This week, Matthew Sargent is back to talk about 2021's dark fantasy tale, The Green Knight. It's an adaptation of the poem of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, written and direted by David Lowery. It stars Dev Patel as Gawain, with Alicia Vikander in dual roles, Joel Edgerton, and Ralph Ineson. So, is this a visual feast, or pretentious and overly confusing? I saw bassist Victor Krummenacher, one of my favorite music people, perform twice within three weeks last fall: with Camper Van Beethoven to end perhaps their last-ever tour in Washington, D.C.; and with the Third Mind, the improvisatory band also featuring Dave Alvin, in Milwaukee. Both shows were fantastic. Now Krummenacher has a new album, the cinematic Block Out the Sun, and is reflecting on the inevitable artistic collision between one's personal life and what's happening in the outside world. He also discusses an upcoming album collaboration between most of the Third Mind and former Fairport Convention singer (and Caropop guest) Iain Matthews; the recently announced Record Store Day release of Camper Van Beethoven's version of Fleetwood Mac's Tusk; Krummenacher's vision of a possible Camper future; and that David Lowery song that quotes something hostile that Krummenacher allegedly said to the Camper frontman when the band was first breaking up. They explore the movie's haunting visuals, symbolic storytelling, and Dev Patel's compelling performance as Sir Gawain. The discussion unpacks the film's themes of honor, mortality, and self-discovery, while debating whether its slow, dreamlike pacing enhances or hinders the experience. It's a reflective episode that invites listeners to reconsider what bravery and heroism truly mean in one of modern cinema's most intriguing Arthurian adaptations.   Music: https://jessejacethomas.bandcamp.com/album/want Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastr

David Lowery is a paranormal investigator and experiencer best known as The Paranormal Highway Man, a title drawn from his extensive research into strange and often unsettling encounters reported along remote highways and backroads. Lowery explores cases involving shadow beings, cryptid sightings, UFO encounters, time slips, and interdimensional phenomena, many of which are linked to liminal travel spaces where reality appears to blur. Combining firsthand experiences, eyewitness reports, and investigative analysis, his work highlights highways as modern corridors of the unexplained—places where travelers encounter phenomena that challenge conventional understanding of space, time, and consciousness.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. THE GREEN KNIGHT (2021) is often described as abstract, slow, or confusing, but those labels miss what the film is actually doing. Directed by David Lowery, this Arthurian adaptation isn't a puzzle to be solved, but a moral fable about avoidance and the cost of refusing to grow up. In this episode of Four Play, Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin break down why The Green Knight is less concerned with symbolism and mythology than it is with character. Gawain's journey isn't about heroism, it's about procrastination, self-deception, and the terrifying moment when excuses run out.   Rather than presenting a traditional fantasy quest, the film strips the genre down to its emotional core. Each encounter tests Gawain not with strength or cleverness, but with honesty and courage, which are virtues he repeatedly fails to embody until the moment that finally matters. Raycon's Essential Open Earbuds are here to help you crush your new year goals! “Merry Christmas, Emily” David Lowery does so many things, his CV needs a sequel. He's a professor, a mathematician, a writer, a musician, a producer and an entrepreneur. He's also the singer of two of my all-time favorite bands: Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven. Let's start with the former. Lowery formed Camper Van Beethoven when he was a student at UC Santa Cruz in the early '80s. I was so obsessed with Camper Van when I was in high school I cut class to buy their new album--but I had the wrong day, so I cut class the next day to get it. Totally worth it, by the way. Camper Van Beethoven put out a handful of genius albums likeOur Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart and Telephone Free Landslide Victory before temporarily disbanding in 1990. Lowery didn't miss a beat and formed Cracker with guitarist Johnny Hickman and they put out a handful of genius albums like Kerosene Hat and The Golden Age, logged a #1 Modern Rock track with "Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now)" and scored three platinum albums. This is only a partial history, by the way; but I would recommend reading up on both bands because they have fascinating histories.Lowery has produced everyone from Counting Crows to Sparklehorse, founded Sound of Music studios, was a seed investor in Reverb.com (), knocked out his PhD and was named a Global IP Champion by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. A ferocious advocate for artist's rights, among other things, Lowery launched a pair of class actions alleging major streaming services had failed to properly license and account to independent songwriters. Lowery currently teaches the economics and finance of the music business at the University of Georgia. An authentic career-spanning collection that boasts re-recordings, demos, b-sides and live takes that have never been heard, ‘Alternative History: A Cracker Retrospective' is out now. It's a deep and privileged dive into the rich and vast Cracker cataloge and to say it's a treat falls short of the mark. It's a musical treasure chest. Cracker are touring now and will be on the road at the beginning of 2025 and Camper Van will be playing dates as well. www.crackersoul.com Www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com IG: @Emberspodcast editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

