Tom Calhoun was born in Belleville and attended public schools there graduating from Belleville West high school in 1968. As a youth, he enjoyed sports…particularly baseball and was named a Khoury League all-star shortstop in 1959. The All-Star game was played at Busch Stadium One where in his lone at bat he managed what his dad called a “loud foul ball”. That, to this day, is his greatest accomplishment as an athlete. Tom's career behind the microphone started after being part of a high-school “Youth Sunday” sermon at church, when a little old lady told him…”Young man, you have a fine speaking voice. You should think about going into radio.” That planted the seed. Tom's boyhood hero was Stan Musial. And when he heard Jack Buck say on a Cardinals' broadcast that calling a game on the radio was the “best job in the world”, he found another hero in Buck, and decided to pursue sports broadcasting as a career. His education took him to SIU-Edwardsville where he received a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communication which included an internship at KMOX and a chance to meet and work alongside Mr. Buck. His professional career started at WIBV radio in Belleville in 1973. There he hosted programs and did play-by-play on high school and college sports. In the 80's, opportunity took him to several St. Louis stations including KXOK where broadcasting colleagues Ron Jacober and Dan Kelly encouraged him to pursue an opening for the Public Address announcer with the St. Louis Blues. Then Blues executive Susie Mathieu hired Tom and game one with the Blues came on January 4th, 1987. As of today, (February 10th 2020) Tom has been at the microphone for every Blues game since…a total of 1511 games. He has been at the microphone for two NHL All-Star games; the one just concluded, and the one held at the Arena in 1988. Tom also worked the Alumni Classic and Winter Classic held at Busch Stadium in 2017. Of course, the 2019 Stanley Cup is a major highlight. Tom was part of the post-parade Cup celebration under the Gateway Arch where he was able to hoist the Stanley Cup overhead in front of nearly a half-million Blues fans. And yes, Tom does have a championship ring, thanks to the generosity of Chairman Tom Stillman, CEO Chris Zimmerman and the Blues ownership group. In the summer months, Tom handles the baseball PA duties for the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League. He has been a part of Grizzlies games since 2003 when the team won its first league championship. Tom would like to thank owner Rich Sauget and GM Steve Gomric for their continued support. Tom continued to work in radio as a news announcer, sports announcer and host of general interest programming at KMOX and KTRS through the 90's and into the early part of the 21st Century. Tom, is now the podcast host of the St. Louis Blues Hockey Legends Podcast show available on all platforms. #tomcalhoun #stlouisblues #publicaddressannouncer #chrispomay #livewithcdp #barrycullenchevrolet #wellingtonbrewery https://beacons.ai/chrisdpomay / @chrispomaylivewithcdpsport5517 https://www.wellingtonbrewery.ca/ https://www.barrycullen.com/ https://www.cameo.com/chrispomay Want to create live streams like this? In addition to his presentations at his public event, he presents extended versions of these synopses to leadership teams and groups within companies and organizations, in multiple arenas, including leadership teams in city governments. And for 20+ years, Randy has presented books on issues of social justice at the Urban Engagement Book Club, based in Dallas. Randy graduated from Abilene Christian University, where he lettered four years in Tennis; and then earned a Masters Degree from Pepperdine University, and completed classwork for a PhD from the University of Southern California, in Rhetoric and Public Address. (Yes, he is in the ranks of the infamous ABDs – all but dissertation). The best way to grasp the complexity of issues is to read the best books by substantive authors on the subject. I have presented synopses son books by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors and renowned journalists, giving me a breadth of understanding regarding the issues of poverty, homelessness, and issues of racial justice. There are two types of announcers at major televised swim meets like NCAA Championships and US Olympic Trials: the big-time network pros in the nice upstairs booth who sit before the cameras with their play-by-play and color commentary, whose words get no immediate feedback or reaction, and then there are the solo announcers, usually on-deck with all of the attending media reps, communicating directly via the PA system with the seats in the stands, the ones whose job it is to provide more than names and numbers to the spectators on-site. Kevin Cargill is a former HS and college swimmer who has been mentioned as a possible successor to the big shoes and stellar heights reached by the late Sam Kendricks, "America's Swim Meet Announcer". A statement has been released by ex-U.S. President Donald Trump concerning the unfortunate demise of three Army personnel in Jordan as a result of a drone strike earlier in the week. This public address came as news broke that current President Joe Biden had not reached out to the affected families of the servicemen. 'A tragedy has befallen our nation with the drone strike on our military base in Jordan, taking the lives of three brave American servicemen and inflicting injuries on many more,' Trump shared on Truth Social. His heartfelt sympathy went out to the loved ones of these fallen heroes. 'Americans across our great nation must unite in prayer and support for the servicemembers we unjustly lost and those wounded in this devastating incident,' the former President urged. Trump didn't fail to express his discontent about Biden's global and regional diplomatic strategies and policies, especially regarding areas like the Middle East which continue to remain sources of global tension. He underlined, 'This boldness in striking at the heart of America is yet another disastrous repercussion of Joe Biden's policy of submission and weakness.' Trump paralleled the current administration's approach to Iran, with what was in place during his tenure as president.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

