Först sänd 2019-08-20.Om jag säger riddarroman, vad får du då upp för bild i huvudet? Är det Jan Guillous ”Arn” som rider mot solnedgången i det Heliga landet eller kanske Don Quijote som guppar fram på den lunkande Rosinante? För de flesta är det nog ingen romangestalt överhuvudtaget som framträder, utan något ur filmatiseringen av Sir Walter Scotts ”Ivanhoe” eller rent av en grotesk scen ur Monty Python and the Holy Grail.Allt jag nämnt har dock tillkommit långt efter riddarromanens gyllene tidsålder. Till och med renässansförfattaren Cervantes kommer för sent, även om hans hjälte förläst sig på just riddarromaner. Faktum är att det som ibland beskrivs som Sveriges första skönlitterära verk tillhör denna genre och genom att lära oss något om dess tillkomst lär vi oss också något avgörande om vår kulturhistoria.Egentligen handlar det om tre riddarromaner av tämligen skiftande karaktär, som tillsammans går under namnet Eufemiavisorna. Berättelserna, som i sin samtid lästs högt och framförts vid festmåltider för en aristokratisk publik, har alla kontinentaleuropeiska förlagor som översatts till fornsvensk knittelvers under ett tiotal år vid 1300-talets början.Fröet till denna kulturgärning såddes i Norge där den tyskättade drottningen Eufemia (c. 1280–1312), vars dotter var trolovad med den svenska kungabrodern hertig Erik Magnusson, tog initiativet till översättningen. I Norge hade liknande projekt en lång historia. Trots att kunskapen om detaljerna i Eufemias liv är bristfällig, känner vi henne bättre än den eller de personer som genomförde själva översättningsarbetet. Idag är en översättare nästan alltid en enskild person. Medeltida översättningar kunde vara omfattande projekt som utfördes av ett arbetslag, där olika personer stod för skilda språkliga kompetenser. Historiker, litteraturvetare och språkforskare som sysslat med de här texterna har trots det misstänkt att det rör sig om enskilda översättare – det är helt enkelt svårt att föreställa sig mer än ett fåtal individer i Sverige vid den här tiden hade kompetensen. Dessutom har nyare forskning visat att översättningarna inte alls – som man tidigare antagit – är särskilt klumpiga eller osofistikerade- Den fornsvenska diktaren hade en fullgod uppfattning om sin ursprungstext.Översättningarna bygger på flera förlagor på franska, tyska och fornvästnordiska och åtminstone två av berättelserna – Ivan lejonriddaren och Flores och Blanzeflor – var omåttligt populära i det medeltida Europa. Verken med bakgrund i Kung Arthur-legenden och i korsriddartematik spreds, kopierades och reviderades, alltifrån 1100-talet till 1400-talet, från det perifera Island i norr till det mångkulturella Spanien i söder, från England i väst till Grekland i öst. Vi känner till en mängd versioner av Floire et Blanchefleur, ursprungligen en fransk kärleksdikt, och av Chrétien de Troyes' Yvan, le chevalier au lion, som inte alltid är regelrätta översättningar utan snarare omdiktningar.Denna korta bakgrund visar tydligt hur den första underhållningslitteraturen på svenska är oupplösligt förenad med den europeiska litteraturen i gemen, och med de övriga europeiska folkspråken. Det hänger tveklöst samman med att den svenska eliten under 1200- och 1300-talet hade ambitionen att utmåla sig som en del av den kristna europeiska riddarklassen, med samma ideal, uppförandekoder, intressen och attribut. Det är själva motsatsen till allt tal om Brexit och Swexit. När svenskarna går från vikingatid till medeltid – genom kristnandet och inlemmandet av Skandinavien i en europeisk gemenskap – går det relativt snabbt; det finns en vilja till förändring.Man kan ifrågasätta hur de svenska frälsemännen stod sig gentemot sina kontinentaleuropeiska motsvarigheter ifråga om ekonomiska resurser – gods, borgar, rustningar, vapen – men faktum är att det statsbärande skiktet var väl bekant med tyska riddare, som var vanligt förekommande vid de nordiska furstehoven, och bör ha haft god förtrogenhet med den litteratur och andra kulturella koder som dessa uppskattade. Vid den här tiden studerade svenskar vid utländska universitet, och man hade börjat med riddardubbningar i Sverige. De skedde vid högtidliga sammankomster, såsom kröningar eller bröllop inom kungafamiljen. Den första riddardubbningen vi känner till som involverar svenska frälsemän ägde rum 1285, och denna praktik fortgick till 1497, då Sten Sture d.y. dubbades av unionskungen Hans. Det här visar hur länge riddaridealen hade åtminstone en symbolisk betydelse.Möjligen är det den internationella bakgrunden som gör att Eufemiavisorna är förhållandevis okända bland allmänheten – de passar inte in i ett nationalistiskt narrativ, det är ingen ursvensk litteratur. Läser vi alls någon nordisk medeltidslitteratur i skolan nuförtiden är det de isländska sagorna som får agera representanter för perioden.Kanske har det blivit dags att ändra på det. Numera finns en utgåva av Eufemiavisorna på det som professor Henrik Williams, ansvarig för bearbetningen, kallar en ”sen fornsvenska”. Där har många ingrepp gjorts, fast med lätt hand, i syfte att göra verken så läsbara som möjligt utan att ”översätta” texterna till nusvenska.Men hur skiljer sig de svenska versionerna från sina europeiska förlagor? Den trånande höviska kärleken verkar ha varit främmande för medeltidens svenskar och den får ofta stå tillbaka för utförligare skildringar av strider och envig mellan den ridderlige