, Michigan. He continues to care for all animals large or small which explains why his customers often describe him as very caring, sensitive and compassionate in the care of their animals. Welcome back to BM - your favorite podcast! This week we start out with our smoothest intro in a minute and get right into some new drops that Luke has pulled for maximum ridiculousness. Last week, the entire show was on vacation exploring the great state of Michigan (feel the powder). Edward and Katie did a lighthouse tour up the beautiful western coast of the state starting in Grand Haven to Whitehall, Pentwater, Ludington and Manistee and stayed at the Weathervane Inn in Montague. There were cookies and balconies and no underpants and hot tubs. Katie found lots of rocks on the ground (what up magoons) especially in Ludington and ate great food at Mylan's Waterfront Grille in Whitehall. Luke and Jenn took a trip to Beaver Island to visit with some dear friends. The island is 32 mile ferry ride from Charlevoix, MI and takes a bit over two hours. The whole island is made out of dust and there's nothing to do there except get drunk and drive around. It's very beautiful and very quiet and there is great food at the Dalwhinnie Restaurant. Both of these trips are highly recommended by the show! This week, Edward felt the need to get back to our roots and play an old school board game instead of the highly creative bullcrap we've been pumping out as of late. The game is called Zero and it's a reverse version of Family Feud made by a-holes (because Luke didn't win). We learn that we're all pretty stupid at geography and musicals and 1970's TV shows. We also learn about The Beatles, The 10 Commandments, But whatever - it's a fun game! Email the show at bubbmush@gmail.com and follow us on Instagram & TikTok @bubbmush - if you have any friends that like stupid podcasts be sure to tell them you like our show. They might like it too! Thanks viewers :)
This week we are rejoined by the First Billionaire Podcaster Dalton Pruitt to discuss the tumultuous life of James J. Strang. Strang took control of a large faction of Mormons in the wake of the succession crisis caused by the assassination of Joseph Smith and lead a group of intrepid Latter Day Saints to a remote island in Lake Michigan and crowned himself king. He committed acts of piracy , locked horns with President Millard Fillmore, became a well respected state politician and revolutionized women's attire. He was truly a larger than life character and in our examination of his life we discuss many ancillary topics. The rich history of the Wolverine State has a serious dark side. In the Detroit area, the Black Legion outdid the Ku Klux Klan in hate but remained secret until one of its leaders was implicated in a murder. John Harvey Kellogg of Battle Creek was equal parts physician and quack. Then there were the state's two self-proclaimed kings--James Jesse Strang, the leader of a Mormon group on Beaver Island, and Albert Molitor, the reputed illegitimate son of German royalty who established his own kingdom on Presque Isle. With no fudge shops, no old battle forts, no horse-draw carriages, and no souvenir traps, Lake Michigan's Beaver Island is arguably the anti-Mackinac Island. That also makes it a perfectly peaceful summer getaway for those looking to enjoy the state's natural beauty. A team of environment reporters at MLive recently featured Beaver Island as a place to celebrate - not only as a vacation destination, but also as an ecological gem. Of course, Ohio is on the list. Also, Beaver Island once had a KING, and people in Kalamazoo and Battle Creek apparently hate it here.
On this episode of Harrytales, Harry is joining us all the way from Beaver Island, kind of. Over spring break, our family took a short trip to Niagara Falls. Last week, I shared how our adventure on Beaver Island soaked our socks and muddied our shoes. For my youngest in clogs, this meant the mud not only covered her shoes, but her feet and legs as well. After a short car ride, we checked into our hotel with white bedding. My first order of business was to clean up my little one before mud was everywhere. This seemingly simple task revealed how ill-equipped I was to complete my mission.Jesus definitely handled feet washing better than I did! Listen in to hear more about how scrambling in survival mode opened my eyes to a new perspective.P.S. I'm so grateful that I am not responsible for making anyone clean! Over spring break, our family took a short trip to Niagara Falls. On our way there we stopped at Beaver Island.I was intent on taking a hike and found a little path (on my trails app) over to a little island. Sounds fun, right?Except that the storms during the week prior to our trip left the park waterlogged. The field that is probably great for a game of tag on a typical day now looked like a wetland.Still, we ventured on. As we took steps into the mud that threatened to steal the shoes off our feet, the water level rose above the soles of our shoes thus soaking our socks. Wet socks and muddy shoes left me pondering.Listen in to hear more about how God opened my eyes to a new perspective.*The spring break adventure continues next week with the tale of the "Muddy Feet."* Bible verses referred to in this episode:James 1:17Find me on Instagram @HLynnPierce or at hlynnpierce.comSign up for my E-mail list here!
