Tim Paton is Irys Photos Global Partnerships Manager, and has worked in and around photos a photography his entire career. We spoke recently and he offered to come onto the show to talk about the commercial realities of photography today. This is a great conversation for anyone who wants to make photography their job. More about this show:A camera is just a tool but spend enough time with photographers and you'll see them go misty eyed when they talk about their first camera or a small fast prime that they had in their youth. Prime Lenses is a series of interviews with photographers talking about their photography by way of three lenses that mean a lot to them. These can be interchangeable, attached to a camera, integrated into a gadget, I'm interested in the sometimes complex relationship we have with the tools we choose, why they can mean so much and how they make us feel.

Marcus says that Flash used to be challenging many years ago. But now life is much simpler. Sam asks about Chinese copy brands, but Marcus says that with modern lighting, the Chinese equipment isn't a copy; they are the originators. Marcus is going to be talking about Godox lighting, which is sometimes known by a couple of other brand names. He is going to give anideal kit to have with you. Marcus says you want your lighting all to be the same brand; otherwise, your lights will not communicate with each other, so this is essential. A handheld or on-camera mounted flash is what we are goingto talk about first. Sam digs out one of these from his cupboard. Marcus says these simple flashes are great and often five times cheaper than the camera brand flashes. Godox's camera flash is called the V1. This is the basic start, and it goes onto the hot shoe of your camera. The next level up is to get aremote that goes onto your hot shoe. That allows you to put your flash where you want; it is no longer tied to the camera. Once you have a remote, all other flashes need to be the same brand to communicate with the remote. The next thing needed is a main light. Marcus recommends that if you get one, then a Godox pro light, which is near the top of the range, is worth getting. The flash head is very large on the Godox pro range, which Marcus likes. The flash head is also diffuse, and the glass is diffuse, not clear. Marcus also says he recommends going for a high-power flash. The main reason is that the batteries are so good and have almost no time to recharge between shots. Marcus also says that some of these lights can also separate the light and battery, so the lighter light can be on a stand without the battery being on the stand too. Finally, Marcus talks about a modifier. A modifier goes onto the light to modify it. Marcus says the best modifier to get is an umbrella.  Marcus doesn't recommend the Godox umbrella. He recommends going for a more expensive umbrella. He says they last longer, and reflective material is better. He recommends getting an umbrella that is at least 1 metre across. There is also an alternative to an umbrella, which Marcus describes. To get the Shoot to the Top Podcast in your inbox every week, click here And to join the Shoot to the Top Facebook group here.

Phillip Noth Coombes started Photographers United as aFacebook group. Graham Diprose is also a part of this. He was a commercial photographer in the 70s to 90s. And then taught at the London College of Communication. He also wrote books about the River Thames, and one about Henry Taunt. You can find all Graham's books hereThe group is now called Photographers United Pro. The group started in 2018 from an idea Phil had on a dog walk. He thought photographers were all working alone at home, and he wanted photographers to be able to communicate. So he built a community of commercial photographers to help each other and help sustain the industry. Graham is a real help in bringing in the photography students with all his work with photographer education links. Sam asks if Phil has created a modern version of a photography association. Phil thinks that he has, but in some ways, this group is different. This group doesn't charge; it's about helping each other. There are also no grades within the group. Everyone is equal and has their skills and experience. There areabout 3,400 members on the Facebook group, and lots of members are sharing their ideas and helping each other. There are other parts of the group beyond the Facebook group. They try and arrange socials so people can meet in person. They also arrange in-person meetings where they bring people together, and some speakers give talks. The group also deals with education, which Graham is dealing with. The group also has a range of discounts for members. A member of the group got a job at an auction house. So some members put work into frames and put them into the auction, and lots were sold. The group don't run courses themselves, but have a very good idea of what courses are on offer in theUK and can guide people to the right place. Lots of leaders of courses are in the group too, which is a great benefit to student members. Marcus asks if they have some advice for photographers.Graham says Be prepared. He says when working with film, a lot less gets edited post-shoot, so the shot had to be perfect. This meant planning had to be spot on, and that is a really useful skill even with digital photography. Graham saysthat being able to complete a risk assessment is vital to protecting yourself.  Phil says Get out there and meet people. Be bold, creative and make connections. Phil says he started by literally knocking on doors. His second idea is to keep fresh, keep re-inventing yourself and keep clients. He says these things are linked, as having new ideas means you havesomething new to offer your regular clients. Phil asks Marcus the same question.Marcus says ideas are very important. Phil says building a great team is also very important, and as part of this, an assistant is very helpful. Graham says as part of this that many photography courses have students in their second andthird year who are looking for experience. And they can make amazing assistants. Graham says he is happy for photographers to contact him to get help with this.Graham has been doing quite a lot of work on neuro-diversityand looking at how this can be seen as an asset in some areas rather than a problem. To join the Photographers United Pro group, you have to have :A website A businessInsuranceThis ensures that only those in the industry are in the group. Growing up in North Carolina, in order to be as enthused about snowboarding as I was living in Raleigh, one resorted to VHS & DVD's to get stoked. Some of you may be very familiar with this approach and even perhaps with some of the production companies such as Standard Films and Mack Dawg Productions. Well, those were great, but it was a small crew which made up Robot Food that absolutely had me watching videos over and over and among that crew was Jussi Oksanen.Jussi was always one of a handful of my favorite riders to watch year after year - his style was fun, his creativity was clear, and I truly believe Robot Food wouldn't have been the same without him. Long story short, in combination of Instagram DM's and our mutual friend Matt, we set up a time to record, and I'm thrilled to share it with you today.Though retired from snowboarding, Jussi is still very much outdoors, though behind the camera as a commercial photographer producing images with the same sort of stoke-inducing outcomes. We chat cars, his snow career, cycling, of course watches, and I'll have you know Jussi's a real one. I hope you enjoy it. STANDARD H https://standard-h.com/ @standardh_ Jussi Oksanen @jussioksanen

He also lets us in on a nonprofit project that he's bringing to Tulsa that will provide keepsake portraits for people in need.  As you'll learn, he's been a part of the team in the past and has seen the impact first-hand of what the photos provide to the people who are the recipients. In fact, you'll hear a sweet story about one of the people who had her portrait taken.

