As important as it is to talk about that which we have received, so must we mark the loss of the games whose time has passed. Board games leave our collections for many reasons, so we're going to revisit the ones that found better homes in the past year. Before we press F, we talk about Long Shot: The Dice Game, Hallertau, and Welcome to New Las Vegas. 02:43 - Long Shot: The Dice Game 09:30 - Hallertau 20:04 - Welcome to New Las Vegas 28:43 - Games We've Recently Let Go 29:34 - Res Arcana 30:20 - Seasons 31:58 - War Chest 33:04 - Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture 33:35 - Kingdom Builder 35:11 - Pendulum 37:44 - Nētā-Tanka 38:00 - Nevada City 38:33 - The Magnificent 41:05 - Ethnos 41:24 - Crokinole 42:49 - El Grande 45:00 - Imperial Struggle 45:53 - Iwari 48:41 - Through the Desert 49:25 - Lords of Hellas 50:27 - Troyes 51:11 - Watergate Join the discussion at: https://boardgamebarrage.com/discord Join our Facebook group at: https://boardgamebarrage.com/facebook Get a Board Game Barrage T-shirt at: https://boardgamebarrage.com/store

If you like dice action selection games where you slowly build up action combos, then Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture by Undine Studios is for you. Now don't be put off by dice rolling, beause in this game you can easily mitigate bad luck and even bad rolls still give you plenty of opportunities. Oaxaca ("wa-ha-ka") is also beautifully illustrated, quick to learn and really quick to play, while still maintaining enough interest even for very "serious" gamers. So there is something for everyone and one of the few games that I can confidently recommend for family gaming as well as regular games night groups.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2019/02/09/oaxaca-crafts-of-a-culture/
We are happy to be joined again by three designers of excellent games with non-traditional themes - Elizabeth Hargrave, designer of Wingspan; Sarah Reed, designer of Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture; and R. Eric Reuss, designer of Spirit Island. In this half of the conversation we consider some larger picture questions that arise from their games. They share thoughts on how much background research went into all of their games, and also how they address the issue of problematic depictions of different cultures in games. Finally, we tackle the difficult issue of representation in the game designer and publisher communities. We hope this conversation sheds more light than heat, and that folks with lots of different perspectives can learn from it.

Happy New Years, everyone! Our number one wish here at ENGN is to get more and more games that color outside of the lines, so to speak. New and different games makes the gaming hobby better all around. To that end, we gathered three designers of games with very non-traditional themes to share their thoughts - Elizabeth Hargrave, designer of Wingspan; Sarah Reed, designer of Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture; and R. Eric Reuss, designer of Spirit Island. For this first part of the conversation, we consider questions about tying theme and mechanisms, selling games that don't have zombies and Cthulhu all over them, and some of the weirdest themes we've ever heard of. Thank you to some folks from the 1 Player Guild on BGG for providing excellent questions!
Lauren talks with Sarah and Will Reed, designers of Oaxaca: Crafts of a Culture (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/147241/oaxaca-crafts-culture), about accessibility and developing the game. If you want to look into getting the alebrijes mentioned, visit Viva Oaxaca Folkart (https://www.vivaoaxacafolkart.com/miniature-oaxacan-wood-carvings-alebrijes-folk-art.html) for the importer Sarah Reed mentioned.
