This podcast will mostly concentrate on the lives and viewpoints of many different male voices talking about their own masculinity. The biggest problem we have as males is that we don't talk about our own experiences and problems about our own manhood. And that being a man now looks a lot different…
On this week's episode, we're talking about Jonathan Majors again, this time, not for great reasons. On the heels of box office success “Creed III”, Majors was accused of strangulation and intimate partner violence, so we will be talking about it. We are also going to get into another movie starring Jessie Buckley, MEN, written, directed and produced by Alex Garland. Wanted to drop an episode of Cold Takes for you all. If you want to check out the Cold Takes feed, do so here: https://pod.link/1637740882On this week's episode, we're talking about the Oscars snubbing some important movies and recognizing some others, including Women Talking, which we'll get into. Chris Rock has a new Netflix special out where he finally addresses the infamous slap. We'll also talk about Creed III and what the movie does for male relationships and brotherhoods!

Welcome back to a new season of Modern Manhood. Where we will look at the history of men's movements starting from the 1900's all the way to now in 2022. Episode 1 will drop tomorrow Oct 16th.
Hello everyone! Welcome to a new season of Modern Manhood, where we're going to go through important sections of history and talk about the men's movements that were important during those times. However before we do that, I wanted to share a discussion I did back in April with the awesome people in Reddit's Men's Lib. There's a lot of people who joined and asked questions which not only talks about the history of the men's movement, but of masculinity in it's own modern discourse. It was a great discussion and I hope you enjoy it.
On Today's Cold Takes we talk about what the hell is going on in the US and now in Canada about the "discourse" around drag shows. Why is everyone upset at them all of sudden? And why is it important to keep vigilant. Plus we also talk about sports and why cheering for any type of sports can seem like a non ethical breach.
Today we are joined by Samantha Nzessi and Remoy Philip to do an an emergency Cold Takes to talk about Jerrod Carmichael's special "Rothanial" where he breaks down his vulnerabilities in a unique and special way. CW: We spoil the special, so make sure you watch it before you listen, but please watch it because it's great.

Today we're going to release some of the content that we didn't get a chance to release when the season finished. In the coming episodes we have full interviews with the people in the show that maybe showed up for a song and a dance, or didn't show up at all, not because they were not good interviews, just because we couldn't fit them into the narrative. Dr John Rich is an educational psychologist, professor, and d certified parenting coach. As well as a father of two teenage sons. And in this episode we talk about child development through his eyes. You can check out his stuff at drjohnrich.com Enjoy!
In the last episode of the second season of Modern Manhood, I wanted to know and understand what it would be like for young men right now graduating and going off into the world. By looking back at other people's experience of being 18. With guests, Jake Stika, Jonathan Reed, Trevor Mayoh from Next Gen Men, and one of our producers Samantha Nzessi.
Today on Cold Takes recorded on November 18th, 2021. We celebrate Next Gen Men's birthday! As well as our shows are winding down, we look back on what was and what has been recording Modern Manhood Season 2 and Oreja Peluda. We reflect on the questions we wanted to ask, to the themes and topics maybe we wanted to delve into a little further. We discuss race and gender types as well look further to find out what is in store for the future of masculinity media, including our own shows.

No body that I know had a good first Sex Ed talk. How did we as a society mess this up so much? How did we take a very fundamental part of human life, our sexuality, and teach it like we were scared of it. Or treat it like a side dressing when in many cases it's the main meal. This is especially true for young men, who at about the age of 10 are starting to think about their own sexuality. We break this down with experts Shafia Zaloom and Dr David Bell.
The MetGala happened and we saw the looks the controversy, the dresses and the styles. Looking at this event, it reminds us of the conversations we had in the Inner Circle about fashion, about pink shoes, and dresses, and maybe how men's fashion (and fashion in general) can be restrictive. Or is it? What makes it restrictive? Is this a fashion problem or a men's problem? Or both? Let's dig in to the controversies (AOC, Cara Delavigne), the fashion, and the world around us.
The last few episodes of Modern Manhood has focused a lot around how young children are. So I knew to make these last few episodes we had to get a lot of the voices of parents, people who are excited to be expecting children, or are in the midst of parenting. And of course they had some amazing insights, and we got a lot of tape. So much so that we had to cut a lot of it for our main episodes, but I knew it was too good to never be revealed. So this an episode all about some of the amazing pieces of knowledge like co-parenting, online life, gay couples parenting, and the age old question, do I even want kids?

