https://teachhoops.com/ Back when my coaching whistle was brand new, the high school game was its own universe. It was about school pride, community rivalries, and the dream of maybe, just maybe, getting a college scholarship. The pro game was a distant galaxy—something you watched on TV, a place where giants roamed. The connection between the two was a one-way street; a kid played for his high school, went to college for four years to get tougher and smarter, and then, only if he was one of the truly blessed, got a shot at the pros. The game we taught was more structured, more focused on traditional positions. You had your back-to-the-basket center, your pure point guard, and a clear pecking order. The goal was to build a great team to win a state title, not necessarily to build a future pro's individual brand. Now, that universe has collapsed. The pro game isn't a distant star anymore; it's the sun that the entire high school solar system revolves around. The funnel from the top has inverted. NBA strategy dictates everything. Every tall kid who can walk and chew gum is working on his corner three because of the analytics-driven pro game. The "positionless basketball" you see in the league has erased traditional roles in the high school ranks—our 6'9" players are bringing the ball up the court, and our point guards are posting up. The style of play, the training methods, the offensive sets—they are all downstream from what works on the biggest stage. We're not just coaching high school basketball anymore; we're managing the earliest stage of a professional player's development pipeline. The most profound shift, however, is that the NBA is no longer waiting for players to come to them. They're coming straight to the high school gym. With pathways like the G League Ignite and Overtime Elite offering six-figure contracts, teenagers are now direct employees of professional leagues before they can even attend their senior prom. This has turned the elite level of high school hoops into a de facto minor league. The pressure has changed, too. It's not just about winning for your school; it's about draft stock, social media followers, and multi-million dollar NIL valuations. A 17-year-old's highlight reel is now a business asset. While the heart of the high school game—the teamwork, the discipline, the love of competition—is still there if you look for it, it's now wrapped in a professional package. We're living in a new era where the line between a high school phenom and a young pro has been all but erased. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Welcome to Episode 68 of Music in the Minor League! This week, we're joined by Anna La Mare! Anna tours as a solo artist and also fronts her band, Damn Sam. She currently travels back and forth between Texas living and playing in both locales. Her bio reads: Singer-songwriter Anna La Mare has been described as "emotional honey," "folky Florence and the Machine," "indie Joan Baez" and "a soul-driven embodiment of Joni Mitchell." Her haunting folk Americana, touched by Celtic, Appalachian, and jazz influences, is as vulnerable as it is brave, offering you a home within her stormy and poetic soundscape. With her ghostly, road-worn and soulful voice, La Mare (Lah MAH-ray) sings the stories she's picked up in her travels, enlivening the wanderer in every listener. We made sure to leave the pronunciation in there since Samuel had such a hard time with it. Enough that Anna had to use the phrase "Damn, Sam!" in more ways than just talking about her band. We hope you enjoy the interview and we'll see you in a couple of weeks with episode 69!

Send us a textBack in September 2021, we interviewed Matt Leis, and in Episode 149 we're catching up with him again to hear about his transition from the golf course to sports fields. Matt is now the Manager of Fleet & Irrigation at the Papago Baseball Complex for the San Francisco Giants Baseball Club in Phoenix, AZ. The 40-acre complex is home to player development and Minor League operations, featuring six full fields, auxiliary surfaces, and a 15,000 sq. ft. facility. As the solo technician in the shop, Matt oversees a Toro fleet, preventive maintenance, and the RainBird irrigation and pump systems while supporting the Field Operations team. We dive into the unique challenges of sports fields—precision grading, grooming artificial turf, finding cleats in mowers—and how the players' calendar drives cultural practices. Matt also shares how refereeing college football fits into his busy schedule, along with his professional growth through the GCSAA EMCP and CTEM programs and the Toro Grounds Leadership Academy. Welcome to episode 66 of Music in the Minor League! This week, we're talking to Scott Schaafsma of Kerosene Stars. We first heard Kerosene Stars when they played with MiML alums, Junebird, last year. We've seen them quite a few times since then and even had the opportunity to play a show with them recently. So, it just made sense to hassle Scott about doing an episode of the podcast.Kerosene Stars is an American power-pop/rock band originally formed in Chicago, IL. Then, in 2023, Scott moved to the Houston area and started a new version of the band. The catch is that he never broke up the Chicago version, so both branches of the band operate simultaneously and perform in their own regions depending on where Scott is. It's a pretty cool concept. We hope you enjoy the conversation and learn all you hope to about Kerosene Stars! We'll see you again next week as we catch up from our summer break!

Journalist Will Bardenwerper joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his new book, Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America, which explores the consequences of Major League Baseball cutting 40 affiliated minor league teams, each one only as expensive as an average Major League salary. He explains how the accessibility and affordability of minor league baseball has made it a unique gathering point for working-class communities like the one in Batavia, New York, where Bardenwerper followed the local team, the Muckdogs, for a season. He celebrates the traditions and resilience of the Muckdogs fans and owners, who revived the team after it was eliminated as a minor league franchise. This week we return from our July break with episode 65 of Music in the Minor League. This episode brings us back to our near second home at this point: Fort Collins, CO. We'll be talking to Slp (pronounced 'slip') of Maudlyn Monroe.Classically trained, with a love for riot grrl and 70's NY punk, Maudlyn Monroe is a vocalist/guitarist/saxophonist/pianist with an up-tempo emo feel—an electrified lackadaisical punk. Their voice, with its three octave range, has been called "angelic" and "soulful", "bird-like" and "desperate", and lends to quiet folk contemplation, shocking soul, and raw punk sounds. We had an absolute blast spending an evening discussing music, life and so much else with Slp. If y'all have half as much fun listening as we did recording this one, this will be one of our most popular episodes. Enjoy!
