The exciting supergroup Fantastic Cat is so great, we're featuring an episode on each one of it's members. So with this endeavor, you get 5 nextfavbands! You're welcome! They are all that good - trust us.Our second Cat is Brian Dunne, who is not your grandma's antiseptic, pseudo baby boomer singer songwriter. Known for his laugh-to-keep-from-crying, darkly humorous lyrics, Dunne's work reconfigures the limiting nature of the genre. This DIY ethos, born from a healthy New York cynicism self-conceptualized, funded, and dragged to every willing venue, found an easy home at Kill Rock Stars. Releasing his fourth album in early 2023, his first on KRS, Dunne is bending the sounds of American rock into masterfully composed, existentially poignant, wildly catchy renderings of being alive. We'll dive into his creative process where he loves songwriting, lyrics, titling the track, and album sequencing. He loves each part! We also spend time talking about the "inner critic" and how sometimes it can be motivating, and other times it can prevent you from creating and drive you mad. We'll share a bunch of tracks from Brian's catalog, like "Sometime After This", "New Tattoo" and "Something To Live For" and he'll regale us with a live performance during the broadcast. We then also get to the seminal moment when he joins the supergroup Fantastic Cat and share a few of those songs as well.We are joined this episode by guest co-host George Hrab who was just inducted in to the Podcast Hall of Fame!!So fantastic...indeed!Text us your thoughts on this episode, and who should be OUR #NextFavBand...As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". If you tuned in today because you already knew this musician - thank you very much! We hope that you enjoyed it and would consider following us and subscribing so we can bring you your #nextfavband in the future. Holding Space? What about Thickening Space?? Inspired by The Muppets, Ani DiFranco, Sinead O'Connor, and Joni Mitchell- queer music icon - B*TCH is here to talk about her musical memoir, B*TCHCRAFT at wild project. Sarah and B*TCH talk about political art, musical theatre, "thickening space" in acting class, violin, One Long Earring, and much much more! B*tch (Creator/Performer) is a longstanding queer music icon who Yahoo Entertainment called “a feminist force that the world needs now more than ever” when she released “B*tchcraft,” her 9th studio album, on the legendary label Kill Rock Stars in 2022. With her signature electric violin and lyrical smarts front and center over huge beats and deep synths, B*tch coined the genre “Poet Pop.” “B*tchcraft is a masterpiece,” said Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls. Both Indigo Girls and Ani DiFranco took B*tch on tour as their opener. Joey Soloway (Transparent) directed the music video for “Easy Target.” B*tch first achieved notoriety as one half of the folk duo B*tch and Animal. The duo had met in acting school at DePaul University (formerly the Goodman School of Drama), where B*tch was the recipient of the Merit Scholarship for two years in a row. They toured with Ani DiFranco, and released two albums on her label Righteous Babe Records, and were nominated for a GLAAD Media award in 2003. In 2004, B*tch went solo, and shared stages with the Indigo Girls, acted in John Cameron Mitchell's film “Shortbus,” co-wrote a song with Margaret Cho, and produced two albums of her elder and folk hero Ferron. Recently, she played a role in the new Audible podcast of Alison Bechdel's “Dykes To Watch Out For,” alongside Jane Lynch, Carrie Brownstein and Roxane Gay. The series was directed by Leigh Silverman (Suffs, Violet, Well), and Bitch co-wrote a song for it with Faith Soloway (Transparent, A Transparent Musical). Dan has admired Chiara D'Anzieri's music (under the Santa Chiara moniker) for a while now, and has wanted to have her on the show ever since. Chiara talks about coming to the US in her 20s after meeting Philly musician Ron Gallo on a beach in Italy while he was on tour, and how the adjustment to life over here was an up-and-down journey. Trained as classical cellist, Chiara spent most of her young life traveling to play with orchestras and ensembles, and made the decision to pursue rock and pop music as she got older. We talk travel, touring in the US, and her latest album, 'IMPORTED', which is available on Kill Rock Stars and everywhere you get your digital music. Santa Chiara is playing at Ardmore Music Hall on 10/21 as part of the first night of Philly Music Fest with Hurry and Slaughter Beach, Dog. This episode features an exclusive, unreleased song from Chiara that was recorded live at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia earlier this year. 'Want To Play A Song?: Live On 25 O'Clock Vol. 1' is out now exclusively on Bandcamp, and is a compilation of 10 unique performances from the podcast over the last ten years. All the proceeds from the compilation go to support Philly Music Fest's charitable giving. Every year, PMF donates all the profits from the festival to music non-profits all over Philadelphia. Since their inception, they've donated over $500K to music and education charities throughout the region.

