Readiness is the ability to close with and destroy any enemy, anywhere, anytime. The role of the Sergeant Major of the Army is to ensure readiness. Command Sergeant Major Dan Dailey was the 15th Sergeant Major of the Army and the youngest Soldier to ever hold the position. Today, he is the Vice President of Noncommissioned Officer and Soldier Programs at the Association of the United States Army.SMA Dailey joined Creator and Host Fran Racioppi to define what it really means for the United States Army to be “ready” to fight and win our nation's wars. To do so, they went deep on each of the components of readiness, including: Manning and the impacts of the recruiting crisis the Army has endured over the past several years. Training and the importance of the Combat Training Centers and our combined exercises across the components and with our allies.Equipping for the next fight and why the current procurement processes must change if America expects to remain ahead in the innovation race.Leader Development including why softening the messaging of warfighting hurts mission focus and how the Army is closing the experience gap as the Global War on Terror generation of Soldiers retire. They also cover the important mission of the Association of the United States Army and how as the largest organization supporting our Soldiers their work only continues to grow. “The Evolution of U.S. Marine Corps Special Operations”: Insights from John DaileyJohn Dailey is a retired Marine Force Recon sniper and member of Detachment One, the first USMC unit in SOCOM. A veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, he now trains Marine Raiders and holds multiple master's degrees, including an MFA in creative writing. He is also the author of Tough Rugged Bastards. Over the course of his career, John played a pivotal role in shaping the Marine Corps' special operations capabilities, including the formation of the Marine Raiders. From his early days in Force Recon to deploying alongside Navy SEALs in Iraq, John's experience spans some of the most transformative moments in modern military history. In this episode, John shares a powerful insight that has shaped both his military career and his life beyond service:"When the mission changes, your mindset must change with it. Adaptability isn't just a skill; it's a survival tool.”This mindset defined John's ability to lead through shifting roles, new threats, and unexpected challenges. After 9/11, as the Marine Corps was tasked with creating a new special operations unit, John found himself at the forefront of this transformation. Working alongside Colonel Robert Coates, John helped form the Marine Corps' first special operations unit, which would later become the Marine Raiders. Their initial deployment alongside Navy SEALs in Iraq in 2004 marked a turning point for the Marine Corps' role in SOCOM and the wider special operations landscape.John's philosophy on leadership, adaptability, and teamwork is deeply rooted in his military experience. He emphasizes that even support roles — mechanics, medics, and administrative staff — were vital to mission success. "Everybody fights," John recalls. "That mindset kept us prepared for anything.”Mental Fortitude and Problem-Solving: The ability to navigate high-stress situations and solve problems under pressure is crucial in special operations. John's resilience and growth throughout his career serve as an inspiration for aspiring operators and veterans alike.Since retiring, John has continued to share his insights on leadership, resilience, and the importance of finding purpose after military service. His book, Tough Rugged Bastards, blends personal stories with actionable lessons for overcoming adversity and embracing change. For those navigating their own transitions — whether in the military, corporate world, or personal life — John's message is clear: adaptability, teamwork, and purpose are the cornerstones of success.John's remarkable journey, from the sands of Iraq to mentoring others through his writing, stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the enduring strength of the Marine Corps spirit. Why You Should Listen: This episode is a deep dive into the world of special operations, filled with historical context, personal stories, and valuable lessons. Whether you're a military enthusiast, a history buff, or someone looking for inspiration, John Daly's experiences and insights are sure to captivate you.
Today, I'm joined by John Dailey, and we're talking about Leading a Team of Tough Rugged Bastards. John spent over 20 years in the Marines, mostly in special operations. When the Twin Towers went down, Dailey was in Australia with his platoon. He knew immediately that things would never be the same. He was hand-picked to be a part of Detachment One (Det-1), the USMC's newly formed special operations command in the early days of the War on Terror. He is the author of Tough Rugged Bastards, where he tells the story of the creation, training, and volatile 2004 Iraq deployment of Task Unit Raider that led to the creation of the Marine Forces Special Operations Command. We're delighted to share with you a new series of podcasts that explore key themes and trends impacting the financial services industry throughout 2025. In today's episode Sierra Nicholson is joined by Eversheds Sutherland speakers, Renée Dailey and Ben Davis, to reflect on part 1 and provide additional insights into what is driving growth in the private placement market, the rise of new and innovative structures in transactions and how the addressable market for private credit might evolve in the year ahead.
Boston-bred singer-songwriter Will Dailey has a new record out called BOYS TALKING. Well, it's not “out” out. As in: It's not streaming on all the usual platforms — which means it's not available to be randomly and conveniently ignored. If you want to get Will's new record, all you have to do is… 1. Get out of the house. 2. Go to a club that's hosting one of his live performances. 3. Look him in the eye and purchase it from him. Simple, right? But in this world of complacent digital bubbles, this basic act of human connection feels like a clarion call of spiritual rebellion. And we at the LIFERS podcast are here for it. Join us for a deep (deep) conversation with Will about art, music, commerce, and being fucking ALIVE!!! Also: Gabe forgets that he already showered for the day.

John A. Dailey is a USMC MARSOC Instructor that's trained hundreds of Marine Raiders across his over 20 years in the military. An early Force Reconnaissance Sniper, John witnessed the 9/11 attacks from a pub in Australia before getting shipped out to Afghanistan to help kick off the War on Terror. Later, he'd serve alongside his fellow 'tough rugged bastards' as a team leader at Detachment-1 in 2004, hunting insurgents, bomb-makers, and other HVT's in what would lead to the formation of the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC). in 2008 he retired, taking a job that has him still training Raiders while penning his memoir 'Tough Rugged Bastards: A Memoir of a Life in Marine Special Operations'. So what did the Raiders originally look like back when John joined Detachment-1? How has MARSOC changed since then, and what's really the difference between Marine Raiders and SEAL Teams? And as the titular tough rugged bastard, do you have to be hard-wired to be a hard man, or can you learn to be truly tough? Let's ask John.
