Kate Molleson explores the extraordinary life and music of Elisabeth Jacquet de La GuerreElisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) was a pioneer in the history of music, one of the first to bring sonatas and cantatas into the French repertoire, and the first woman in France to compose a performed opera. She explored and pushed further the possibilities of musical composition, as well as writing some of the most beautiful pieces of the Baroque era. She worked under the patronage of the most powerful figures of this Grand Siècle that saw the absolute reign of Louis XIV and the construction of his dreamed Versailles. And yet, there are still many elements of mystery and unknown in this composer's story. Kate Molleson invites you to (re)discover the extraordinary adventures of a gifted musician, with a soupçon of French flair and lots of gorgeous music.Music Featured: Harpsichord Suite in G major L'Isle de Délos ["The Island of Delos"] Harpsichord Suite in G minor Le Passage de la Mer Rouge ["The Crossing of the Red Sea"] Sonata No 1 in D minor Les Rossignols, dès que le Jour Commence Harpsichord Suite in D minor Sonata No 5 in A minor Sémélé ["Semele"] Harpsichord Suite in A minor Sonata No 2 in D major Sonata No 1 in G minor (transcribed for organ) Céphale et Procris ["Cephalus and Procris"] Harpsichord Suite in F major Sonata in D major Jacob et Rachel Harpsichord Suite in D minor Suite in G major Sonata No. 3 in F major Jonas Judith Le Sommeil d'Ulysse ["Ulysses' Sleep"] ( Le Raccomodement Comique de Pierrot et de Nicole Trio Sonata in G minor Air à boire La Provençale: 'Entre nous mes chers amis' ["Between us, dear friends'"]Presented by Kate Molleson Produced by Julien Rosa for BBC Audio Wales & WestFor full track listings, including artist and recording details, and to listen to the pieces featured in full (for 30 days after broadcast) head to the series page for Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) nhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002b676 And you can delve into the A-Z of all the composers we've featured on Composer of the Week here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3cjHdZlXwL7W41XGB77X3S0/composers-a-to-z

Scriabin's epic sonata no. 3 is one of only two with a more classical approach of four movements, before he ventured further into more integrated forms. However, you can already here savour everything that makes Scriabin great - soaring melodies, expansive textures over the whole piano, tightly knit counterpoint with individual voices and ever-unfolding chromaticism to name a few important ones. Pianist Henrik Kilhamn guides you through the composition with its four movements, with presentations interlaced with musical excerpts, the score and some analytical insights. In this gem of a sonata, played on an original instrument, Bach hides the simplest musical theme in plain sight: one note.  Alex looks at the end of movement 3, where Bach gives a pedal point E to the viola da gamba, asking for over 30 seconds of one sustained note on this instrument.  Simple, yes, but perfectly aligned with the notes around it.  It's just another gem in the sea of jewels that is Bach's oeuvre. SOMM RECORDINGS announces the first volume of Prokofiev Milestones, featuring three characterful sonatas and a sparkling arrangement of music from Romeo and Juliet performed by violinist Lana Trotovšek and flutist Boris Bizjak accompanied by Maria Canyigueral on piano.Prokofiev Milestones revealingly turns the focus away from the prolific composer's famed orchestral works and celebrated ballets to his rich and varied chamber music.First performed in 1943, the Sonata for Flute and Piano (Op.94) is, as Robert Matthew-Walker comments in his notes, “music not of war, but of peace”; a pastoral escape laced with wit and mischief vouchsafed within a pristine neo-classical frame. It is heard again, transformed, in Prokofiev's transcription for Violin and Piano (Op.94a). Composed soon after, it lays claim to being “one of the finest 20th-century works in the genre and a genuine masterpiece”.The Sonata for Two Violins (Op.56) is heard in a new arrangement by Boris Bizjak that eloquently makes much of its sentimentality, drama, and vitality.A characterful suite drawn from Romeo and Juliet, and arranged for violin and piano by Lidia Baich and Matthias Fletzberger, revels in Shakespeare's great romance and Prokofiev's ardent response to it.TracksSonata for Flute and Piano in D Major, Op. 94 (24:15) I. Synopsis1685 was a good year for composers: Bach, Scarlatti and Handel were all born in 1685, as was, on today's date, Italian composer Lodovico Giustini.Like Bach, Giustini came from a family of musicians, and he began his career by succeeding his father as church organist, eventually landing the prize organ post at his hometown cathedral, a position he retained for the rest of his life. Giustini also took up a new-fangled keyboard instrument known as the forte-piano, which, unlike the harpsichord, struck the instrument's strings with small hammers rather than plucking them like a harp. This new technology allowed music to be played loud and soft (piano and forte), with a more nuanced range of dynamics and phrasing.Giustini's claim to fame is that in 1732 he published the first collection of sonatas written specifically for the instrument we now call the piano. Although Giustini's sonatas attracted little attention when they were first published, since only a few wealthy royals could afford to own these new and expensive instruments, over the next two centuries thousands of pianos — and piano sonatas — began appearing in even the most modest of musical households.Music Played in Today's ProgramLodovico Giustini (1685-1743) Canzona, from Sonata No. 12; Andrea Coen, fortepiano Brilliant Classics 94021