In this episode, we meet pop auteur/singer-songwriter Kate Nash. Kate Nash has just released her brand new record - her first in a little bit - on Kill Rock Stars, entitled 9 Sad Symphonies. In this chat, Kate and I discuss her new record at length, especially what went into creating it and some of the underlying themes across its songs, such as mental health and wellness, depression, and love. We touch on her early material, such as her hit debut record Made of Bricks (which spawned successful singles like "Mouthwash" and "Foundations") and how her relationship to these songs has changed over time. We also talk the early MySpace days that helped give rise to her career, and why she has such a fondness for that era of the music business. And of course we talk about GLOW, the great Netflix series she starred in alongside Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, and more. We talk about what that show meant (and means) to her, and how sad we both are that it got unceremoniously canceled after three seasons. Thanks for listening!
On today's episode, I talk to musician Colin Meloy. Originally from Helena, Montana, Colin played in a few bands in high school and college before eventually forming The Decemberists in Portland, Oregon at the turn of the century. They released their first album, Castaways and Cutouts a few years later on Kill Rock Stars, who they continued to work with until eventually signing with Capitol Records. Since 2002, the band has released nine albums, and in addition, Colin has recorded a number of solo cover albums, starting with Colin Meloy Sings Morrissey almost two decades ago. The Decemberists latest album, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again, was just released in mid-June on YABB Records, and like everything else the band does, it's great! For the past three decades, Deerhoof have been one of the most consistently inventive rock bands around. Their seventh album, The Runners Four, remains a fascinating result of a band obsessively recording themselves in their practice space for many months. After Deerhoof first began as a solo harmonica project by Rob Fisk, drummer Greg Saunier joined only one week later. They signed to Kill Rock Stars and soon after Satomi Matsuzaki moved from Tokyo to San Francisco, she became the lead singer. They released their first two albums, and by 1999, Fisk ended up leaving the band, with guitarist John Dieterich joining later that year. Two additional albums followed and after this point, Chris Cohen came on as second guitarist. As a four-piece, they released Apple O' and Milk Man before turning their attention to their seventh album. This time around, they decided to embrace taking their time recording in their practice space, with each band member bringing in songs they had written. The result was the ambitious concept album, The Runners Four, which was eventually released in 2005. In this episode, Satomi Matsuzaki, Greg Saunier, John Dieterich and Chris Cohen, have an honest conversation about what it was like to be a band on the rise in the Bay Area and the pressure they felt to deliver a timeless record. Saunier describes the hours he spent tinkering with the free version of Pro Tools in a windowless practice space and the toll it took on his mental health. Matsuzaki talks about how swapping instruments with Cohen for this album, brought about a different rhythm and freed her up to sing some interesting vocal melodies. Dieterich describes using the then new technology of Line 6 POD amp simulators and how this approach allowed them to record in the practice space setting. Finally, Cohen describes the band members' interpersonal dynamics during this time and how he ended up leaving the band after this record. From self-mythologizing and writing songs about the band, to recording in the hallway, to embracing classic rock, to the intense relatability of Metallica's Some Kind of Monster, to a concept album about secret messages, time capsules and the flood, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Logan Lynn is a singer, songwriter, producer, filmmaker, and activist currently based in the Northwest. For the past 25 years, he has been recording and releasing music with Caroline, EMI and The Dandy Warhol's label, Beat The World. His newest record, Softcore, will release on June 7th via Kill Rock Stars, alongside a film of the same name. Logan shares his story of growing up in a Christian cult, how that led him to creating music in his youth and how he wound up in Portland, Or during his artistically formative years. He shares the love loss and self-motivated loneliness that inspired the new record and how he came to a Bill Callahan/Smog song as his lead single. He tells us about his involvement with Pass The Mic, a foundation started by Portugal The Man that advocates philanthropy and community engagement around universal issues related to human rights, community health, and the environment with a specific focus on the stories of Indigenous Peoples. Logan also shares his community's reaction to his attendance to a White House Pride event, and we hear a few tunes. Logan Lynn Kill Rock Stars Pass The Mic Foundation

