HER Style Podcast | Buy Less, Shop Smarter, Build a Wardrobe You Love
Hey, friend! Before we dive into today's episode, I want you to picture something. Imagine that you're standing in your closet, holding a piece you've owned for years. Maybe it's a cardigan. Or a pair of jeans. It could be that black top you've worn a hundred times. And you're having the same conversation with yourself you've had at least ten times before. "This is fine. It still works." But then another thought creeps in. "Could I do better?" And suddenly you're stuck. Because on one hand, we're constantly hearing messages about buying less, being more intentional, making the most of what we already own, and avoiding unnecessary purchases. On the other hand, I never want you to settle. The point is to build a wardrobe you love, right? So where's the line? How do you know when it's time to keep remixing what you already have versus when it's time to upgrade or update something? That's exactly what we're talking about today. By the end of this episode, you'll have nine clear signs that it's time to stop trying to make something work and start looking for a replacement piece that serves you better. Today we're chatting with Gianna Corvino — the founder of The New York Archive, which has just opened The New York Archive Collective, a brand-new flagship vintage collective in the heart of Chelsea. Gianna is a vintage shoe specialist turned store owner, and I'm so excited for you to hear how she went from playing dress-up in her mom's closet to curating 15 vintage vendors – across the range of the fashion dress up closet – under one roof. Gianna grew up in New York City, completely enamored with her mother's shoe collection — pink, sparkly heels that felt like the coolest thing in the world to a little girl. That early love of nostalgia, accessories, and on-screen icons from movies like 13 Going on 30 and The Devil Wears Prada eventually became the foundation for The New York Archive, which Gianna started as a portfolio project while applying to fashion school. Amidst starting the archive, though, her story took a wild turn — after a startup equity deal fell through she felt the push to go all-in on vintage. She landed her first Manhattan Vintage Show spot, started sourcing pieces for celebrity stylists and television shows, and built a devoted online community through sharing radically transparent "building in public" content on social media. Just one week ago, Gianna opened the doors to The New York Archive Collective — a brick-and-mortar space she built out with her building's handyman, Angel and with help from his son, almost entirely through DIY, donations, and Facebook Marketplace finds. On today's episode, we get into all of it — why the vintage shoe niche was a space nobody else was filling, the holy grail hunting and sourcing stories – including for pieces worn on the recent Love Story show about Carolyn Besette Kennedy, and what it's like to watch your wildest dream become a physical space you can actually stand in. Let's dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [4:46] Gianna grew up in New York City, completely enamored with her mother's shoe collection. What if the very thing you think is "childish" is actually the life skill you need most right now? In this "Report from the Creative Closet," I'm looking at the fear of uncertainty that keeps so many adults stuck. We discuss why we've become so uncomfortable with open-endedness and why we feel like we need a manual for everything—even for taking a break. I share the "Obsolete Child" philosophy, the reality of the "Imagination Lab," and why reclaiming your sense of play is the fastest way to break the cycle of perfectionism. This isn't about making "art"—it's about remembering how to be a person who is willing to try, fail, and stay curious. I'm Nancy Norbeck, and I'm your Messy Muse Mentor. I help people feel alive again through creativity, curiosity, and play. In this episode, I discuss: The Adulting Bind: Why we can't do things well because we won't try until we're already perfect. The Instruction Obsession: What a 3-week break taught me about the difference between adults and children. Adaptability vs. Rules: Why "play" is actually the highest form of problem-solving and resilience. The Power of Permission: How to give yourself the green light to move outside the boxes you've built. Ready to send your inner critic to summer camp for an hour? We get together once a month for a relaxed, co-working-style session where you can work on whatever you want—without any pressure to do it "right." We send the shoulds and inner critics off to summer camp where they're kept busy rather than getting in our way. Join the Creativity Circle.
Ruta's Closet tells the compelling Holocaust story of a Jewish family, imprisoned in the tiny Shavl ghetto in Lithuania. The Kron family survived the horror of the Nazi regime, thanks to the resourcefulness of Meyer and Gita Kron and the bravery of their rescuers. While Ruta's Closet is based on fact, it reads like fiction. The drama of the events described and the richness of the characters make it a compelling work of narrative nonfiction-as intriguing as it is inspirational. The Krons are the focus but horrific events in the ghetto are also revealed, including mass murders, a Nazi ban on births, the removal of all children to the Auschwitz gas chambers. All dreadful events; but accounts of brave rescues and daring acts offer hope for humanity. Ruta's Closet is also the focus of a Holocaust awareness podcast series, available from all popular platforms. High School teachers can also download a teacher's guide and classroom activities recommendations, authored by the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. Adult readers can download Book Club Talking Points, also authored by VHEC. Both guides, along with additional informative audio and text material, are hosted at the book's interactive website, rutascloset.com.