THE OLD MAN & THE GUN (2018) feels less like a typical crime movie and more like a gentle farewell  not just to a character, but to an entire Hollywood era. Directed by David Lowery, the film stars Robert Redford as Forrest Tucker, a lifelong bank robber whose crimes are defined not by violence, but by charm, politeness, and an irresistible love of the game.   As the final entry in our Robert Redford Arc, this episode explores why THE OLD MAN & THE GUN works as a perfect swan song. The film distills everything that made Redford an icon: effortless charisma, moral ambiguity, romanticism without sentimentality, and a deep understanding of aging, obsession, and identity. What emerges is a crime story with almost no tension  and yet carries enormous emotional weight.   Lowery shoots the film on Super 16mm, giving it the texture and warmth of a 1970s classic, while Redford delivers one of his most restrained and expressive performances. Paired with a beautifully understated turn from Sissy Spacek, and supported by a stacked cast that includes Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, and Tom Waits, the film becomes a meditation on what it means to keep doing the thing you love even when the world tells you it's time to stop.   Visit https://prizepicks.onelink.me/LME0/FOURPLAY and use code FOURPLAY and get $50 in lineups when you play your first $5 lineup! Turn your expensive wireless present into a huge wireless savings future by switching to Mint. A band doesn't thrive for thirty plus years by accident. Guitarist/Singer and cofounder Johnny Hickman opens up about the simple pact that kept Cracker alive—stay the course, skip the drama, and serve the song. We dig into how he and David Lowery decide who sings what, which ideas belong to Cracker versus solo projects, and how rotating players and richer arrangements kept the sound evolving without losing its soul.Johnny shares the heart of their identity as a conversation between his signature riffs and David's singular voice, a push-pull that lets them morph styles while staying unmistakably Cracker. From the pressure to follow Kerosene Hat with more of the same to choosing strings, keys, and pedal steel instead, he explains how ignoring trends led to a fan favorite. We swap notes on Tom Petty and Mike Campbell's riff-to-song alchemy, why Boys of Summer proves genre lines are flimsy, and how great songs outlast scenes and labels.Community threads through everything: Camp In and Camp Out's curated nights and those joyous, glitchy “Live from the Cave” streams that carried fans through lockdown. After Camper Van Beethoven performed the final show of its recent tour in Washington, D.C.—and perhaps its last show ever—violinist/multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Segel returned to Stockholm, Sweden, where he has lived for the past 13 years. Segel is well traveled as a musician and otherwise, having been born in Marseille, France, grown up in Davis, Calif., and played with Sparklehorse as well as the Øresund Space Collective and on solo projects. He was a key element, if not the sparkplug, in the classic Camper Van Beethoven lineup until, he says, frontman David Lowery dismissed him before the band recorded Key Lime Pie and then broke up altogether. Segel recalls how he found his place in a band that would shift from ska to klezmer music to crunching rock within a few measures. He describes the band's rise, his departure, how he and Lowery patched things up and whether the far-flung bandmates might record or perform together again. (Photo by Bengt Alm)

