Episode SummaryErin and Rachel discuss Ratatouille (2007), a Pixar film about a French rat who wants to be a chef. Unfortunately, we can't guess how long some of the ads are, so we are going to give you approximate times on when things are happening on the show. We will continue to look for solutions and appreciate you hanging in there with us. We got in some family game time over the holidays and we share our experiences. I got in some heavier games with Risk AD 2210 and Catan, New Energies, while Marty enjoyed leisure time with the family. Very happy with Risk because I went into the game with concerns. Thought for sure that this game would be just another version of Risk with little added pieces here and there. But it wasn't. Yes, it did come down to dice rolls, but that is Risk you take in this game. Unfortunately, many of the games we discussed are out of stock at Miniature Market. This is where their notification system on restock works really well, so be sure to take advantage on something you may want. Cons are starting up and the next time we are back, we will be discussing Dice and Diversion down in Atlanta, GA. Man, just hope it is going to be warmer this year. Learn more about your ad choices. We pick up with the Pardon Power in the Constitution and consider the term "Christian Nationalism" from a Christianity as Ethnicity perspective. NB: Ethnicity is not race or color/appearance in this usage of the term. Ethnos, the Greek word used in Matthew 28's "Great Commission," contemplates ethnicity as its used here, as "nation" or people bound together by kinship, heritage, tradition, no matter what they look like, for adoption is very old in the Judeo-Christian tradition (think of for example Ruth, or the language of adoption in the New Testament). Application to American Politics and Public Law are sprinkled throughout. This is a Christmas season series on The Republican Professor podcast.
In this episode, Dr. Kathryn (Kate) Graber and doctoral student Ariana Gunderson interview linguistic anthropologist Jillian Cavanaugh about all things language and value. Much of Dr. Cavanaugh's research in Bergamo, Italy, summarized here, has been on the political economy of code choice–that is, why people choose the ways of speaking they do, whether to access economic opportunities or to have a language of regional belonging, intimacy, and home. Turning to questions of authenticity and materiality, Dr. Cavanaugh discusses how to approach language not only as an expressive system but also as an embodied, material practice. We talk about how food gains value through the different kinds of linguistic labor that are undertaken in its production and ask whether language and food are analogous semiotic systems (spoiler alert: not quite). Thinking about her current work with small-scale, hyper-local sausage producers, Jillian discusses the roles of individual choice and consumption, and/versus the role of production in the construction of value. At the end, we talk about intersections between linguistic and economic anthropology in Jillian's role as President-Elect of the Society for Linguistic Anthropology (SLA). Jillian R. Cavanaugh is a linguistic anthropologist whose research, centered in northern Italy, has considered language shift and social transformation, value, language ideologies, materiality, gender, and heritage food. Her current research focuses on heritage food producers and the labor they undertake to make good, safe, and valuable food. She is interested in how people use the semiotic and material resources available to them to make sense of their pasts in order to live in the present and envision their futures. Her publications include Living Memory: The Social Aesthetics of Language in a Northern Italian Town (Wiley-Blackwell 2009) and Language and Materiality: Ethnographic and Theoretical Explorations (Cambridge University Press 2017, co-edited with Shalini Shankar). Her work has been published in American Anthropologist, the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology, and Ethnos, among other venues. She received her PhD in anthropology at New York University and is Professor of Anthropology at Brooklyn College and the Graduate Center CUNY. Publisher Bitewing Games has a thing for designer Reiner Knizia (most recently with Zoo Vadis and the Mythos Collection's Illiad and Ichor). Now they're back at it with a new three-part, big-box, Knizia-palooza Kickstarter campaign. We had the opportunity to play one of those parts, SILOS (Secret Interlopers from Outer Space), a retro sci-fi (with cows!) rethemed version of Municipium...and we instantly fell in love. So we invited Bitewing founders Nick Murray and Kyle Spackman to chat about SILOS, other great area-control games, and board game series and franchises. Timeline: 3:25 - Going Analog's game pick: Magic Maze Tower. 11:22 - Bitewing's game pick: Moonrollers. 19:48 - Going Analog's topic: SILOS and other great area-control games. 47:57 - Bitewing's topic: gaming series and franchies.

