Content Warning: Talk of death by suicide, suicidal ideation, and sexual abuseDr. T and Truth Fairy welcome former NHL hockey player Corey Hirsch to the podcast to talk about medicine and mental health. Corey was drafted by the New York Rangers and played many seasons for the Vancouver Canucks but after retiring from playing hockey and becoming a coach and Sportsnet analyst, he turned his life and his focus to mental health. Corey is a firm believer in psychedelic medicine and wants to remove the stigma of its use in sports communities.Corey shares his mental health journey and his battle with OCD with Dr. T and Truth Fairy and describes how he ventured into psychedelics two years ago after not finding the right therapeutic fit in other modalities. He found his way “back to his life”, as he puts it, and ascribes a great sense of hope and relief to psychedelics. The different perspective he gained and his positive experience led him to his fight against stigma today. Corey also talks openly about how death by suicide has impacted him personally and the peace medicine gave him around that trauma.Truth Fairy describes how she met Corey and Corey shares the story behind that meeting, in which he experienced an intense journey into self-love after some medicine. One of the things Corey stresses is how working with medicine has opened him up and given him compassion and more love in life. Dr. T, Truth Fairy, and Corey discuss the intricacies of OCD and where it stems from, examine the emotional abuse inherent in a hockey player's career, and examine Corey's newfound purpose in life. This episode shines a light on how useful psychedelic medicine can be as applied to mental health and how the stigma only hurts people's opportunities to experience this type of healing for themselves.“It gives me a different perspective. You know, it's amazing when you sit with psychedelics and you think, oh, this person screwed me over or this happened or that happened, and it shows you a different angle of it. And it's like, wow, I did not even think of that perspective, right? And it's taught me to venture into things with kindness and love.” - Corey HirschAbout Corey Hirsch:By the time he was 21 years old Corey Hirsch had drunk from the Stanley Cup and won a silver medal at the Winter Olympics, but these accomplishments no longer mattered to him. Born in Medicine Hat and raised in Calgary, he was drafted by the New York Rangers and played for many seasons with the Vancouver Canucks. After retiring from play, Hirsch became an NHL coach for elite goaltenders and prospects, and later an analyst with Sportsnet. Dedicated to ending the stigma of mental health, he is also a co-host of The Players' Tribune podcast, Blindsided. In October 2022 Corey released his first book—The Save of My Life—a compelling look behind the mask of a professional hockey player that offers both understanding and hope to anyone living with mental illness.Website: CoreyHirsch.comBook: “The Save of My Life” by Corey HirschPodcast: Blindsided__Contact Punk Therapy:Patreon: Patreon.com/PunkTherapyWebsite: PunkTherapy.comEmail: info@punktherapy.com

We discuss Corey's Book The Save of My Life and his struggles with mental health. The Blueshirt Underground Show with Jim and Eddie got its start in 2009, known then as Blueshirt Banter Radio. Our idea was simple: a weekly live broadcast, talking about all the latest Ranger news, taking calls, interacting with listeners, and doing our best to entertain. No topic has ever been off limits, rants about players, announcers, opponents, and sometimes even fans are commonplace. It's a show that bills itself as “Not so Serious Radio for the Serious New York Rangers fan”. Corey Hirsch played 14 seasons as a professional goalie, including 108 NHL games. He raised the Stanley Cup and came within a postage stamp goal of backstopping Canada to an Olympic Gold medal. But the save of his life never happened on the ice. It happened when he stopped short of driving off a cliff. The plan was to finally be rid of intrusive thoughts he couldn't shut off. Now he has learned how to deal with them. Corey's brain lies to him, it tells him things that aren't true. It is called OCD and the form he has is probably not what you think it is. People such as Hirsch can drown in irrational thoughts about harming themselves or others, contracting deadly diseases and/or need constant self-assurance about their sexual orientation. Corey, like so many others that suffer from this mental illness was ready to end it all…but he didn't, he got help and came forward. While so many out there suffer, often in silence, Hirsch uses his platform to make sure they aren't alone. Five years after his important mental health revelation in The Players' Tribune, his new book with Sean Patrick Conboy goes deeper into that journey from despair to hope.
Sheldon Kennedy never dreamed of being a 20-year-old kid who would be in and out of psych wards. He never dreamed of being in a hospital on suicide watch, and he never dreamed of going through drug and alcohol treatment eight times. But that became his reality. From a young age, Sheldon was sexually abused by his junior hockey coach, Graham James, a prominent figure in his hockey community. And for 11 years, Sheldon struggled in silence — the first five while the abuse was going on, and the following six during which still no one else knew the truth about what had happened to him. As Sheldon rose through the ranks of professional hockey, the weight of his secret drove him down some dark paths. It wasn't until 1996, when he came forward with what had happened to him, that Sheldon could finally see a future for himself as a husband and a father. Still, looking back on his NHL career is complicated because there are feelings of shame and guilt around who he was. What he does take pride in is the fact that he can be happy now – scars and all. In 2014, Sheldon was honored with the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian ranking. And to him, that should be a symbol of hope for anyone struggling to become the person they did dream of becoming. *This episode contains content and topics that may be difficult for some listeners. Among AHL goaltenders, Hirsch ranked second in wins (30), minutes played (3,512) and saves (1,724). He also posted one shutout as he helped the Crunch earn a berth in the Calder Cup Playoffs. The Medicine Hat, Alberta native returned for five games in Syracuse the following season, but spent the majority of that campaign in the NHL with Vancouver. Hirsch totaled 108 NHL games during his career with Vancouver, the New York Rangers, Washington Capitals and Dallas Stars. He also saw AHL action with the Binghamton Rangers, Albany River Rats, Portland Pirates, Philadelphia Phantoms and Utah Grizzlies, in addition to his time with the Crunch. On this episode of Blindsided, we welcome professional golfer Bubba Watson. Bubba has won 12 times on the PGA Tour, including twice at The Masters, where he claimed the Green Jacket in 2012 and again in 2014. But few knew that during that time Bubba was struggling with anxiety. His new book, Up and Down: Victories and Struggles in the Course of Life, details how his anxiety affects him personally, professionally, and physically. How the death of his father made him conscious of that anxiety. After a trip to the hospital for a panic attack that brought him to his knees, it was Bubba's faith that helped pull him back up and guide him through his darkest moments. From victory to desperation and everything in between, Bubba's story is something so many can relate to. Here's Bubba Watson on Blindsided. On this episode of Blindsided, we welcome Kurt Warner. Kurt is a former NFL quarterback who won a Super Bowl with the St. Louis Rams. And in 2017, Kurt was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But before all that … before the trip to Canton … before the 32,344 passing yards … before “The Greatest Show on Turf” … he stocked shelves at a local Hy-Vee grocery store in Cedar Falls, Iowa. And what he did in that store is the key to understanding how he transformed from an undrafted free agent into a football legend. Kurt's story is a story of resilience and it's powerful to hear. On this episode of Blindsided, we welcome Nate Boyer. Nate is a former long snapper for the University of Texas Longhorns, but he's unlike any other football player you've ever met. Nate volunteered as a relief worker in Sudan, then enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan as a Green Beret. And that's all before he started playing football. People celebrate him, but he's always felt undeserving of the accolades. While people saw a hero, he saw a man with wounds. It's taken him time to heal. And during that period, Nate learned that people should be proud of their scars. Both those seen and unseen. He's also one of the most prominent professional athletes to speak out about his mental struggles. His article, “Everyone is going through something” struck a chord in the sports community and beyond. It helped a lot of people and athletes to open up.
