Donald Macleod examines Bruckner's lifelong struggle to become the great composer we know todayFrom our modern perspective, it can be difficult to appreciate why it took so long for Anton Bruckner to be recognised as one of the leading musical voices of the 19th century. His spectacular symphonies regularly pack out concert halls today but his own era took many decades to warm up to his music. Only in his sixties did Bruckner begin to achieve the popularity he deserved and, even then, he retained a reputation as a bit of an oddball. Colleagues were disturbed by his unsophisticated manners, unquestioning religious devotion and peculiar personal habits. His tendency to see enemies all around regularly tested his relationships. His romantic choices were routinely disastrous.Music Featured: Mass No 2 in Em (Kyrie) Symphony No 2 in C minor (1872 first Version, ed. W. Carragan) (2nd mvt, Scherzo. Today, Lilah and journalist Nadia Beard listen to two musicians play the same piece of music: one at 41 years old, and the other at 97. Nadia recently wrote about musicians who are debuting on major stages in their 80s and 90s. She came to this story after deciding to take up piano seriously in her 30s herself. She tells Lilah about the value of amateurism in adulthood: why it's good to do hard things, and get better at them, even if it's just for you.-------We love hearing from you. In today's podcast, I compare music and food. I start with Chopin's Prelude #8, in F# Minor and we learn a little about complexity. I talk about how vibrations are processed via the eardrum, cochlea, auditory nerve, and auditory cortex. We then transition to food, whose enjoyment is a function of partly flavors, tastes, and. texture. We learn about perinasal and retronasal flavors, about the four types of papillae on the tongue, and about texture. We also talk about chocolate, the king of food pleasure, whose quality is a function of crystal types. Finally, I talk about the three villages where we have built chocolate factories. I finish the podcast with a foray back into the world of music; we hear my rendition of Bach's F#minor prelude. Bach is the father of classical and the contrast with Chopin is considerable. As always, we are looking to help African cocoa farmers become African chocolate makers. Join the revolution by donating to the cause!1. Boult had led the UK premiere of Berg's excoriating setting of Georg Büchner's play about a war-scarred veteran driven to madness and murder in 1934, although only Act II of that performance survives. This complete 1949 recording with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Heinrich Nillius's Wozzeck and Suzanne Danco's Marie – only the second UK performance – adds to Boult's and the opera's stature on disc. Recorded live in London's Royal Albert Hall, it is a remarkable document of an exhilarating performance.Boult's pioneering championing of ‘new' music is also heard in his recording of Stravinsky's Capriccio, with the BBC SO and the prodigiously gifted Australian Noel Mewton-Wood taking the piano line.TracksCD1Alban Berg (1885-1935)Wozzeck, Op. 7, Act I Scene 1: The Captain's Room (8:25) Scene 2: An Open Field Outside the Town (6:33) Scene 3: Marie's Room (7:54) Scene 4: The Doctor's Study (7:20) Scene 5: Street Before Marie's Door (3:12) Act II Scene 1: Marie's Room (5:05) Scene 2: Street in Town (8:35) Scene 3: Street Before Marie's Door (3:14) Scene 4: Tavern Garden (10:16) Scene 5: Guardroom in the Barracks (4:48) CD2Act III Scene 1: Marie's Room (4:56) Scene 2: Forest Path by the Pool (4:26) Scene 3: A Low Tavern (2:42) Scene 4: Forest Path by a Pool (4:42) Orchestral Interlude – Adagio (3:22) Scene 5: Street Before Marie's Door (1:41) Sir Adrian Boult recalls his years with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, in conversation with Bernard Keeffe (9:17) Igor StravinskyCapriccio (16:54) I. Building a Library: Kenneth Hamilton chooses his favourite recording of Chopin's Piano Concerto No 2 in F minor. Frédéric Chopin composed this glorious concerto in 1829 when he was 20 and before he had finished his formal education. It was first performed in Warsaw, with the composer as soloist. It was actually the first of his two piano concertos to be written. Like all Chopin's works, it is full of haunting melodies and thrilling piano writing. The nocturnal middle movement in particular is a golden moment, inspired by Chopin's romantic idolization of Konstancja Gładkowska.