This episode focuses on a cluster of issues of longstanding significance in Southeast Asia and in Southeast Asian Studies – plantation agriculture, global commodity chains or supply chains, exploitation of labour and environmental degradation, and resistance. To discuss these issues, we are joined by Dr. Alyssa Paredes, an environmental and economic anthropologist who is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Paredes received her PhD in Anthropology (with distinction) from Yale University in 2020. Her work has been published in a variety of journals, including Antipode, Ethnos, Gastronomica, and the Journal of Political Ecology. She is a contributor to the edited volume Multispecies Justice and the Feral Atlas website, and she is co-editor of Halo-Halo Ecologies: The Emergent Environments Behind Filipino Food, forthcoming with the University of Hawai'i Press in April 2025. On today's program,, Christian ministries are on the forefront of relief efforts as cities in Western North Carolina grapple with loss after Hurricane Helene. We'll take a look. And, a Georgia congregation locked out of their own building after splitting from its parent church. We'll have details. Plus, the missions organization Ethnos 360 faces a lawsuit after a victim alleges that another missionary child abused her…and the ministry is continuing to allow the perpetrator access to other children. But first, the United Kingdom has launched an investigation into Barnabas Aid. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Kim Roberts, Bob Smietana, Tony Mator, Brittany Smith—and you, Warren. Until next time, may God bless you. MANUSCRIPT FIRST SEGMENT Warren: Hello everybody. I'm Warren Smith, coming to you from Charlotte, North Carolina. Christina: And I'm Christina Darnell, in for Natasha Cowden, also coming to you from Charlotte, North Carolina. And we'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Warren: On today's program, Christian ministries are on the forefront of relief efforts as cities in Western North Carolina grapple with loss after Hurricane Helene. We'll take a look. And, a Georgia congregation locked out of their own building after splitting from its parent church. We'll have details. Plus, the missions organization Ethnos360 faces a lawsuit after a victim alleges that another missionary child abused her…and the ministry is continuing to allow the perpetrator access to other children. Christina: But first, the United Kingdom has launched an investigation into Barnabas Aid. Warren: Barnabas Aid — also known as Barnabas Fund, which aids persecuted Christians — is being investigated by the Charity Commission in the United Kingdom. On Sept. 17, the commission opened a statutory inquiry into the ministry based on allegations of a “£15m ($20 million) hole in the finances of its global network,” Christina: Additionally, Barnabas Aid is almost three months late in filing its latest financial accounts, according to the Charity Commission's website. Warren: In August, Patrick Sookdheo, founder of Barnabas Aid, was suspended from his role in the organization due to concerns about financial mismanagement and a toxic work culture. Noel Frost served as chief executive of the international organization, according to the Church Times. He also was removed from his position earlier this year due to allegations of misconduct and financial impropriety. A Barnabas spokesperson told The Telegraph the investigation is ongoing, and “if it reveals that there has been any financial wrongdoing, then we are committed to recovering it.” Christina: Barnabas Aid has offices in several countries, including the United States, and also has an international office called Nexcus International. Warren: Nexcus was previously called Christian Relief International (CRI), but the name was changed to enable Barnabas Aid to “provide aid to countries where Christianity is prohibited,” according to Barnabas Aid USA CEO Jeremy Frith. A letter dated August 14 by self-described interim international chief executive of Nexcus, Colin Bloom, said an independent investigation has found “serious and repeated contraventions of internal policies” and had brought “evidence of serious financial impropriety” to light. According to the Barnabas Aid website, Nexcus (formerly CRI) serves as the international office for all Barnabas Aid ministries worldwide. Nexcus is registered in the US, but has an office in the UK. Christina: Our next story hits close to home for us, Warren. In North Carolina, our neighbors to the west of Charlotte are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene,

