Ryan if you don’t know is one of the co-founders of Men Edmonton, and most importantly one of the men that guided me into the pro-feminist masculinity movement. I met him at a coffee shop in Edmonton, he wanted to suss me out before I could join Men Edmonton. Well i guess I fit the bill and I was invited in, and have been thankful ever since. And now he’s joined the Next Gen Men family, as the Program Manager for Wolf Pack. We got a chance to talk about what it's like to be at a Wolf Pack, the highs, the challenges, and the tension. About the group and about masculinity in general nextgenmen.ca

The second half of our conversation with German Villages of the Modern Manhood podcast and web site. We continue our conversation about masculinity, sports, stigmas around therapy, Super Mario World, and TRUCKS! Men Edmonton is a grass root group talking about violence against women, feminism and masculinity. One of German’s earliest interviews was with one of the founders of Men Edmonton, Ryan Valley. Some really amazing films mentioned by German, Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. Please find them on Netflix, or wherever, and watch. Men Edmonton sponsored an event in April of 2017 where they screened The Mask You Live In and held a panel afterwards. German recorded the session for the Modern Manhood podcast. Michael Kimmel studies gender and is featured in the documentaries mentioned above. The Precarious Manhood Theory revolves around fear. If a man’s masculinity is challenged, he’s more likely to engage in aggressive or stereotypical male behaviors. Hockey is a “man’s game,” says Patrick Maroon. Retired goalie Corey Hirsch shares his mental health struggle with the world. Foul play prevented German from completing all the levels in Super Mario World. We love the Portlandia Battlestar Galactica episode because it highlights the dangers of binge watching. Paul’s crew at work is all about comparing hours in Breath of the Wild. German mentions how men and women tend to posture in a community of their peers. He doesn’t recommend The Game, but he said there’s a chapter on peacocking. How is NHL ‘94 on the Sega so beloved by all? A mystery to be solved in a future documentary. German’s other podcast is all about hockey, Your Team Sucks. Rasheed Wallace is crazy and we loved it. German loves, LOVES, soccer as well. He’s an Arsenal fan, but his heart is with his Chilean National team. Inspired by Men Edmonton, German hopes to build a community for men to share their stories on his podcast, Modern Manhood. The Ferdinand was another website that German had started for people to share their stories about masculinity. He’s in the process of moving it to Modern Manhood. The site was called The Ferdinand because it was based on The Story of Ferdinand. The story was turned into an Oscar winning short by Walt Disney. German is delighted that women are listening to his show as well. He was a guest on What it is with Andrea Beça of That’s So Maven! who listens and encourages others to listen to his show. The event at The Metro Cinema German spoke of on the show, which played the documentary The Mask You Live, In is long past but he recorded a podcast of the experience. Help German continue to enrich the lives of us all by giving to his Patreon. Find German’s Modern Manhood show on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Lots of wonderful things have happened since our chat with German Villages. The Modern Manhood podcast has joined GRadio.ca and the Alberta Podcast Network. German is an incredible human and his show is inspiring and absolutely needed in today’s world. Don’t hesitate to reach out to him, he’s just that kind of person. And, please remember to take care of yourselves. Support Montreal Sauce on Patreon

On April 1st, Men Edmonton put on a special event screening the movie The Mask You Live In by the Representation Project. Through this movie Men Edmonton invited a panel of different men with different viewpoints, including old guest David Shepherd, to talk about masculinity in an open manner. The panel was hosted by 630CHED’s Ryan Jesperson, and the event was kicked off by Councillor and friend of the show, Scott McKeen. I was so happy that Men Edmonton did this, and received quite well too. More than 400 people attended the free event, and I got a chance to talk to some of them before the movie, to hear what brought them to watch a movie about masculinity, after the movie to hear what they liked and didn't like, and their own perspectives on masculinity. I also got a chance to talk some of the presenters.  In this episode, you will hear past guest Matt Souch, Jason Garcia, Scott McKeen , also The Ferdinand contributor Micheal Cameron, and a special appearance by Montreal Sauce host Chris Sikkenga.