On the show this time, it's the compelling “collage-rock” of Montreal's TEKE::TEKE. TEKE::TEKE is a rock band from Montreal, with the twist being that they play in the style of 1960's and 70's Japanese movie soundtracks. It is a big band - 7 musicians - and their diverse backgrounds help to drive their eclectic modern take on the psychedelic rock they use for inspiration. The name TEKE::TEKE refers to the classic sound of surf guitar, and originally, they formed to honor Japanese surf legend Takeshi Terauchi. Drums, bass, dueling guitars, trombone, and flute constitute an impressive sonic palette, but once you throw in traditional Japanese instruments, multilingual poetic lyrics, and a punk rock heart - you'd better hold on because it's gonna be a ride! The addition of one of the world's most charismatic front-persons, in the form of singer and fashion icon Maya Kuroki pushes the band from brilliant to downright extraordinary. This week, we talk about the longstanding American rock band Sleater-Kinney and their 11th album, Little Rope, which came out this month. The band rose out of the grunge and riot grrrl movements in the late 1990s with a raw, rage-filled sound and feminist lyrics. And they're one of the few all-women bands to have had a career this long. How has their sound evolved? And where did the angry countercultural music of the 90s go? Today on Too Opinionated, Kill Rock Stars recording artist Brennan Wedl drops by to talk about her new single 2 Dollar Pistol! Brennan Wedl documents those dizzying years spent in the world of ‘twenty-something'. Her radically unvarnished accounts detail an expansive universe that interweaves the everyday with scenes that might include catholic church camps, queer awakenings, one-night stands, or collapsed ‘forever' relationships. The result? An eminently relatable catalog of moments when profound realizations arrive unexpectedly. While she has been steadily releasing poignant dispatches as a solo artist since 2016, in 2024 she takes a striking step forward with a new series of singles that will be released via Kill Rock Stars. These recordings capture Wedl at her most unbounded and creatively impulsive; delivering sweetly lilting country one minute, and crashing rock the next, ringing out with jangling brightness at times and introspective in hushed acoustic guitar picking elsewhere. This impulsiveness is something that Wedl wrestles with daily. Much of her material is indirectly inspired by her quest to live cleanly after the realization that she couldn't live the life she wanted when drugs and alcohol were involved. However, in a move that is definitive of her approach, she explodes this specific experience into an allegory of life at large. Central is her tug of war between moderation and hedonism. A battle that she may, in any instant, apply to intoxicants, relationships, spirituality, sexual liberty, and beyond. The bubbling undercurrent throughout is a commitment to find comfort in restraint. Wedl's knack for encapsulating the moment has been apparent since co-founding the teen Boston band Dazey & The Scouts in 2017 and through their viral resurgence in 2020 as a new audience found themselves drawn to the allure of their self-described “hormonal freak show”. As she heads into 2024 her newest compositions prove that she remains viscerally attached to her emotional core and an acutely gifted narrator of life's highs and lows. Today's guest brings me back to a simpler time. Welcome Natalie Ribbons of Tele Novella. I learned about her family connection to radio and her parents' decision that she should be a concert pianist after they inherited a piano. While Natalie may have disagreed, it IS what got her singing and steered her to a performing arts high school (after getting kicked out of her previous school). That's where she took secret guitar lessons. She formed the band Agent Ribbons where everything was first time DIY. So they may have overdone a few things, maybe took a wrong turn or two. For example, after building up a following in California, moving to Texas because of two Weimaraners. And Natalie tells the story of the event that spelled the end of Agent Ribbons but how it simultaneously spawned Tele Novella. And it's STILL a rollercoaster ride. They weren't happy with the way things were going and Natalie left music for about three years. But leave it to good ol' PBR to bring ya back in. (That's beer for those who don't know). But the Pabst connection actually helped shape the sound of the band. Tele Novella has a new album out called Poet's Tooth. The music is reminiscent of the great western sounds I (and my dad) grew up on, like Marty Robbins. Listening to makes me feel like I'm right there with the band in