2.  Air Attacks Intensify During Worst Magpie Season, While Snakes, Including a Red-Bellied Black in a Dollhouse, Abound Guest: Jeremy Zakis It is magpie breeding season, described as possibly the worst magpie season in a long time. Male magpies are strategically attacking fast-moving cyclists and joggers, with reports of magpies landing on heads or even stealing a cyclist's earbuds. Meanwhile, the mild winter led to early reptile breeding, resulting in snakes that are more numerous and growing "a lot bigger" due to ample food. Snakes are moving into urban areas, evidenced by a 1.5-meter-long red-bellied black snake found in a child's dollhouse in southern Sydney. Children as young as five are taught safety: if they encounter a venomous snake, they must "stop still" and "act like a statue" to avoid panicking the snake before backing away.

In this episode of the Thinking Talmudist Podcast, Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores Parshas Chukas (Numbers 21:4-9) and Tractate Pesachim 56a, focusing on the episode of the poisonous serpents sent to punish the Jewish people for their complaints against God and Moshe, and the subsequent copper serpent created by Moshe as a divine remedy. He explains that the serpents were a measure-for-measure punishment for Lashon Hara (evil speech) and ingratitude, mirroring the primeval serpent's slander against God, which led to its curse of eating tasteless dust. The copper serpent, when gazed upon with proper intention toward God, healed those bitten, symbolizing a call to look heavenward and reconnect with Hashem. Rabbi Wolbe highlights King Chizkiyahu's destruction of this serpent and concealment of a book of remedies, as approved by the sages, because people began idolizing these objects instead of seeking repentance and divine connection. He connects this to the broader theme of affliction as a divine message for introspection, citing personal experiences like a burn during Passover preparations that prompted self-reflection and miraculous pain relief. I'm excited to have the Angel of Hell's Kitchen, Alli, join me from Philadelphia for this latest episode of the podcast! We get to talk about some wonderful fandoms and her work. We focus primarily on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with what movies Alli started with, and her favorite movies/shows. Hi folks! This past June I drove out to Pemberton, New Jersey to talk with Robert Zappalorti. Bob is the founder and executive director of Herpetological Associates Inc. Now these days there are a lot of people working in what I call contract biology, but Bob Zappalorti was the first environmental consultants working on behalf of herps and other creatures. He founded Herpetological Associates back in 1977 and since then, his company has done a great deal of work in not just conserving herps, but also increasing our understanding of their natural histories, population dynamics, and ecological needs. It was truly an honor and privilege to sit down with Bob and talk about all of this. There were delays getting this episode out, always a bummer, but it does help to sync up a bit with a new book coming out - The Natural History of the Northern Pinesnake, by Joanna Burger, Robert T.
