If you'll recall in our recent studies of Acts on Sound Doctrine, we read about the Apostle Paul's shipwreck off the coast of Malta. We saw that, despite the challenges, Paul didn't let his circumstances derail him from his true focus - sharing the love of Christ! And what great encouragement that is to us to take advantage of the opportunities we have even today. To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/621/29
I'm excited to have the Angel of Hell's Kitchen, Alli, join me from Philadelphia for this latest episode of the podcast! We get to talk about some wonderful fandoms and her work. Alli and I kick things off by talking about The Hunger Games franchise. We cover both the movies and books (including Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and The Sunrise on the Reaping). Alli discusses some of the differences between them, and why she loves and revists the series often. We talk about favorite characters, favorite movies, and more. We also explore the idea of potential future books (and movies) and which characters we'd love to see featured. From there, we go to Westeros to talk about Game of Thrones. Alli talks about how she first got into the HBO series, and what kept her coming back for more. We talk about her favorite house and characters, her thoughts on the series, and what she'd love to see if there were even more spinoff's. Then we get to Marvel. We focus primarily on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with what movies Alli started with, and her favorite movies/shows. We talk about favorite characters, thoughts on the upcoming movies (especially the future X-Men movie), as well as characters not yet in the MCU - Psylocke, and Silk. We briefly discuss some of the comics those characters appear in. Lastly, we wrap up with a conversation about Cosplay. Alli talks about how she first got into Cosplay, as well as how she chooses which characters to cosplay. We talk about some of the ideas she has for photoshoots, and what she'd love to do in the future with cosplay. You can find Alli at: https://www.instagram.com/angel_ofhellskitchen/ https://www.tiktok.com/@angel_ofhellskitchen

Hi folks! This past June I drove out to Pemberton, New Jersey to talk with Robert Zappalorti. Bob is the founder and executive director of Herpetological Associates Inc. Now these days there are a lot of people working in what I call contract biology, but Bob Zappalorti was the first environmental consultants working on behalf of herps and other creatures. He founded Herpetological Associates back in 1977 and since then, his company has done a great deal of work in not just conserving herps, but also increasing our understanding of their natural histories, population dynamics, and ecological needs. It was truly an honor and privilege to sit down with Bob and talk about all of this. There were delays getting this episode out, always a bummer, but it does help to sync up a bit with a new book coming out - The Natural History of the Northern Pinesnake, by Joanna Burger, Robert T. Zappalorti, and Michael Gochfield. Now available from Eco Universe Books. I'm looking forward to getting a copy! Thanks again Bob! Great to talk with you and I hope our paths cross again soon. POD BLOG! You can find the first of my supplemental blog posts that support podcast episodes at Notes From The Field. Let me know your thoughts! MERCH!!! Are you afraid of reptiles? Horror movies suggest that you just might be. There is an abundance of movies with reptile and amphibian horror themes. Snakes? Lots of you. Betting odds would suggest that you either fear spiders or snakes, or both. Alligators and crocodiles? Probably not something that applies, unless you live in Florida or Egypt. But, how about frogs? Or turtles? If you are, then this episode is made for you.

