James Jesse Strang presents a parallel prophet's career to that of Joseph Smith. In some ways, a copycat of the Mormon prophet who literally attempted to succeed him despite their having had only a brief relationship, Strang also innovated on Mormon doctrine. Like Smith, he discovered a collection of ancient plates hidden in the earth and established a community of believers on the frontier that he moved to a still better frontier. But his revelations were significantly shorter and less involved than Smith's. If Strang was less successful in matters of the spirit he was better than Smith at politics. Whereas Smith was always an outsider and his presidential run is generally regarded as a kind of self-delusion, Strang actually won political office, serving in Michigan's nascent state legislature. More notoriously, both men preached and wrote against polygamy but ended up practicing and even promoting it and both men were assassinated by their rivals.

Niklas Frank wächst von 1939 bis 1945 im von Deutschland besetzten Polen auf. Sein Vater Hans Frank ist einer der Hauptverantwortlichen für die Verbrechen der Nationalsozialisten im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Wie lebt man im Schatten eines solchen Vaters? Und wie geht man mit familiärer Kriegsschuld um? Eine Kindheit im fremden Polen, aber in Luxus und Pomp, das erlebte Niklas Frank bis zu seinem sechsten Lebensjahr. Dann befreite die Rote Armee Polen von der deutschen Besatzung. Die Nazi-Schergen wurden verhaftet und vor das Internationale Militärtribunal in Nürnberg gestellt. Elf wurden zum Tod durch den Strang verurteilt, unter ihnen Hans Frank, Generalgouverneur von Polen, Hitlers Anwalt in zahlreichen Prozessen und damit politisch verantwortlich für die Deportation und Hinrichtung Hunderttausender Menschen. Mit knapp 50 Jahren beginnt der Autor und Journalist Niklas Frank, sich intensiver mit seinem Vater und dessen Taten auseinanderzusetzen. Obsessiv durchforstet er Akten, Briefe, Fotos und schreibt sich hasserfüllt von der Seele, was er Vater und Mutter nie sagen konnte. Olivia Röllin fragt anlässlich des 80. Nach mehr als 15 Monaten Krieg zwischen Israel und der islamistischen Palästinenserorganisation Hamas soll es eine Feuerpause geben. Damit die Waffen im Gaza-Krieg schweigen, zogen die politischen Gegner Joe Biden und Donald Trump offenbar an einem Strang. Größtmöglicher Druck auf die Kriegsparteien und Drohungen des künftigen US-Präsidenten sind aus Sicht von Michael Kimmage aber keine Blaupause für Verhandlungen zwischen der Ukraine und Russland. Im Interview mit Anna Engelke erklärt der Professor von der Catholic University in Washington DC, warum. Der Historiker geht nicht von einem schnellen Ende des russischen Angriffskrieges in der Ukraine aus. Zumal in den USA derzeit der Nahe Osten im Vordergrund stehe, die Ukraine sei „im Moment kein großes Thema.“ Von den Europäern werde der neue US-Präsident Trump mehr Engagement in der Ukraine fordern, ist Kimmage überzeugt. Der Direktor des Kennan-Instituts erwartet, dass die NATO auch eine zweite Amtszeit Trumps übersteht, „politische Dramen“ aber nicht ausgeschlossen sind. Über eindringliche Warnungen von Noch-Präsident Joe Biden in seiner Abschiedsrede vor einer “Oligarchie” und “Machtmissbrauch” in den USA berichtet Host Kai Küstner. In dieser Rede erwähnte Biden auch das Nahost-Abkommen, die Ukraine allerdings nur sehr kurz. Carsten Schmiester guckt auf die Lage in der Ukraine bzw. auf ukrainische Angriffe auf vor allem russische Infrastruktur. Zum ersten Mal werden sich zwei Städte zweier Länder gemeinsam als eine Kulturhauptstadt präsentieren, und zwar als "grenzenlose". Das italienische Gorizia in der Region Friaul-Julisch Venetien, das vielerorts als Görz bekannt ist, gehörte bis 1918 zu Österreich-Ungarn, wegen der prachtvollen Paläste und Plätze mutet die Stadt nach wie vor österreichisch an. Ganz anders Nova Gorica, sie gilt als die jüngste Stadt Sloweniens. Mit der Grenzziehung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg blieb Gorizia bei Italien, der neue Teil Nova Gorica auf dem damaligen jugoslawischen Gebiet wurde auf dem Reißbrett entworfen. 2004 kam Slowenien zur EU, damit begann die schrittweise Annäherung. Heute wollen sich die Menschen bewusst ihrer gemeinsamen wechselvollen Geschichte stellen und zusammen an einem Strang ziehen. Elisabeth Pongratz aus dem ARD-Studio und Oliver Soos aus dem ARD-Studio Wien haben sich für uns auf den Weg gemacht.

