greetings and welcome to episode 269. There were some last minute edits to today's episode --- i took a call on-air last night from an agitated individual who took great umbrage at Drake acknowledging Ozzy Osbourne's passing yet having nothing to say about the death of fellow Canadian Bill Exley (Nihilist Spasm Band). Though this caller sounded suspiciously like the same person who used to harangue Rudy Giuliani about the latter's views on ferrets, I can't prove it and besides, he used too much profanity (and I cannot risk East Village Radio losing funding like those NPR stations that only play generic music dumped upon them by record label pluggers). But hey, I am not above staying up all night to re-record the show. This isn't the first time something like this has happened and knowing the sensibilities of the listenership, it probably won't be the last time, either
In this episode of Daily Creative, we dig into the origins and unexpected global impact of the “like button” with business thinker and strategist Martin Reeves, co-author of Like: The Button That Changed the World. Together, we uncover not just the technical and historical story behind one of the internet's most recognizable icons, but also how something so small has fundamentally rewired our ideas about validation, success, identity, and creativity. We explore the messy, iterative invention process behind the like button, dispelling the myth of the “lone genius” and highlighting the chain of small, serendipitous problem-solving moments that led to its creation. Through Martin's research and stories—ranging from ancient Roman gestures to the algorithmic engines of the digital age—we examine how cultural symbols embed themselves in new technologies, how our need for validation can become a trap, and why creative leaders must be wary of chasing applause over substance. Finally, we reflect on how the very tools we invent end up shaping us, for better or worse, and what that means for our own creative paths today, especially as technologies like AI quickly raise similar questions about identity, taste, and agency.Key Learnings from This Episode:External Validation vs. Inner Conviction: When we start creating primarily for immediate recognition and “likes,” we risk losing sight of our core values and true creative voice.Messy Invention, Not Lone Genius: The like button didn't come from a single visionary, but from a series of iterative solutions and small tactical problems—reminding us that progress often happens in unexpected, collaborative ways.Cultural Resonance Matters: The thumbs-up icon succeeded because it was already deeply embedded in culture, making the digital transition intuitive and frictionless for users. The Double-Edged Sword of Instant Feedback: While instant feedback can enhance connection and learning, it also reshapes our tastes, identities, and behavior—sometimes with serious unintended consequences for mental health, social norms, and democracy.Let Curiosity Lead: The most transformative creative breakthroughs often come not from rigid objectives, but from following curiosity and allowing projects to evolve organically.Get full interviews and bonus content for free! Send me a Text Message! There is power in words. We know it because we've been on the receiving side of words that encouraged and words that destroyed. There are times when you've been so impacted by words, that in your heart of hearts you know what Solomon meant when he wrote in Proverbs 15:4, "The tongue the brings healing is a tree of life, but a lie crushes the spirit." Words can hurt. Words can give life. Words can seem to be heaven-sent and words can burn like hell. And sometimes, we just need a button for our mouths! :)
We talk a lot about music as healing. But we don't always talk about how long it can take to even begin that healing. Or how fear can sit in the body like a bruise for years — until something shifts. Until you decide you're ready to tell the truth.Kat Button was supposed to release her first single 17 years ago. But fear is its own kind of delay — one that doesn't always look like resistance. Sometimes it looks like silence. Like waiting for the world to feel safer than it is. Like believing your story is too much to share. Now, she's not only released two back-to-back singles about her mental health journey, but she's on the verge of putting out her debut album, Refocus, a sonic journal of OCD, anxiety, ADHD, low self-worth, therapy, burnout, and hope. Before our conversation, I reflect on “Liability” by Lorde — that devastating, gentle hymn for anyone who's ever been told they're “too much,” and believed it. I've felt that shame in my chest. Kat has too. And yet, here we are — making something beautiful out of the very thing we once tried to hide. This episode holds:* The long pause between wanting to be heard and actually speaking* How intrusive thoughts and diagnoses shaped Kat's music and identity* What it's like to write and release when the wounds are still fresh — and why she's no longer afraid* How she supports young people through anxiety and low self-worth using music* The honest, non-linear story of healing — and what it means to come back to yourselfThis one is for anyone who's been waiting to begin again.About Kat:Kat Button is a songwriter, educator, and advocate for mental health whose music helps make the hard things speakable. Her debut album Refocus (out this fall) is a raw, hopeful collection of songs tracing her journey through OCD, ADHD, and the long road back to self-trust. Hi everyone, and welcome back to The Kara Goldin Show! Today's guest is someone who literally wrote the book on how one tiny-ass button changed the whole damn world. I'm joined by Martin Reeves, Chairman of the BCG Henderson Institute and co-author of LIKE: The Button That Changed the World. You've tapped it. You've chased it. You've felt the dopamine hit. But what's the real story behind the “like” button? In this episode, Martin and I dive deep into the origins of the iconic thumbs-up, how it became the foundation of today's attention economy, and the unexpected ripple effects it's had on business, mental health, and even artificial intelligence. We talk about how this seemingly simple feature changed the way we measure validation, shaped entire industries, and taught us what not to overlook when launching innovation in a tech-saturated world. If you're curious about the intersection of psychology, business, and technology—and how small signals can drive massive behavior—you won't want to miss this one.
