"Keeping Bitcoin running is the primary concern here. Making sure that Bitcoin is available to be used as money by everyday people, any actor who wants to come onto Bitcoin and send one UTXO from one to another. That's the most important piece for me when thinking about defending Bitcoin. And the biggest difference, of course, is that this is a decentralised system. There is no central controller. There's no central control room giving out commands and saying 'this has to change, you must do this.'We are a decentralised group of individuals who are acting on the network. And so the defence of the system is not down to, say, the CEO dictating that everyone has to have their password be 64 characters and change it every three months, which is bad practise, by the way. It's everyone working together to do their part. So that's the biggest difference." ~ Luke de Wolf I sat down with Luke de Wolf to talk about the real security risks facing Bitcoin today. Luke has spent his career protecting critical industrial control systems like oil pipelines and electrical grids. Now, he is taking that hardcore cybersecurity mindset and applying it to the Bitcoin network in his brand new book, *Defending Bitcoin*. And trust me, it is a conversation you need to hear. We spent a lot of time debating the heated topic of arbitrary data and the drama surrounding BIP 110. Should we enforce strict rules to keep the blockchain pure, or is trying to force a chain split a bigger threat to Bitcoin's integrity as money? Luke actually changed his mind on this recently, and he lays out exactly why the stakes could be too high to play games with consensus. His perspective really cuts through the noise and challenges the tribal thinking happening on both sides. But we didn't just stop there. We also get into mining centralization, selfish mining attacks, and why we need to view Bitcoin as high-stakes critical infrastructure. The decisions we make now could determine if this network survives long-term. Is the ultimate cryptocurrency ticking toward a sudden, quantum-powered collapse? In this episode, Chris Tam, President and Head of Innovation at BTQ, joins host Konstantinos Karagiannis to shatter the comforting illusions many Bitcoiners still hold about the quantum computing threat. While many assume that a Q-Day attack would only disrupt future mining, Tam exposes the true, terrifying reality: Quantum computers utilizing Shor's algorithm are on an exponential trajectory to cracking the elliptic curve cryptography that safeguards individual wallets. Even worse, recent upgrades like Taproot have inadvertently introduced more vulnerable public keys into the ecosystem, making a network upgrade more complex than ever. The real crisis isn't just finding a cryptographic fix: it's time. Experts warn that migrating the entire decentralized Bitcoin network to a post-quantum standard could take upwards of seven years, but the network simply lacks the block space to move everyone before quantum adversaries are predicted to break the encryption. To bypass the political gridlock of Bitcoin core development, Tam details how BTQ surgically built a working, post-quantum Bitcoin Quantum testnet to experiment with solutions like BIP 360 in the real world. From the catastrophic ripple effects a Bitcoin hack would have on traditional financial markets to BTQ's pioneering work on day-one quantum-resistant stablecoins in South Korea, this episode is an urgent, eye-opening wake-up call for anyone holding digital assets. For more information on BTQ, visit www.btq.com/. The whole crew is back for another roundtable, and things get wild right out of the gate. I sat down with Steve, Mechanic, and Jeff to talk through the absolute mess that is the current state of things. Jeff shares an update on his Canadian immigration purgatory, which spirals into a bigger conversation about living like an outlaw and whether any of us are truly free from the system. But we couldn't ignore the recent news. We talk about the crazy story of a guy who used Claude to brute-force a lost Bitcoin wallet from eleven years ago. It really makes you rethink how safe your standard passphrases actually are, and we share some wild visual memory tricks to secure your setup. We also rip into the current hype around ETF inflows and outflows. People track these numbers like they are predicting the future, but we explain why they really just tell you exactly what the market already did. And of course, we had to get into the technical fights that never seem to end. Steve brings some fresh data exposing the true bimodal distribution of network users right now. We spend a good amount of time arguing about Taproot, chain bloat, and the massive confusion between true censorship and simply stopping spam. Mechanic lays out his latest case for BIP 110 and makes a really compelling point about why the healthiest participants for the network are actually the ones willing to mine at a complete technical loss. It sounds completely backward, but it makes total sense once you hear his breakdown. We wrap things up by looking at the broader picture of decentralised movements. From Occupy Wall Street falling apart to the current crop of hijacked political factions, we ask if it is even possible to build a movement without a vulnerable central leader. Plus, we drop some thoughts on local LLMs and the ongoing Prime Trust bankruptcy drama. BIP-361 forces everyone to move to new quantum-safe address types before that happens. Two phases: first, you can't send to old-style addresses. Five years later, old-style coins can't be spent at all. If you haven't moved your coins by then, they're frozen.Controversial because it means coins that don't migrate get effectively confiscated — including Satoshi's ~1M BTC and anything on lost seeds. What happens when a company that is already employee-owned realizes its ownership model is not built for the next chapter? In this episode, host Colleen O'Connell-Campbell sits down with Michael (Mike) Fotheringham, CEO of Taproot, and Robert MacDougall, Board Trustee. Taproot is a 42-year-old