The Inner Circle is part of the NGMenbership and with this you will get to hear the live version of this show recorded Thursday May 13th, and also get to ask questions during it. We also introduce Danny Perez of @orejapeludapod talk about the masculinity media, as well as finding out what makes a language gendered (especially French, English, and Spanish). We also announce the start of the season for Modern Manhood.
Today I give you a little treat, a discussion myself, Veronika from Cold Takes, and Evan from @kinolefter had about the movie "Promising Young Woman." I'll also describe to you in audio form what is going on behind the scenes at Modern Manhood. I hope you enjoy and please leave us your comments on the movie below!
It's a long one folks, but what better way to recap what has been an eventful and stressful year than to do our annual recap with three time host Jake, and Cold Takes co-host Veronika. We recap the biggest events this year and what are our takeaways from it.
Spiritualists and spiritualist groups will have their say in most of men's conversations. Groups who use spiritual practices and wildman Jungian archetypes to try to solve this notion of the broken man. We give them too leeway, and we don’t critique them enough. Because these groups for decades have been defending an idea of gender essentialism and use ideas that have been shown to be ideologically biased, sexist, and naive of what we think of as the modern man. In this episode we talk about how porn affects how we see women and sexuality, and getting deep (no pun intended) about how other people view porn. As well, we have our thoughts on the American Election, President Elect Joe Biden and Vice President Elect Kamala Harris. Links: https://reason.com/2018/01/11/the-performative-feminism-of-kamala-h/
A lot is riding on young English soccer players to bring back glory not only for their country but for their town and club. Because not only are these players excepted to do well, they are expected to be exceptional. This is the story of the young players of England through the lens of Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling, which is a mirror to the young sports loving men of the world. Veronika is busy this week, so we invite Jake Stika, Executive Director in Next Gen Men(nextgenmen.ca) to talk about the upcoming American election as well deep diving into our new favorite TV show "Ted Lasso" to explain the positive masculinity in it. The dress code is something we have discussed before but just casually, and I just keep thinking what is the big issue with the god damn dress code, why are we spending so much time on it, and why do people have so many different opinions on it. Well let me tell you that the dress code IS a big issue, because it’s a window to how our society treats women, men, our bodies, and our decency. Articles used: https://www.racked.com/2018/7/2/17519874/dress-code-duct-tape-enforcement-violation https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/life/news/a44798/boys-wear-skirts-protest-dress-code/ https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/boys-in-several-quebec-high-schools-wear-skirts-to-protest-dress-code-1.5755570 https://noworegon.org/issues/model-student-dress-code/
On this episode of Cold Takes, Veronika and I go into what it means to have gendered role models as we reflect how we grew up noticing gender (including school dress codes). We also talk about the death of RBG and try to gingerly walk around the controversy of the movie 'Cuties.'
Today we're joined with Garrett Carlson from https://dudefluencer.com/ to talk about his ex career, the one of teaching and what made him leave. His frustrations which mirrored my frustrations. This will be the first of a multi part series on the Education System.
On this week's Cold Takes, we take a look at what is the slippery slope that can make a socialist or leftist movement unwelcome for women and people of color. We also dive into the politics and masculinity of the documentary "Boys State" https://gen.medium.com/the-lefts-misogyny-problem-3fc37eea6e0e https://medium.com/mel-magazine/advice-for-the-bro-left-from-an-og-socialist-dd45572305cd https://www.vice.com/sv/article/yvekng/how-to-spot-a-brocialist-the-guys-with-righteous-politics-but-dodgy-attitudes-to-girls https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/10/24/16503462/dsa-women-cumtown-chapo https://www.amazon.ca/Women-Race-Class-Angela-Davis/dp/0394713516
One of the biggest pet peeves I have when I read or look at things about gender, is the amount of assumptions we make around what makes a man and what makes a woman. How many times have you heard the word or phrase: “Men’s brains are like this and they think about sex all the time or they think about being the protector because that’s how they were born to be because of their real life masculine brain.” So in this episode we’re going to find out, are men really cavemen? And why essentialism is a slippery rope Links: https://stanmed.stanford.edu/2017spring/how-mens-and-womens-brains-are-different.htm https://forge.medium.com/how-i-finally-got-men-to-talk-about-their-feelings-in-therapy-cddd48b0af4c

