Episode 579: Narrative Choice or Paragraph Games Episode release date is May 21, 2025 Show Notes Meeple Nation discusses several games that include the narrative or paragraph game mechanic. The Narrative Choice or Paragraph Games mechanic puts a strong emphasis on storytelling and player agency through making decisions that directly influence the narrative's progression. Instead of relying solely on traditional game mechanics like dice rolling or resource management to drive the plot, these games present players with textual descriptions, scenarios, and choices that lead to different outcomes and further narrative branches. Think of it like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book integrated into a board game experience. Players often read paragraphs of text that describe a situation, and then they are presented with a set of choices. Each choice directs them to a different paragraph or section, unfolding the story in a unique way based on their decisions. Here's how the mechanic typically works: Narrative Presentation: The game presents story elements through text, often in the form of cards, books, or even app-based interfaces. These descriptions set the scene, introduce characters, and present challenges. Choice Points: At key moments in the narrative, players are given distinct options on how to proceed. These choices can range from dialogue options and actions to strategic decisions that have narrative consequences. Branching Narrative: Each choice leads to a different part of the story. This might involve reading a specific paragraph number, drawing a particular card, or triggering a new event within the app. The narrative unfolds non-linearly based on the collective decisions of the players. Consequences: The choices players make often have consequences that affect the ongoing narrative. This could involve changes in character relationships, the availability of future options, the acquisition of items, or even the overall outcome of the game. Emergent Storytelling: While the core narrative is pre-written, the combination of player choices leads to a unique emergent story for each playthrough. Different groups of players, or even the same group playing again, will likely experience the narrative in a different sequence and with different outcomes. A condurre?

Deep within the ruins of an ancient Sith temple, Kylo Ren stood with his unstable blade crackling, caught between admiration and resentment, as Darth Vader emerged, his presence suffocating, the air itself recoiling. Then Moff Gideon entered, while Asajj Ventress prowled the edges, twin sabres igniting, her gaze calculating. A metallic rasp followed as General Grievous stepped forward, stolen lightsabres humming in his grasp. Past, present and future - each a force of ambition, none willing to yield. Cultiste e cultisti. Suddenly, you come to. You've woken from a deep dream - or maybe it was a nightmare. You're lying on the cold ground. Your immediate thought is to check for injuries, but you only have some light bruises and scratches. Your memory seems worse though. Everything is a bit muddled. You can't remember where you are or why you are here. You dimly recall the scent of flowers. Yes, that's it. The flowers were what made you come here. They were so beautiful and inviting. But then something changed as the sun set. The exquisite flowers changed. They turned into nightmares, with evil eyes, gnashing teeth and lashing vines. It all started to come back. The evil flowers had been feeding on your energy. Your magic is drained. Yet, you instinctively know that you have to get out of here. Real Life This week, Steven got his hands dirty—literally. Between digging, yard work, and wrestling with a modem that decided to give up on life mid-game, it's been an eventful time. Speaking of games, we dove into City of Mist, where Greg has to decide: is he the "Crusty DM" or simply sporting a "healthy patina of experience"? Devon, meanwhile, is a street shark (but NOT the cartoon kind), Steven's embodying Job (maybe the biblical one?), and Ben's teenage runaway Lily Chow has freed a djinn her parents were up to no good with. Good times, until technology betrayed us. Outside of RPGs, we had a Margaritaville party (because sometimes you just need to lean into the chaos), and we gave Let's Summon Demons a solid 4/5. Meanwhile, Devon tried out Harmonies—a game in the vein of Cascadia—and highly recommends it. If you want to check it out, here's the link: Harmonies on BGG. Oh, and Devon's also been watching Daredevil: Born Again, so we'll probably hear more about that soon. Ben, on the other hand, watched Flow (IMDB), an indie Latvian/French post-apocalyptic film with animals, boats, and a slow but gorgeous vibe. Sci-fi? He says yes. Thrill ride? Not quite, but definitely worth a watch. Future or Now? Ben took a deep dive into his cosmic worldview this week, courtesy of a Substack quiz designed to help pinpoint one's beliefs about reality. Turns out, he hovers somewhere between animism, Gnosticism, and multiverse theory—because why pick just one? He also explored Emergent Materialism, the idea that consciousness and social phenomena are more than the sum of their physical parts, while Steven proudly waved the banner of Reductive Materialism: "We're all just atoms and molecules—deal with it!" Devon, ever the skeptic, leaned into Pragmatic Instrumentalism: “Do we even know what reality is?” And of course, the multiverse debate made an appearance. Do we really buy into it? We debated it all… while channeling our inner Matt Murdock. Steven also brought up some interesting research on how we misinterpret our dogs' emotions. Humans have a habit of projecting their own feelings onto their pets, leading to misunderstandings about what they actually need. Here's the study if you want to check it out. Ben, meanwhile, admitted that his labrador has him trained rather than the other way around—because, let's face it, food is the ultimate motivator. Book Club This week, we discussed To Be Taught, If Fortunate: Votum by Becky Chambers. Topics ranged from chirality and molecular handedness to the ultimate decision-makers in the universe. Steven had thoughts about the book's ending… and let's just say he made sure we all heard them. Repeatedly. Next week, we're diving into three stories by Scott Base: The Giving Man, Scour, and Hell and Back (watch here). If you want to read along, now's your chance! That's it for this episode! Let us know your thoughts, especially if you have strong opinions on RPG archetypes, cosmic worldviews, or whether your dog is secretly running your life. Catch you next time!

