Lately I have been fascinated by musicians who are creative not only in what they create, but also in terms of how they share it. This curiosity has made me a fan of Matt Sucich, an artist who has cultivated a passionate fanbase via his live performances, instagram livestreams, and thoughtful email newsletter. We are living in a moment of history where there is more music available than ever before, and more ways of interacting with creators than ever before. But it can be challenging to sift through all the noise and get to the heart of things. True intimacy in creative community is rare and I admire those who are able to sustain it. Matt is one of those people. If you are new to Sucich's catalog, I suggest starting with his thoughtful, inviting, pandemic-era album, ‘Don't Be So Hard On Yourself,' and then diving into his latest release, ‘Holy Smokes,' which is out now on Five and Dime Records. Matt and I talked about how the recording process for this new album differed from past releases, the role humor plays in his music, the open mic night that changed his life, his passion for puppets, what it means to show your work, and the songwriters who have shaped his worldview. He is one of the New York music scene's best-kept secrets, so welcome aboard the Sucich train!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
This week's guest is singer-songwriter Matt Sucich who joins us to talk about his 6 year old German/Australian Shepherd/Husky mix Mabel. Matt's new single Let Me Die (Before They Find Me Like This) was just released on January 20th and his album Holy Smokes will be out April 28th.
One of my favorite musicians Matt Sucich enters the Anxiety Lab! Matt is an NYC-based singer-songwriter who has played all kinds of places including Bonnaroo, Willie Nelson's Heartbreaker Banquet, Firefly, and Newport Folk Fest. One review said his latest album, Don't Be So Hard On Yourself, "feels like a good, honest talk with a close friend after a tough year." Matt was awesome and got incredibly vulnerable. We discuss intentional slowing down vs. laziness, health/unhealthy daydreaming and rockstar fantasies, expectations, being hard on yourself, embracing mistakes, how he defines connecting to an audience, and plenty more. Check out MattSucich.com and esmatteo (IG) to keep up tour dates, etc., and his songs are available on all platforms. You can also get in touch with me at theanxietylab@gmail.com or IG sagarbot. Music by Niall Connolly. Here's MERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/anxiety-lab. Lasatly, my free social gratitude app is landedapp.net.
The guys welcome Matt Sucich to talk about “This Desert Life” from Counting Crows. Plenty of other discussion including hidden tracks & Snood, plain white tees, our scoring system and sometimes a song just sucks, opening shows with the sun in your eyes, song titles with quotation marks, Monica Potter, David Lowery, the genius of Adam Duritz (and, really, the ENTIRE band), singing upside down, the song on the album that made Matt want to write songs, and Ben's favorite episode ending so far. Good Evening.Morning.Gracious.Gravy- The Olympics are in full swing and all I can think of are sports that I otherwise don’t know exist. Now I’m not typically a sports guy by ANY means. As a matter of fact They bore me to tears and get my bile roiling. But the Olympics guys. I’m a sucker for the pomp and circumstance. For the personal stories. For the shattering of records. “Ahh The triumph of human grit and determination!”, he mused from the couch. I think I’m going to go off Social media for a while this week. I’ll keep a journal for when I emerge again to the cloud to report my findings. My sneaking suspicion is that I’ll be far more of a balanced and fulfilled person, at least I hope I will be. I just can’t take anymore of this curated image management social media seems to bring out it all of us. It always leaves me feeling like my life should feel better than it does. I am the fatted calf meant for veal when I’m on social media. So I’m going to give it up for a bit. That’s not to say that I’m not going to be an email hound for brief (BRIEF I SAY!) moments throughout the day. Just in case anybody really needs me. THERE IS A LINE PEOPLE! This week on the show we have Matt Sucich, a great singer-songwriter from out of Queens. We talk about day jobs, finding the guitar in college, and our mutual love for Red Wing Boots. Get it! You can check Matt's music at these places: WEBSITE: http://www.esmatteo.comFACEBOOK.COM: https://www.facebook.com/MattSucichTWITTER: https://twitter.com/EsMatteoI got a piano off of craigslist. I have had it tuned. I am opening my mind back up again. More songs are coming, slowly over the hill, I can just see the tops of their heads. I’m coaxing them from the ether. I’ll keep you guys apprised to how it’s all going. Be Well, JN
Latest edition of Eric Hathaway's "Artist Portrait" series of interviews with local singer songwriters. Matt Sucich is a Queens based, born and bred, singer and songwriter well known in in New York, the Eastern USA and California. His strong lyrical sense mixes with an almost visceral sense for the rhythm of melody to create intelligent and well crafted songs that rise from the soul of a man who processes his life with the soul of a poet. In this program he talks about his family life and his experience as a developing musician, against a backdrop of his own recordings and those of musicians who have formed part of his life.
