In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with legendary session drummer Paul Leim, whose six-decade career quietly powers a staggering piece of the soundtrack to our lives. Paul has played on more than 12,000 songs across over 2,000 releases, with 1,400+ silver/gold/platinum certifications, and global sales topping 540 million units. His discography encompasses over 150 combined GRAMMY nominations and wins, as well as 40+ major film/TV awards, and credits on more than 150 films and 100 television specials and series. If you've heard Lionel Richie, Shania Twain, Lyle Lovett, Kenny Chesney, Whitney Houston—or cues from Dirty Dancing, Smokey and the Bandit II, The River, or even Return of the Jedi, you've likely heard Paul.We trace the arc from East Texas clubs and Dallas jingle mills to late-'70s Los Angeles, where a “typical” week meant two complete drum rigs leapfrogging between Lionel Richie sessions, network TV soundstages, film dates, and award shows. Paul talks mentors and “angels” (band director Neil Grant, Robin Hood Brians, Doc Severinsen), lifelong friendships with the TCB family (Ron Tutt, Jerry Scheff), and lessons that still anchor his playing—especially dynamic control and “letting the mics work.” We get inside the high-wire reality of studio life. Paul calls it “95% boredom and 5% sheer terror”, including how to read conductors, when to lead the time, and when to ride it, and what it's like to move from live kit to orchestral percussion with John Williams. There are great shop-floor stories: cutting Lionel's “Truly” and counseling Lionel at the fork-in-the-road moment of leaving the Commodores; discovering that Lyle Lovett's “The Blues Walk” was gloriously vocal-free; and a deep dive into the precision world of Mutt Lange and Shania, ending bass notes just before the snare for mix “air,” the chrome-over-brass “important” snare, and the on-the-fly invention of tom “Mutt flaps” for short, open fills. Paul also shares a personal fork he chose differently: turning down a James Taylor tour to be home with his young family, only to hand JT the final serial-numbered Leim signature snare decades later at the White House.Today, Paul is still very much in motion: bandleading the TCB Band in Europe, steering The Tennessee Four with Thomas Gabriel to carry the Cash legacy, and jumping into Million Dollar Quartet shows—proof that the hang, the humility, and the groove endure. It's a conversation about craft, friendship, stewardship of a gift, and the choices that shape both a career and a life.Music from the Episode:Pick it Apart (Mark O'Connor)Truly (Lionel Richie)The Blues Walk (Lyle Lovett)Thank you for listening. It's just Kevin and Andrew this week, and it's a fun one. The guys talk Marvel Zombies, the Alien: Earth finale, the season premiere of Gen V and Wayward, with all of that book ended by some wonderful tangents!!   We give you a rare look into what happens before we start recording a show, which is usually just senseless babbling. This time, though, the conversation was productive so it went into the show! Talking about a show that is well over 20 years old could come across as dated, but Battlestar Galactica is a master class in storytelling, character building, and budget management. Honestly, if you haven't seen it before, you owe it to yourself to give it a watch. Get past the sci-fi-ness of it and settle into the DEEP social story. You will not be disappointed.   Getting into more current content, Kevin talks about the first two episodes of the animated series, Marvel Zombies. It's a big swing to take, and it could be argued that they whiffed a bit. It's beautiful and gory, but a lot of the voice acting misses the mark and that story could be more adult, but leans into silliness at times. Think of it like the MCU version of Shazam. There's potential, and it's not bad, but it's not as good as it could be.   Next up, the guys move into things that kind of kicked butt and talk about the Alien: Earth finale. Some of the perdictions made in our last episode came to fruition, and the show ends up on a very solid note that leaves it wide open for a promising season 2. Overall, it's a solid ending to an excellent season of television.    The guys then move on to quickly discuss this new season of Gen V, which is off to a rockin' start. Full disclosure, and it should be obvious, if you didn't like The Boys or Gen V season 1, this is more of the same, so it could offend if you are faint of heart. But if you liked those two shows, then you are in luck. This starts off great and is unravelling some great surprises that are worth watching for.    With the episode winding down, Kevin talks about the show Wayward on Netflix. It stars Toni Collette and pretty much no one else. The show is meant to be a suspense/horror show but seems to lack all of the punch that Netflix shows in the Mike Flanagan era. This leads the guys to their final tangent, the future of Mike Flanagan. It may be mostly speculation, but it's a lot of fun!   As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Insert all your tired 2025 jokes here because after the last nine months, we're pretty much out as this episode, we go All-Voyager, All the Time with a slate of episodes concerning ‘The Year of Hell,' one of Voyager's more infamous wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey moments. In ‘Before and After,' we see the writers try and tease out what never comes to pass as a time-displaced Kes discovers something horrifying, Harry Kim married her two-year old daughter! Then we go into two-part territory as we enter ‘The Year of Hell' and a lot of bad things happen to Voyager while Kurtwood Smith makes us ask ‘Is Annorax Star Trek's best villain?' But seriously… Harry Kim married a two year old and I don't care if she's a short lived alien race, that's real weird, especially considering who the father is!Episodes Discussed: Before and After (08:29), Year of Hell Parts 1 and 2 (38:25)Talking Points Include: Miles has a quota of Ed Gein jokes per year. Weird Al, The Devils, One Piece, Harry Kim marrying a 2 year old, Tom Paris asking for time off to have sex, the Voyager Homecoming comic, Miles requests Charlie do a Planet Wales for his next Star Trek RPG campaign, Annorax might be the best Star Trek villain, Miles doesn't platinum video games, Kurtwood Smith might play Trek's best villain, Chakotay actually getting to do something, Year of Hell failed so that Battlestar Galactica could soar, would it have worked as a year long season? How sometimes, compromises and failures can make a great TV show, probably for the best Tuvoy didn't lose a leg, does Harry ever get a promotion? History changing stories usually have one set ending and the much needed keyfabe of ongoing media.