Lockhart, TX. It's on Kill Rock Stars, so grab it, download it, or stream it. Follow tele_novella_tx on IG and TikTok, Tele Novella on FB. We are @PerformanceAnx on socials. Drawing inspiration from personal journals, Wedl explores the human condition through evocative melodies and character-driven narratives. Their 2021 EP, ‘Sleeping With Jeans On,' explores themes of masculinity in the hearland, joy, desolation, and community gardens. Today's guest makes me feel honored. It's Jad Fair and he doesn't do many interviews. So when we were able to make this happen, I was thrilled. Jad is one half of Half Japanese (¼ Japanese?). And he's not even actually Japanese! I learned that and a lot more in this episode. OK, I knew he wasn't any Japanese before doing this podcast. But what I DID learn was how Jad creates his unique music. It began when he and his brother David began creating music back in Michigan in the early 70's. That music came to the attention of a pre-Teller Penn Jillette. But Penn isn't the only collaboration Jad has had. In fact, that was just the beginning. Jad has played with some amazing people like Moe Tucker, Steve Fisk, and Daniel Johnston. And Jad's music isn't the only unique art he creates. He draws, makes paper cuttings that become album art, and even designed his own guitar that is held together by rubber bands and can be folded in half to make it easier to travel. We also touch on the different hurdles there are to getting noticed in music and how that has changed since Half Japanese started recording. Follow him on Instagram @jad.fair. Find his music on Kill Rock Stars, Joyful Noise, Fire Records, and Moon Records, and Bandcamp. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on X & Instagram. Merch is at performanceanx.threadless.com. Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with Kill Rock Stars recording artist/Nashville based Indie-rock/Americana band Roanoke regarding their fabulous new Fleetwood Mac tinged single “Back Again." Fronted by Taylor Dupuis(vocals/acoustic/songwriter), Joey Beesley (vocals/electric guitar/songwriter) Richard Bennett on bass, and B.L. Reed on electric guitar, Roanoke seamlessly blend a 70s/80s aesthetic with modern sensibility by delving into a mystic rock core. For 8 years, these elements have persisted in their music, evolving as the band has risen through the ranks of the independent rock scene. Mysticism is a primary component to the band's foundation and not only in their lyrical themes - the band's live shows bring their spirituality and mysticism all to fruition. Roanoke has grown into a road-tested outfit, retaining an affinity for raising energy and rich vocal harmony. Their live shows have won over audiences since the band first started touring 6 years ago. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)
Today I sit down with Andrea Walker and Solange Igoa from Portland-based queer indie folk-rock band Glitterfox. We discuss their experience living in a van, how their lived experiences drive the creative direction of their art, Solane's love of puppets, and their dedication to representing the most authentic versions of themselves with their art, by any means necessary. ✨ MORE ABOUT GLITTERFOX ✨ Glitterfox is a queer indie pop/rock band from Portland, Oregon, fronted by married couple Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker. Andy Iwancio is a comedian, creative and DJ. She's taken those niches and woven a beautiful creative quilt for herself. Cidny Bullens is not just a rock'n'roll lifer -- he's a survivor. He toured with Elton John and Bob Dylan and was nominated for two Grammys for his own solo work. If you've listened to the Grease soundtrack, you've probably heard him -- but this is all before he transitioned. Cid's been through quite a bit as well, and not just a rock and roll lifer, but also a survivor. And his recent memoir, TransElectric, Cidny talks about his journey from growing up in rural Massachusetts to New York to LA back to New York... and eventually Portland, Maine, and all the obstacles along the way: flying high In the music scene to his lows with struggling with addiction and losing his daughter and being in the closet as a trans person in the sixties and seventies without even really knowing what that meant or what the possibilities could be. Cidny complemented the memoir with Little Pieces and put it out in 2020. So you can guess what happened there. That's why Kill Rock Stars signed Cidny and reissued the album earlier this month. In this interview, Cindy and I talk about his life, intergenerational LGBTQ+ work, recording Little Pieces, and what's next for him. Purchase your copy of Rainbow Rodeo right here! Guess who finally decided to return with a new episode? To be fair, we have no real good excuse...except LIFE!In that vein, what a thrill it is to be alive when you're speaking with someone like Cidny Bullens, and going through selected bits of the incredible adventure