Your Political Beats hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) get the opportunity to spend a little more time with singer/songwriter/bandleader/advocate/professor David Lowery (@DavidCLowery)Now-frequent (two times is frequent, right?) Political Beats guest David Lowery returns to the show to talk about his magnificent new solo record Fathers, Sons and Brothers. For those unaware, David is the founder of Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker as well as a long-time advocate for artists' rights. He also serves as Senior Lecturer in Music Business at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. David previously joined us for more than three hours to discuss the music created by both of his bands -- the original version is here and the remastered version (higher audio quality and additional song clips) is right here -- so we don't spend time at all reviewing that content. The new album is good enough that it deserves its own place in the sun.As David himself describes Fathers, Sons and Brothers, "In lieu of an uninteresting written autobiography I've made this record. I do this not so much to tell my own story but to pay tribute to my mother, father, sisters, extended family, friends, and those who have shared their lives with me." It tells the story of his life, career, and loved ones. The songs are deeply affecting and carry a somewhat unexpected emotional heft. The closing kick -- "Vending Machine," '"Fathers, Sons, and Brothers," "Yonder Distant Shore," "Darken Your Door," "Giving Tree Father" -- is just one gut punch after another when you realize the stories being told. It's all just further evidence that Lowery is peerless among his generation's songwriters and deserves even more acclaim than he has received.During this conversation, we spend time trying to define the sound of the new record (we suggest an extension of Gram Parsons's "Cosmic American Music" idea), the backstories behind a few of the songs, how the album's narrative took shape and propels the record forward, and where he finds his joy these days in performing live music. There's even a question about religion buried in here.If you love CVB, you'll love this album. If you love Cracker, you'll love this album. If you love Political Beats, well, we're pretty sure you'll love this album. Many of the songs are cinematic in their scope; you literally can picture these scenes playing out in your mind. These tracks are elevated by spending time with the lyric sheet and appreciating the nuances and care taken in the storytelling. Be sure to check out David and Cracker (full band and solo dates) live through the rest of the summer. He indicated a more extensive slate of dates supporting Fathers, Sons and Brothers could be on the way this fall. If you're out and about, you might see Scot at any Detroit-area show and Jeff at any Chicago-area shows. These songs certainly deserve to be seen live.

David Lowery is looking back while pushing forward. The brainy, witty Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker frontman just released a two-CD, three-LP solo album, Fathers, Sons and Brothers, that's a sort of musical memoir. Here he tells stories about those stories, reflecting on the recent Camper shows to mark the debut album's 40th anniversary and speculating on whether the band would have had its career if he hadn't written “Take the Skinheads Bowling.” He also discusses the almost accidental ways in which Cracker's “Low” and “Eurotrash Girl” became hits, tells whether he's surprised by which of his songs have had legs, ponders whether he and his bands appreciated the good times, notes his preference of his new album on CD or vinyl, asserts how record companies blew it with streaming, shares new song ideas and weighs the economics of recording them with Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker or on his own. David Lowery has cracked the code for having it all. In the 80s he fronted the beloved Camper Van Beethoven who rose to (indie) fame with "Take the Skinheads Bowling" and "Pictures of Matchstick Men" and sounding like no one else at the time. Then, when they broke up in the early 90s, he started Cracker which was even more successful commercially with huge hits like "Low" and "Get Off This". Eventually, he found a way to merge the two into a single touring unit which is completely unique to them. Along the way, David has released a solo album or two, including his latest magnum opus - Fathers, Sons and Brothers - a 28-track audio autobiography of sorts. Oh, and he teaches at the University of Georgia. Who does this? No one. David joins us this week to discuss it all.  www.davidlowerymusic.com www.patreon.com/c/thehustlepod

For over four decades, David Lowery has been an innovator and thought leader in the music business. As musician, he's the founder and leader of both indie rock legends Camper Van Beethoven and the successful band Cracker. He's also a writer, producer, studio owner, educator, and as a champion of artists rights in the digital age he even led a successful $112 million dollar lawsuit against Spotify. His new album, *Fathers, Sons and Brothers*, is a sprawling 28 song release that he offers as an alternative to writing an autobiography. It is a beautiful collection of deeply personal and often quite funny stories that span his history from childhood and family, to the origin stories of Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker, to relationships and more.  Geoff Stanfield caught up with David to chat about this new record, being a studio owner, producing, and his thoughts on record labels, digital technology and copyright, quantitative finance, and more! Enjoy.

