Episode 357 of The VentureFizz Podcast features Brian Liu, serial entrepreneur and co-founder of companies like LegalZoom, BizCounsel, & Overture. Lots of the best ideas come from experience within your own industry and it was Brian and his co-founder, Brian Lee (who has since gone on to be a co-founder of ShoeDazzle and The Honest Company) who both had experience in the law industry and saw an industry which was ripe for disruption. After experimenting with some ideas, the idea for LegalZoom had the best validation for building a company and some of the most successful entrepreneurs take bold risks. For example, to bring validation for consumers about the legitimacy of their business for legal docs, they cold called and got Robert Shapiro (yes, the high profile attorney from the OJ Simpson trial) involved in the business… and from there, they were off and running… which ultimately led to a publicly traded company. His latest company is Overture, an attorney-to-attorney referral platform for solos & small firms. In this podcast, we cover: * A discussion about the impact and potential that AI has for the legal industry. * Brian's background story and his experience as a practicing attorney. * The full lifecycle story of LegalZoom, including the Robert Shapiro cold call and how they scaled the company. * All the details about Overture. * Brian's work as an advisor for entrepreneurs like Julia Rodgers from HelloPrenup, who was featured in Episode 336 of The VentureFizz Podcast. * And so much more.

I walk into a room, and I immediately don't want small talk, like I want to know what makes you tick. I want to know where you come from. It's very genuine. I think that because I do that, I've become a connector. In today's episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Stacy Bernstein, the co-founder and Chief Brand Officer of All Better Co., a company revolutionizing first aid with better, more sustainable products. Stacy shared a compelling origin story that all parents can relate to—finding safe and effective solutions for their children's everyday scrapes, bumps, and itchy skin. All Better Co. was born out of necessity when Stacy and her co-founder couldn't find safe alternatives to harsh chemicals for their kids. They created their first products, including the Don't Scratch That patch and pen, to address mosquito bites without the use of steroids. “We couldn't find it, so we went out and made it on our own,” Stacy explained. What's particularly exciting about All Better Co. is its commitment to sustainability. One of their standout products is the biodegradable Better Bandage, which eliminates the “forever chemicals” found in most bandages. “It's better for you, it's better for the environment, and it's better than 90% of the bandages on the market today,” Stacy told me.The company is currently raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign, giving everyday investors the chance to be part of their growth story. With plans to expand into major retailers and build a $400 million company, Stacy envisions All Better Co. becoming a household name, much like The Honest Company in the baby care space. If you're passionate about sustainability and innovation, All Better Co. is a company to watch—and perhaps invest in, as it grows and scales.tl;dr:* Stacy Bernstein co-founded All Better Co. out of a personal need for safer, more effective first aid products, starting with her Don't Scratch That mosquito patch and pen.* All Better Co. is addressing a stagnant first aid market by offering innovative, eco-friendly products, such as their biodegradable bandages, free from harmful "forever chemicals."* Stacy and her co-founder bootstrapped the company and are now raising capital through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign, inviting people to invest in their vision.* The company is expanding into retail, with a focus on natural grocers, and has already gained a foothold in over 50 retail locations.* Stacy emphasizes the importance of community and connection in both business and life, viewing these as integral to All Better Co.'s growth and crowdfunding success. How to Develop Authentic Connection As a SuperpowerStacy's superpower is the ability to create authentic connections with people, fostering a sense of community and support through meaningful interactions. Stacy describes how she walks into a room and immediately seeks genuine connection, bypassing small talk to learn what truly makes people tick. Her natural ability to build rapport allows her to become a connector, helping others find the right resources, people, or support systems. One story that illustrates Stacy's superpower is the creation of the Bearing All project during the COVID pandemic. Alongside her best friend, Stacy formed a community where people shared deeply personal stories about their family-building journeys, struggles with fertility, loss, adoption, and more. This project attracted over 100 essays from all over the world, providing a platform for