dary! And welcome to Episode 99 of The Last Standee Podcast! In this episode, stars align and omens appear as we are about to kiss goodbye to two digits for good! The episode begins as usual, with a Standee Catchup with Fen and Cara, of dogs and humankind so to say. Then we begin with Freedom Five, a Defenders of the Realm game from Greater than Games: Fen does the honors here; fun fact: the game has four expansions and a promo which appear to be engulfed in a time paradox (see BGG stats!). The three of us then continue with two games from Cara's fortnightly game night - Big Shot and Qwirkle - great additions to any collection, if a little aged. To finish up, Alessio talks a bit about Odin (the Norse deity, not the number one in languages with Cyrillic alphabet), the proud winner of As D'Or 2025. And that's about it! See you next episode!
In this interview, fun isn't actually competing, but different types of fun and the way they interact with each other are being examined. As a little thought experiment, which games pop into your head when you think about the thrill of danger? Carl Robinson, designer of the hit game Kelp: Shark vs. Octopus, joins the show to discuss something that has been on his mind for quite some time, and that's the way fun is discussed when examining board games. As a designer of a game that is a whole lot of fun, Carl has some great insights into this matter. And the discussion is well… it's just fun. Hey hey BATT Family! We hope you've taken the time to check out our Kickstarter preview content that we've gotten to release recently, we've been really enjoying playing everything to support some folks. Regardless, on this episode we talk game balance and why it matters, play a game that Mark hated in 2021 and unintentionally played again for this episode, and managed to weirdly cross over on too many things in the other segments. We hope you have a great time with the episode and that you'll let us know what you think about everything by hitting us up! --- This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:01:30 - What's Been on the Table 00:05:10 - Topic of the Week: 00:19:53 - Why Did I Play That: Hardback 00:31:18 - Table / Shelf / Trade 00:50:27 - Rotating Segment: Surprise Party 00:57:21 - Contact Info / Sponsors 00:58:43 - Outro --- Notes! 1) The old fashioneds comment was due to a random Wisconsinite stopping my grandfather during our vacation when he ordered one. I don't particularly care for them, but you better believe I learned how to make them like a master to ingratiate myself to him when Natalie and I started dating. 2) During Hardback, Scott says Single Player Solitaire. He naturally meant Multi-Player Solitaire, but that's the type of stuff you get when you record without scripts. 3) Sorry for needing to use a prop in the explanation of the Marrek Murders, but it was far simpler to have Scott understand while looking at it. If you'd like to see more of what I'm talking about, there's a decent photo someone put up on BGG that'll help you get this. https://boardgamegeek.com/image/8675978/final-girl-the-marrek-murders 4) I know the point that I was trying to make when I clearly get flustered and frustrated (flustrated?) when talking about Dice Throne's complexity, but I do find it funny while editing it that I couldn't even keep a straight thought because I was so annoyed. 5) I didn't mean to take over Scott's Surprise Party entry, but that mostly came out like that in the edit. We were recording late one night and Scott was flagging pretty hard at that point. So I came in with my opinions to keep the conversation moving and see what we could prompt out of him. 6) Apparently this was prop night for me. This is why Scott keeps saying we need to add video. If that does happen, that's more reason of why I need an editor. --- You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. The sun blazes over the wasteland as your tribe fights for survival, its fate tied to three fragile camps and its lifeblood measured in precious drops of water. A single rival warband looms on the horizon, ready to strike. You need to be ready to fight and unleash chaos. Every drop of water spent is a gamble, a step toward victory or ruin.
