In this “best of” episode, Cynthia reflects on Thanksgiving and tells the story about how she landed this big interview with author Maureen Sherry before we had published even a single episode of GOAL MAGIC. It’s a pretty cool story of having faith and reaching out. We hope you enjoy the backstory, and also the wonderful interview with Maureen Sherry! I am so excited to share an interview I recorded with bestselling author Maureen Sherry. I am a fan of Maureen's book, Opening Belle, which has been optioned to be a major motion picture set to star Reese Witherspoon. Opening Belle resonated with me for its honest yet funny take on sexism in American corporations, so I reached out to Maureen to express my gratitude for her book, which lead to this heartening interview. Maureen has had a fascinating life and career, going from high-flying banking executive to successful writer. She’s also a happy mom. In this interview, we talk about the ups and downs of being a female executive in Wall Street (and in corporate, in general), the sneaky way mega corporations hide sexism and scandals and the reason why her novel Opening Belle almost never saw the light of day. There are lots of takeaways from this episode, so you’ll definitely want to give it a listen. (Bloomberg)--Arthur Levitt, former chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, interviews Maureen Sherry, author of, “Opening Belle,” on "A Closer Look With Arthur Levitt."
When Susan Fowler, a former engineer at Uber, told Human resources she was being sexually harassed, the company did nothing about it, she said. When she discovered other women had reported being harassed by the same manager, HR still did nothing. Last week, in a viral blog post, Fowler painted a picture of a toxic work environment where management ignores bad behavior and punishes people like Fowler. Her story is not unique to Uber, or the technology industry. This week on Game Plan, Francesca and Rebecca dive into toxic workplaces, how people cope with them, and how they finally get out. Maureen Sherry, a former trader at Bear Stearns joins them to talk about the bro culture of Wall Street, where she endured sexual harassment for 12 years before finally getting fed up and leaving. (Correct spelling of Bear Stearns in final sentence.)
Maureen Sherry spent 12 years on Wall Street and became the youngest Managing Director at one of the biggest investment firms in the world. She navigated through the mortgage crisis and frat party, bro-culture environment while being a mother, wife and sole breadwinner in her family. She has stories to tell. Reese Witherspoon has optioned Maureen's book, Opening Belle, and is making a movie out of the book. The story is equal parts fascinating, comical, inspiring and shocking. Reese will play Maureen on the big screen. This tale is a powerful tool in helping women progress in the workplace. vv Show Notes: Maureen talks about spending 12 years on Wall Street as a young women navigating through a bro-culture. Maureen's Why Not Now? moment and why she decided to leave Wall Street. Advice for women. Why Maureen didn’t sign non-disclosure when she left her investment firm. How she keeps her mind healthy.
