Send us Fan MailThe animal that causes the most aggressive wildlife incidents in Canada is probably not the one you're picturing. We break down a Frontiers in Conservation Science study that tracks thousands of encounters and lands on a surprising culprit: elk, especially around campgrounds. We talk through why “cute” and “safe” are not the same thing, how seasonality can change animal behavior, and the simple hiking habits that lower the odds of a scary surprise on the trail, whether you're camping, wildlife watching, or walking with your dog. Then we shift into pet science with a study from Anthrozoos on snakes and kids. The key detail is not just what children think, but how fast a parent's real-time comments can shape fear and “othering.” If you've ever wondered how to talk about animals you dislike without passing that fear on, this part will stick with you. Finally, we're joined by Kathy Plobloski, director of Lost Dogs of Wisconsin, for a practical, science-informed guide to finding missing pets. We cover Pet FBI, why centralized lost and found databases matter, why old-school flyers still reunite the most pets, and the concept of survival mode, where even a bonded dog may avoid you. We also dig into shelters, stray hold timelines, and microchip tips that only work if your info stays updated. If you've ever loved an animal, this conversation is worth saving and sharing. What if your purpose isn't waiting somewhere in your future? What if it's been quietly shaping every major decision you've ever made since you were a child? You've been told your purpose is something you'll find. Paul Davis believes that's the biggest lie in personal development. For 43 years, Paul carried a question he never spoke aloud. During that time, he built a successful career, turned struggling businesses around, accumulated the external markers of success, and became the person everyone believed had figured life out. Yet behind every achievement was the same unanswered question he first encountered around the age of ten. In this profound conversation, Dov Baron and Paul Davis explore why so many successful leaders reach the top only to discover the view isn't what they were promised. Together they challenge many of the most popular ideas in personal development, including finding your passion, discovering your "why," and searching for purpose. Instead, they propose something far more confronting: Your life may already be the answer to a question you don't yet know you're asking. Paul shares the deeply personal story behind decades of hidden suicidal ideation, the emotional cost of performing success while hiding his authentic self, and how finally confronting that childhood question transformed not only his life but the way he now helps leaders and organizations. In this episode: Why purpose is discovered by answering a question, not finding a destination. The childhood experiences that silently shape adult leadership. Why high achievement often masks a hidden emotional struggle. The difference between passion, purpose, fulfillment, and quest. How intuition and logic can work together rather than compete. Why so many leaders unknowingly build lives around unresolved childhood questions. Paul's Four Elements of Genius framework and how it helps uncover your authentic path. The one question that may have been directing your life for decades. About Paul Davis Paul Davis is a business growth consultant, executive advisor, author, and founder of Davis Business Consultants in Dublin, Ireland. Drawing on more than four decades of business transformation and personal exploration, Paul developed the Four Elements of Genius framework to help leaders uncover the deeper question shaping their lives, leadership, and purpose. His books include Winning the Snakes and Ladders Game of Life and Genius Unlocked, and his work bridges business strategy, psychology, intuition, and human potential. Ben and Rob fly first class back to 2006 to federally investigate a $33 million B-movie that somehow became one of the most anticipated films of the internet age, before a single trailer even dropped. This episode traces how Snakes on a Plane went from a modest 1992 spec script to a title so absurdly perfect that Samuel L. Jackson signed on for the name alone. We dig into the film's tangled decade-long road to the screen, the fan campaigns and internet memes that forced New Line Cinema to re-re-name the film mid-production, and how a movie built almost entirely on hype became a genuine case study in viral marketing before "going viral" was even a phrase people used.Plot hole's galore, Sam Jackson being Sam Jackson and the best thing to come out of WWII... All truth facts that arre fully, undoubtedly proven.... Probably. Finally, we ask the bigger question: what does it really mean?! And can Rob finally get us cancelled? Ten sitting house democrats and five candidates just signed the “Promise to America” pledge ensuring the public they are not socialists. It has six banal points with no specifics, no plan, and no agenda that might actually help anyone. Of the six, five are limp, empty platitudes. The sixth is a Trojan horse to cut Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. So either these “Democrats” are wholly and secretly aligned with the folks who wrote Project 2025, or they’re stupid. You decide. In this episode, Max rips apart the pledge, puts this so-called movement in historical context, grades the legislators who are signatories to it, and explains why they are so out of step with what their constituents truly desire. We're going back to the very beginning of our journey and revisiting MGS1 with it's Gamecube remake, Twin Snakes. As one would expect, we had a great time overall especially thanks to Ryuhei Kitamura's ridiculous cutscenes. And Speaking of Kitamura, we also watched his 2000 film, Versus which love it or hate it, there's nothing else like it.Episode 87: Notacon
Today's poem is You're Supposed to Enjoy Dying by Colin Pope. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Maggie writes… “There are so many things to fear — spiders, snakes, heights, deep water, the dark. I have a friend who is so fearful of rats, you can't even say the word in her presence. I'd say that most of these fears are rational. Snakes and spiders can bite, and some are venomous. You could drown in deep water or fall from a great height. The one thing that humans seem almost universally afraid of is also the only part of life that is certain: death.” This show is made possible by gifts from listeners. Support The Slowdown today. There are so many new features announced already, from the new Lairs, which are sort of a new version of World Bosses, all the way to a WoW Discord integration, which we're a little skeptical is all that useful. Also not purple is the Midsummer Fire Festival, which has come to WoW until July. There are a ton of orange rewards to collect, including a very hot new mount. There are also new seasons coming soon to Diablos 3 and 4, and for Diablo 4 this includes a collab with Overwatch, bringing some of those hero skins into Sanctuary. This is just making me wonder when we'll get that Raynor skin for Druids. Or do Druids seem more like Tychus? If you have a few minutes, please fill out our survey to tell us what you think about the podcast. In this episode, Dr. Jenkins sits down with legendary herpetologist Romulus Whitaker to explore a life that has been anything but ordinary. Raised in the United States, educated in India, and mentored by famed snake handler Bill Haast, Rom followed his passion for reptiles across continents and cultures before returning to India to help transform wildlife conservation in the country. Over the past five decades, Rom has founded and helped build some of India's most influential conservation organizations, including a snake park, a crocodile conservation center, and a pioneering venom extraction program operated by members of a local Indigenous community. Along the way, he has handled countless snakes and crocodiles, survived remarkable adventures, and played a central role in changing how people view and conserve reptiles. Read Rom's biography, and be sure to check out The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust, The Agumbe Rainforest Research Station, The King Cobra Conservancy, and the Global Snakebite Initiative. Happy Croc Month! Most living crocodilian species look pretty similar overall – that's why there are so many tips for telling alligators from crocodiles – but one group really stands out with their bulging eyes and remarkably slender snouts. This episode, we explore the various features and habits that make gharials unique among crocs, and which have caused no end of confusion for scientists trying to sort out their evolutionary history. And, of course, we'll take a trip into the fossil record to visit some of the most extraordinary long-snouted crocs of the distant past. In the news: hagfish eyes, dinosaur arms, fungal spores, and fishing dinosaurs.