In the midst of the bigger conversation about Black Lives Matter, Abdul Malik sent me a message about something he has been thinking about for a while, the intersection of his culture within the ever-presence of toxic masculinity and white supremacy. The intersection of race and masculinity is real, and we’re here to talk about it. You can find Abdul Malik at abdulmalik.com or on Twitter @socialistraptor

The Murder of George Floyd has sparked an international wave of reconsideration and doubt over many things. Many things that we may have considered as normal. The main one has been around the idea of policing. What does policing look like in the modern world? And is it broken? And do we even need it? Questions that not only question the role of one of the most established institutions that we have, but questions that break open what systemic racism looks like in the US, Canada, and throughout the world. Most importantly, I have to recognize that this has been a cultural moment that started in the US. So I wanted to speak to people to John Morrison (@John_Liberator) and Josh Indy Leidy (@Indi_SRS) about not only the wave shift, the idea of police abolition, but also their fight to remove a Philadelphia acknowledgment of Frank Rizzo.
Two Weeks ago, George Floyd was murdered in the streets of Minneapolis. George Floyd, a black man whose body was treated like nothing, was killed by a police officer, while three other police officers stood by. All of this was caught on camera as another example of police brutality against black people. Ever since then, the cities of the world and especially in the US have exploded with protests, calls of action, calls for reform, calls for resignations, and calls for systemic change. I invited two people who will be able to speak on their experience living as black people here in Edmonton. We will talk about what’s it like to be black here, as well as invite them to share their thoughts about the moment in America and here in Canada.
Today on Cold Takes, Veronika and I talk about the Joe Biden sexual assault allegations, and the problem of partisanship within the #MeToo movement. As well, we will talk about the crappy neoliberal history of social work.
If you look back at the 2019-2020 hockey season, it should be really eye opening to anyone who considers themselves a hockey fan. First came the misdemeanor charge for Auston Matthews, who intimidated a female security guard. Then came the firing of Mike Babcock and then the revelation of this toxic intimidating mind games towards his younger players, then came the revelations that Flames head coach Bill Peters used racist language towards a player of color, Akim Aliu. He was also fired from his job. Then came the firing of long time broadcaster Don Cherry after his xenophobic comments. Then came the racist zoombombing of black hockey player K’andre Miller. And now the Leipsic incidents All of these incidents can be looked as isolated, in the moment, and not indicative of what the “culture” is like. And many have chosen to look at it that way, unfortunately. Another way to see this is the symptom of the culture that hockey, and dominant sports fandom creates. The toxic, racist, misogynistic culture that continues today, behind the scenes.
Ask people to define what Positive masculinity is? Well, you’ll get a variety of answers, from being virtuous to being self-reliant, but not too self-reliant; being emotionally open, being a good father, or being a good partner. It gets confusing, especially if we’re looking for examples! There’s a lot! But I get why we as men who really want to relieve ourselves from toxic masculinity want to look for what is positive masculinity. We want to be better, we want to be the opposite of toxic. At the same time, we get stuck with the definition. I believe there’s a reason for that. There’s a reason why we turn ourselves in knots. I’m here to tell you that there isn’t any labels for positive masculinity.