This week on BM, Brutus (Jenn) has gotten a striking, new, shit-kickin' hairdoo. It's the type a hairdoo that makes you wanna fling poop right into your neighbor's yard, over the fence. Next, more poop talk. Perhaps Edward is right about a certain group of 'guys' being poop mongers. Katie tells us what happened because Luke missed out on Saturday night Minecraft because he was driving all over the greater Grand Rapids area because of Jenn's bowling adventure - and missed out on defeating the Ender Dragon. Some friends came to visit from Beaver Island where there isn't Meijer or Internet and the kids go to school with 8 other children and they hate strangers. Luke got a new coffee mug. Edward has been Googling Taylor Swift almost daily and now his social feed is full of TayTay info, photos and videos. He's also trying to get tickets to the T-Swift concert. Katie thinks that Luke & Jenn should serve hors d'oeuvres on the cat's new litterbox enclosure and Edward vows not to eat anything from our house ever again. Boomers don't know what podcasts are. This week's super game isn't a game at all! We're celebrating March - the reading month - on April 17. We all have favorite childhood books and this week we discuss ours. Maybe you have some of the same favorite books as us. Maybe you don't. It doesn't really matter because this is our podcast and we're talking about the ones WE like :) We learn about a disorder that we're not allowed to call what it's always been called because Amelia Bedelia, we learn everything we need to know about everything (ever) from Richard Scarry, we learn how to not be a punk doormat loser from Grover on Sesame Street, Jenn loves weird old-timey sad stuff like Laura Ingalls and Beautiful Joe and other stuff about dead dogs and people. Katie has a VIEWER CHALLENGE: every month she received a non-fiction subscription publication about animals, and none of us can remember exactly what it is. If YOU know, or have any information on the monthly hardcover book with trading card - email the show at bubbmush@gmail.com or hit us up on Instagram @bubbmush - thanks for listening and enjoy!

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/371 Presented By: Togens Fly Shop, Angler's Coffee, FishHound Expeditions, Bearvault Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Kris Bare from AZ Fly Shop takes us into Arizona to discover how he catches massive carp on the fly in the city. Kris breaks down the rod and line setup for carp, the best time to fish them, and the best flies and techniques to increase your catch rate. Carp are normally underrated species but today, Kris tells us why they're actually great for sport fishing. We also find out how they raised around $30,000 for local charities like the Homeless ID Project and what they have going at AZ Fly Shop - the only fly shop in Phoenix. Carp on the Fly Show Notes with Kris Bare 06:00 - AZ Fly Shop has only been open for about a year and a half. He connected with the owner from a Facebook group and Kris was eventually offered to manage the shop. 10:10 - They have grass carp and common carp. Kris mostly fish for common carp. 11:30 - Salt River Project is a power company in Arizona. They use grass carp as pool cleaners for the canals. 14:15 - For rods, Kris uses Scott Sector saltwater style 6 wt. For lines, he uses Scientific Anglers smooth line. 15:30 - There's no standard line for carp fishing but if any company plans on creating one, Kris describes what it should be. "Somewhere between the trout line and infinity line. And it should have a tropical coating or make it as hard of a coating as it can be". 18:30 - Kris gives a shoutout to Derek @lowaterguide who's a great carp guide in Phoenix 19:30 - Common carp usually eat flies that stand straight up like headstand patterns, dragonfly nymphs, or damsel fly nymphs. Grassies usually go for plant-like flies that are more colorful. 21:30 - AZ is the only fly shop in Phoenix 22:30 - For leaders, Kris uses 12 and 14-foot 3X. Umpqua's 8-pound 10-foot is a pretty good leader. 26:25 - SRP owns the grass carp 27:30 - Kris walks about 7 miles every time he's fishing for carp. Carp fishing is moving. The more water you can cover, the more successful you'll be. 28:30 - Carp likes hot weather. The best time to fish them is when it's too hot outside. 