Myles Dungan's family was involved in four violent deaths between 1915 and 1922. Jack Clinton, an immigrant small farmer from County Meath, was murdered in the remote and lawless Arizona territory by a powerful rancher's hired assassin; three more died in Ireland, and each death is compellingly reconstructed in this extraordinary book. Mark Clinton was murdered by a group of agrarian ‘bandits' who resented his family's possession of some disputed acres; his killer was tried and executed by the dead man's relatives and comrades in the Meath IRA. A mentally challenged youth was shot as an informer by another relative of Dungan's, and buried in secrecy and silence.Myles Dungan's book, focused on one family, offers an original perspective on this still controversial period: a prism through which the moral and personal costs of violence, and the elemental conflict over land, come alive.Myles Dungan is an Irish broadcaster and author. He has presented many arts programmes on RTÉ Radio, and has also been a sports broadcaster on RTÉ Television. Since October 2010 he has been the presenter of “The History Show” on RTÉ Radio One.Catriona Crowe is one of Ireland's leading historians and commentators. She was elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 2012.The Dublin Festival of History is brought to you by Dublin City Council, and organised by Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with Dublin City Council Culture Company. The Rise and Fall of Carrickmines Castle

When creating episodes I normally try to tell wider events in Irish history by focusing on the lives of an individual person. This podcast takes a different approach. I interview Dr Mark Clinton about the history of one specific place - Carrickmines Castle. Mark lead the excavations that unearthed the ruins of the castle destroyed in the 17th century.By focusing on this castle we were able to have a wide ranging conversation that covers centuries of history. We began with the Norman Invasion, made our way through the origins of sectarian tensions in Ireland before looking at a brutal siege and massacre during the 1640s. Then we finally finished by looking at the destruction of archaeological sites in Ireland in the 21st Century. You can get Mark's book Carrickmines Castle - Rise and Fall in all good bookshops. This is the final episode for 2019. Thanks for tuning in throughout the year - it means alot to me. I hope you and yours have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.Fin  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

My guest on Episode 31 of Annie Talks is Mark Clinton - Public Address Announcer. I met Mark in 2009 where he was the Public Address announcer at El Dorado High School and had been the school's announcer for decades. Mark has been announcing for 27 years now. Today he is one of the PA announcers for the High A Minor League Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, a farm team for the Los Angeles Dodgers Organization. Mark, who played baseball at El Dorado High School, tells the story of how an injury led to the start of his career as an announcer. His love of the game led to his gig as the resident PA announcer, thus opening up the doors to many other opportunities. He's had the joy and pleasure of working with 4 different High Schools, (El Dorado, Orange Lutheran, Canyon & Murrieta Mesa), 3 different Colleges, (Fullerton, Santa Ana && UC Riverside), the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)- Collegiate summer team, and 3 Minor League teams (Quakes, Storm & 66ers). He has a simple approach to his craft: RESPECT EVERYONE. It's very evident that Mark truly enjoys what he does, and and it definitely shows. Here now is my conversation with Mark Clinton.