Hello Poison Friends! We are covering some long standing pharmaceutical companies and their deep dark secrets over the years, starting here with Johnson & Johnson. This company has been around for generations now, and they have garnered a reputation for their gentleness and trustworthiness--mainly through the sales of baby products and their marketing of such. However, the company was originally started in 1886, by three brothers looking to make a difference in the world with their medicated plasters and antiseptic bandages. Leadership of the company would pass out of the family only a few generations later, under some unfortunate circumstances. While they still have the same credo on their website, values shown in their actions, or lack thereof, changed entirely. In this part, we are looking at their history and the first of many scandals that stretched for decades until new science and methods of testing for toxic substances caught up with them. Unfortunately, once it was discovered that their baby powders (and other talc products) were contaminated with a cancer causing toxin, thousands of women had become ill and died from past exposure to them. Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters! We truly appreciate you all! Learn More & Schedule Your Call TodayTHE FOUNDATION EDIT: http://www.theeverydayicon.co/the-foundation-editYour closet can look “organized” and still fail you everyday. The real issue usually isn't the number of clothes you own, or a lack of willpower. It's that most closet edits start in the wrong place: the hangers, not your life.I walk through why a wardrobe audit breaks down when you don't have context. If you've ever kept pieces out of guilt, donated things you later needed, or tried to build a capsule wardrobe and still felt stuck, this will make the pattern painfully clear. I share the three-part life assessment I want you to do before you touch a single item: where you actually spend your time, how your role and responsibilities have shifted, and the gap between how you need to be perceived and how you're currently showing up. That perception gap is where personal style becomes real again, not just an “aesthetic.”Next, we turn the closet edit into strategy. You'll hear the exact questions to map your current week, name what changed in the last one to two years, and identify what you want people to feel when they see you. The goal is wardrobe clarity, a personal style foundation, and a closet that supports your real life so getting dressed stops draining your energy. If you're ready to make your edit stick, listen now, share this with a friend who feels stuck in their closet, and subscribe and leave a review.Learn More & Schedule Your Call TodayTHE FOUNDATION EDIT: http://www.theeverydayicon.co/the-foundation-editADDITIONAL RESOURCESTHE SIGNATURE EDIT NEWSLETTER http://the-executive-edge.kit.com/560a58e519WEBSITE:www.theeverydayicon.coYOUTUBE https://www.youtube.com/@tiffanyodeanINSTAGRAM https://www.instagram.com/styledbytiffanyo/

Yinz Are Good shares the good stuff, the good news, going on out there and celebrates all the good people who are making it happen: The people who are lifting others up, who are taking care of their neighbors, the people who are saying, “What can I do today to make our world a better place?”.We've got one very busy docket today…It's Tressa here. I had one of the best days a couple of weeks ago - a day that, as I look back on it, perfectly represented the city of Pittsburgh: it involved community nonprofits, sports, and the arts. First, I had the honor of attending the Pittsburgh Steelers' Annual Community Partners Appreciation Breakfast - where they invite nonprofits, civic leaders, and local partners together to recognize their collective impact. There were many familiar Yinz Are Good faces there: like Marisa Escajeda from Girls, Inc.; Pastor Tim/Tim Smith from Center of Life; the folks from LaRosa Youth Club; Charlie Batch from - of course - the Best of the Batch Foundation… And then, I crossed the Allegheny River to meet with the President & CEO of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Kendra Whitlock Ingram, at Arts Landing - their new & gorgeous outdoor civic space. So coming up first for yinz is my chat with Kendra, then we'll head over to the Steelers breakfast, where you'll hear from current Steelers Outside Linebacker Alex Highsmith, the Steelers' Senior Director of Community Relations, Blayre Holmes Davis, and then two of their community partners: AJ Jefferson from the Homeless Children's Education Fund and Charlotte Heyward-Wesley from The Heyward House.Highlights of this episode are featured on Matters.com — our show sponsor and where the world goes for what matters. What happens when you spend so much time being "reliable" that you forget how to be meaningful? In this third installment of Reports from the Creative Closet, I'm exploring the "Be Good" trap. We often learn very early that being predictable and agreeable is safer than being fully alive, but that safety comes at a high price. I discuss the Traffic Rule Covenant—a look at how we use rules to reduce uncertainty, and what happens when we stop treating those rules as tools and start treating them as our identity. We'll explore the "quiet grief" of adulting, the friction of being "manageable" in professional environments, and why your "rough edges" are actually the parts of you the world needs most. I'm Nancy Norbeck, and I'm your Messy Muse Mentor. I help people feel alive again through creativity, curiosity, and play. In this episode, I discuss: The Social Survival Instinct: Why we'll do anything to avoid being "thrown out" of the community. The Traffic Light Metaphor: Understanding rules as tools for safety rather than definitions of self. The Reliability Tax: Why professional "manageability" often requires us to override our internal signals. The Adulting Lie: Why being a "grown-up" shouldn't require you to abandon your curiosity and play. If you're tired of thinking about answering a creative call but never actually doing it, come join me for an hour and start feeling like yourself again. The Follow Your Curiosity Creativity Circle is a safe, welcoming, and encouraging environment where we send the shoulds and inner critics off to summer camp where they're kept busy rather than getting in our way. Join us here!