34:10 - F&F Chewing Gum worm is great for swinging flies for carp 37:42 - In Phoenix they have: arctic grayling, brookies, browns, rainbows, tigers, apache trout, hellas, and bonneville cutts 43:10 - We had an episode about Beaver Island at WFS 102 49:55 - Kris mentions some other species that he targets like sucker fish, tilapia, tiger sicclid, and catfish 53:55 - The Carpalicious is a good fly. After Joseph Smith died, there were two contenders for the Mormon Throne - Brigham Young and James Strang. Although one group broke off and went to Utah, ultimately becoming the Mormon community known globally today, the other took a different path. And that path was Beaver Island.
First of all, dancer and author Kristi Lynn Davis is a DELIGHT and this book made me so happy. We are silly show people and it makes sense to us to buy groceries at 2am and have prop accident scars that we are proud of. She takes the reader with her from a small dance studio in Michigan to New York then all over the world and back obeying her call to that show biz life. We cram in choreography on an Alaskan cruise ship and are lavished with gifts on tour with the Playboy Girls of Rock and Roll and then follow her running downstairs in heels and a tiny costume to attend another Rockette's birthday party in a Vegas dressing room. ALSO! I have a WHOLE NEW RESPECT for precision dance at that level. WOW! Impressive. My knees are hurting from reading about the number of high-heeled kicks that life requires. We didn't talk about weed very much in this episode mainly because we all know there is no weed in show biz. Hee hee. Cheers to Beaver Island where we get to hang out in the woods and party and never worrying about what 'normal' means.
This week's episode of Harrytales is from the far side of the island - Beaver Island in Michigan, that is. Harry chats through his late summer chaos and fields questions about life on Beaver Island. Kim and Pete have broken up and the Felicity doll has fallen off the shelf. Nothing makes sense but hey, it's late summer. Listenuppe here

Thanks to Jason for subbing in for John Scott last week! Scott talks about his time on Beaver Island including all the beers and dudes. Former host of our show returns to remind us he's always here. Charlie Brown is the existential comic strip we didn't know we needed. Email time means we read your messages while offering our random commentary. Brian wants to know if Mickey Rourke was right about Tom Cruise. Somehow this means Piers Morgan makes an appearance on the show. Has Tom Cruise been the same guy in his movies for 30 years? Is Mickey Rourke the actor's actor for a legitimate reason? The fellas ponder which actors can shed their surface while others never seem to shake the view we have of them. Scott loves Jon Bernthal a bad-ass method actor who isn't a dick on set which reminds Mike for some reason of his time in Baltimore giving Uber rides from The Block. If you live in Maryland, you know what's up. We talk about coded media words that always mean more than they appear to up front. Riots and thugs for example. Mike can't forget some thugs from high school with one in particular invading his living space 20 years ago. All of us are judging people all the time. When it comes to Cruise and Rourke's beef, who gets to judge who is open to interpretation. The brand of crazy that Cruise and Rourke offer are vastly different according to Luke, who would much rather watch Rourke over Cruise any day of the week. Luke also idolizes Brad Pitt's smoking prowess. Danny writes us to find out how and when we get our creative headspace rolling. Luke gets pissed about condiment talk. Just know we love ALL the time and energy you give us and it's absolutely reciprocated. Mr. Pink says hello. He also wants us to remember that we can pray any problems away. Mike reminds us that at this very moment stoned teenagers are driving around in your area. Our friend Ryan Liberty died 19 years ago this week. So we decided to close the show with Million Days by Dag Nasty. If any of this nonsense inspires you for better or for worse, email the show at isitsafepod@gmail.com