that has been his life. His career has seen him sharing the stage with Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart -- and even Bob Dylan, just to name a few from his extensive highlight reel. He takes stock of his life and the journey that it has led him on with his memoir, Trans Electric: My Life As a Cosmic Rock Star.Beyond the key career moments that he details in his book, Cidny also reveals his own healing process and how he ultimately found himself and transitioned from female to male ten years ago. Going through the process, he found unexpected love, becoming a stepfather and a grandfather. Happily, he also discovered his true voice and true power as a performer. We really enjoyed speaking with Cid and getting to go inside his experiences both past and present. He continues to work tirelessly on new music and recently put out Little Pieces, his latest album via Kill Rock Stars. Look also for a forthcoming collaboration with Lucinda Williams, where he'll revisit one of his own songs for a new single that's expected to be released in 2024.For more about Cidny Bullens, we highly recommend reading David Browne's excellent profile which recently ran at Rolling Stone. And of course, for goodness sake, don't miss the book. You won't be able to put it down. Our thanks to our dear comrade Angie for helping to make this conversation happen. Kudos!
On today's episode, I talk to musician Marnie Stern. Originally from New York City, Marnie didn't start out trying to pursue music professionally, and her first album In Advance of the Broken Arm came out in 2007 on Kill Rock Stars when she was 30-years-old. It instantly garnered acclaim, and was followed by This Is It and I Am It and You Are It and So Is That and He Is It and She Is It and It Is It and That Is That in 2008, a self-titled album two years later and The Chronicles of Marnia in 2013. The previous year, she made Spin Magazine's list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of all Time", and after Seth Meyers took over Late Night, Marnie eventually joined the 8G Band for a number of years. Most recently, Marnie has recorded her first album in ten years; The Comeback Kid is out now on Joyful Noise, and it's fantastic! Jenny Pulse is a visual artist, singer, songwriter and one half of the collaborative duo, Tim Kinsella and Jenny Pulse. They're newest release, Giddy Skelter (out now via Kill Rock Stars), is a multi-textured collage of live instrumentation, samples, electro beats and experimental hooks. The recording is accompanied by a beautifully written zine titled Giddy Skelter : A Case Study. How to Make The Album You're Trying To Make, which functions as an illustration and manual to the process of making the record. In this episode Jenny shares how a karaoke rig and an old synthesizer were the gateway to her learning composition and arrangement. She tells us how the accompanying zine is a document of a new process of making a recording, how trips to the art institute influenced their song evolution and why she prefers mixing in a studio. The two discuss why untethering from the computer is a cure for the CPU blues, why band names make you feel like a teenager, and we hear a couple tunes. Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with Solange Igoa and Andrea Walker of the band Glitterfox! The duo first met at a coffee house open mic in Long Beach, California, where Walker had recently relocated after growing up in North Carolina and Virginia. She quickly fell in love with Igoa's voice, knowing that if their vocals and her guitar came together that would only flourish—and it did, the two now married and having spent more than a decade as a pair. Musically, channeling Walker's Southern warmth through Southern California indie shine, Glitterfox carves out lithe, nostalgia-fueled anthems powered by the intimacy of their relationship. “A lot of our songs are about serious challenges in our lives,” Walker says. “All the struggles in my life get poured into the music, but always with this silver lining of hope, this drive not to quit before the miracle happens. Making a living as an independent musician is hard, but we've always had each other and always made it work.” Igoa and Walker quickly found new roots when they moved out of their van and settled down in Portland, Oregon, in 2018, quickly cementing a reputation for their boundless energy and positivity. Soon they were joined by Eric Stalker, a singer-songwriter who got along with the couple so well that he volunteered to learn bass as a way to join their band. Drummer Blaine Heinonen followed, the quartet now capable of producing grander leaps of musical gravity to crash through the couple's golden-hued compositions. The group's soaring intimacy quickly won over Pacific Northwest fans and heroes in addition to Funk, with Kill Rock Stars label head Slim Moon who jumped at the opportunity to sign them. Despite that rapid growth, the beating heart of