For a long time, the strange activity in the house was easy to dismiss. Footsteps upstairs. Toys moving around. The feeling that someone else was in the room. Creepy, sure—but manageable. Then they saw the little boy.Not a shadow. Not a vague figure in the corner of a room. A child. Running through the upstairs bedrooms while the family's daughters were outside playing in the yard. After that, everything in the house started to feel different. The shared closet between the girls' bedrooms became the center of the activity. Toys appeared where no one had left them. Footsteps crossed the upstairs landing at all hours. And the family slowly began to wonder if whatever was in the house wasn't trying to scare the children at all. Maybe it was trying to join them.#RealGhostStories #GhostChild #HauntedHouse #ParanormalPodcast #TrueGhostStory #HauntedCloset #ChildSpirit #ThingsInTheDark #ParanormalEncounter #UnexplainedMysteryLove real ghost stories? Although each of us is free to believe whatever we want, when it comes to our personal finances, we tend to operate with a number of shared beliefs. One of these is the belief in the benefit of ownership. For example, it’s better to own your own business than be an employee. Financially, that benefit is not necessarily true. Many startup business owners go for years before they even pay themselves at all. And many employees make a lot of money. Emotionally and psychologically, though, it’s a different story. Because happiness is, by definition, how you feel – owning your own business can be the greatest thing ever - if you feel good about the inevitable challenges it brings. Both of Peter's guests on this edition of Out to Lunch have taken the leap from employee to owner. And both of them have businesses that are dependent not just on their business acumen, but also on their singular talent and taste. Sue Zemanick started her career in New Orleans in 2003 as a chef at Commander’s Palace. By 2005 she was Executive Chef at Gautreau’s in Uptown New Orleans. In 2013 Chef Sue won a James Beard Award for “Best Chef, South.” In 2019 she opened her own restaurant in Mid City, called Zasu. In 2025, Zasu earned the Olympic Gold Medal of hospitality, a Michelin Star. Zasu is one of only a handful of restaurants to earn Louisiana's first-ever Michelin stars — and the only one run by a woman. Margaret Sche came to New Orleans from Los Angeles where she had been a fashion stylist, merchandiser and trend forecaster. Margaret was surprised to find there wasn’t a women’s fashion store here that was truly reflective of the style of the city, and the flair of its female fashionistas. She corrected that gap in the market with a store, called The Saint Claude Social Club. Today, the store is called The Closet by Saint Claude Social Club, and it has a whole different business model. It’s a fashion rental store – a real-world version of online fashion rental businesses like Rent The Runway and Nuuly, but with a local-focus. It has a curated collection of fashion ranging from Mardi Gras ballgowns to vintage finds that Margaret picks up in Paris. When you start your own business making widgets, you hope to eventually get to a point where the widget factory rolls along and keeps making money even when you’re at Disney World. But when you start a business that depends entirely on you – like your own restaurant or a curated fashion boutique - you’re not just making widgets. You’re creating experiences for other people. People don’t eat in a Michelin Star restaurant just to get enough carbs to get through the next 8 hours. And they don’t go to a curated fashion boutique to find clothes just to keep warm. The types of businesses Sue and Margaret are running demand the same kind of business skills as it takes to run a widget factory, and a whole lot more. Their businesses wouldn’t exist without their particular talents, creativity, and imagination. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch seven years ago, we've published more than 30,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 150,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.
