In 2001, a German computer technician named Armin Meiwes posted an online ad asking if anyone wanted to be slaughtered and eaten. It was not a joke, not role play, and not a misunderstanding. Hundreds of people replied. One of them was Bernd Brandes, a successful engineer who fully understood what was being offered and agreed to it.After weeks of explicit communication, Brandes traveled to Meiwes's farmhouse in rural Germany. What followed was hours of prolonged violence, recorded on video, ending with Brandes being killed and cannibalized. Meiwes stored the remains in his freezer and continued eating them for months. What finally led to his arrest was not remorse, but another online post looking for a new victim.The case left Germany's legal system facing an unprecedented question. If the victim agreed, was it murder. In Meiwes's first trial, the court said no and convicted him of manslaughter. Public outrage followed. Prosecutors appealed, arguing the killing was driven by personal gratification and ritualized planning. In 2006, a higher court agreed. Armin Meiwes was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison, drawing a clear legal line that consent does not excuse killing.

In a special encore episode, we're reposting our episode from 2020.In this episode, we commemorate the anniversary of the tragic events of May 4th, 1970 at Kent State University, where agents of the state murdered 4 students and shot 9 others. Students, who'd been told the war was winding down in Vietnam, erupted in protest at campuses all over America when Richard Nixon announced the U.S. invasion of Cambodia on April 30th. At Kent State, a working-class public school in Northeast Ohio, protesting students and other burned down an ROTC building, a common target in the Vietnam protest era, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes, vowing a violent response, mobilized the National Guard and sent them to Kent. For two days the students and Guard skirmished, with the paramilitaries hurling tear gas and intimidating students. On May 4th, the Guard, unprovoked, started shooting into the crowd of students and shot 13, killing 4, from distances beyond 300 feet. These were extrajudicial killings and a sure sign the state would murder anyone who challenged its interests. The war had come home! A Louisiana father fatally shot eight children, including seven of his own, in an attack on his family Sunday morning that stretched across two houses. It is considered one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent years, and it stemmed from a domestic disturbance. What can we take away from this case and how do we combat domestic violence in America? We spoke with former chief of police, Gary MacNamara, who is also on the board for the Center for Family Justice, advocating and helping families in Connecticut impacted by domestic violence.

He ate pizza on a Manhattan sidewalk and threw the crust in a public trash can. Investigators were watching. That discarded crust — legally recovered as an abandonment sample — carried DNA that matched a male hair found in the burlap wrapping around Megan Waterman's body on Ocean Parkway. Months of surveillance, one piece of garbage, and the entire Gilgo Beach case broke open.Megan was 22. A mother from Scarborough, Maine, who called her three-year-old daughter every single day. When those daily calls stopped in June 2010, her family reported her missing within two days. Surveillance footage from the Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge captured her walking out the door at 1:15 a.m. to meet a client. She was found six months later alongside Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Amber Lynn Costello — the Gilgo Four.Rex Heuermann stood in a Suffolk County courtroom and pleaded guilty to murdering all seven women he was charged with killing — Barthelemy, Brainard-Barnes, Costello, Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and Waterman. He also admitted to intentionally causing the death of Karen Vergata, an eighth victim. He confirmed all eight were killed by strangulation. Prosecutors allege his electronic devices held checklists, methodology notes, and instructions for destroying evidence — a digital blueprint stored in a home he shared with his family. Every killing allegedly took place when his wife and children were away.His attorney described the plea as "relief." The deal requires Heuermann to cooperate with the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit. Houston police say they have finally solved a 36-year-old murder mystery, after a tip and DNA evidence led them to the man they say is the killer responsible for the “Lover’s Lane Murders.” 64-year-old Floyd Willis Parrott is charged with murder for viciously killing 22-year-old Cheryl Henry and 21-year-old Andy Atkinson back in 1990. A man who has twice been ruled insane after committing two separate killings can now be named. RNZ can reveal the man is Leslie Raymond Parr who killed two people more than two decades apart - beheading his partner Fiona Maulolo in 1997, and then in 2024 fatally stabbing his mother Heather Condon.
