Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz explains how his songwriting process has changed over the years, and offers insights into some of his songs, from early classics to recent compositions. PART ONE:Paul and Scott discuss judging a book by its cover and their possible status as idiots. PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Adam DuritzABOUT ADAM DURITZ:Songwriter Adam Duritz is best known as the lead singer of Counting Crows, which formed in 1991 in the San Francisco Bay area. Their 1993 debut album, August and Everything After, which was produced by T. Bone Burnett, attracted attention for songs such as “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here,” and “Rain King.” The album earned the group two Grammy nominations and was certified seven-times platinum. The double platinum follow-up album, Recovering the Satellites, reached number one and produced the top 10 pop single “A Long December.” Subsequent #1 singles on Billboard's AAA chart include “American Girls” with Sheryl Crow, “She Don't Want Nobody Near,” “Accidentally in Love” from Shrek 2 (which earned them an Academy Award nomination), and “You Can't Count on Me” and “Come Around” from the band's fifth album, Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings. In 2021 Counting Crows reached #2 on the AAA chart with “Elevator Boots” from their EP Butter Miracle, Suite One. Their eighth studio album, Butter Miracle, The Complete Sweets!, will be released this Friday, May 9. You'll hear clips of some of the new songs during our conversation, but to hear others Adam discusses, such as “With Love, From A-Z” and “Boxcars,” you'll have to wait a few days for the new album. In all, the band has sold over 20 million albums and established themselves as vibrant live performers who often put a fresh spin on the recorded versions of their classic songs.
On Episode #92 of “Sound Up!,” Mark Goodman and Alan Light welcome Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, to talk about the band's new album “Butter Miracle: The Complete Sweets.” Mark reviews Alison Moyet in concert, and Alan has a recap of a Nick Cave & the Bad seeds show (in Ohio). In music news, R.E.M. release a new benefit EP, and once again, we lost two great artists this week—Jill Sobule and Mike Peters of the Alarm, a longtime friend of producer Roger Coletti, who offers his remembrances. Our new music picks this week include songs from Lucius, Car Seat Headrest, The Beths, and Kacey Musgraves. We want to make you part of the conversation. As the train rolls by like our conscious lives. I can kinda swallow and breathe again and Ibuprofen is starting to put a dent in it. Even the Daily show says they made Covid in a Chinese lab now. Joe Rogan was right all along? I don't mean to hop on a trend. I don't need to see Adam Duritz stirring up a glaze in a bowl and talking about it. The ravages of time. You're looking at something that does not exist anymore. It's not there. It's gone. A conscious social break slash detox. Everything that's old has become new again. The human experience is a quite diverse quilt of sparkling madness and sadness. President Trump is back and the golden age of America has most definitely begun. We gotta stay and fight for it. The storms of outrage and fury and anger blow right by. Rosie O'Donnell is a coward.