Numbers 21:4-9 - From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
In this episode, Neil explores the ups and downs of the hosting journey through the metaphor of snakes and ladders. Drawing from his ten years of experience, Neil shares valuable insights on how to navigate the challenges of hosting, emphasising that setbacks are a natural part of growth. He introduces five practical strategies to help listeners deal with negative thoughts and transform them into opportunities for progress. KEY TAKEAWAYS Embrace the Snakes and Ladders Metaphor: Hosting is akin to the game of snakes and ladders, where progress is not linear. Expect both highs (ladders) and lows (snakes) as part of the journey, and recognise that setbacks are opportunities for growth. Acknowledge negative thoughts and label them (e.g., Prejudice Snake, Security Snake) to better recognise and address them. This helps in understanding that these thoughts are often rooted in old patterns and do not reflect reality. Use negative experiences as triggers to remind yourself of past successes. Keeping a journal of positive reviews or heartfelt notes from guests can serve as a motivational tool during challenging times. Actively decide how to respond to difficult situations. By setting a mini intention, such as choosing to find humour in a frustrating moment, you can shift your perspective and reduce stress. BEST MOMENTS "Hosting, like with any other business endeavour, is like playing a game of snakes and ladders." "Falling down the snake isn't failure; it's just part of the game of hosting." "Every climb and every fall is part of the journey, which is exactly the same experience when hosting." "When a snake raises its head to try to pull us down, we can choose to reflect on why we feel that way." "The snakes come with a journey. And rather than letting them defeat us, the trick is to recognise them for what they are." Carrie Fisher once dropped acid in the desert with Paul Simon. She did ayahuasca in the Amazon jungle, where she was attacked by a giant snake that may or may not have been real. She did so much cocaine that legendary partyman John Belushi told her to ease up. Her mood swings were such a dramatic part of her personality that she gave them their own names. And her personality was so galvanizing that it became an avatar for real-life resistance fighters. What's deadlier: a puffer fish or a great white shark? A tiger or a lion? A beautiful flower or a venomous snake? In this episode, we sit down with PhD entomologist and author Eleanor Spicer Rice to explore the shocking, fascinating, and sometimes gross world of her hit The Deadliest book series. Prepare to have your assumptions challenged as we uncover which creatures are nature's most lethal competitors - and why the winners might not be what you expect. This interview is a must-watch for curious kids, parents, and anyone fascinated by the natural world. Dr. Eleanor Spicer Rice, an expert in entomology for kids, reveals the incredible science behind her unique children's science books, which are formatted like a thrilling game show where animals compete for the title of "deadliest." We dive deep into the criteria she uses to crown a winner (it's all about the numbers!) and discuss some of the most surprising contenders from her books on snakes, flowers, big cats, and the upcoming sea creatures edition. Dr. Rice shares why the deadliest flower kills 8 million people a year and why the deadliest sea creature isn't a shark, but a delicacy people eat on purposeBeyond The Deadliest book series, the Eleanor Spicer Rice author discussion covers her journey from studying ants and bees to writing for children. She shares mind-blowing facts, like that the average American eats four pounds of insects a year and that clean houses can contain 100 different species of bugs. We also explore her other work, the Your Hidden Life series, which investigates mind-controlling microbes that can influence your mood and the secret ways your pets interact with the world - like how dogs align with the Earth's magnetic field when they go to the bathroom. Throughout the conversation, Dr. Rice's passion for turning fear into fascination shines, encouraging a sense of wonder about the often-misunderstood creatures living all around us.LEARN MORE FROM OUR GUEST / EPISODE RESOURCES:Explore The Deadliest book series (Spiders, Snakes, Big Cats, Flowers, and more)Discover the Your Hidden Life series

Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you! We're talking animals this month, and we start in style by bringing in Edwin Crozier and Andrew Roberts of the Text Talk podcast to discuss everyone's favorite reptile. We start where you would expect — the garden of Eden. But when I suggested Eve fell victim to a relatively obvious ploy, my guests didn't necessarily agree. And the conversation went in all kinds of interesting directions from there. See what you think. After a week of betrayal, high drama and emotion, Norwich City delivered a clear message at Ewood Park – 'United We Stand'. Josh Sargent's heroics and Vladan Kovacevic's brilliance ensured the Canaries left Lancashire with three precious points in their pocket to help lift a fanbase left reeling by Marcelino Nunez's shock cross-border transfer. Send us a textWood Fired Herping is back. In this relaunch episode, host Zeev explores what herping means today; from snakes and field ethics to food, conservation, and the culture that ties it all together. Whether you're into reptiles, amphibians, road cruising, or just love stories from the field, this is where science, storytelling, and community intersect. But this isn't just a checklist of topics, it's a fire.A second fire sparked from ashes you thought were cold. A fire that lives in desert nights where headlights carve the dark, in monsoon storms that break the heat, in the smell of smoke and steaks after a slow night. It lives in the laughter, the mistakes, the patience of waiting for the snake that may never come. This episode is about what Wood Fired Herping stands for now:a space where food, field stories, and conservation aren't separate threads but the same woven fabric; a space where humor can sit next to truth, and ethics emerge from the choices we make in the dirt, not from rules handed down.If you've been here since the beginning, welcome back.If you're pulling up a chair for the first time, welcome to the fire.Follow & connect: @woodfiredherping on Instagram, @z_e_herping for photography, join the Wood Fired Herping Podcast group on Facebook, or visit www.woodfiredherping.com Share the show, leave a review, and keep the fire burning.