vulnerable, authentic storytelling that connected people going through similar experiences. Through her outreach and passion for connection, Stacy built a powerful community of support and understanding. For those looking to develop this superpower, Stacy offers actionable advice: Start small by initiating real conversations, even with strangers, and actively listen to their stories. Practice engaging with others by making meaningful, genuine comments and questions. It's not about perfection but about progress. Stacy also emphasizes the importance of being in service to others, as listening and helping people feel heard builds community naturally over time.By following Stacy's example and advice, you can make authentic connection a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileStacy Bernstein (she/her):Co-Founder and CBO, All Better Co.About All Better Co.: When it comes to everyday bumps, bites and burns, who knows better than mom? All Better Co. was founded by Stacy Bernstein and Merav Goldman, two LA-based entrepreneurial moms on a mission to modernize and innovate the first aid category with practical, clean and effective products. We are taking a second look at first aid. For decades, the family first aid kit has been dominated by harsh chemicals and single-use plastics. We're revisiting these ingredients to create skin-first remedies that better meet the needs of the body's largest organ—while doing less harm to the planet we share.Website: allbetterco.comX/Twitter: @getallbetterCompany Facebook Page: fb.com/allbettercoOther URL: allbetterco.dalmoredirect.comBiographical Information: I am a 14-year entrepreneur in the creative space. Last month, we covered a topic that was a perfect preview of the conversations we are holding throughout August. This month is wholly focused on nonprofit leaders, thought leaders, people in thought leadership and executive directors, especially those who do a lot of fundraising and relationship building.   To start us off, I have Dana on today's episode to talk about: Sustainable giving models that help build long-term relationships with donors, ensuring a steady flow of support. The power of personal storytelling and how measuring impact can amplify our fundraising efforts and create partnerships aligned with our values. Our journeys in writing and publishing books as nonprofit leaders.   00:00 - Introduction More about our guest today Dana Snyder is a dynamic speaker, author, host of the acclaimed global nonprofit podcast “Missions to Movements”, and the visionary creator of the Monthly Giving Mastermind. Her mission is to empower nonprofits to attract potential supporters through innovative digital marketing and to create sustainable giving models by establishing robust monthly giving programs, making philanthropy accessible to all.   Dana's impressive career includes serving as a Senior Digital Strategist at DKC in New York City, where she worked with prestigious clients such as The Honest Company, Sports Illustrated, and Delta Airlines. She also brought her digital expertise to American Idol as a Digital Producer. Additionally, Dana has held the roles of Director of Marketing and Development for Take Stock in Children of Sarasota County and Client Manager at Omnigon.   A sought-after keynote speaker and workshop facilitator, Dana has graced the stages of renowned conferences like NIO Summit, Cause Camp, Classy Collaborative, and the Nonprofit Storytelling Conference, sharing her insights and inspiring nonprofit professionals.   Dana holds a Bachelor's Degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the University of Central Florida. Now based in Atlanta, she enjoys spending her free time outdoors with her husband, baby girl and labradoodle, exploring new restaurants, and traveling. 02:10 - Building a sustainable giving model through recurring donations. Dana shares her expertise on the value of focusing on recurring donors over one-time unicorns, the benefits of this approach for nonprofits, and valuable insights on creating and marketing a successful monthly giving program.   13:22 - Writing a book, challenges and benefits of sharing personal stories. As published authors, Dana and I share unique insights on what it takes to produce a great book, our personal experience along the way, the hurdles we faced and the pros and cons of hybrid publishing, self-publishing, and traditional publishing. If you are looking into writing a book, start! Once you get to publishing, these insights will help you figure out what works for you.   20:58 - Self-publishing a book for nonprofit leaders - tips on marketing and partnerships. When I was on a book tour, I didn't want to spend exorbitantly, so my team and I came up with an innovative strategy to promote it. By partnering with existing partners, we utilized their resources to not only promote my book but also highlight my nonprofit's mission and programs. Check out this course  for support materials to learn how you can do the same!   28:58 - conclusion  