When Vinyl Emergency podcaster Jim Hanke was in school at UW Milwaukee with a double major in Communications and Journalism, he probably never dreamed that one of his future endeavors would be an answer to a question on the famous game show Jeopary. But that's what happened with Biscuits and Jam, a podcast he was producing for Southern Living Magazine. He spent a couple of crucial years there and helped to transform that show into a Jeopardy-answer-sized-pod, but only after producing his own beloved pod called Vinyl Emergency. This podcast has been a labor of love over the past 5 years and has grown from interviewing nobody's like Allen Epley to rapping with somebody's like Adam Duritz from Counting Crows, Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Chris Shifflet of Foo Fighters about what vinyl has meant to them. Jim has moved from Southen Living on to the Audacy company where he now produces many shows for them in addition to VE still going strong, and raising a beautiful family in the Chicago burbs.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the singer and songwriter from a legendary ‘90s (and beyond) band alongside a relative newcomer whose songs he deeply influenced: Adam Duritz and Sean Barna. If you don't know his name, you certainly know Duritz's band, Counting Crows. Active since 1991, the group has sold 20 million albums, enjoyed a bunch of big hits, and been a powerhouse touring act for that entire run. To his great credit, Duritz—as you'll hear in this chat—has never stopped engaging with new music, both as a songwriter and a sort of talent scout. He started two different festivals that you'll hear about, the Outlaw Roadshow and Underwater Sunshine, which are built like jam sessions for both established and up-and-coming songwriters. Counting Crows continues to release new music, too, including a lengthy EP called Butter Miracle, Suite One, which was recorded during pandemic times and showcases a slightly glammier side of the band. Check out “Elevator Boots” right here, and check out Counting Crows on tour this summer with Dashboard Confessional. Today's other guest, Sean Barna, was a drummer who was directly inspired to start writing songs after hearing Counting Crows. In some sort of amazing bit of serendipity, Barna found himself in Duritz's orbit, and the two became fast friends and, eventually, guests on each other's music. Barna recently signed to the venerated indie label Kill Rock Stars, which just released his second album, An Evening at Macri Park, which is a sort of concept album about modern-day queer life in Brooklyn. It's emotional and catchy in all the right ways. Check out the song “Be a Man,” which features Duritz on guest vocals. In this fun and wide-ranging conversation, Duritz and Barna talk about playing shows together, the perfection that is a BLT, a bit of hazing that happened when Barna opened for Counting Crows, and lots more. There's even a lengthy story from Duritz that starts with badly injuring his leg and ends with him looking for his underwear. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Adam Duritz and Sean Barna for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!

Prior to releasing some of the most memorable songs to come out of the 90's, San Francisco's Counting Crows were subject to a major-label bidding war, thanks in part to something rather unheard of in the industry: a massive, 15-song demo tape. Not only did this show a deep well for vocalist and lead songwriter Adam Duritz to pull from, but this prototype already came with early versions of future bonafide hits like "Mr. Jones" and "Round Here." To an alt-rock audience who didn't necessarily grow up with Van Morrison, The Band or R.E.M., Adam and company filled that void and then some, with their first three albums selling over 10 million copies between them. Today, Adam spills why their upcoming co-headlining tour with Dashboard Confessional has been 20 years in the making, which records he spun every morning while recording the band's landmark debut album August and Everything After, and how that title track (which never made the original 1993 release) is now finally available, specifically for vinyl lovers. Counting Crows' latest -- Butter Miracle: Suite One -- is available wherever you find music. Visit countingcrows.com for live dates, socials and more.
The lead singer of Counting Crows, Adam Duritz (@CountingCrows) talked to Bobby about how he discovered he was a good singer and started a band at 13 but didn't write his first song until he was a freshman in college. He shared how songwriting took over his life so much that it affected his schoolwork and when he was one credit away from graduating college and didn't care to get his degree. He also talked about the years he spent struggling to make it in music that led him to go to Europe and quit for a little while. Adam also recalled what inspired their song "Mr. Jones" and how after they performed it on SNL their careers blew up and he started to get mobbed at places. Adam is very passionate about music and shared how he got asked to create a song for the 'Shrek' movie called "Accidentally In Love," and why he was so excited to have a song in an animated movie, and more! Seán's