“The secret to life is to put yourself in the right lighting. For some, it's a Broadway spotlight; for others, a lamplit desk. Use your natural powers -- of persistence, concentration, and insight -- to do work you love and work that matters. Solve problems. make art, think deeply.” ~ Susan Cain Guest Introduction:  Welcome to another episode of Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. Self-love, well-being and mindset are at the heart of our conversations. Because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well. I'm your host Cindy MacMillan and I'm so grateful that you tuned in today; it means a lot to me. If you love this conversation and you want to continue it or want to share your thoughts, your takeaways, or just any aha's that come up…come on over to Instagram. That is where I spend most of my time when it comes to social media. I'm @cindy.macmillan on Instagram. Make sure you're following me. Say hello. I'd love to hear from you. It's my great pleasure to introduce you to Tanya Rex. Tanya Rex is a Commercial Photographer and Intuitive Guide and Whole Healing Practitioner. She currently guides successful women, who have lost themselves in the daily grind, to rebalance and find their truth through unconditional self-love. Her passion is working with teens and she will be shifting over to this solely and launching an 8 week course for teens in a few weeks. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Tanya, I'm SUPER excited you are here. 3:15 One night as I was going to bed, I had this feeling that I had to help teenagers through photography, to find themselves through photography. And I didn't know how I was going to do it. But I thought I'll sleep on it. And tomorrow morning, I'll figure it out. And by the time I woke up the next morning, I had the whole plan in my head. 4:29 I started connecting with teenagers around the world, the whole project started to come together. And as I mentioned, I didn't really think about the logistics and especially since the world had kind of shut down. It wasn't always that easy to get cameras to refugee camps in Sudan or into India that was under complete lockdown for almost a year. But somehow, I managed to get to, I think it was 18 or 20 countries. 8:57 The first roll of film that I got back was from a 12-year-old boy who lived in Belarus. And one of the first images that he took was of his mother and sister lying in a cast iron bath that was in a field and it was being heated by a fire from underneath. And the way that he just captured life and innocence and his story, you know, his vision, what he saw was unbelievable. 17:41 I think I've had three seasons of life so far. And they have nothing to do with my age, or anything like that. It's more around, I guess, spirituality. I grew up in a very religious family and as a teen, I started asking questions, and I didn't really find answers. So, I would say that I have walked away from religion and rather accepted morality as my way of being so The Ten Commandments gave me a great background for what I thought good morals were. And now I'm in a space of spirituality and it just feels more all-encompassing, and more wholesome, if I can say that, for me personally. 26:18  I'm sure it comes as no surprise, since what I've been talking about is photography that the literal filters that so many people are using on various social media platforms are causing big issues with self-perception, self-image and self-esteem. And many people are only seeing a filtered and edited version of other people's lives, that's hard to live up to if you feel that you need to keep up with the Joneses. 34:57 I would love for listeners to be able to see the value of being themselves, of speaking their truth and of living in their own authenticity, however that looks. Because, as I mentioned before, I think so often we allow our ego to get in the way. And we only want to show certain parts of it, of our lives. But when we start to speak our truth and living our authenticity, it doesn't matter what anyone else is doing, once you realize the beauty of who you are, and you're able to shine past all of the limitations that you might feel that you have, or insecurities, or doubts and fears that you feel that you might have. 40:00 My website is SoulTribeCoaching.com.  You can find Tanya Rex at: Facebook Website IF YOU LOVED THIS EPISODE WITH TANYA REX YOU'LL ALSO LOVE THE CONVERSATIONS I HAD WITH: Niki Svara on Self-Forgiveness Cornelia Gilbert on Boundaries and Integrity Through the Lens of Yoga and Mindfulness with Elizabeth Savage Grief and Big Love in the Adoption Journey with Kim Noeth  I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for joining Tanya Rex and myself this week on Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast. This week's Misfit Entrepreneur is Jay Haleem Washington. Jay went from working for $8.00 an hour at the Hampton Inn to earning 6 figures as a Commercial Photographer in just a few years. He was able to accomplish all this while being a convicted felon. While working for $8.00 an hour he developed his mantra #IWon'tStarve, which was the catalyst for him to leave his job after only one year. he has become pardoned, and now is a best-selling author 4 times over and motivational speaker. Over his career, he's been able to work with the following international brands, Nike, Save The Children Foundation, NFL, Amtrak, and The WNBA. He focuses on strategic development of public sector business, management and administration of client contracts, and client protection via compliance oversight, resulting in growth through government contracting. But, it's not so much what Jay does that was the reason I asked him to come on the show as much as it was his message of “I won't Starve” and how he persisted through to success. www.Iwontstarve.com www.JHaleem.com Jay says it was a long journey. He was raised in a crazy home in New Jersey with people on drugs, etc. He was raised by his grandmother