The acclaimed British pianist, Benjamin Grosvenor, still only 30 and yet a well-established favourite of critics and audiences around the globe, takes Robert Schumann's haunting Kreisleriana as his starting point in his new album, Schumann & Brahms. This eight-movement work portrays the mercurial personality of the fictional Johannes Kreisler, created by E. T. A. Hoffmann: Kreisler's highs and lows, and his dreamy nature, clearly mirror Schumann's own tragic manic-depressive tendencies. Grosvenor responds to the composer's autobiographical honesty with playing of sublime tenderness, dazzling variety, and imaginative empathy.Track Listing:1 R. Schumann: Kreisleriana, Op.16 / i. My friend and jewelry designer Nak Armstrong joins me in nearly 2 hours of type 4 conversation, where I am pretty sure we successfully debunk any notions of sexiness in our type, thanks to the excellent ideas of Helen Palmer. out music is patron saint of 4, Chopin's Piano Concerto no. 2 in F Minor (of course!!!), Larghetto. This piece is one of my favorites and, to me, encompasses all the mercurial moodiness, beauty, longing and rage of type 4. Orchestra della Toscana, conductor, Daniele Rustioni
My podcast #42 starts with Chopin's Prelude No. 8 in F#Minor. This is a tricky thing that takes quite a lot of practice to get it sounding halfway decent. But it's really gorgeous.Today's podcast is about our first three days in Lecce, a town of 150,000 on the southern portion of the Salento peninsula, the heel of Italy's boot. The first day, Thursday, is spent just walking around Lecce, visiting the Roman amphitheater--actually only half as the other half remains buried under a church. On Friday, we visit one of the three doors to the city, built in the 16th century--Porta Rudiae, named after the people who lived in the town before Lecce. There we shop for lunch ingredients--Frutti di Mare. And on Saturday, we rented a car and drove into the countryside--to visit a lighthouse near Otranto, Santa Cesarea Terme, a small port with sulfurous waters, then we had lunch in a farmhouse Maseria le Stanzie. After dessert, we visited a church, Santa Catarina d'Alessandra, known for its magnificent freschi and for the secret hidden in the altar. We are making progress! 2023 will be a spectacular year for Project Hope and Fairness. Not only are we starting a small business in Cordes sur Ciel that will be selling pastries, cakes, and chocolates, but we will be establishing a center for learning the ins and outs of chocolate production--in N'Douci, Côte d'Ivoire. I finish the podcast with Bach's Prelude in F#Minor--same key as the Chopin. You'll appreciate the profound difference in tone between a prelude written by the father of Classical Music (Bach) and the father of Romantic Music (Chopin). I played the Bach on the organ and the Chopin on the piano. Bach had no piano as it had not yet been invented. Our successes are financially dependent. Your donations ensure future success. Donald Macleod explores the turbulent life of Dmitry Shostakovich, and asks the ultimate question: Who was he? A faithful Soviet lackey… or a secret dissident? Dmitry Shostakovich, like his home country of Russia, was a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. From the very beginning of his career, he pushed the boundaries, but under Stalin's stifling regime, experimental artists were enemies of the state, and Shostakovich was at the top of the wanted list. The composer was forced to censor his work and betray his own morals to survive - or was he? Some say Shostakovich was Stalin's faithful lackey; others read dissident messages in his music. This week, Donald Macleod traces five turning points in the composer's career, we start with his First Symphony. Admitted to the Conservatoire while still just a child and battling ill health, his debut made a splash for all the right reasons – and the wrong ones too. Then we hear about the fateful night that Stalin paid a visit to the opera, and Shostakovich's career as a composer was changed forever. After denouncing his music, Stalin offered Shostakovich an opportunity to rescue his reputation however, it comes at great personal cost. The death of Stalin should have meant rebirth for Shostakovich, but once again he finds himself backed into a corner, forced to make a decision that shocks and mystifies those closest to him. Ivo Pogorelich has a special relationship with the piano music of the Polish Romantic composer Frédéric Chopin. It is Chopin, after all, whom he has to thank for his international breakthrough. When, at the age of 22, Pogorelich took part in the 1980 Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, his exceptional playing caused an immediate sensation. Martha Argerich, who was on the jury, described him as a “genius.” Since that time, Pogorelich has been increasingly committed, on recording and in concert, to an image of Chopin that is far from the commonplace cliché of the brilliant and pleasing composer of salon music. Now Pogorelich once again offers completely new insights into Chopin's world and the soul within the sound in what is in fact his fifth Chopin album, but the first for more than twenty years. He has selected works from the 1840s, the last decade of the Polish master's life. These include the Nocturnes op. 48 no. 1 and op. 62 no. 2, the Fantasy op. 49 and Chopin's third and last Piano Sonata, op. 58. Track Listing:1 Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 49 .mp32 I.
