Bear McCreary Talks Singularity: Ekleipsis

Supersons

If you know the name Bear McCreary, it's probably from the goosebumps he's given you without you even knowing it was him. You may know his work from Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead, God of War, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. He's one of the most prolific composers working today, and on July 31st, he's releasing Singularity: Ekleipsis, his second metal album. He sat down with us to talk about creating something that is his own art. We dug into how neither of us comes from a metal background and what that means for the music he is creating. He drops some great recommendations of things to listen to in order to find your way into the genre. The album itself is brilliant from top to bottom. Bear McCreary discusses how this was, in his opinion, more finely tuned than the first, but both albums have been on constant repeat for me lately. About Bear McCreary and Singularity: Ekleipsis Award-winning composer and recording artist Bear McCreary began his career as a protégé of legendary film composer Elmer Bernstein, before bursting onto the scene scoring the revered series Battlestar Galactica in 2004. Since then, McCreary has won three Emmy Awards, including two for Disney's Percy Jackson and the Olympians and one for his theme for Da Vinci's Demons, a musical palindrome, and has won twelve International Film Music Critics Association Awards, including the award for Score of the Year in 2024, his second. Named the 23rd Most Definitive Bear in Popular Culture (The Ringer), he's also been the subject of a clue on Jeopardy! Project highlights include The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Amazon); Foundation (Apple TV); the beloved series Outlander (STARZ); Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures); The Walking Dead (AMC); and Netflix's Academy Award–nominated documentary Crip Camp (produced by Barack and Michelle Obama). McCreary's celebrated scores for Sony PlayStation's blockbusters God of War and God of War Ragnarök have earned him two BAFTA Awards and two Grammy nominations. In 2024, McCreary released The Singularity, a hard-rock concept album featuring legendary rock talent including Slash, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Rufus Wainwright, and more.  McCreary has collaborated with artists from across the musical spectrum, including Hozier, Fiona Apple, Shirley Manson (Garbage), Annie Lennox, and the late Sinéad O'Connor. In 2014, Maestro Gustavo Dudamel conducted a suite of McCreary's music with the L.A. Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.

So zumindest würde Patrick den Inhalt von "Immun" beschreiben, die er vielleicht nicht für die bisher schwächste Episode von Battlestar Galactica hält, dafür aber für die frustrierendste. We talked about “The Singularity: Ekleipsis,” due out July 31 via Sparks & Shadows Records, and what it meant to step beyond composing for other stories to build a universe driven completely by his own creative vision. We also explored Bear's incredible range of influences behind the record, bringing together progressive metal, cinematic storytelling, folk traditions, and an all-star lineup of collaborators into something uniquely his own. From the difference between composing and being an artist to the challenge of translating a project this ambitious to the live stage, this was a conversation about fearless creativity, constantly pushing boundaries, and never being afraid to build something entirely new.Stay connected with Bear McCreary, visit: https://bearmccreary.com/, https://www.instagram.com/bearmccreary, and https://www.facebook.com/BearMcCrearyOfficial/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

Eden has a 16-hour "K-pop Brain Rot" playlist for shuffling, but that's the exceptionHot Takes — BooksAudiobooks = reading? Leans yes from both, but acknowledges the research is contradictory (small sample sizes, brain scan studies on both sides)E-readers vs physical: Peter goes digital 9 times out of 10 (lighter, portable, side-lit). Eden does physical for comics, e-books for prose (form factor matters less for text, but hates reading comics on a screen)Hot Takes — GamesFavorite game of all time: Mass Effect 2 (Peter — tighter gameplay than ME1, loyalty missions, assembling the crew). Doom (1993) (Eden — infinitely replayable with new WADs every day, nothing feels as fluid)Best console generation: Xbox 360 / PS3 era (both) — Halo 3 LAN parties, Gears of War couch co-op, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Fallout 3/NV, Viva Piñata, and yes, Sneak KingOpen world vs linear: Both prefer a tight 20-hour experience over a 100-hour open worldFranchise that peaked early: Age of Empires II (Peter — nothing since comes close). And Eden's shitpost answer of the day: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is better than every Civilization game that came...

