    Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 8, 2025 is: finicky • FIN-ih-kee • adjective Finicky describes someone who is very hard to please, or something that requires a lot of care, precision, or attentive effort. // Although she was a finicky eater as a child, she grew up to become a world-renowned chef famous for her encyclopedic knowledge of global ingredients. // The latest game in the series boasts amazing graphics but the controls are a little finicky. See the entry > Examples: "Stardom is a fleeting concept, one that we've seen play out with the biggest of stars over time. Even without outright missteps, artists often find themselves scrutinized by the masses for reasons entirely unrelated to their work. More often than not, this pressure either drives them to prove their worth to a finicky fanbase—one that will jump ship the second something else catches their attention—or pushes them back into obscurity." — Aron A., HotNewHipHop.com, 22 Aug. 2025 Did you know? If you're a reader of a certain age (say, a Boomer, Gen Xer, or even a Xennial) you may remember cheeky television commercials featuring Morris, a finicky housecat who only eats a certain brand of cat food. (Morris is still featured on product labels.) Morris's tastes in cuisine are not only very particular, but very fine as well, and that's appropriate given the origin of finicky. The word came about in the early 19th century as an alteration of finicking, itself a 17th century alteration of another adjective, finical, which in turn is a late 16th century coinage likely derived from the adjective fine.

John shares insights on how to audit these components and the significance of training employees in hospitality to enhance customer interactions. Takeways: To create customer evangelists, excel in six key areas. Physical experience often gets overlooked until it's a problem. Atmosphere can transform emotional connections to brands. Ease of doing business is crucial for customer satisfaction. Technical excellence should be a differentiator, not just a requirement. Operational details are often invisible but impactful. Hospitality is about how you make customers feel valued. Training for hospitality is often undervalued in organizations. Regular audits of customer experience components are essential. Improving one area can lead to quick wins in customer loyalty.

Summary: In this episode, John R. DiJulius III and Denise Thompson discuss the importance of taking time for personal growth through sabbaticals, the evolving job market dynamics leading to a trend of loyalty among employees, the stark contrast in compensation between CEOs and average workers, and the philosophy surrounding wealth and generosity. They explore how societal expectations and corporate practices shape our understanding of success and responsibility. Takeways: Taking a sabbatical can lead to personal and professional growth. The job market is shifting towards valuing employee loyalty over job hopping. CEO compensation has drastically outpaced worker wages, raising concerns about corporate greed. Generosity and giving back can lead to a more fulfilling life than hoarding wealth. The concept of stakeholder capitalism is gaining traction but lacks meaningful implementation. Economic trends show that staying in a job may now be more beneficial than switching for higher pay. The disparity in wealth distribution is a pressing issue that needs addressing. Corporate practices often prioritize shareholder wealth over employee welfare. Generosity should be a priority for those who have achieved financial success. The conversation around wealth and its responsibilities is evolving. The common denominator in Kimia Behpoornia's career is fun, and she's pursued it everywhere from her childhood math classes to some of TV's most beloved comedy series. This week, she joins Mo to reflect on her creative collaborations with her wife and her best friend, how she navigated being a queer kid—even before she had the language to express it, and why she'll never run for office. Follow Kimia on Instagram @childclown! Worse Than You with Mo Fry Pasic is hosted and produced by Mo Fry Pasic. Our executive producers are Erica Getto, Myrriah Gossett, and Lauren Mandel. It has become habitual to think of our relationship with energy as one of transition: with wood superseded by coal, coal by oil, oil by nuclear and then at some future point all replaced by green sources. Jean-Baptiste Fressoz's devastating but unnervingly entertaining book shows what an extraordinary delusion this is. Far from the industrial era passing through a series of transformations, each new phase has in practice remained almost wholly entangled with the previous one. Indeed the very idea of transition turns out to be untrue. The author shares the same acute anxiety about the need for a green transition as the rest of us, but shows how, disastrously, our industrial history has in fact been based on symbiosis, with each major energy source feeding off the others. Using a fascinating array of examples, Fressoz describes how we have gorged on all forms of energy – with whole forests needed to prop up coal mines, coal remaining central to the creation of innumerable new products and oil still central to our lives. The world now burns more wood and coal than ever before. This book reveals an uncomfortable truth: ‘transition' was originally itself promoted by energy companies, not as a genuine plan, but as a means to put off any meaningful change. More and More and More: An All-Consuming History of Energy (Harper, 2025) forces its readers to understand the modern world in all its voracious reality, and the true nature of the challenges heading our way. Jean-Baptiste Fressoz is a historian at the CNRS and the EHESS. He works on the history of the contemporary environmental crisis. He is currently working on the history of energy and material symbioses in the 19th and 20th centuries. Sidney Michelini is a post-doctoral researcher working on Ecology, Climate, and Violence at the Peace Research Institute of Frankfurt (PRIF).