John is on the lam at Beaver Island so we recruited long time Hartland pal Jason Welichko to step in for him. Turns out Jason loves Beaver Island just like Scott. Do you remember Grumpy Old Men? Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau movies of the 1990s become the focus for the moment. We're having a heat wave! Are you using somebody else's HBO Max account at that moment? Mike has been exploiting Luke's Netflix for Seinfeld. We owe friend of the show Sean a long segment on his email that we forgot to finish. So we dive into his curiosities about that old news Roe V. Wade and the future motivation of the Republican party now that they have scored some epic wins in the courts. Jason gets honest and admits the thought that Biden might actually follow through on a few things. He admits though, that he wanted anybody but Trump in so he voted for Biden. Paul Ryan used to work out to Rage Against The Machine and we wonder if Bernie Sanders does the same while he stays sharp? The Supreme Court and the punk band MXPX have a commonality in Bremerton. Both have to do with Christianity as well. Wild! Hopefully the right supports the Church of Satan as much as they do Christianity. Maybe Bernie Sanders needs some Vivarin? Or maybe it was the dude with the giant nose from the Afrin commercial? Luke learned from a friend about the bizarre behavior going on in Afghanistan when the women have to wear burkas from head to toe. If you're into sociology you will find it curious. Our next email from Mr. Pink continues into the same serious territory about the exploitation of women and children by famous people. Did you know Pete Townshend was arrested in 2003? Can you still enjoy the music of Michael Jackson knowing what you've heard about him in the past? What about Deshaun Watson and his sexual misconduct? Would you root for him on the field? In the end everything is about money. The answer to all of your questions is money. Finally, Danny calls us squids as he wants to know what grade we give ourselves at the halftime moment of our lives? Great question Danny! We close the show with The Song We Used To Call "Wasting Time" by the Riverboat Gamblers. If any of this nonsense inspires you for better or for worse, email the show at isitsafepod@gmail.com

On this episode of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk about one or the boldest cult leaders to ever live—James Strang. He proclaimed himself the King of Beaver Island in Lake Michigan, and from there, he ran an empire of lumber theft, polygamy, and even piracy across The Great Lakes. He wrote diaries in a made up language (that took a century to decode), forged documents and holy artifacts to help take power within the Mormon Church, and even became a member of the House of Representatives. Oh, and there was that one time he hid his second wife by dressing her as a boy and saying she was his cousin. If you like cults, this one has it all! Scotty and Danny Talk Fly Fishing Tattoos, Beaver Island, Peacock and Smallmouth Bass, and More! Crooked Creek Holler was started in 2014 as a creative outlet for Danny Reed to try his hand at making wildlife-inspired gear for a different type of market. He felt that a lot of people in the outdoor world didn't have a brand that represented them well, leading to their concept of "goods and gear for the modern outdoorsman." As an angler and outdoorsman, every design Danny creates is based on a personal experience. From floating down the river in pursuit of smallmouth, or traveling the world in search of exotic species, Danny is always looking for inspiration in the great outdoors. Danny views Crooked Creek Holler as his opportunity to share his art and the talents of many other artists and friends. He tries to offer fresh ideas and images that break away from standard branding, with a more hand-drawn feel. While on occasion Crooked Creek Holler utilizes digital mediums, they try and retain that unique vibe you only get from “hand-crafting” art. Danny thanks everyone who supports and wears Crooked Creek Holler. He thinks it's been crazy to watch the organic growth over the years into something he could never have imagined. What started as a passion project, is now a fully operational small business and he is looking forward to what the future holds.
