Get on the wait list, launching this fall. (Say it "Hey Sammy," spelled H E Y S A I.) Coach Bill sits down with Fred Wilson, a Bay Area youth soccer legend who started as a volunteer rec coach at Mustang Soccer in 1989 and now oversees one of the largest and most respected clubs in the country. Along the way he helped launch the San Jose Earthquakes Academy and spent eight years there. The conversation opens with the hard question. Mustang measures heart rate, workload, game analytics, and eventually psychological profiles. So at what point does helping a kid improve turn into watching a kid too closely? Fred's answer is the thread that runs through the whole hour: the data is only ever a starting point, because you cannot measure head and heart, and none of it works without the relationship. From there it goes into the tech stack, the culture work Mustang did with Winning Leader, how a volunteer board evolved into a collaborative governance structure, why kids should play multiple sports, and a rapid fire round that every club director should sit with. Fred's central caution about the data era. All the biodata, game analytics, and psychological profiling in the world still leave out the intangibles a kid brings to the field. The measurement only earns trust when there is a real relationship behind it with the player and with the family, and when everyone understands the purpose clearly. The purpose is an objective basis from which a player can improve. Nothing more, nothing less. When Fred started down this road, a friend told him he did not want to, because he would drown in data and need a data scientist to explain it. That turned out to be exactly true. Mustang had spreadsheets full of statistics and players looking at them asking what any of it meant, with no comparative and no predictive value at the youth level. Two people fixed it. Dana Taylor, a former Quakes colleague, came in as the data scientist who made it usable for coaches. And a parent in the club who does analytics across industries looked at roughly 800 to 900 games of data and found patterns. That analysis surfaced 19 algorithms hiding in the data that identified KPIs tied to winning. The one Fred quotes: when Mustang broke the defensive third of the opponent more often than the opponent broke theirs, they won 94 percent of the time. Those were being pulled manually at first. Mustang went back to Bepro and asked them to generate it inside the system. Now a coach opens it and sees Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Luisa Palacios on Rebuilding Venezuela's Oil Industry After the Quakes

It started last year as a pressure campaign at sea, with the United States seizing  tankers as part of what President Trump called a "total and complete blockade" of vessels carrying Venezuelan crude subject to US sanctions. It crescendoed on January 3, when US forces captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, bringing him and his wife to New York on narcoterrorism charges. Since Maduro's removal, confusion remains over whether—and to what extent—the US is controlling the country's oil sector. But one thing is clear: despite holding the world's largest oil reserves, Venezuela is producing at a fraction of its former levels, and its path to recovery is anything but certain. A national tragedy has only added to the instability. In June, twin earthquakes claimed more than 5,000 lives. While the country's energy infrastructure did not sustain significant damage, the quakes exposed deep fault lines in the country's political leadership and served as a stark reminder of an already long-standing humanitarian crisis in the region.   So what's the state of the energy sector and energy investments in Venezuela? How has the global energy crisis changed the calculus for prospective energy developers? What role is the Trump administration playing in the sale of Venezuelan oil? And where is oil production headed?  Today on the show, Jason Bordoff speaks with Luisa Palacios about the state of the Venezuelan energy sector, efforts around creating new policies to boost oil production, and the impact of the June earthquakes. Luisa is an adjunct senior research scholar at the Center on Global Energy Policy (CGEP) at Columbia University, where she previously served as head of research. Before joining CGEP, Luisa was chairwoman of Citgo Petroleum Corporation, the US refining arm of Venezuela's state oil company, PDVSA. Credits: Hosted by Jason Bordoff and Bill Loveless. The highs and lows from the past week indicate that there is a lot to polish on this FC Cincinnati squad before the Leagues Cup. Much can be said about "highs" and "lows" describing the last time the Orange & Blue clashed against this week's opponent, the San Jose Earthquakes. Back in 2024, Cincinnati pulled off an incredible come-from-behind effort at San Jose, riding a Yuya Kubo hat trick off the bench. However, that was the last match with Matt Miazga, who was lost for the season due to a knee injury. Since then, the Quakes have retooled the front office, and that influx of positivity has been felt in the roster. 