Glitterfox will always be Walker and Igoa's love. “Having a band that's built around a healthy marriage is cool because it has longevity. This week's guest, writer/DJ/Tech dude Corey duBrowa, brings some deep personal insight to this episode focusing on Elliott Smith and his amazing 1997 record: 'Either/Or'. This is the season eight premiere of Low Profile! This season is gonna be coming at you every Friday for the next couple of months, and it's all pretty fresh stuff. Right now we are in the middle of Scherler Sundays, a weekly concert and interview series hosted by 3 Magnets Brewing in downtown Olympia. If you're in the area, it'd be great to see you there, every Sunday at 3pm through August 13th. This is the first one, recorded on June 18th 2023. First up is a puppet theater troupe from Arcata, CA called the Kinetic Paranormal Society. Unfortunately, there were some technical difficulties with the recording of their performance and it just didn't turn out, but we did manage to get a good recording of my interview with Bartleby, one of the puppets. You can hear their scripted podcast wherever you're hearing this, just look for the Kinetic Paranormal Society podcast. After that, it's a performance from Your Heart Breaks, the long term project of musician, filmmaker and visual artist Clyde Peterson. We'll be talking about his new documentary about the band Earth, and his new Your Heart Breaks album “The Wrack Line” out now on Kill Rock Stars records. Finally, a set from our friends Elf Power, who drove out west from Athens, GA to play a show in the rain. Vocalist/guitarist Andrew Rieger catches up with Markly at the end of it all.

I am feeling #blessed and #grateful to be sharing today's interview with our listeners. Brian Dunne is one of my dearest pals in the music biz, not to mention one of my favorite songwriters working today. Brian's songs are always clever and sincere, dark and fun, honest and imaginative. He's got a way with words, a killer voice, and big time rock star vibes. These are a few of the reasons why “Loser On The Ropes,” Dunne's Kill Rock Stars debut, is earning this indie rocker critical acclaim and a ton of new fans.Brian is a New York-born artist who knew he wanted to be a musician from the first moment he saw Bruce Springsteen on television. After graduating from Berklee College of Music, Brian started making records and figuring out his sound. He's become a stalwart in the New York music scene both with his own music and as a member of the super-silly supergroup Fantastic Cat [shoutout to bandmate and Basic Folk alum Anthony D'Amato!].In 2022, Brian got word that a live recording of his song “New Tattoo,” which had been recorded during a 2018 soundcheck, was climbing the charts in the Netherlands. His unexpected European star turn has not gone to this working artist's head one bit; in fact he has delved even deeper into themes of failure and humility in his recent songs. But what keeps people coming back to Brian's music is his hopeful spirit in spite of all the darkness.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the singer and songwriter from a legendary ‘90s (and beyond) band alongside a relative newcomer whose songs he deeply influenced: Adam Duritz and Sean Barna. If you don't know his name, you certainly know Duritz's band, Counting Crows. Active since 1991, the group has sold 20 million albums, enjoyed a bunch of big hits, and been a powerhouse touring act for that entire run. To his great credit, Duritz—as you'll hear in this chat—has never stopped engaging with new music, both as a songwriter and a sort of talent scout. He started two different festivals that you'll hear about, the Outlaw Roadshow and Underwater Sunshine, which are built like jam sessions for both established and up-and-coming songwriters. Counting Crows continues to release new music, too, including a lengthy EP called Butter Miracle, Suite One, which was recorded during pandemic times and showcases a slightly glammier side of the band. Check out “Elevator Boots” right here, and check out Counting Crows on tour this summer with Dashboard Confessional. Today's other guest, Sean Barna, was a drummer who was directly inspired to start writing songs after hearing Counting Crows. In some sort of amazing bit of serendipity, Barna found himself in Duritz's orbit, and the two became fast friends and, eventually, guests on each other's music. Barna recently signed to the venerated indie label Kill Rock Stars, which just released his second album, An Evening at Macri Park, which is a sort of concept album about modern-day queer life in Brooklyn. It's emotional and catchy in all the right ways. Check out the song “Be a Man,” which features Duritz on guest vocals. In this fun and wide-ranging conversation, Duritz and Barna talk about playing shows together, the perfection that is a BLT, a bit of hazing that happened when Barna opened for Counting Crows, and lots more. There's even a lengthy story from Duritz that starts with badly injuring his leg and ends with him looking for his underwear. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Adam Duritz and Sean Barna for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