national social enterprise with 775 employees and over $65 million in annual revenue. They unpack how and why the organization became Canada's largest Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). Taproot's journey runs from its founding by a laid-off public servant in British Columbia, through a management buyout that created an ESOP with seven shareholders, to the realization that the next succession needed a cleaner, broader, and more scalable structure. Mike and Robert walk through the real story: how a LinkedIn podcast discovery sparked the conversation, why the EOT legislation provided a template that other structures could not, what governance looks like four months into the new model, and why transparency with employees started years before the transaction - not after. Key Takeaways: Taproot was founded 42 years ago by Bill Stelmachek, a former British Columbia public servant, and operates in two domains: children and youth services (including group homes) and direct support for adults with diverse abilities, across BC, Alberta, and Northern Ontario. When Bill decided to exit 18 years ago, he had interest from U.S. private equity and real estate buyers, but chose to sell to employees. Seven employees purchased the company and paid him out over several years, forming an ESOP. That ownership group grew to 30 shareholders over time. The succession challenge resurfaced as major shareholders began approaching retirement. The board explored multiple options - another management buyout, private equity, gifting share certificates to all employees, trust company arrangements, and buy-co structures - but each had significant drawbacks, particularly the administrative burden of managing shares across nearly 800 employees. The EOT conversation began when Mike heard a podcast from Social Capital Partners about the employee ownership trust model, shared it with the board, and connected with Tiara LeTourneau at Rewrite Capital Advisors. A feasibility study confirmed Taproot was a strong fit, and the board green-lit the transaction in January 2025. The EOT's capital gains tax exemption was not the primary driver of the transaction, but became a strong motivator during the process and contributed to 100% of shares being transferred into the trust. The more fundamental appeal was that the EOT legislation provided a clear template - parameters, structure, and guidance - that other models lacked. Governance under the new EOT structure includes three employee trustees (staggered three-year terms, elected by employees), an independent board of directors (confirmed by the trustees), and the management team. These three groups are now more distinct than the previous model, where senior management, majority owners, and the board overlapped heavily. Day-to-day operations have not changed dramatically. Taproot had already been practicing quarterly all-staff financial updates for two years before the transaction - a transparency habit that made the cultural transition smoother. Employees are now waiting for the first year-end to see what dividend distribution looks like. The design and governance work began before the transaction closed, with joint sessions between trustees-to-be, the incoming board, and management to establish how the groups would work together. Four months in, the structure is still being refined - but the right mix of continuity and new perspective is in place. Rewrite Capital Advisors guided the feasibility study, due diligence, and transaction design. Previous Cash Rich Exit Podcast episodes with Rewrite Capital and Firefly Insights cover the technical structure of EOTs in more detail. Taproot's story shows that selling your company does not have to mean selling out your values. A thoughtful process - including governance at the board level - can create both liquidity and long-term stewardship. Google warns of quantum threat to bitcoin. Google's Quantum AI team released a new whitepaper revealing that Bitcoin's security could be compromised with significantly less computing power than previously assumed. The report suggests that it might only take 500,000 to crack the network and Bitcoin's own Taproot upgrade might have made it easier to target transactions in real time. Co-host is Jacob Boersma. In this Confab, Max sit down with Kevin Loaec, CEO of WizardSardine, for a frank discussion on the surge in coordinated, violent Bitcoin-related kidnappings in France and broader personal security lessons for anyone holding wealth. They explore practical, non-technical measures—community awareness, operational silence, modest living, and physical deterrents—alongside technical defences that reduce attacker incentives. Kevin explains why the threat was “late but inevitable,” how societal factors may be fuelling the crime wave, and why relocation and strong local networks can matter as much as any wallet setup.Max and Kevin discuss Liana, WizardSardine's time-locked, Taproot-powered wallet. Kevin breaks down inheritance-first design, decaying/expanding policies, and how time locks can prevent premature access while enabling robust recovery for families and businesses—without revealing recovery paths on-chain. They cover miniscript device support (what works today and what's missing), fee/UX trade-offs, future payjoin integrations, and how to pair Liana with spending wallets or Lightning for better privacy. Join Tommy Shaughnessy as he speaks with Nic Carter, partner at Castle Island Ventures, about his deep dive into the existential threat quantum computing poses to Bitcoin. After six months of intensive research and discussions with Nobel Prize-winning physicists, Nic breaks down why the "quantum threat" has moved from theoretical FUD to a material risk that the Bitcoin community is currently unprepared to face. They explore the "Q-Day" timeline, the vulnerability of Satoshi's 2 million BTC, and the urgent need for a migration to post-quantum cryptography. Can Bitcoin's rigid governance survive the most significant technical challenge in its history, or will sovereign nations and private firms reach the coins first?