Coffee roasters serve as behind-the-scenes laborers in the coffee industry. We may not see nor speak with them directly as often as we do baristas, but a lot ride on their craft, decisions, and know-how. Let this episode be a reminder of the invaluable skills that coffee roasters bring to the industry. The coffee industry (especially specialty) is often veil-covered and full of walled gardens - let's do what we can to change that. On Growing Up Fundie, Ep. 114: Tim Mills of @HarmonicAtheist doesn't skirt around my tougher questions, and delivers his thoughts in his signature, straightforward manner. Father of four, Tim Mills, placed his faith in Jesus, and church ministry from a young age. As a child, he took pride in memorizing thousands of Bible verses, and listening to the sermons of famous Evangelical pastors on the radio with his parents. After being homeschooled throughout his youth, Tim attended the now-infamous Bob Jones University (in SC) and Lancaster Bible College (in PA) for his undergrad. He also attended New Tribes Mission Institute (currently Ethnos 360), for one year, to prepare for a career in tribal evangelism and church planting. After getting sidelined by severe insomnia, Tim shifted to "secular" work, including being a customer cabinetmaker, a stock broker, a fraud analyst, and a social media manager, before transitioning this year to being a full-time YouTuber. He began his deconstruction journey in 2016, and had fully deconverted by the Fall of 2019. Through his YouTube channel,"Harmonic Atheist," Tim posts content in an effort to help his audience remove themselves from mythology-based worldviews, heal from religious trauma, and empower themselves to share their own personal stories.Checkout his episode of “Growing Up Fundie,” then find more of his content via the links below:Tim on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HarmonicAtheist/videosTim'd Linktree: https://linktr.ee/harmonicatheist______________________________________Find this episode, and others here:Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/2EHJGf8kGbSV9SRbqsfYKSApple Podcasts:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/growing-up-fundie/id1602008078Amazon Music:https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/ad6ac91e-c2fb-47d6-8658-df8aed941eac/growing-up-fundieSupport us on Buzzsprout Subscriptions:https://www.buzzsprout.com/1908164/supporters/newSupport us on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/sydneydavisjrjrYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5QuI5etVfbJoTVAhbRGMkADiscord:https://discord.gg/XQNG4nD5Join us on Reddit on r/GrowingUpFundie: https://www.reddit.com/r/GrowingUpFundie/More about the host, Sydney Davis Jr. Jr.sydneydavisjrjr.comThink you might make a great guest, or know someone who would be?Apply for yourself, or nominate someone here:https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeHiy8KYW38tyKUD6MbFmOwCKdeWVHAbIA9qst1RBQf4rRPXg/viewform?usp=share_linkSupport the show

What makes a game replayable? How important is replayability for you? Does it impact your purchasing habits? How many plays of a game do you need to feel like you have received adequate replay value? What types of replayability do you enjoy? What are examples of games that offer excellent replay value? What are some games that offer low replay value that you still love? Are hobby boardgamers overly concerned with replayability in their games or asking for high replayability in their games justified? Game Brain: A Board Game Podcast with Matthew Robinson and his Gaming Group
Now that we've finally notched some in-person plays The Transcontinental and Carnegie, we share our thoughts about what's changed in person versus online. Plus, we talk about the modular game boards that pique our interest and recent plays of Tzolkin, Fresh Fish, and Ethnos.
Many would likely agree that it can be very difficult sometimes to resist the urge to buy the newest expansions, modules, and packs for their favorite games. Because of course the add-ons could only ever make the game better, right? Not all board game expansions are made equal, so this week on the Discussion Phase, we draft some of our favorite expansions. We also review some recent plays of Egizia: Shifting Sands, Middle-Earth SBG, and Ethnos. Make sure to join us on Discord and get in on the discussion with us! https://discord.gg/WKZkT2DDNs
In episode 103, Dean and Jon talk about games they've been playing (Catan, The Godfather: Corleone's Empire, Ca$h n Gun$, Ethnos, Camel Up, The Quest for El Dorado). They also discuss their thoughts on the Spiel des Jahres nominations for this year. Thanks for coming down to MeepleTown! If you enjoy our podcast, please consider rating us.