Seán Barna is a singer, songwriter and has been playing drums professionally since he was 14, cutting his teeth in Floridian honky-tonks and eventually graduating to the touring broadway production of The Producers. Seán's interests have since turned to a more up front position, taking on both singing and writing for his solo efforts which has led him to recording 3 records and touring the world for the past several years. His newest effort , An Evening at Macri Park — "a character study of the dimly-lit Brooklyn queer bar, Macri Park, and the creatures who thrive within its walls" is also a celebration of protest, the social energy of folk music and lush production. In this episode, Seán shares his early life as a professional drummer, what led to theater and stage production work, and how meeting Adam Duritz from Counting Crows change his career trajectory. Joe and Seán discuss the catalyst and process behind An Evening at Macri Park and the two drummers of course..... talk drums. We learn what a gay cactus looks like and hear a few tunes. On today's episode, I talk to musician Satomi Matsuzaki. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Satomi moved to San Francisco in 1995 to study film production, but within a week of immigrating, she joined the nascent rock group Deerhoof, and has been a member ever since. In the intervening years, the band has released over two dozen albums, EPs and live albums on labels like Kill Rock Stars and Polyvinyl, among many others, and their latest, Miracle-Level, was released at the end of March on Joyful Noise Recordings, and like everything they do, it's great! Big Joanie - In My Arms from the 2022 album Back Home on Kill Rock Stars. British punk trio and International Clash Day alums Big Joanie are releasing this sophomore record Back Home on November 4th via Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz's Daydream Library Series (UK) and Kill Rock Stars in the US. Ahead of its release, they've dropped a string of singles including “Happier Still” and our Song of the Day, “In My Arms.” Led by a rambling guitar, the nostalgic track looks back on a past relationship with regret and melancholy. “I've compromised too many times /In my life,” sings Stephanie Phillips. “One day I'll make the great escape /And send another you away /But now I dream /Of you in my arms.” Frontwoman Stephanie Phillips said this of the song in a statement: “At this point I was getting tired of living in London and dreaming about another life. It's about knowing you should go another way in life but you end up dreaming about the road you've already travelled down even though you know it won't take you where you need to go.” On the flip side, the Lydia Garret-directed video for the track is joyful in celebrating queer love and friendships. Focusing on a group of teens over the course of an exhilarating day where they explore a theme park, have a bonfire on the beach, and finish off with a personal dance party with Big Joanie as the entertainment. Slang - Chipped Tooth from the 2022 album Cockroach In A Ghost Town on Kill Rock Stars. In one of the most ultimate Northwest powergroup collaborations to come in recent history, Slang seemingly appeared out of nowhere. In fact, Drew Grow and Janet Weiss (the latter needing no introduction and Grow being a IYKYK frontman of Modern Kin and the Pastors' Wives and in-demand producer) have been slowly working on Slang for over a decade. Bringing with them a bevy of notable names for their first record Cockroach In a Ghost Town, including Kathy Foster (Roseblood, The Thermals) on bass and Anita Lee Elliot (Viva Voce) as well as appearances from Sam Coomes (Quasi), Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), and Mary Timony (Helium, Ex Hex, Wild Flag), it's a who's who of the Northwest Gen X scene. Our Song of the Day, “Chipped Tooth,” is an existentialist viewpoint of examining all the rough edges of yourself - be it your ragged brain, running wild with thoughts that slip into darkness quicker than you'd like, or the jagged points of a chipped tooth - always existing but not always noticeable until it's the only part of you that you can think about. “I think it's more our mutual appreciation of music that grabs you and grabs hold and shakes you to the core,” explained Weiss to KEXP's Eva Walker during their in-studio recorded in July. “I think we feel like this band has that potential to kind of get inside a person a give them strength and hope and just a joie de vive. Things get really hard and I feel like music is our saving grace so we all kind of look to music to lift us up.” Watch said in-studio and read the full post at KEXP.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