An unexpected music miracle unfolded in Athens, Georgia when all four original members of REM reunited on stage during a Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy tribute performance celebrating the 40th anniversary of "Fables of the Reconstruction." This rare convergence became the highlight of a music-packed fortnight in Athens, GA that I'm thrilled to share with you in vivid detail. The magic moment happened at the legendary 40 Watt Club when Michael Stipe took the microphone, joining Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Bill Berry for a performance of "Pretty Persuasion." As someone witnessing this unicorn of rock reunions, I found myself torn between capturing the moment on my phone and simply absorbing the once-in-a-lifetime experience with my own eyes.My Athens immersion continued with visits to iconic landmarks like the Murmur Trestle and Weaver D's (of "Automatic for the People" fame), followed by four days at Cracker's annual "Camp in" event. This gathering of devoted fans—affectionately called "Crumbs"—featured intimate performances ranging from David Lowery and Johnny Hickman's acoustic sets to full-band experiences. A particularly moving moment was Ike Reilly's performances featuring his adult children, weaving themes of redemption and musical legacy. We dive into musical history with explorations of Depeche Mode's "Violator" album and its transformative impact on their fanbase in 1990, plus Mike Watt's collaborative 1995 album featuring members of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters. "Minute with Jimmy" spotlights The Vapors' surprising return with a new album 45 years after their hit "Turning Japanese," proving great music transcends time.Whether you're a devoted fan of Athens' storied music scene or simply love discovering musical connections across generations, this episode captures those special moments when music history unfolds before your eyes—and why sharing these experiences matters now more than ever.Send us a one-way message.

I don't know how well the show is doing, but I do want another season, even though I have no idea how that would go. Well, is it safe to come out of hiding? The poor kids get to find out their school on At-Attin has missed some galactic sized events.Jude Law is very solid as the adult lead. After that, we'll delve into the mystical and mysterious world of The Green Knight and switch gears for some light-hearted adventures with Mike the Knight.Top 5 Knights in Film and Television:Sir Lancelot in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975) - This comedic take on the legendary knight mixes absurdity with classic Arthurian elements, making Sir Lancelot both heroic and hilariously oblivious.Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" series - While not a knight in the traditional sense, Aragorn embodies the knightly virtues of bravery, loyalty, and leadership, playing a crucial role in Middle-earth's battles against evil.Sir William Thatcher in "A Knight's Tale" (2001) - Portrayed by Heath Ledger, Sir William's journey from peasant to pseudo-knight captures the spirit of chivalry and the pursuit of honor and recognition within the rigid class systems of medieval society. The Black Knight in "Excalibur" (1981) - A mysterious and formidable figure, the Black Knight in this retelling of the Arthurian legends represents the darker aspects of knighthood and chivalry, providing a stark contrast to more idealistic portrayals.Brienne of Tarth in "Game of Thrones" (TV Series) - Brienne challenges traditional gender roles within the knightly order, proving herself through unmatched bravery and a firm moral compass, making her one of the most respected and memorable knights in modern television. The Green Knight (2021) Directed by David Lowery, The Green Knight presents a visually stunning and thematically rich adaptation of the Arthurian legend, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." The film follows Gawain, played by Dev Patel, on a perilous quest that explores themes of honor, bravery, and the nature of true heroism. The movie's slow-burning narrative and atmospheric tension set it apart from traditional knightly tales, offering a fresh take on the complexities of personal growth and virtue.Switching to a much lighter tone, Mike the Knight is a delightful animated series that introduces younger audiences to a fantastical medieval world. Mike, a young knight-in-training, embarks on adventures that teach him about responsibility, problem-solving, and the importance of being kind. It's a great way to introduce the concepts of knighthood and chivalry to kids in an engaging and educational manner.Whether you're in the mood for a profound cinematic experience with The Green Knight or looking for family-friendly fun with Mike the Knight, today's episode promises a thrilling exploration of what it means to be a knight in both lore and life.