State censorship and cancel culture, trigger warnings and safe spaces, pseudoscience, First Amendment hardball, as well as orthodoxy and groupthink: universities remain a site for important battles in the culture wars. What is the larger meaning of these debates? Are American universities at risk of conceding to mobs and cuddled “snowflake” students and sacrifice the hallowed values of free speech and academic inquiry? Bradford Vivian examines the heated debates over campus misinformation as a language unto itself that confirms existing notions and often provides simple explanations for complex shared problems. In his book, Campus Misinformation: The Real Threat to Free Speech in American Higher Education (Oxford UP), he shows how the free speech crisis on US college campuses has been manufactured through misinformation, distortion, and political ideology, and how campus misinformation is a threat not only to academic freedom but also to civil liberties in US society writ large. In our conversation, Bradford explained how campus speech crises are used – and also how faculty, administrators, students and others can recognize recurring patterns and properly respond, for example to distinguish between abuses of scientific evidence and sound scientific claims in public argument. Bradford Vivian is a professor in the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. His research and teaching focuses on theories of rhetoric (or the art of persuasion) and public controversies over memory, history, speech and other issues. Among his books are Commonplace Witnessing: Rhetorical Invention, Historical Remembrance, and Public Culture (Oxford University Press), Public Forgetting: The Rhetoric and Politics of Beginning Again (Penn State Press) and Being Made Strange: Rhetoric beyond Representation (SUNY Press). He is also co-editor, with Anne Teresa Demo, of Rhetoric, Remembrance, and Visual Form: Sighting Memory (Routledge). He has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipend and, from the National Communication Association, the James A. Winans-Herbert A. Wichelns Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address, the Critical/Cultural Studies Division Book of the Year Award, and the Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award. Jake and Phil answer questions from our listeners.
If we listen to the politicians and pundits, college campuses have become fiercely ideological spaces where students unthinkingly endorse a liberal orthodoxy and forcibly silence anyone who dares to disagree. These commentators lament the demise of free speech and academic freedom. But what is really happening on college campuses? Campus Misinformation: The Real Threat to Free Speech in American Higher Education (Oxford UP, 2022) shows how misinformation about colleges and universities has proliferated in recent years, with potentially dangerous results. Popular but highly misleading claims about a so-called free speech crisis and a lack of intellectual diversity on college campuses emerged in the mid-2010s and continue to shape public discourse about higher education across party lines. Such disingenuous claims impede constructive deliberation about higher learning while normalizing suspect ideas about First Amendment freedoms and democratic participation. Taking a non-partisan approach, Bradford Vivian argues that reporting on campus culture has grossly exaggerated the importance and representativeness of a small number of isolated events; misleadingly advocated for an artificial parity between liberals and conservatives as true viewpoint diversity; mischaracterized the use of trigger warnings and safe spaces; and purposefully confused critique and protest with censorship and "cancel culture." Organizations and think tanks generate pseudoscientific data to support this discourse, then advocate for free speech in highly specific ways that actually limit speech in general. In the name of free speech and viewpoint diversity, we now see restrictions on the right to protest and laws banning certain books, theories, and subjects from schools. By deconstructing the political and rhetorical development of the free speech crisis, Vivian not only provides a powerful corrective to contemporary views of higher education, but provides a blueprint for readers to identify and challenge misleading language--and to understand the true threats to our freedoms. Bradford Vivian is Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences and past Director of the Center for Democratic Deliberation at Penn State University. His previous books include Commonplace Witnessing: Rhetorical Invention, Historical Remembrance, and Public Culture (OUP 2017) and Public Forgetting: The Rhetoric and Politics of Beginning Again (2010), which received the Winans-Wichelns Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Rhetoric and Public Address awarded by the National Communication Association. On today's edition of the Locked On FLORIDA Panthers Podcast, Armando Velez(@Mandoman12) brings back Public Address Announcer Andrew Imber(@Imbervoice) to discuss the balance of becoming a multi sport announcer. Some days, it requires doing multiple sporting events in one day, Andrew gives a perspective on how he's been able to balance all those gigs. One thing that is important to Andrew is fitness, and also discusses a bit of fitting that in along with how he's developed into a personal trainer. Then the guys get into some hockey talk, where we discuss where Andrew Imber was on the night of the Matthew Tkachuk trade. There's one preseason game under the Panthers belt, and with Andrew back behind the mic at FLA Live Arena, Armando asks him what would be his goal song with the Panthers going down the "individual song" approach this season.Twitter: @LO_FLAPanthersEmail: lockedonflapanthers@gmail.comSubscribe to Locked On Panthers for FREE on your favorite podcast platform!Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-panthers-daily-podcast-on-the-florida-panthers/id469193661Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/509xdSHc2QuXXAE4CQVQp4?si=VPbooMFYTdqKF4HbW8SV3A&nd=1Google: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9wYW50aGVycGFya3dheXJhZGlvLmJsb2dzcG90LmNvbS9mZWVkcy9wb3N0cy9kZWZhdWx0?sa=X&ved=0CBQQ27cFahcKEwiItMCm9MHvAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAQAudacy: https://www.audacy.com/podcast/locked-on-panthers-daily-podcast-on-the-florida-panthers-19287YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHsUfqcK1qfjlqhamXbta_QSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar.