Wines We're Drinking: Cremosi Vineyards Pinot Noir — Latina-owned winery based in Oregon This week's episode is one for the cultura and the closet, mija. Jessica sits down with Elvira Zamora, visionary founder of Thrifts.com and Chicano Elegance — two platforms rooted in culture, community, and conscious expression. Elvira grew up in Lima, Peru, where reusing, repurposing, and refusing to waste were just a way of life. When she arrived in the U.S. at 10 years old, the wastefulness she witnessed was a full-on culture shock — and it sparked a lifelong commitment to sustainable fashion that she's turned into a movement. From the hidden health risks of fast fashion fabrics (yes, you might literally be wearing plastic) to the radical joy of clothing swaps and sewing circles, Elvira breaks it all down in a way that's real, funny, and genuinely eye-opening. She also shares the story behind Chicano Elegance, a glam gala she created after waiting two decades to see Latiné culture celebrated on a fashion runway — so she built the runway herself. This one will have you rethinking your closet, your consumption habits, and maybe even that wedding dress sitting in a bag in the back of your room. No judgment, just chisme and good wine. Roger Whitney kicks off a new series on decluttering for retirement, explaining how the accumulation of “stuff”—from physical belongings to financial accounts to relationships—can unconsciously shape our decisions and limit our ability to envision a fulfilling next chapter. He reframes retirement as a rare opportunity to reset your identity, let go of what no longer serves you, and intentionally design a life aligned with who you want to become. The episode wraps with listener questions across a variety of retirement planning topics, including follow-ups on last week's discussion around longevity. OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE OF THE RETIREMENT ANSWER MAN(00:00) Roger introduces retirement as a “refresh” moment and explains why decluttering is essential to stepping into a new identity. (01:11) Roger outlines the month-long decluttering series and introduces the three key domains: things, money, and relationships.ROCKIN' RETIREMENT IN THE WILD(3:43) Will realized that selling his BMW wasn't about the car, but about letting go of a past version of himself and it inspired him to keep decluttering. PRACTICAL PLANNING SEGMENT(05:13) Roger defines the core problem of clutter, explaining how accumulated decisions create overwhelm and limit future possibilities.(07:42) Roger explores physical clutter and how decades of possessions tied to past life stages can prevent you from envisioning a new lifestyle.(13:32) He breaks down financial clutter, including scattered accounts and legacy investments, and why simplification becomes critical in retirement.(17:26) Roger discusses relationship and obligation clutter, emphasizing the need to be intentional about who and what you invest your time in.LISTENER QUESTIONS(22:20) A widow shares her experience navigating longevity risk and loss, prompting a discussion on planning flexibility, spending, and building a support network.(29:33) Roger responds to a listener's approach to modeling longevity scenarios and explains how to use projections to inform better life decisions rather than just optimize numbers.(35:30) He evaluates whether an annuity recommendation actually solves a meaningful problem or simply adds complexity.(41:30) Roger discusses the trade-offs between saving more versus using existing cash, highlighting flexibility and optionality in retirement planning.SMART SPRINT(46:07) Spend time this week identifying areas of clutter in your things, money, and relationships and simply observe what may no longer be serving you.CLOSING THOUGHTS(47:20) Roger reflects on listener feedback and The Noodle Live.REFERENCESSubmit a Question for RogerSign up for The NoodleNote: The opinions expressed are for informational purposes only and should not replace personalized advice from licensed professionals.

Most people spend their whole lives chasing a version of success that looks right on paper and still leaves them empty. That is the conversation at the center of Episode 539, and it is one of the most honest hours this table has produced. Candis Quinney is back and she brings the moment that started everything. She was in her closet, stressed, overwhelmed, burnt out, with everything she had worked hard for, and still broke down. The house was there. The marriage was there. The kids were there. The pool was there. And none of it was enough. That moment did not break her. It built a movement. Candis is done watching women settle for a version of life that looks good from the outside and feels hollow on the inside, and she is calling everyone to a higher standard. ET picks up where Episode 538 left off, going deeper into what it actually felt like to release the need for control and what changed in his life and his marriage when he finally did. He also brings one of the most tender moments in recent S2S history, talking about going back to heal his mother and realizing she went through everything he blamed her for carrying. Karl's Kalm Down segment delivers one of the most practical frameworks this show has produced. Access and alignment are not the same thing. Just because something good comes to you does not mean it is yours. Make your decisions on alignment, not access. With Jemal away, CJ steps in with a sanctified session and does not hold back. God wants more for you than you want for yourself. Everything you do not have is because you are still operating below the level God designed for you. Stop shrinking. The episode also includes the announcement of ET and CJ's debut book "We Is Greater Than Me," now available for preorder on Amazon, and ET pulls out his GED on camera for the first time, earned February 9th, 1989, out of Lansing, Michigan. The certificate that started everything. If you are a woman who has ever smiled through something that was breaking you, Candis is building something for you. If you have ever felt like your life looks right but something is still off, this table sees you.