and was on the streets early on in life. He got into a lot of trouble but was also a great student. He was smart but using it for the wrong things. He graduated with honors from college, but also committed a white-collar crime that was felony trying to make money in college. After graduating, he was unable to get a job because of his record, so entrepreneurship was the answer. He started a successful cleaning business and did well, but during the 2008 recession, his wife lost her job on Capitol Hill, and he sold the business moving back down south to focus on raising their kids. He took an $8 job to have something, but new he could do much better and less than a year later started his commercial photography business. An in a short time the business climbed into 6-figures and then grew tremendously as he got into doing government contract work. He then started helping other minority businesses get approved for contracts and has now helped/consulted for over 600 helping them get contracts. He then went on to write his books, start speaking, etc. What are some of the success principles you've learned to succeed in business? Early on, it is all about heart and having the guts to do what needs to be done. You must personally develop. You can learn to do anything, and you must constantly learn. You must learn about the different types of people and how to work with them. You have to take your skill set and match it with others to create a beautiful picture. Perseverance. Building a business requires flexibility, endurance, and going through the challenges, learning curve, and progression of building a business. Talk to us about being persistent and what you learned about keeping going to succeed… Jay has seen a lot of people quit and decided it would not be him. Knowing he had good skillsets that no one could take away from him, that he could learn, and he was willing to hustle and do what was needed to succeed kept him going. Having children gave him the why he needed to continue driving forward. He also had seen what happened to people when they gave up and did not want that. Tell us about I Won't Starve. What does it mean? It came about from spending a lot of time being judged. Having to pay back 6-figures for his felony and the other costs made him have to hustle and find a way. When he made the decision to leave the $8/hr job, he basically said, “Screw it. I won't starve.” He embodied and started preaching it to anyone who would listen and it resonated. “The platform you leap from is more important that the platform you land on.” If you build the right platform, you won't starve! You have a workshop called UWon't Starve based on 5 principles, take us through them… #1: Hustle while you work. Strive to constantly learn from all those around and look for what you can use to help you succeed. Develop your skills. This works well if you are building a business on the side while working a job. #2: Market research. People jump into businesses all the time without understanding the market and how to succeed in it. Who needs your service? Where are they? How often are they buying? And so on. Take the time to have a decent understanding of the market before you leap. Start where you are, but be smart about it. #3: Be the one selling the cheese. This is metaphor. If you go to a wine festival, you will see some people like white wine and buy that, others buy only read, but both customers like to have cheese with their wine. Be the one selling the cheese, because then you get both customers instead of just one. Is your solution, the cheese? #4 and #5: Use strategic partnerships and JV's to grow. Partnerships are a great way to grow because you can create scenarios where 1 + 1 = 3. You both can benefit in a larger way that just on your own. Talk to us more about how to create great partnerships… We have to watch our egos are they can stop us from creating great partnerships. We can only get so far on our own. What does your business do that can complement other business's needs? What are you willing to do that other businesses are not? How can you help others become more successful? The more you help others get what they want, you will find you will get what you want and more. Partnerships are a business strategy and should be treated and planned for as such. What are some of the most consistent challenges you see entrepreneurs have and how do you help them overcome them? In the government contract space, it is paperwork and time. There is a lot of hoops to jump through and they don't move fast. You have to find your way into their system and once you get in, you are in good shape. But, you have to break through that barrier to get your first contract. It is networking and getting in front of the right people. Additionally, you need to build the right systems and teams in your business, so you can focus on the bigger picture and work on the business – not in it. Businesses are like a baby. At some point most people have to get a babysitter or day care of their baby so they can go to work. That is what it is like when you build systems and a team – they are the babysitter for your business, so you can truly go to work on it. Any other advice from your journey? Partner and teaming is the name of the game. Entrepreneurship is tough, so find others going through the same type of journey and network with them. Help each other. If it makes to have a partner in your business, do it.   Best Quote: The platform you leap from is more important that the platform you land on...   Jay's Misfit 3: You don't have as much time as you think, so go hard early going after what you want. Find people that will support you whole-heartedly. People with support systems go so much further in life than those that don't. Get your Amen Corner! Be unapologetically authentic. It hurts being someone else. Be you. Show Sponsors: Benchmark Email (Free account): www.MisfitEntrepreneur.com/Benchmark 5 Minute Journal: www.MisfitEntrepreneur.com/Journal