In episode 302 of the podcast, we're rejoined by Phil Lipscomb, bassist extraordinare of the band Taproot to look back on 25 years of their major label debut, ‘Gift'.We dig into their early days leading up to being signed, how Atlantic Records/Velvet Hammer took notice, the writing and production of the record, and its legacy in the nu metal scene. We start the episode catching up with Phil about all things Taproot from the last few years. Shows, festivals, playing new music out and everything in between. Grab your drink and pull up a chair - it's another Bitcoin Roundtable with Simple Steve, Bitcoin Mechanic, and my brother Jeff Swann. This time we're diving into the chaos around soft forks, censorship, and the latest round of Bitcoin drama. On Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty speaks with author and transformation coach Chandra Lynn about her framework Root to Rise: How to Love Life. Chandra breaks down the five “root” areas (health, relationships/self, career, friends, family) and the six human needs adapted from Maslow to show how high achievers and everyday people get stuck in survival mode—and how to shift into purposeful, balanced living. You'll learn practical tools like the Emotional Triad, simple journaling prompts (“What do I want? Why do I want it? What am I willing to do about it?”), and how defining your taproot (your why) becomes fuel for resilient action. About the guest : Chandra Lynn is the author of Root to Rise: How to Love Life, a certified transformation coach, and founder of GlowLiving. After 25 years leading marketing for brands like Apple and Mercedes, she built a method blending human needs psychology with soulful practices to help people cultivate resilience, balance, and purpose. Key takeaways: Root to Rise framework: Balance five roots—health, relationship/self, career, friends, family—then align them with six human needs to exit survival mode and create fulfillment. Six human needs (adapted): Security/certainty, variety, connection/intimacy, growth, significance/self-worth, and transcendence/contribution. From overwhelm to clarity: Use three prompts—What do I want? Why do I want it? What am I willing to do about it?—to prioritize healthy, meaningful action. Emotional Triad tool: Shift state by changing (1) physiology (move, breathe, sunlight), (2) focus (gratitude, possibility), and (3) meaning/self-talk (be your own best friend). Taproot = your why: Identify the deeper motivation that sustains momentum when discipline fades (e.g., showing up as the best parent/leader/creator). Embodied signals: Survival mode shows up as tension, sleep and appetite swings; fulfillment feels balanced, energized, and self-supportive. Journal to integrate: Ask great questions, write first, analyze later—let insight surface before you optimize. Update the blueprint: Release outdated childhood expectations; define success on present values, not social comparison. "If you have this disconnect between Core devs that value one thing and the users that value something else, something's got to give at some point, right? Either you get developers that are more in line with the users or a lot of the other users kind of end up leaving and so on.So this is not a trivial concern and it's a big attacksurface and we've seen it in these communities where a lot of this political stuff enters and then next thing you know it gets completely sort of subsumed by that movement, by institutional capture, if you will. And that's not just true in open source software, it's true in every nonprofit organization and so on.This is a big problem."~ Jimmy Song Jimmy Song joins me for a deep dive into one of the most heated topics in Bitcoin today - the debate around Bitcoin Core, the OP_RETURN controversy, and the growing cultural divide within Bitcoin development. We explore whether Bitcoin's technical decisions have become political moves, and what “verify, don't trust” really means when trust itself starts eroding. We talk about Bitcoin's identity crisis between innovation and ossification - should Bitcoin keep evolving with new toys, or hold the line and protect what already works? We cover everything from Taproot's legacy to mining decentralization, censorship, left–right polarization in the dev community, and the spirit of cypherpunk independence. Most importantly, Jimmy challenges us to think for ourselves - to stop being clones of whoever we agree with, and to test every assumption against reality. Because Bitcoin's strength has never been in consensus for its own sake, but in the willingness to ask hard questions. Check out our awesome sponsors! We're so glad you are here! Thanks for checking out Sunday's message!-- SUNDAY'S NOTES --Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV Deep roots anchored to God through trust are essential to faithfulness and fruitfulness through any season. This is what the LORD says: Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind. He makes human flesh his strength, and his heart turns from the LORD. He will be like a juniper in the Arabah; he cannot see when good comes but dwells in the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land where no one lives. Jeremiah 17:5-6 CSBJesus is my ride or die, and He already died, so even when I die I'll live.Whatever you focus on will be where your life takes root. Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. Psalm 1:1-3 ESVReal communion with and surrender to God are key to a life rooted in Him.Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESVThe heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:9-10 NKJVTrust is the tap root of a wise and fruitful life of faith! Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall. Matthew 7:24-27 NKJVThere are lots of ways to live lost and bound, but true trust in Jesus is the one and only way to live found and free!-------------------------------------------------Download the 828 Church app!To view our latest e-newsletter, the Midweek Momentum, and subscribe to our weekly updates, go here! https://linktr.ee/828church
