“But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14 NLT) When I was a kid, I collected snakes. I’m not sure why, but I used to be fascinated by them. I had all kinds. I would read books about snakes. I would go out looking for snakes and bring them home. I was bitten many times. I discovered that you never really know what a snake is thinking. Snakes aren’t expressive creatures; they’re cold-blooded reptiles. Snakes are nothing like dogs. You know where you are with a dog at any given moment. When a dog looks at you with his tongue hanging out and his tail wagging, you know he’s friendly. But if a dog bares his teeth and the hair on his back starts to stand up, then you know he isn’t happy. You always know where you stand with a dog. But you never know with a snake. A snake maintains the same expression all the time. A snake will suddenly bite you, and you won’t even see it coming. In Genesis 3:1, we’re told, “The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made” (NLT). He was shrewd because he didn’t make his intentions obvious. His approach concealed his true purpose. He didn’t show up and say, “Hi, I’m the devil. Maybe you’ve heard of me. I hate God, I hate you, and I want to destroy you. I was wondering if you wanted to hang out. I have some ideas.” The Bible tells us that the devil was a serpent, but it doesn’t say that he slithered. He slithered after he was cursed (see Genesis 3:14). We don’t know what he looked like before the curse, but there seems to be something fascinating, interesting, and appealing about him. Perhaps he was attractive, and that made his temptation attractive. The apostle Paul wrote, “But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14 NLT). What could be less threatening than an angel of light? Pop culture plays into the devil’s hands by depicting him as a red, cloven-footed, pitchfork-wielding monster. If that were the case, he would be an obvious threat. He wouldn’t be able to get close to us because our first instinct would be to run from him. We would have no trouble following James’ instruction, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7 NLT). The devil is able to get close to us because he is shrewd. He can hide his true nature. He can disguise his purposes and strategies. He can convince us to lower our guard and ignore our conscience. In short, he makes himself as irresistible as possible. The devil may be wicked, but he isn’t stupid. He approaches us with a practiced subtlety. To resist him, we must stay close to God and His Word. He is helpless against them. He's a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a former MMA fighter, currently competes in bare-knuckle boxing, and has also been keeping and breeding reptiles for the last 20 to 25 years.Over that time, Adam has worked with a huge variety of reptiles, including a number of different day gecko species, but these days he's probably best known in Canada for his work with garter snakes.We spend a lot of this episode talking about garters, but the conversation goes way beyond one species. We get into how your taste in reptiles changes over time, how your husbandry and techniques evolve as you gain experience, and how the reptile hobby can very quickly become a bit of an addiction.We also talk about how reptile keepers can become completely unreasonable without even realizing it. AUSTRALIA SNAKES.Early Snake Activity Spike Across AustraliaJeremy Zakis reports venomous snakes have emerged a month earlier than expected, with Brisbane becoming a major epicenter. A young boy notably relocated a python off a public path, illustrating increased public comfort with reptile encounters due to extensive school education and media warnings. Snakes often enter homes seeking dry warmth, squeeze through narrow cracks, and nest near soft plush toys. Because brown snakes live in family units within a one-mile radius, nearby family members usually remain close. Queensland's humid weather encourages indoor sightings compared to Sydney. Meanwhile, intense suburban bird dogfights break out between aggressive local cockatoos, magpies, and miner birds. (2)

For about 8 and a half years, our former (and beloved) co-host Dave had been mulling over doing this album. Then one day, out of the blue, he messaged us: I'm coming in I want to talk about One Minute Science by Sunna.In another timeline, we'd have gotten this out of the way a long time ago. Hell, Chris almost suggested it himself. And yet here he was, unprompted, reopening a wound he'd apparently been carrying since he was fourteen.One Minute Science came out in 2000, and on paper it shouldn't have needed anyone's courage. Sunna were a Bristol grunge (?)/electronic rock(?)/industrial metal (?)/nu metal (?) band with a genuinely unlikely pedigree: the album was produced by Neil Davidge, Massive Attack's long-term studio partner, and frontman Jon Harris reputedly played on Mezzanine itself. They signed to Melankolic, the label Massive Attack half-owned, then to Astralwerks in the States, and eventually toured with Smashing Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle and Vast, and picked up Best New Band at the Kerrang Awards in 2001. Lead single Power Struggle found itself on the Hollow Man soundtrack and they even almost had a song from their second album appear on the soundtrack to Spider-Man 2. A fate the film industry's collective good sense narrowly spared everyone. This was, by any measure, a band with momentum.But it didn't pan out. The album stalled at 151 in the UK charts, the press treated it as an inconvenience to be filed under nu metal and dismissed, and Sunna never really recovered - three more records, increasingly hard to find, never on Spotify, cover art that gets worse with each release. One reviewer's verdict at the time, that if Sunna were foreboding and menacing then so were Creed and Bush, turned out to be a pretty efficient way of ending a career.So why the secret almost nine-year fandom? We get into it properly this week, with...mixed results. Dave defends the record as a load-bearing piece of his adolescence, uncompromising and strange even now. Chris tries, valiantly and with increasing desperation, to make a case for the production doing the heavy lifting. And Mark - hearing it stone cold for the first time in his life - declares it not just bad but the worst thing he's heard on this podcast in very nearly nine years of doing it. Grim.Nobody comes out of this one agreeing with anybody else. Which is exactly how this podcast used to be, back in the days of yore. Everyone's got a record like this. Why "just cut them off" is the wrong first moveHere's the contrarian part, and it's the part most people skip. Every piece of advice online tells you the same thing: identify the toxic person, go no-contact, block, delete, done. And sometimes distance is exactly right. But cutting someone off doesn't answer the harder question, the one underneath the wound: Who told you that you had to keep the snake fed? If you keep ending up with the same viper in a different body: new job, same manipulator; new relationship, same betrayal; the problem isn't your bad luck. It's a belief you've been carrying that says your worth is measured by how much you'll tolerate. You call it being loyal. You call it being the bigger person. You call it keeping the peace. But high-functioning codependency wears respectable clothes, and it will keep you seated at the table of someone who's already decided you're the meal. You can remove every snake in your yard. If you never ask why the door keeps getting left open, another one is already on the way. How to spot a snake before it strikesDiscernment isn't paranoia. It's paying attention to patterns instead of performances. In the episode, Jahmaal walks through the tells: They're fluent in your weaknesses and forgetful of your worth. Make a planWisdom without a plan is just a nice feeling that fades by Monday. Decide (before the next encounter) what you will and won't allow. What the boundary is. What you'll say. What access gets revoked, what stays, and what the consequence is when it's crossed. A boundary you haven't rehearsed is a boundary you'll abandon under pressure. Put it in writing. Say it out loud. Build the fence before you need it. Take inventory. Take ownership. Make a plan. That's how you stop being surprised, and start being sovereign over your own peace. A healthy person, corrected, adjusts. Take inventory of the fruit over time, not a single bad day. What if setting a boundary costs me the job or the relationship? Then it was already costing you more than you realized (just quietly). Tom Whitehouse, a wildlife conservationist, has spent more than 20 years working with dangerous reptiles, mammals and birds in the zoo and wildlife industry. Today he runs Coastal Wildlife Management.  In a single day he might relocate a red bellied black snake out of a family's laundry, carve a habitat hollow into a living tree, and manage feral cats through a thermal scope at two in the morning.  We explore the impact feral cats, foxes, pigs, deer and wild dogs have on Australian wildlife, agriculture and the environment, and how thermal imaging, night vision and trapping help conservationists track and manage them.
