The AK in Tyler AK stands for Alaska, originally out of anchorage the warm hearts and minds of the valley have kept the original rock and blues musician grounded neatly in the south. Tyler had plenty to talk about his journey from the far north all the way to the valley including his time playing in Seattle, his favorites spots to gig down south, names for his many guitars and some ways to cook Alaska's favorite fish Halibut. Last year we had the good fortune of interviewing a passel of local jazz legends about their jazz-funk project titled Groove Yard. Chip Gulbro, Keith Taylor, Chris Ferguson and Bryan Williams all make up the masterful squad that brought four live tracks to Spice Rack Studios. At the Bell Tavern on the evening of August 7th 1820 Reuben Turner and Thomas Logwood were drinking heavily. A horseback battle later that evening ends with one man mortally wounded and another barricading himself in the courthouse, but don't worry EVERYONE get's to wave a knife. The story became one of the first big news stories of the day with a special running in the Alabama Republican Newspaper focusing only on this case. We also get a peak into Tennessee Valley resident's menu of the time which consisted of a pile of bacon, salted pork and you can polish that off with whiskey soaked bread and a tall glass of milk.

October is domestic violence awareness month and this episode of Red Magic Imports features music from 3 bands participating in a fundraiser on Oct 25th at Shagnasty's for Crisis Services of North Alabama which helps victims by providing shelter and legal aid. We hear music from The Dirty Scavengers, Brewster and Bone Zone as well as an original spoken word poetry from Salina on her personal experience with domestic Violence.
Dan Bullard of Spice Radio sat down with Charles "Toot" Snoddy to discuss his 50 year plus career in music and to get his take on acoustics. Toot takes us through building his first console from scratch to the cheapest and easiest ways to build bass traps and treat rooms acoustically. Sound Science is a new mini-series distributed by Spice Radio where we interview veterans, visionaries and professionals about the science and functionality of sound design.
We sat down with Hunter Copeland's Band after an amazing live set in Spice Rack Studios. Our interview took place right before their big CD release party and Straight to Ale. With a great history of singing original music in Huntsville Alabama it's a surprise we haven't had Hew on the program before. James G. Birney is one of the few self-professed abolitionists from the Deep South and specifically Alabama. His life and work provides an insight into the evolving American attitudes towards slavery and its moral failings from the 1790’s to his death immediately prior to the Civil War. Birney was a deeply imperfect man and his path from slaveholder to first Presidential candidate for the anti-slavery Liberty Party traces a strange path across American politics in the Antebellum.

If Walter Cagle were alive today he might have had something to say about this week's "Snowpocalypse". The headline "500 Pound Weather Prophet of Boaz Dies" was the first clue that pulled John into the fascinating story of Walter Cagle. After suffering a mysterious illness that left him in a temporary coma Walter began observing local wildlife and predicting the weather, priceless information for farmers of the Tennessee Valley. Walter's fame grew readily with the help of newspaper stories. He eventually shared front page with the Spanish Civil War and the succession crisis of the English Empire. On August 13th, 1828 11 enslaved people sued two white men for their freedom in the court of Huntsville Alabama. This was one of only two court cases John O'Brien has ever found that included enslaved people as litigants and not as property. Today's case covered a vast expanse of 1800's civil rights including a women's right to property and "Manumission" -where a slave owner willingly frees their slaves usually upon their death. By All Means performed a rare feat for us at the Spice Rack stripping down their big arena sound to a powerful acoustic performance. Hearing these guys in a different light than their normal electric stage show was one of our most interesting recordings of the year! By All Means did not disappoint on the interview front either we covered eating at "Golden Coral" seafood restaurant and Justhrine's simultaneous trucking and vocal writing system.