Snakes, Snakes Everywhere - But They Don't Have to Bite You Ever feel betrayed or hurt by someone close to you? In this episode, we explore how to stop chasing the "why" and start chasing your own healing. We've all been bitten emotionally before. But while our first instinct is to chase down the snake and demand an explanation, the truth is, closure comes from within. As the monk said, "Imagine being bitten by a snake and rather than go to the hospital, you chase the snake to find out why it bit you." Don't chase the snake - chase your own healing. [1:23] The human ego hates injustice, but you can't demand peace from chaos.[3:45] Surround yourself with people who lift you up, not bring you down. [5:10] Sometimes closure is a decision, not a conversation. [7:30] The jungle will reveal who you are - don't let your wounds become your identity.[9:15] You can't chase healing and vengeance at the same time. Key Takeaways:- Stop chasing the "why" and start chasing your own healing. - Closure comes from within, not from others.- Don't let your wounds become your identity - reclaim your self-worth. If this episode resonated with you, share it with a friend who needs to stop chasing their snake. And keep building yourself up - you've got this! In this Prof Responds episode on Slytherin House, Professor Wamble takes on the accusations that he went too easy on the snakes. Drawing on listener comments, he dives deep into the complicated ways ambition, loyalty, and reputation shape our understanding of Slytherins. From reframing ambition as neutral rather than evil, to recognizing the pack-like protectiveness that makes Slytherins more Hufflepuff-adjacent than we admit, to wrestling with the Malfoys' murky line between altruism and self-interest, this episode pulls no punches. Along the way, we question whether it's the individuals or the corrupt systems they move through that make ambition look ruthless, and whether Hogwarts' own biases (and Harry's perspective) stack the deck against Slytherins from the start. Ultimately, Slytherin House may be written as the villains of the story, but Prof argues that they're not the only ones upholding supremacy—and our refusal to extend them nuance says as much about us as it does about them.

The Holy Post crew is suspicious of a new study that finds MAGA supporters score higher in authoritarianism, social dominance, and malevolent personality traits, while liberals score higher in compassion and empathy. Church planter, Brad Edwards, says many of us hold beliefs, language, and values that sabotage our ability to benefit from participation in a church. He talks to Kaitlyn about his new book, “The Reason for Church,” and why our anti-institutional instincts are self-defeating. Also this week, the Secretary of Defense reposted comments from his pastor that women shouldn't be allowed to vote. The Catholic Church says ICE detainees are being denied their religious rights. Preview season rolls on as we dive into the SEC, figure out the contenders and pretenders, making some irresponsible predictions, and chew on the conference's biggest storylines going into the 2025 college football season. In this SEC preview episode, we discuss the impact Arch Manning could have on the Texas Longhorns, provided the offensive line can get sorted in time. Plus, a conversation around whether this year's Alabama squad will feel more "DeBoerian" than in 2024, and how Georgia stacks up with Gunner Stockton at the helm. We also debate the meaty middle of the conference and wonder if Brian Kelly can turn talent into big wins, if Mike Elko can bully the conference with his rushing attack, if DJ Lagway can handle a murderer's row of a schedule, and if Missouri is the ultimate wildcard. And of course, a conversation about a new-look Ole Miss, the fearsome trio of LaNorris Sellers, Dylan Stewart and Nyck Harbor at South Carolina, Oklahoma's new quarterback / coordinator tandem, Tennessee's transfer trade, Auburn's portal fever, and much more. And finally, we take the temperature of Arkansas, Vandy, Kentucky and Mississippi State. Consider this your starter pack for the 2025 SEC football season.