hjälten och hans motståndare. Men den höviska kärleken är främmande också idag. Den genusideologi som kommer till uttryck i riddarromanerna hyllar exklusivt manliga miljöer, marginaliserar kvinnor och tillerkänner dem sällan agens. I Hertig Fredrik av Normandie vinner titelns hjälte sitt hjärtas dam genom att ta sig in i hennes kammare med hjälp av en osynlighetsring. Att han förgriper sig på henne och därmed vinner hennes kärlek är en normalisering av sexuellt våld och frånstötande för en modern läsare.Just kring de här frågorna har forskarna börjat fundera mera. För genom att verken har anpassats till den tilltänkta publikens intressen bör de avspegla det svenska frälsets angelägenheter, eller åtminstone måla upp ett slags idealbild som tycktes både eftertraktansvärd och uppnåelig. Det är inte bara nöjeslitteratur och spännande äventyrsberättelser; berättelserna ger också uttryck för medvetna eller omedvetna föreställningar om det ideala samhällslivet, om sociala strukturer, makt samt genusideal.Om man antar att genren riddarroman motsvarar en särskild social ordning, så vågar jag påstå att den svenska integrationen i det medeltida kristna västeuropeiska sammanhanget inte var fullbordad förrän Sverige fick sin egen riddarlitteratur. Att det var en betydelsefull händelse råder det ingen tvekan om. Under senmedeltiden fortsatte Eufemiavisorna att kopieras i nya handskrifter och med boktryckarkonsten blev det en av storsäljarna. At the court of a French princess in the middle of the 12th century, an obscure poet named Chrétien de Troyes would begin to write and distribute fanciful stories of the Knights of the Round Table. In doing so, he would propel the figure of King Arthur to an unforeseen level of fame and create the medium of fiction as we know it. Following the previous discussion of earlier lore surrounding Arthur, and his potential historic basis, this episode of Gladio Free Europe explores the literary development and legacy of the Arthurian Romance. Liam and Russian Sam pick up with the release of Britain's first bestseller, Geoffrey of Monmouth's fanciful Homeric pseudo-history, Historia Regnum Britanniae. As this book and its account of King Arthur spread across Europe, many derivative texts would be composed in prose and verse, sometimes elaborating further on King Arthur and his court. During the reign of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, whose vast territories included England and half of France, the brilliant court poet Chrétien de Troyes would synthesize the matter previously chronicled by Geoffrey and his predecessors with the poetic and heroic traditions of France. In Chrétien's five Arthurian stories, the tone and themes of the older Song of Roland would be applied to the deeds of Arthur and his knights to create a genre of literature entirely its own. The works of Chrétien and his followers would illustrate the chivalric values idealized by the aristocrats of the high and late Middle Ages. King Arthur's knights are valiant fighters, but also passionate lovers, merciful Christians, and fully-realized humans, exhibiting an interiority not seen in any European literature since classical antiquity. The chivalric romance would spread out of the French-speaking courts of England and France into popular circles across Europe, leaving a mark on the literature of Norway, Italy, Islamic Andalusia, and the Jewish diaspora. Chivalric romance, and Arthurian stories in particular, would become Europe's first tradition of popular fiction and remain eminently popular until the end of the chivalric age itself. These stories were read not only for entertainment, but also for moral instruction. For good or ill, chivalric ideals such as courtly love and the knightly quest would impact the real behavior of the medieval warrior elite.  By the later Middle Ages, Arthurian stories would become more solemn and meditative, particular in Arthur's own land of Britain. After the carnage of the Wars of the Roses, a knight and prisoner named Thomas Malory would compose Le Morte Darthur, a sprawling biography that would become the most famous Arthurian work of all time. Written without any of the whit and whimsy as earlier French stories, this text would effectively conclude the chivalric romance tradition and define the legacy of King Arthur for centuries. Following a long period of neglect, artists and aesthetes in the Victorian age began to reappraise the works and values of the Middle Ages, with particular attention to the mournful chronicle of Thomas Malory. Writers such as Walter Scott and Alfred Tennyson would create new works in the chivalric tradition. Arthurian and medieval scenes would be of sudden interest to the painters of the 19th century, in particular the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood that included John William Waterhouse. This Victorian medievalism took many forms, and was at times associates with earnest progressive politics as well as deeply reactionary yearning for an imagined period of innocent morality and unquestioned hierarchy. Although Chrétien may not be a household name (unless your household is the French royal court) his contributions are everywhere. In all popular division, but in particular the modern genre of medieval fantasy, the images and themes first popularized by Chrétien de Troyes would rise again, as was prophesied of King Arthur himself.