2025 was a bounce-back season for San Jose behind Bruce Arena, and 2026 has started with just as much momentum, despite an injury list that has taken vital spots off the roster. We ask Abram from Tectonic Takes to give us his opinion on San Jose's drastic change to the attack and the recharge of youth in the lineup. How different will this result be from the last time the Quakes came to TQL? Tune in and trade threads with us! #MLS #FCCincinnati #soccer Become a Patron! It's hard to think of anything good coming from earthquakes. But for life in part of the Southern Ocean, they could be crucial. A recent study found that underwater quakes could intensify “blooms” of phytoplankton. These tiny plant-like organisms form the base of the marine food web. They also absorb carbon dioxide from the air, and release oxygen. So anything that bumps up their numbers a bit is good for life in the Southern Ocean and around the planet. Every spring and summer, a big bloom develops between Antarctica and New Zealand and Australia. But three decades of satellite photos revealed a huge range in the size of the bloom. Some years, it covers an area the size of Delaware. In others, it can be dozens of times larger—as big as California. The blooms are fed by iron—a key nutrient. But there's not a lot of it in the Southern Ocean. And the location of the annual bloom isn't near any of the most common sources of iron. So researchers looked for a “deeper” cause. They found that the bloom occurs in a region with lots of underwater volcanoes. “Vents” pump hot, iron-rich fluids into the water—possibly feeding the bloom. Records of volcanic activity in the region showed that, when the ocean floor was rocked by earthquakes of magnitude five or greater in the months before a bloom, the event was much bigger. The tremors might clear out blocked vents, or create new ones, boosting the amount of iron in the water—a positive impact for earthquakes. The post Bloomin’ Quakes appeared first on Marine Science Institute. The University of Texas at Austin..

Devastating back-to-back earthquakes rocked Venezuela, killing hundreds, but the US is on it's way. The Supreme Court delivered major rulings reshaping law on immigration, guns, and more. Meanwhile, Democratic Socialists of America scored huge primary wins, escalating their challenge to establishment Democrats. In this episode, we also debunk the myth that "government services equal socialism." Firefighters, roads, and Social Security are not Democratic Socialism. True socialism owns the means of production. There is a clear difference between limited government and expanding state control. Today's episode is essential listening for anyone concerned about liberty, economics, and America's future. Ep. 123 of The Alan Sanders Show. The Tim Conway Jr. Show Hour 1 (6.16) In this episode, we’re diving into some of the biggest, boldest, and most talked-about stories making waves right now. First, five people have been arrested after the FBI reportedly foiled a shocking drone and sniper plot connected to White House Fight Night. Then, we welcome World Cup fans to America as visitors praise the country’s beauty and the kindness of Americans. While local news often focuses on what is wrong, today we’re taking a moment to say: be proud of this country. Next, we head to the coast to talk about great white shark nurseries, where the hot spots are, and why California could see a major surge in sharks with El Niño conditions on the way. From shark bite power to why sharks usually reject humans as prey, we break down the fascinating facts behind one of the ocean’s most misunderstood predators. We also talk emergency preparedness as tectonic stress along Southern California’s San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems reaches alarming levels. Get water. Store water. Be ready. Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 3 (6.8) Conway kicks off the hour with the latest on Primm casino resorts, as LV Petroleum emerges as a leading potential buyer and operator trying to save the properties before a possible July 4 shutdown. The desert drama continues as the Primm family looks for a new partner to keep the casino town alive. Then the news turns global and wild: a plane headed to pick up MLB legend Yadier Molina and his family crashes on its way to Texas, a massive 7.8 earthquake strikes the southern Philippines, and a rare 6.1 earthquake rattles off the coast of Cuba. The crew jumps into NBA Finals fever with Knicks vs. Spurs, Game 3, and the insane ticket prices surrounding New York’s run — from thousands just to get in the building to courtside seats going for hundreds of thousands. Later, Conway gets into new weight-loss drugs, changing body sizes, and how GLP-1s are creating chaos for retail returns as people keep swapping clothes while trying to find their new size. Plus, Bellio’s yacht wedding, Conway trying to escape a cruise, strange things spotted on walks, and one beard that was apparently a total turnoff. The hour wraps with the sad wave of Southern California restaurant closures, including memories of Gulliver’s in Newport Beach, as rising food costs, labor costs, regulations, and changing spending habits put pressure on longtime local favorites.
