Working by candlelight, we carefully stepped between endless shelves of books, books whose vivid imagination and terrible thoughts had become real and had entered our world. There were giant kraken, the frightful Fenrir and other monsters, as well as infamous characters, such as Count Dracula or Grendel's Mother, prowling in the shadows. However, luckily, wonderful women, such as Marie Curie, Anne of Green Gables and even Red Riding Hood, had also come to life. With the help of these powerful heroines, we could finally catch those creatures that were Loose in the Library by Mill Goble and Jessica Metheringham from Dissent Games with art by Samantha Grieve and Jessica Metheringham.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/09/06/loose-in-the-library-saturday-review/Useful LinksLoose in the Library: https://dissentgames.com/litl/Kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dissentgames/loose-in-the-libraryDissent Games: https://dissentgames.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/431171/loose-in-the-libraryLibrary Labyrinth review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/02/26/library-labyrinth-saturday-review/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Halloween Atmosphere 2018 (endless loop) by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/3236-halloween-atmosphere-2018-endless-loopMusic: Dreamsphere 4 by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/199-dreamsphere-4SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

There is something fascinating about making things up that could never exist. The mind wanders. Ideas that go against all logic are conjured up. Taken to the edge of existence, to a time when everything ceases to exist, it creates a sense of weird foreboding. Ultimately, we all know that there is no escaping the grand finale. All we can do is watch the Doomlings: Imaginary Ends by Justus Meyer and Andrew Meyer from Doomlings.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/08/30/doomlings-imaginary-ends-saturday-review/Useful LinksDoomlings: Imaginary Ends: https://www.doomlings.com/products/imaginary-endsVideo: https://youtu.be/pUb6-KryCNY?si=9Aq-6wiMS834pJG0Doomlings: https://doomlings.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/424143/doomlings-imaginary-endsDoomlings review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/06/01/doomlings-saturday-review/Doomlings: Upgrade Pack review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/11/23/doomlings-upgrade-pack-saturday-review/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Blockbuster Atmosphere 1 (Calm) by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/128-blockbuster-atmosphere-1-calmMusic: Float Away (instrumental) by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/300-float-away-instrumentalMusic: Flying Angels by Sascha EndeLink: https://ende.app/en/song/2934-flying-angelsSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

It started as a thought experiment, sealed away from the certainty of observation. We sat at the table, hands of cards like particles suspended in probability. No suit existed until declared, collapsing the wave of potential into a single, immutable state. Every choice rewrote the shape of the universe we shared, while paradoxes loomed like black holes at the edge of play. The research board became our map of reality, and each token placed was another observation that could never be undone. In the end, all possibilities resolved into one truth, and what we finally observed was a Cat in the Box by Muneyuki Yokouchi from Bézier Games with art by Osamu Inoue.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/08/23/cat-in-the-box-digital-eyes/Useful LinksCat in the Box: https://beziergames.com/products/cat-in-the-box-deluxe-editionRulebook: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0740/4855/files/CATX_English_Online_Rules.pdf?v=1646343073Rules video: https://youtu.be/oZFK8iQZKTg?si=NaRTCzRvQem_ho5YBézier Games: https://beziergames.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/345972/cat-in-the-box-deluxe-editionTricky tricks – trick-taking and other games article: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/10/18/tricky-tricks-trick-taking-and-other-games-topic-discussion/Trick-Taking it to the Next Level – my fascination with trick-taking games article: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2023/12/12/trick-taking-it-to-the-next-level-my-fascination-with-trick-taking-games-topic-discussion/Twist Taking – trick-taking games with a twist article: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/04/23/twist-taking-trick-taking-games-with-a-twist-topic-discussion/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: Fission by Ludwig GöranssonMusic by https://www.bensound.comLicense code: PQETYDVIU379UKVEArtist: : Benjamin TissotSupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/(Photo courtesy of Bézier Games)