We haven't discussed nonprofits and fundraising in a while, but we hope this conversation will equip you with the tools to achieve this year's fundraising goals. Keep these tools handy and feel free to connect with Dana and me. We would love to hear from you! In an earnings call hosted on Wednesday, March 6th, 2024, The Honest Company shared an update on their annual performance, delineating a transformative year for the organization. CEO Carla Vernon, reflecting on her first year in the role, stated that their transformation initiative was set into action after recognizing a need for change. She noted, "We were not satisfied with our previous outcomes and had undertaken significant measures to strengthen our business performance, team culture, and financial results.” The Company reported a 10% increase in revenue for the fourth quarter as well as for the entire year of 2023. This improvement in financial results was attributed to effective business strategies, evidenced by a solid balance sheet, devoid of debt, and a substantial cash position. The Honest Company has expanded its footprint in the digital realm, partnering effectively with Amazon, and witnessed notable growth in their household and wellness revenue driven by product diversification. In response to growing consumer preference for natural and allergy-friendly personal care products, the company has developed a product line featuring clean ingredients and sustainable design. CEO Vernon outlined the company's stance, stating, "We believe Honest represents a consumer products company designed for the contemporary world. Our improved financial footing allows us to better highlight the unique aspects of The Honest brand." Considering the future, the company has strategic plans to extend its distribution network by leveraging its existing partnerships with top retailers and exploring new collaborations. Cost-effective management, innovative marketing strategies, and product diversification are the anchors holding their plan for sustainable growth. In concluding the earnings call, Vernon directed attendees to the pathway ahead. Based on their performance, business strategies and understanding of market trends, The Honest Company looks to consolidate their growth while continuing to meet and anticipate market demands. However, reiteration of this fact comes with recognition of the inherently volatile nature of the market and its potential to influence future outcomes. As ever, the fiscal health of a company like The Honest Company lies at the mercy of numerous factors, both predictable and unforeseeable. While their current standing is favorable, pragmatism in forecasting future developments is paramount. This week I was delighted to have an empowering conversation about the importance of storytelling with Shannon Pruitt, the Global Chief Content & Partnership Innovation Officer at Stagwell Global. She also currently sits on the board of Versus Systems and is Chief Member at Chief, a private network built to drive more women into positions of power and keep them there. During her impressive career she was the founder and CEO of SMPI Marketing Group; Managing Partner, EVP at Horizon: Walt Disney Television Network's portfolio; CMO at The Honest Company; Chief Content Officer at Carat USA  and so much more.  From early on in life, Shannon was able to capture her imagination and unveil the power of storytelling by writing a series of stories and turning them into plays. Realizing how impactful storytelling could be if deployed for good, Shannon used it as a major tool to bring people together around ideas and initiatives. This is the reason that she chose to join the team at Story Lab and became president and CEO of the company. She then went on to create her podcast “Diversity and Disruption with Shannon Pruitt” which is a platform that brings together various industry players to share, learn, inspire and get inspired.  Furthermore, Shannon has always had the courage to be an outlier - someone who is not afraid to think not only outside of the box, but as if there is no box at all! Thanks to her curiosity and the desire to be unique she has created a career and a life where she is her own narrator.  Some powerful takeaways from today's episode: Finding out the “secret sauce” of who you are and what you can do differently should never be taken for granted. If you know your customers and are able to package your data and information with the story relevant to your audience, then you can always get the desired outcome.  Creating your own success story may not happen overnight, but always remember that progress is progress, so take it one step at a time. Showing up with good energy and curiosity will always be seen and appreciated by people, ultimately attracting new opportunities to your life.  Links: Shannon Pruitt's  LinkedIn: Shannon Pruitt | LinkedIn THE RE:INVENTION EXCHANGE - for more Inspired Content, Blogs, Podcasts, RE:INVENTION Virtual Chats, or to buy a copy of my book RE:INVENT YOUR LIFE!