interests have since turned to a more up front position, taking on both singing and writing for his solo efforts which has led him to recording 3 records and touring the world for the past several years. His newest effort , An Evening at Macri Park — "a character study of the dimly-lit Brooklyn queer bar, Macri Park, and the creatures who thrive within its walls" is also a celebration of protest, the social energy of folk music and lush production. In this episode, Seán shares his early life as a professional drummer, what led to theater and stage production work, and how meeting Adam Duritz from Counting Crows change his career trajectory. Joe and Seán discuss the catalyst and process behind An Evening at Macri Park and the two drummers of course..... talk drums. We learn what a gay cactus looks like and hear a few tunes. An Evening at Macri Park will be released May 12th on Kill Rock Stars. https://seanbarna.bandcamp.com/album/an-evening-at-macri-park https://www.dangeroussounds.com/ https://killrockstars.com/ This ep is supported Native Instruments. We got the band back together and we are heading to Riverdale to discuss Josie and the Pussycats from Archie Comics. We cover a brief history of Archie Comics and Josie, the band's first appearance in the 1960s, the 2016 reboot, their role on Riverdale and especially the 2001 film which is much more satirical and meta you might remember. Plus Rob discusses his experience working on the Archie Comics Musical! We are joined by resident Josie expert and superfan Ethan from MakeMineAmalgam who literally watched the film every day for a year. Ep. 95 What if Josie and the Pussycats saved the world from being destroyed by teenagers turned into capitalist zombies? With Special Guest Ethan of MakeMineAmalgamEarth of an unknown designation as seen in the Josie & The Pussycats (2001) FilmWe take our first trip to Riverdale to cover everyone's favorite all girl band, Josie and the Pussycats! We share a quick background on Archie Comics and Josie co-creator Dan DiCarlo and how it is still a family business. Rob shares his experience working on the Archie Broadway Musical and how he played a small role in bringing current Archie mastermind Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa into Riverdale. We start off with early Josie in the 1960s before jumping ahead to discuss special guest Ethan from MakeMineAmalgam's favorite film, Josie and the Pussycats from 2001 starring Rachel Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Alan Cumming, Gabriel Mann, Paulo Costanzo, Missi Pyle and Parker Posey and written and directed by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan (plus the great soundtrack by Adam Schlesinger, Adam Duritz, Jane Wiedlin, Anna Waronker, Babyface and more). In the very meta and satirical film, Josie and the Pusscats find themselves part of a global conspiracy to brainwash teens and turn them into consumerist zombies! We head back to comics with Josie's short lived revival in 2016 by Marguerite Bennett, Cameron DeOrdio, and Audrey Mok. We wrap up with some mixed reactions to an episode of Riverdale (directed by Robin Givens) that sees the return of the Pussycats. We also chat while Alexandra Cabot is the true start of the Josie-verse and could we possibly one day see a return of the Rachel Leigh Cook led version of the band. Comedian and Jaguars fan Allen Strickland Williams joins Cullen and Joe to talk about Florida's most Florida team, ribs at the Jacksonville dog track and Adam Duritz. Not a ton to bet on this week, but bets are made with conviction (Chad Henne SB MVP). Joe lost $100 betting on a defensive tackle getting a TD, but he still thinks it was a good idea.

Happy Holidays. While we're on break, we'd love to share a preview of another podcast on the Talkhouse Podcast Network, Craig Finn's That's How I Remember It. This episode originally aired on Sept. 1, 2022, and is titled "Adam Duritz (Counting Crows)." Subscribe to That's How I Remember It. Adam Duritz is my guest on this week's That's How I Remember It and I am quite psyched about it. Adam is obviously the singer and songwriter of platinum selling band Counting Crows, and has been making thoughtful and great music for decades now. I met Adam when Counting Crows took THS on tour in Europe/UK in 2009 and was so excited he agreed to do this. We talked about how the details matter so much in songs, each of our first trips to Asbury Park, loving Christmas music, that dog., last year's fantastic Counting Crows EP, bootlegs, and the way that light attaches to a girl. That's a wrap on season one of That's How I Remember It; we'll be back with season two before long. Listen, subscribe, and keep your eye on this space for tour updates, etc. Stay Positive!
How long is it? Every single kid knows exactly how many days are left until Christmas, every harried mom and dad knows how few shopping days are left until the 25th, yet Adam Duritz and The Counting Crows are out here acting like Einsteinian physics applies to the Gregorian Calendar. Can our intrepid and unabashedly festive hosts take the most heartbreaking song in the advent oeuvre and turn it into something that will go on your family's Christmas Eve playlist? Seems impossible!