In episode 37, we review Patchwork and A Feast for Odin in Polyominoes Part 1! First, we chat about what is bringing us joy: Sea Salt & Paper: Extra Pepper, Ptolemy, the Board Game Community speaking out, and Brightcast.Patchwork and A Feast for Odin are both Uwe Rosenberg games, and they differ quite a bit in their complexity (1.60/5 and 3.86/5, respectively, on BGG.) Patchwork is a 2-player game in which players are attempting to complete a quilt - or get as much done as they can.  A Feast for Odin plays 1-4 players, and it is a saga in which players seek to make their viking clan prosper. Why are we discussing these two games together and including such a beefy game in Polyominoes Part 1? Interestingly, Patchwork came from the design process of A Feast for Odin as Uwe explored income from covering up spaces and printing the cost on the tiles (check out “An Interview with Uwe Rosenberg” by Lest My Opinions go Unheard to learn more!) They're also the only two Uwe polyominoes all four of us have played together. We all love a polyomino game, and we're very excited to finally be kicking off this sporadic series with two solid games.Get to know us @ https://lnk.bio/BoardGameHomies 00:53 - Ptolemy03:11 - Sea Salt & Paper: Extra Pepper (with a tangent on Alpine Spice [not a game])08:32 - Board Game Community Speaking Out15:30 - Brightcast18:01 - Patchwork31:60 - A Feast for Odin

It was the first day of our project. It was also the first day on Mars. There were another forty-two days ahead of us, and every day, including today, we were faced with a different mission. These missions were going to get more challenging as we progressed. Our team consisted of a cryptographer, a navigator, a geologist, a mineralogist, a geochemist, a physicist, and even a futurist. So we were hopeful that we would successfully make it through this Mars Expedition: Sol 43 by Sergii Cherkasov and Lina Chykaliuk from Queensell.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/07/12/mars-expedition-sol-43-saturday-review/Useful LinksMars Expedition: Sol 43: https://queensell.com/pages/sol43Queensell: https://queensell.com/BGG listing: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/413868/mars-expedition-sol43Escape Room Puzzles review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/02/01/escape-room-puzzles-saturday-review/EXIT game series: https://store.thamesandkosmos.com/collections/exit-the-gameAdventure Games: The Dungeon review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/06/25/adventure-games-the-dungeon-saturday-review/Suspects review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/04/09/suspects-saturday-review/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)EGLAIR by Alex-Productions | https://onsound.eu/Music promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 3.0 Unported License (CC BY 3.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/deed.en_USIncredulity by Scott Buckley | https://soundcloud.com/scottbuckleyMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons / Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

Josh Wood, designer and developer at AEG, joins the show as I lead him on a tour of my great home state, Wisconsin. Despite my chaotic whims as a tour guide, Josh had some say in the destination choices, “drafting” between one of two locations for our third through sixth stops—with those selections discarding a different set of prepared questions. Fortunately for you, the third member of this trip, you were in for a treat no matter what locations/questions were selected, as Josh's attention to detail, place, movement, stories, art, and experience leave you with a fantastic episode (and awesome games; go check out Josh's games).Josh's: BGG PageInstagramBlueskyLet's Go! To Japan Designer Diary #1…. and #2Pre-timestamp/chapter notes note:As the structure of this a selection between locations that each have their own linked question, these notes won't explicitly spell out “where” we're going or what the question is explicitly, but there will be a high-level idea mentioned. The first two locations were kind of linked to some introductory thoughts, so those will be more normal. Additionally, the travel distances will be posted on the Games Mentioned in this Episode Google Doc (click if you listened, otherwise you'll be spoiled a bit).Show Introduction and the Apostle Islands (0:00)How Josh's background in visual effects has entered his game design mixed in with some stories behind his art/art direction.Spring Green/House on the Rock (10:33)Josh talks about the story behind Let's Go! To Japan and other autobiographical elements of his design. Some of the aforementioned focus on place and theme take place here as well.[Semi-related, but I misspoke and said this was a Frank Lloyd Wright design. While he is a part of the story, he definitely wasn't the person who designed it, as that was Alex Jordan Jr., so look up more of that story because it's pretty interesting.]All That Glitters is not Bronze? In response to Queen Victoria's love of Osborne House, railways were built that ran from Cowes to Newport and from Ryde to Ventnor. As if to underline the significance of the project, two rival companies, the LSWR and LBSC, collaborated to create a train network that was soon hailed as a triumph of public service over profitability and that ran from Ryde to Ventnor, Freshwater to Newport, Cowes to Ryde via Newport, Newport to Sandown and Merstone to Ventnor.