En 2016, Sophie Lionnet, une jeune française de 21 ans originaire de Troyes, part à Londres. Elle travaille comme jeune fille au pair chez Sabrina Kouider et Ouissem Medouni, dans le quartier de Southfields. Au départ, tout semble prometteur. Une famille accueillante, deux enfants à garder et une première expérience à l'étranger. Cependant, la situation se dégrade rapidement. Sophie effectue toutes les tâches ménagères et est très épuisée. Progressivement, ses nouvelles se font de plus en plus rares. Pourtant, elle rassure toujours ses proches. Elle ne veut pas les inquiéter. Or, Sophie n'est jamais payée. Pire encore, elle reçoit des claques. Elle subit des humiliations quotidiennes. Elle aurait pu partir à tout moment. Mais elle ne le fait pas. Elle est prisonnière d'un engrenage psychologique. En effet, Sabrina Kouider souffre de troubles paranoïaques sévères. Elle accuse Sophie d'avoir exposé ses enfants à des abus. Ces accusations sont totalement imaginaires. Sous cette maltraitance constante, Sophie devient de plus en plus amaigrie. Elle s'affaiblit. Et puis, un jour, ils la noient pour la punir. Elle meurt noyée sous la torture. Le 20 septembre 2017, les voisins alertent les pompiers car ils sentent une odeur nauséabonde. Les secours découvrent alors le corps carbonisé de Sophie sur un barbecue. Sabrina Kouider et Ouissem Medouni sont tout de suite reconnus coupables de meurtre. Ningún objeto ha inspirado tanta literatura como el santo grial, una copa cuya existencia nunca se ha podido documentar. La imprecisión acerca de qué es, dónde está y si alguna vez existió es seguramente su mayor fortaleza, porque una reliquia bien localizada se convierte en pieza de museo. El grial, en cambio, permanece siempre a un día de camino. Su historia es en realidad la de quienes lo buscaron. Monjes cistercienses, cruzados, ocultistas, arqueólogos de Himmler, guionistas y novelistas proyectaron sobre él lo que cada época necesitaba encontrar, y por eso sigue vivo cuando otras reliquias medievales duermen en polvorientas vitrinas. El objeto en sí aparece en el evangelio de forma muy fugaz. Los evangelios sinópticos cuentan que Jesús tomó el cáliz en la última cena, lo bendijo y lo repartió entre sus discípulos, luego desaparece de la historia. El punto de partida de los buscadores del grial es José de Arimatea, el hombre que pidió a Pilato el cuerpo de Cristo y le enterró en una tumba de su propiedad. Los evangelios apócrifos dieron mucha más importancia a José de Arimatea, que luego se convirtió en un viajero cargado de reliquias. La asociación entre José de Arimatea y un recipiente donde se habría recogido la sangre de Cristo en la cruz no cuaja hasta finales del siglo XII, cuando el borgoñón Robert de Boron cristianiza el objeto. Antes de él el grial existía, pero todavía no era santo. El primero en ponerle nombre fue Chrétien de Troyes en 1180 en su inacabado “Perceval o el Cuento del Grial”. Un joven galés llega al castillo de un rey herido y presencia una procesión en la que una doncella lleva un grial, palabra que en francés antiguo designaba una fuente honda para servir alimentos. Perceval calla, no pregunta a quién sirve aquello, y esa cortesía mal entendida condena al rey y a su tierra. Chrétien murió sin resolver el enigma. Robert de Boron lo identificó más tarde con el cáliz eucarístico, luego sustituyeron a Perceval por Galahad y la aventura original se transformó en alegoría mística. No mucho más tarde un alemán, Wolfram von Eschenbach, hizo del Grial una piedra con propiedades mágicas, el “lapsit exillis”, que custodian unos caballeros, los “Templeisen” en un castillo. Es aquí donde entran los templarios en la leyenda. El hecho es que, a finales del siglo XIII, había ya cuatro griales, pero eran muy diferentes. De esa multiplicidad nacen las lecturas posteriores. La eucarística traduce la misa al lenguaje de la caballería. La sanguínea convierte la vajilla en relicario. La dinástica, que imagina una descendencia carnal de Jesús protegida por sociedades secretas, no aparece hasta el siglo pasado. La lectura interior entiende la búsqueda del grial como un itinerario individual del alma. Lo que si tenemos son santos griales físicos en distintas partes de Europa. El más famoso de todos es el Santo Cáliz que se conserva en la catedral de Valencia, hay otro más en la basílica de San Isidoro de León, otro en Galicia, otro en Gales, otro en Viena y otro más en la catedral de Génova, estos dos últimos son platos, no copas. Hoy son piezas de museo muy valoradas, pero eso no es inconveniente para que los modernos buscadores del grial sigan apostando por unas o por otras. This is part three of a ten-part podcast series