I got a text from one of my friends and it said "You need to check out Shea Emry" and attached was a TED Talk from him. I knew of Shea from an article I read about his retirement as a CFL linebacker. After being engrossed by what he was saying, I sent Shea an email and he gladly obliged. One of the main reasons I wanted to have the two-time Grey Cup Champ on the show was because he's a been a voice on the positive tenants of keeping your mental health in check, and he was a great example of doing something for people past your professional career. But as you hear him talk, you find out that this is something that Shea was born to do. You'll hear about his life as a young man, his fascinations with axes, his views on locker room talk, and the reason he wanted to create Wellmen, a group for men to find their inner vulnerable primal being. Men Edmonton is hosting a free movie screening of The Mask You Live In, the Representation Project's take on masculinity in the modern world. After the movie we're going to have a panel conversation with four prominent men about masculinity and what it is to be a man. It's going to be hosted by Ryan Jespersen, and going to be held in the Garneau Theatre on April 1st. I'm going to be there, if you're coming let me know, I would love to say hey! I hope to see you there! You can catch me on Twitter and on Instagram @modernmanpod and search me on Facebook.

This podcast started in April of 2016, and today will mark its 20th episode. The man you will hear today, the 19th man on this show, is the unique counselor for downtown Edmonton, the intelligent Scott McKeen. Before he was elected to the municipal office, Scott was one of the most respected journalists in Edmonton, his beat being the goings on at City Hall. So not only does Scott have experience as a politician but his interview will also come from the experience of the ever-watchful journo. Into being elected, Scott has championed Mental Health and urban Isolation, and through this interview will share a lot of interesting thoughts about vulnerability, and how that has affected his view of how he shapes his manhood. I could not do this show without the amazing support from Men Edmonton. Not only that, support from other local ventures like Night Vision, Northern Content Network, and Seen and Heard Edmonton. Last month, I got a chance to meet the makers of number 1 rated podcast in Vue Weekly’s best of, the Awesome Hour. And As it turns out they are just laid back, chill guys who love to gab and have a tight brotherhood together. I really wanted to dive deep in what made their friendship tick, and also how they view things like fatherhood and masculinity in general. I also just wanted to hang out with which genuinely cool guys. So we decided to do something a little special and a little different, we mixed the two shows up. There’s a lot of Awesome Hour in this episode, so you’ll get to hear a lot more chatting about fun stuff, and also try to bring a little MMP to Awesome Hour. It was super fun and Alec, Ivan, and Corbo treated me like family. So we decided to collab on this and put this on both of our channels and hopefully we can do this again because it was a blast.  After this episode, check out The Awesome Hour on Soundcloud/theawesomehour or on iTunes. Or on GRadio.ca. You might even see some of the stickers in an around town. As always you can reach me at modernmanpod on twitter and Instagram. Meet German Villegas,  a youth worker who conducts interviews about healthy masculinity on The Modern Manhood Podcast and jaws about hockey with his buddies on Your Team Sucks. German has been interested in podcasting for awhile, and had a music one that didn't go anywhere. Hockey turned out to be more fruitful terrain for a lively debate, hence Your Team Sucks, where fans of three different teams chirp each other and discuss various hockey-related happenings. That's where I first became aware of German. Your Team Sucks is fun, but it's clear that German's deeper passion lies in The Modern Manhood Podcast, which he started this year to initiate conversations between men about being men. In the course of his work, German has observed that men often have trouble talking about their vulnerabilities, and he wanted to create a safe and empathetic space to do so. The podcast is affiliated with Men Edmonton,  a movement to empower men to speak out against violence and to take on positive roles. It is most certainly not affiliated with "men's rights activists." The Modern Manhood Podcast is a feminism-friendly place.  German made these interesting recommendations: Michael Cameron's blog at passionpridepurpose.com; YEG People, especially the one with Blake Loates and her We All Believe In You project  Linda Hoang's food and lifestyle blog at linda-hoang.com Megan McCormick's Mastering Health The Modern Manhood Podcast is on iTunes, on Facebook, and on Twitter (@modernmanpod). It also has a GoFundMe campaign to help German further his work. Your Team Sucks is on iTunes, on Facebook, and on Twitter (@ytsshow). German himself is on Twitter, too: @germanNOTgerman. And if you ever get an opportunity to talk to him in real life, do it. He is such a joyful person. This episode was one of several recorded at the Makerspace at the downtown Edmonton Public Library on 100in1Day. Watch for more conversations captured that day in the coming weeks.   This week’s Seen and Heard in Edmonton is brought to you by Taproot Edmonton, a new member-supported home for local stories created with the community and not just for it. Mack Male explains the origins of the name and why the stories are free but membership isn't in this episode. If you’d like to help create a new way to sustain how-and-why journalism in our city, join Taproot today.