Folge 17: JVA-Sprecher Frank Edelmann führt uns in das eigentlich gesperrte Nürnberger Zellengefängnis. An diesem historischen Ort saßen zur Zeit der Nürnberger Prozesse die Kriegsverbrecher der NS-Zeit. Für viele war es die Endstation vor der Hinrichtung.

Die Hisbollah dominierte die libanesische Politik. Doch der Krieg mit Israel hat die schiitische Miliz geschwächt und grosse Zerstörung nach Libanon gebracht. Wächst aus den Trümmern die Chance für einen politischen Neustart im zerrütteten Mittelmeerstaat? Die Druckwelle der Explosion hat im ganzen Quartier die Fenster zerschlagen, das Nachbarhaus liegt in Trümmern. Schon im Treppenhaus von Ali und Ria Charafeddines Wohnung liegen überall Glassplitter. Die Fenster und Türen sind aus den Fugen gesprungen. Ria Charafeddine steht fassungslos in der Wohnung. «Ich bin so wütend, wir haben nichts getan, wir sind keine Terroristen», sagt die Rentnerin, die gemeinsam mit ihrem Mann und einer Million anderer Libanesinnen und Libanesen vor den israelischen Angriffen geflohen war. Jetzt nach Beginn der Waffenruhe sind beide in ihre Heimatstadt Tyros im Süden Libanons zurückgekehrt und stehen vor einem Scherbenhaufen. Die Hisbollah («Partei Gottes») hatte vom Süden aus ein Jahr lang Israel beschossen, in Solidarität mit der palästinensischen Bevölkerung in Gaza, wie die Hisbollah erklärte. Die Miliz - und Libanon - bezahlten einen enormen Preis: Die israelische Armee tötete die Führungselite der schiitischen Organisation, zerstörte die meisten ihrer Raketenstellungen. Im Süden Libanons wurden dabei ganze Dörfer zu Trümmerlandschaften, die israelische Armee tötete oder verletzte auch tausende Zivilistinnen und Zivilisten. Die von Iran unterstützte Hisbollah ist seither in der Defensive und hat mit dem Sturz des Regimes Assad im benachbarten Syrien auch noch ihren wichtigsten Verbündeten in der Region verloren. Libanon ist Klientelismus und Spannungen zwischen den Volksgruppen gewohnt. Der Wiederaufbau wäre die Chance, den kleinen Mittelmeerstaat neu zu denken. Ria Charafeddine hält sich an dieser Hoffnung fest. Es sollten nun alle an einem Strang ziehen, sagt sie. «Das ist so ein schönes Land und diese Vielfältigkeit, die solltet ihr ausnützen, ihr Libanesen».

Wenn ich endlich den Partner fürs Leben gefunden habe, dann werde ich mich nie wieder einsam fühlen. So stellen sich das manchmal Menschen vor, die Single sind und sich nichts sehnlicher wünschen, als dass da endlich jemand an ihrer Seite sein sollte, mit dem sie ihr Leben teilen können. Und obwohl „nicht alleine sein wollen“ nicht gerade die beste Motivation für eine Beziehung ist, kann ich so eine Vorstellung vollkommen verstehen. Aber das ist eine Fehlannahme, so hart muss ich das sagen. Da draußen gibt es jede Menge Beziehungen und Partnerschaften, in denen Menschen zwar zusammenleben, und sich dennoch einsam und allein fühlen. Sie leben mit Partnern oder Partnerinnen, die emotional nicht verfügbar sind und leiden unter einer unerfüllten Sehnsucht nach Nähe. Das ist eine doppelbödige Angelegenheit. Deshalb ist das Problem der emotionalen Nichtverfügbarkeit oft gar nicht so leicht zu erkennen. Denn von außen betrachtet sieht alles ganz normal aus: gemeinsames Leben, zusammen an einem Strang ziehen, sich gegenseitig unterstützen. Dass es sich dabei so anfühlt, als würden zwei Planeten nebeneinander auf ihren Umlaufbahnen durchs All sausen mit Lichtjahren Abstand zueinander, das wird erst sichtbar, wenn man auf die Gefühlsebene der Beziehung schaut.