documenting the European Industrial Hemp Association's 23rd Annual Conference in Poznan, Poland, at the Institute of Fiber Plants and Medicinal Medicine, June 10-12. Estelle Delangle, director of the Hemp European Hub in Troyes, France, frames the hemp challenge differently than most: The material isn't the problem, the world is. "The world is not ready for hemp. Today, when you use hemp in textile, for example, you have to make it look like something else. You have to make it look like cotton. You have to make it look like wool. You have to make it look like linen or flax," she said. Delangle has spent six years building the Hemp European Hub — a cooperative company that coordinates complex, cross-sector projects across Europe and beyond. The Hub isn't a traditional industry cluster or a government agency. It's a working laboratory for what Delangle calls "cooperative bioeconomy applied to hemp." The European hemp model, she explains, rests on three pillars: farmers who built their own markets and machines; price stability that makes the sector resilient; and whole-plant utilization — fiber for textiles, grain for food, hurd for bedding and leaves for extraction. No waste. "We are trying to do at the hub is to act stone by stone on those socio-technical obstacles," Delangle said, describing her approach to regulatory change, consumer perception and cross-sector cooperation. "Time is key. You don't change the world overnight." The Hub hosts the World Hemp Forum every two years in Troyes, drawing 300 participants from around the world. Full Text of Readings Saturday of the Eighth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 352 The Saint of the day is Saint Joan of Arc Saint Joan of Arc's Story Burned at the stake as a heretic after a politically-motivated trial, Joan was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920. Born of a fairly well-to-do peasant couple in Domremy-Greux southeast of Paris, Joan was only 12 when she experienced a vision and heard voices that she later identified as Saints Michael the Archangel, Catherine of Alexandria, and Margaret of Antioch. During the Hundred Years War, Joan led French troops against the English and recaptured the cities of Orléans and Troyes. This enabled Charles VII to be crowned as king in Reims in 1429. Captured near Compiegne the following year, Joan was sold to the English and placed on trial for heresy and witchcraft. Professors at the University of Paris supported Bishop Pierre Cauchon of Beauvis, the judge at her trial; Cardinal Henry Beaufort of Winchester, England, participated in the questioning of Joan in prison. In the end, she was condemned for wearing men's clothes. The English resented France's military success–to which Joan contributed. On this day in 1431, Joan was burned at the stake in Rouen, and her ashes were scattered in the Seine River. A second Church trial 25 years later nullified the earlier verdict, which was reached under political pressure. Remembered by most people for her military exploits, Joan had a great love for the sacraments, which strengthened her compassion toward the poor. Popular devotion to her increased greatly in 19th-century France and later among French soldiers during World War I. Theologian George Tavard writes that her life “offers a perfect example of the conjunction of contemplation and action” because her spiritual insight is that there should be a “unity of heaven and earth.” Joan of Arc has been the subject of many books, plays, operas and movies. Reflection “Joan of Arc is like a shooting star across the landscape of French and English history, amid the stories of the Church's saints and into our consciousness. Women identify with her; men admire her courage. She challenges us in fundamental ways. Umay Acar-Sümer |Writer and Composer of ‘Beowulf the MusicalBio:Umay Acar-Sümer is a Turkish singer and composer based in Hampshire, UK. Having completed an MA in Medieval Studies and MMus in Music Composition at Royal Holloway, Umay draws inspiration from medieval literature and history in her writing. She is the writer and composer of ‘Beowulf the Musical', a two-act musical made up of 35 song based on the medieval epic poem Beowulf. ‘Beowulf the Musical' premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2024 with Umay playing the role of Freawaru; the musical is now set to release an album with many of the original cast and orchestra members reprising their roles. Umay's writing influences include late medieval authors like Geoffrey Chaucer, Sir Thomas Malory and Chrétien de Troyes as well as anonymous poems from the Anglo-Saxon period such as The Wanderer, The Battle of Maldon and The Seafarer. Musically she is inspired by contemporary composers such as Alan Menken, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Lin Manuel Miranda and Anais Mitchell as well as the works of Handel, Verdi, Mozart and Strauss. He received his Ph.D. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University and his rabbinic ordination in Israel while studying in Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav Kook. Professor Marty Lockshin 's primary area of scholarly expertise and writing is the history of Jewish biblical interpretation, particularly the interplay between tradition and innovation. Most of his research has been centred on those medieval biblical commentators who valued tradition intellectually, who lived traditional lives and who still innovated unabashedly in their understanding of the Bible. The largest part of his scholarship has been about Samuel ben Meir (12th century Northern France), a traditionalist Bible commentator with an uncanny knack for offering new understandings of biblical texts—his conclusions are often strikingly similar to the “discoveries” of biblical critics seven or eight hundred years later. Marty has published a 4-volume English annotated translation of Rashbam's major work and also a 2-volume annotated Hebrew edition. His interest in biblical interpretation has led him to study Jewish-Christian relations, since Jews and Christians over the ages had both competitive and (at times) cooperative approaches to the study of their sacred Scripture.

Full Text of Readings The Saint of the day is Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys' Story “God closes a door and then opens a window,” people sometimes say when dealing with their own disappointment or someone else's. That was certainly true in Marguerite's case. Children from European as well as Native American backgrounds in 17th-century Canada benefited from her great zeal and unshakable trust in God's providence. Born the sixth of 12 children in Troyes, France, Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys at the age of 20 believed that she was called to religious life. Her applications to the Carmelites and Poor Clares were unsuccessful. A priest friend suggested that perhaps God had other plans for her. In 1654, the governor of the French settlement in Canada visited his sister, an Augustinian canoness in Troyes. Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys belonged to a sodality connected to that convent. The governor invited her to come to Canada and start a school in Ville-Marie (eventually the city of Montreal). When she arrived, the colony numbered 200 people with a hospital and a Jesuit mission chapel. Soon after starting a school, she realized her need for coworkers. Returning to Troyes, she recruited a friend, Catherine Crolo, and two other young women. In 1667, they added classes at their school for Indian children. A second trip to France three years later resulted in six more young women and a letter from King Louis XIV, authorizing the school. The Congregation of Notre Dame was established in 1676 but its members did not make formal religious profession until 1698 when their Rule and constitutions were approved. Saint Marguerite Bourgeoys established a school for Indian girls in Montreal. At the age of 69, she walked from Montreal to Quebec in response to the bishop's request to establish a community of her sisters in that city. By the time she died, she was referred to as the “Mother of the Colony.” Marguerite was canonized in 1982. Reflection It's easy to become discouraged when plans that we think that God must endorse are frustrated. Marguerite was called not to be a cloistered nun but to be a foundress and an educator. From Shakespeare's 'band of brothers' speech to its appearances in numerous films, Agincourt rightfully has a place among a handful of conflicts whose names are immediately recognized around the world. The Battle of Agincourt, fought in 1415, is famous for the decisive role of the English and Welsh longbowmen, who—despite being significantly outnumbered and exhausted—decimated the heavily armored French nobility with volleys of arrows. This unlikely victory was profoundly important because it not only paved the way for King Henry V to be named heir to the French throne via the Treaty of Troyes, but it also demonstrated the waning dominance of the medieval knight in warfare.Today’s guest is Michael Livingston, author of “Agincourt: Battle of the Scarred King.” We go back to the original sources, including the French battle plan that still survives today, to give a new interpretation, one that challenges the traditional site of the battlefield itself.