It's another oddly formatted week, but this time it's Lauren fighting the bed bugs early. While we have her, we talk The Roses, and Eden, then the boys talk The Truth About Jussie Smollett?, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Alien Earth Episode 4, Ozark, and Battlestar Galactica. Andrew and Lauren were able to catch The Roses this week, in time for the show. As big fans of the original film, The War of the Roses, everyone was expectedly excited for this one. Unfortunately, despite a solid cast, it just didn't quite deliver on the magic of the original. It does have its moments, and it isn't all bad, but it does leave a lot to be desired, and it's probably best to just watch the original Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner classic. Before she slips off into the land of dreams, Lauren talks about the Ron Howard film, Eden. It has an incredible cast including Jude Law, Daniel Bruhl, Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas, and Sydney Sweeney. This is a true story of a group leaving Eastern Europe in the 30s, looking to start a new world. Unfortunately, it's not the Eden the title suggests, as there is a lot of backstabbing and infighting, a la Lord of the Flies. Overall, it's a really solid film and worth watching, though the box office numbers suggest otherwise. Once the adult supervision is gone, Andrew takes the lead and talks about the new Netflix documentary, The Truth About Jurnee Smollett? It's that ? that actually really sells this one. While this doc jumps deep into the situation that made Jurnee Smollett infamous, it does such a good job of staying neutral that it's unlikely to change your opinion on the matter if you already have one. It is excellent and does present a good amount of info, making it a satisfying watch for Andrew, but it isn't likely to change your mind if it's already made up. As will be the case for the next month or so, the topic eventually turns to Alien Earth. The show is cruising along and continues to be excellent. We're diving deeper and deeper into what makes the hybrids tick and even getting to meet some new terrifying creatures, including an almost adorable baby xenomorph that conjures maybe the wrong images, a la Spaceballs! After that, it's full-on tangent time. Kevin talks about his Ozark journey and Andrew talks about his 2001 Battlestar Galactica rewatch with his fiancée. If you like when these two ramble on, then this section of the show is what you've been waiting for! As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't already, don't forget to Like & Subscribe. We love new viewers! Also, leave us comments and let is know how we are doing and what we can be doing better. Enjoy the episode and have a great week! Únete a nosotros, o atrévete a combatirnos. Send us a textThis week's moving picture was selected by guest host (and Season 15's Squib Games curator/raison d'être) Jack, canonically a Ted Kaczynski stan, as confirmed by his pick CLEARCUT (1991).   And so the pod returns to Canada (a.k.a. America's sombrero) and Canadian lore with another émigré director's first North America feature-length film (see Hard Targét ep from two weeks ago for our prior), this time with a story originally told in the Canadian novelist M. T. Kelly's A Dream Like Mine about Canadian First Nations people fighting to maintain the sanctity of their land against industry and classified in the movie's hard media BluRay release as “folk horror” by Sevrin in its 15-disc All the Haunts Be Ours collection. Cold War Polish-famous director Ryszard Bugajski was chosen for his political provocateur Polish pictures (after a stint directing Canadian TV) and modifies the 1987 novel, moving it from mercury poisoning and mining to the timber industry after the recent Oka standoff (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oka_Crisis) and hence finding a title, which at least one host this ep finds oxymoronic. Bugajski also credits himself with cutting a lot of the dialogue from the screenplay to let the film visually provide exposition.  The film stars Graham Greene--which is why host Ryan's grandfather saw the limited release film that by the 2000's had only two extant prints (one copy was about to be disposed and why the transfer on the BluRay and streaming has 35mm film's cue marks, a.k.a. cigarette burns)--as a trickster spirit or actual human person (depending on whether lead actor or director was asked) who challenges the film's White protagonist and lawyer played by Ron Lea who's failed to protect the land against mill owner Bud Rickets played by Battlestar Galactica's (the newer, good one) own Michael Hogan (not to be confused with Jack Nance who concurrently white haired and sporting a moustache by a river was at this time portraying Pete in Twin Peaks, you know, “Wrapped in plastic.” and “There was a fish in the perculator.”). Greene's Arthur (no last name like Cher or Prince) as either/both/neither water spirit or direct-action First Nations radical coerces the lawyer to kidnap the mill owner, which leads to a few deaths and some skin peeled off Rickets' leg. The film is lensed by François Protat, who'd shot Weekend and Bernie's two years prior for First Blood director (and Canadian for sneeze sound effect) Ted Kotcheff. The entire folk horror or eco terror or supernatural revenge or suspense film resolves with an expected but undelivered whip pan to Rod Serling smoking a cigarette whilst giving an enigmatic, summative moral of events witnessed.  This ep goes big on host Tall Ken trivia as he finds his notepad; reveals his chainsaw approach to episode editing; sees in Greene's jeans and sneakers attire the spirit of Jerry Seinfeld (contemporaneous character, rather than actor or comedian or present-day Netflix movie director); and explains how he identifies people and sizes them up. Additionally, Ryan, Thomas, and Jack have sane things to say. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gLetterboxd (follow us!):Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias
