Send us a textTrigger Warning : Loss of a Parent due to Suicide is discussed. If you are sensitive to this topic please skip this episode of the podcast. Lew stops by the show to discuss, finding his voice, moving across country to pursue his dream, his father's suicide, his debut album Fool's Gold and more.******“'No Room In Hell' is a rose-tinted daydream and an embodiment of the whole record,” says genre-defying soul artist Lew Apollo about his luminous new single. The first glimpse of his highly anticipated debut album Fool's Gold, which is out August 8, 2025, the track is a masterclass in emotional duality, pairing honeyed production with themes of longing and illusion and setting the tone for a record that is equal parts cinematic and soul-baring. “‘No Room In Hell' came to me in about 45 minutes,” he explains. “I was in a good mood, riding high on discovering the band Jungle, and everything just clicked—the beat, the melody, the lyrics. It captures the exact energy of the record: shiny on the outside, but full of deeper questions underneath.”A Minnesota native now rooted in Austin, Texas, Lew Apollo has built a name as a bold new voice in modern soul—drawing comparisons to Hozier, Leon Bridges, and Labrinth, yet offering something entirely his own. Following the breakout success of his 2023 EP JUNGLE—which amassed over 150,000 streams in just two months—Lew's next chapter unfolds in Fool's Gold, a deeply personal exploration of mental health, grief, love, and the blurred lines between fantasy and reality. In 2022, Lew experienced a life-altering loss when his father died by suicide. The grief was shattering—but also galvanizing. His dad had always been the one cheering him on, the one sitting by the stairs to say his guitar sounded amazing, even when Lew couldn't believe it himself. In the months that followed, Lew began writing with even greater urgency and vulnerability. His music became not just a creative outlet, but a space to grieve, honor, and connect. He now writes openly about mental health, isolation, and anxiety—not as a solution, but as a way to remind listeners that they aren't alone.*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Disclaimer: This episode includes brief use of strong language. As part of our mission to support real, lived experiences in tech, we've chosen to preserve the authenticity of this conversation. 2023 was not a great year for Betsy Tong. Only three years after losing her mother to cancer, Betsy found herself navigating a series of personal challenges - a sick father, the end of a long-term relationship - and sudden unemployment at the age of 56. For years, Betsy had been a near-unstoppable Tech Industry badass, leading teams that developed complex systems for companies like IBM, Lenovo, Symantec, and Intel. But now, just when she thought she'd be able to coast and enjoy the payoff of all her hard work, Betsy's entire life felt like it was falling apart. For the first time in decades, Betsy had no idea what her next step was - or how she'd achieve it without the clout of a big company behind her. But, Betsy did figure it out, and in this episode she talks to Brenda about how she set aside fear, resolved to reinvent herself, and ultimately found purpose - and a thriving second act - in helping other women do the same through her consulting firm, FocusOS. Brenda and Betsy talk about what it takes to release outdated assumptions, rebuild the architecture of our authority, and recognize the unexpected people who help us find our way, like Betsy's own “Shannon.” For more, check out Betsy on... This week on the pod we welcome the one and only Phoebe Tonkin; actress, producer, fashion icon, and all-round mega babe. Tonks has captivated audiences for years; whether she's splashing onto our screens as a mermaid in H2O, romancing the undead in The Vampire Diaries, casting spells in The Secret Circle, dominating Aussie TV with her award-winning turn in Boy Swallows Universe, or lighting up the pages of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Marie Claire. She joins her bestie Tez and our gal Sarah for a juicy, joy-filled chat that goes everywhere. We dive into the early days of Your Zen Life, the swirl of the wellness world, and the intense pressure of being a 20-something in Hollywood. The girls reflect on championing each other through the industry, learning from their younger selves, finding your voice (and losing it along the way), and why being each other's biggest cheerleaders matters more than ever. Phoebe also spills on her stunning NYC wedding, the epic new show she's leading, and the full-circle moment of presenting each other with recent acting awards. Sisterhood and Soul chats, just how we like it! This episode is proudly sponsored by Cookie Jam, Branch Basics and Wayfair.