Science fiction has been part of television since at least the 1950s, when “Lost in Space” and “Star Trek” gave us charmingly quaint visions of what the future could look like. By the dawn of the 21st Century, technology had caught up to creators' visions, leading to a Golden Age of genre television. Series celebrated by critics and embraced by audiences with their mind-blowing imagination and, at their best, critique and comment on the human condition, even as they chronicle society's intersections with technology, time, and space. So join the Great Pop Culture Debate as we attempt to name the Best Sci-Fi Television Series from 2000 to 2025.Shows discussed: “The Expanse,” “Firefly,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Wars: The Mandalorian,” “The X-Files,” “Star Wars: Andor,” “Westworld,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” “Doctor Who,” “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds,” “Black Mirror,” “Orphan Black,” “Stargate SG-1,” “3 Body Problem,” “Foundation,” “Fringe”Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Kara Austin, Victor Manibo, and Zack Derby as they discuss and debate 16 of the most influential science-fiction TV series of the past 25 years. For the warm-up to this episode, in which we discuss additional 21st Century sci-fi shows that didn't make the bracket, become a Patreon supporter of the podcast today. This week on Toilet Radio: Gen X Correspondent Ian sits down with acclaimed film, video game, and television composer Bear McCreary. For folks unfamiliar, Bear has composed music for everything from Battlestar Galactica, God of War, The Walking Dead, and The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power. Bear tells us the origins of his desire to put out heavy metal albums after working with Brendon Small, Serj Tankian, and Gene Hoglan on a track for Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019). Now on his second album of his Singularity arc, Bear tells us about getting every heavy hitter in hard rock and heavy metal to join him in releasing tunes. Gen X Ian presses Gene on drum quantization and sampling, the economics of recording drums, and sequencing music for a modern metal sound. Is releasing a metal record a sound financial investment? Hear it from a world-renowned musician himself, “Absolutely not!” This is an excellent interview. Enjoy! Music featured on this ‘sode: Bear McCreary – Black Box (feat. Joe Duplantier) This program is available on Spotify. It is also available on iTunes or whatever they call it now, where you can rate, review, and subscribe. We are kicking off a massive, year-long celebration! Starting today, May 25th, 2026, Father.Son.Galaxy. is counting down to the upcoming 50th anniversary of Star Wars. Over the next year, we are dedicating special episodes to exploring how a galaxy far, far away completely reshaped pop culture. In this premiere episode, Kerwin is joined by award-winning author John Kenneth Muir to discuss his book, "Science Fiction and Fantasy Films of the 1970s". Together, they explore the cinematic landscape prior to May 1977—an era dominated by dark, dystopian themes and cautionary tales like Logan's Run, Soylent Green, and The Omega Man. They also examine how the massive success of Star Wars shifted the industry, paving the way for a wave of late-1970s sci-fi and fantasy milestones, including Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Moonraker, Alien, and Disney's The Black Hole.

In FOLLOW UP, the child social media crackdown keeps expanding. Turkey just approved a ban for under-15s, and Sony will require age verification for PlayStation communication features in the UK and Ireland starting in June—because now you need to prove you're an adult before trash-talking strangers online. Meanwhile, Anthropic's prediction that fully autonomous AI employees would already be transforming business hasn't materialized. Agentic systems are still struggling with basic workflows and, in some cases, slowing developers down. And in a more concrete reversal, Elon Musk acknowledged that pre-2023 Tesla Hardware 3 will never support Full Self-Driving. Customers who paid for the feature are now being steered toward discounted trade-ins, new cameras, and upgraded hardware—prompting obvious legal exposure.IN THE NEWS: SpaceX is reportedly targeting what could be the largest IPO ever, at roughly a $1.75 trillion valuation, with dual-class shares that preserve Musk's control through super-voting rights. Prediction markets continue to degrade: Kalshi suspended political candidates for trading on their own races, and Polymarket saw alleged manipulation via a tampered weather sensor at Charles de Gaulle Airport. On the AI front, Anthropic's new Mythos model had a chaotic rollout—used by the NSA, applied to patch hundreds of Firefox vulnerabilities, and briefly exposed through unauthorized access in a developer portal. Amazon followed with a $25 billion investment in Anthropic, even as governments appear to access similar capabilities independently. At the same time, the economics are tightening. Free tiers are shrinking, GitHub Copilot is shifting to token-based billing after costs doubled, and startups are normalizing six-figure monthly AI compute bills. Infrastructure growth continues unchecked: thousands of new data centers are planned across the U.S., while xAI faces scrutiny in Memphis over water usage and delayed mitigation projects. Environmental commitments increasingly resemble marketing rather than enforceable targets.Policy signals are equally aggressive. DHS is exploring smart glasses for ICE agents with facial recognition and gait analysis by 2027. Palantir published a manifesto advocating expanded use of state power with rhetoric that raised concerns about ideological framing. On a lighter note, a University of California, Santa Barbara study suggests that brief exposure to experimental film measurably increases creativity compared to standard social media consumption.MEDIA CANDY: Silo returns July 3 on Apple TV+, while The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 is expected sooner than planned. Battlestar Galactica lands on Paramount+ and Pluto TV May 1. Dead Can Dance is releasing monthly singles via its Bandcamp imprint. Deezer reports 44% of daily uploads—about 75,000 tracks—are AI-generated, though only a small fraction of streams come from them, many flagged as fraudulent. And yes, Jessica Jones is back in Daredevil.APPS & DOODADS: Apple patched the notification-cache bug that allowed forensic tools to recover deleted Signal messages. Roblox agreed to a $12 million settlement with Nevada and is rolling out facial age estimation, ID verification, and new contact controls, while still facing multi-state litigation. Cash App is targeting younger users—ages six to twelve—with parent-managed accounts, debit cards, and interest incentives. Separately, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction protecting ICE-tracking apps, ruling that government pressure on Apple and Meta to remove them likely violated First Amendment protections.IN THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE: AI-generated Star Wars fan films are improving visually, even if performances remain rigid. The current era of Star Trek is effectively closing out with a large prop auction, notably excluding Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The broader discussion circles back to time compression—post-pandemic, and with age—and the persistent disconnect between economic scale and general dissatisfaction.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.Shopify - Sign up for your one-dollar-per-month trial today at Shopify.com/grumpyPrivate Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today.