To the general amazement of musical circles, Aleksander Tansman, a citizen of Lódz, a young student of law, and a student of Piotr Rytel and Henryk Melcer swept all three prizes (the Grand Prix and two honorable mentions) at the first Warsaw composition competition, organized in independent Poland in 1919. Owing to this spectacular success, he then organized his first composition concert in Lódz and Warsaw. During the concert held on the 27th of February 1919 in Lódz, he performed together with Eli Kochanski his first three compositions for cello and piano, including Sonata No.1 (Allegro, Adagio, Fugue), written in 1918. The manuscripts later went missing; however, the fact that they once existed and the record of favorable critical reviews after the concert proves the young composer's interest in the cello as a solo instrument. I Cavatine Moderato13 II Sicilienne Andante grazioso14 III Rondine Allegro ma non troppo15 IV Serenade AllegrettoHelp support our show by purchasing this album  at:Downloads (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) Classical Music Discoveries is sponsored by Uber. @CMDHedgecock#ClassicalMusicDiscoveries #KeepClassicalMusicAlive#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofVenice #CMDParisPhilharmonicinOrléans#CMDGermanOperaCompanyofBerlin#CMDGrandOperaCompanyofBarcelonaSpain#ClassicalMusicLivesOn#Uber#AppleClassical Please consider supporting our show, thank you!Donate (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store) staff@classicalmusicdiscoveries.comThis album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).

SynopsisOn today's date in 1757, the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti died in Madrid. He was 71 years old, and for the last 38 years of his life was employed at the court of Princess Maria Barbara, first in her native Portugal, and then, when the Princess married the heir to the Spanish throne, in Madrid.Although Domenico could very well have stayed in Italy and become a famous opera composer like his father, Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico spent the better part of his life composing over 600 virtuoso sonatas for Maria Barbara. Only a handful of these were published during his lifetime. In the 19th century, Liszt and Brahms took the trouble to hunt down additional Scarlatti sonatas in manuscript, but the bulk of them remained unpublished and unknown until a complete edition was published in the 20th century. While not coming anywhere close to matching Scarlatti's output, one 20th century American composer, the Philadelphia-born Vincent Persichetti, composed ten harpsichord sonatas of his own. The growing number of modern-day harpsichordists has meant that in addition to the wealth of OLD music for the instrument, many contemporary composers have followed Persichetti's example, and are writing NEW works for this old instrument.Music Played in Today's ProgramDomenico Scarlatti (1685 - 1757) Sonata in c, K. 363 Elaine Comparone, harpsichord Laurel 838Vincent Pershichetti (1915 - 1987) Sonata No. 4 Elaine Comparone, harpsichord Laurel 838

Hilary Hahn - Eugène Ysaÿe: Six Sonatas for Violin (Deutsche Grammophon) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Hilary Hahn by “This was my grand homage. And I really put so much love and time and energy and respect into the recording,” violinist Hilary Hahn says. “I really wanted to focus on that aspect, almost like giving a gift to a relative on their birthday. This is my gift to my musical grandfather on his hundredth birthday.”Hahn is talking about her new recording featuring the violin sonatas of Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. He composed these masterpieces 100 years ago this month. Each one was dedicated to a top violinist of the day.“I am one generation removed from him musically. He was born in the 1850s. I was born in 1979, but my teacher was born in 1907 and studied with him. So there was something about listening to him, listening to the early recordings of his I when I hadn't heard them for a while, that was very surprising for me.“I have spent most of my career trying to get closer to my own way of playing, my own sense of expression and my own sense of freedom within the instrument. And I realized that instead of getting closer to myself as an individual, I've gotten closer to myself as part of a long history. Because when I heard Ysaÿe, it was like opening a box in your grandparents attic and looking at a photo of an ancestor. But it is also like looking in the mirror, because they might be wearing different clothing but there's something about them that's just like you.“While listening to his recordings, I realized there is musical DNA. Somehow, deep in my soul, I have internalized a set of values in my playing that I must have inherited.“Ysaÿe also wanted to lift up some incredible violinists of his day, and he dedicated these sonatas to several of those. I don't know if it's obvious to the listener or the performer, but the deeper you get into the pieces, the more you realize it's customized for different players. The feeling of playing the instrument is different in each piece, and it's a bit of an insight into what it must have felt like to be that person. Also, there are lots of hidden messages in these pieces that were never written down in the music. So it's kind of a little game of Clue.“A very good example of that is the beginning of the Sonata No. 2, Obsession, which was dedicated to a violinist who played fast but also practiced in a very fragmented way. So he would kind of start with one thing and quickly work on a phrase of something else and go back to the other thing. A sort of free-flowing mentality is in practice that Ysaÿe brings that into his writing for that particular violinist.”You said listening back to yourself playing these pieces gave you goose bumps. What were you hearing that caused that?“I think the most goose bumpy thing for me was just listening to Ysaÿe's own playing and then getting as close as I wanted to these pieces in a total immersion studio situation. Listening to the playback and drawing these connections back to the past, but also knowing that what I do now is very much geared toward the future. And so that feeling of inheriting this sense of mission, of passing things on from the past to the future generations.” Ysaÿe: 6 Sonatas for Violin Solo, Op. 27 - Sonata No. 6 in E MajorTo hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts.GiveawayMaya Beiser New Classical Tracks GiveawayYou must be 13 or older to submit any information to American Public Media/Minnesota Public Radio. Hahn recorded all six sonatas in chronological order. “In playbacks, I was struck by how surprising my own playing sounded to me. The goosebumps told me I was headed in the right direction. These sonatas are truly hypnotic, and when we'd wrap for the day, I'd step into the winter air in a haze, my brain reharmonized by the tonalities that had vibrated through my jawbone: a sound bath if ever there was one.”Track Listing:1 Sonata No. 1 In G Minor – À Joseph Szigeti / I.
