Welcome to Lords of Limited, the podcast dedicated to getting you better at drafting in Magic: the Gathering. This week, we're updating our format thoughts after getting our hands on Lorwyn Eclipsed via the Early Access Event and pre-release weekend. We go over what stood out from a draft and gameplay perspective, how the archetypes and mechanics played out initially, and a whole host of movers up and movers down to get you prepped for ECL going live this week!
If trust in politicians is broken and the political system isn't delivering, then how might we go about fixing things? Can we revive faith in democratic government by doing things differently? The political scientist Hélène Landemore argues that electoral politics is broken and that the answer lies in doing away with career politicians. She imagines dismantling a system that is biased in favour of the special interests of big money, propelled by the constant quest for re-election and the jaded proffering empty promises. In her new book, Politics without Politicians she posits that, among other solutions, we need Athenian style participation through mechanisms such as civic lotteries. More people need to be involved first hand in decision making if everyone is to feel heard. Author and broadcaster Phil Tinline explains why he thinks politicians need to start thinking and talking about power again if they are to stand a chance of delivering on their promises. He argues that if nothing ever changes, then we need to understand who has too much power and who has too little and be prepared to do something about it. Michael Gove is the editor of The Spectator and a member of the House of Lords. He has extensive experience of government, serving in cabinet under four prime ministers between 2010 and 2024. It is widely acknowledged among, both his admirers and his critics, that he rapidly got to grips with his department's brief and knew exactly how to drive an agenda for change. He reflects on his experiences. Producer: Ruth Watts

Yesterday was a breathless day in Westminster. The defection of Robert Jenrick spawned plenty of headlines and even more memes. But now that the dust has settled, how has the news been received? Was it a total victory for Reform, and evidence that they are slowly swallowing up the Tory party, or is Kemi still in the race?Today, the assisted dying bill is back in the Lords. As discussions about this legislation drag on, does its implementation look increasingly unlikely?Oscar Edmondson speaks to Tim Shipman and James Heale.Produced by Oscar Edmondson.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. I went into this interview a little nervous - because let's be honest, Mariana van Zeller is famously serious. She interviews assassins, drug lords, traffickers, and people living in the darkest corners of the world. I was fully prepared for an intense, heavy conversation. Instead… we laughed. A lot. This episode ended up being funny, warm, surprising, and genuinely joyful - while still being jaw-dropping. Mariana shares what it was like moving to Syria right out of college to become a reporter, the surreal moments of being picked up in the middle of the night, blindfolded, and driven somewhere unknown, and an interview where she wasn't allowed to bring a phone and had no idea where she was going. We also talk about the personal side of a life spent taking massive risks - how her husband and family support her completely, how she manages fear, and what it really takes to walk into dangerous spaces with empathy instead of ego. This conversation reminded me that the bravest people aren't hardened - they're human, curious, and often unexpectedly funny. Mariana is all of that and more, and this ended up being one of my favorite interviews I've ever done.Listen to Mariana's Podcast The Hidden Third HEREProduced by Dear MediaSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tim Harford investigates some of the numbers in the news. This week: A headline in the Mail says more than 100 private schools have closed since Labour came to power and ended the VAT exemption for private schools. Is that number right? Is it true that when Covid hit the UK, a one-week delay in imposing lockdown led to 23,000 deaths? Do 10 million families rely on X as their main source of news? That's what government spokesperson Baroness Ruth Anderson said in the House of Lords, but is it correct? s there really a “quiet revival” of Christian worship? Two YouGov polls found churchgoing had gone up by 50% between 2018 and 2024 in England and Wales. New polling data suggests otherwise. We are in a new era where human rights have been replaced by trade and big businesses and they have almost entirely depleted our ability to show humanity to people on the other side.Lucy Hockings speaks to Baroness Arminka Helic, Member of the House of Lords and campaigner for refugees and victims of war.A former Bosnian refugee, she saw first hand the legacy of conflict-related sexual violence and the importance of ending impunity for rape and assault committed as a weapon of war. She tells of her warm welcome to the UK in 1992 and wants us always to remember the human beings behind the refugee statistics.Baroness Helic talks about the progress in raising awareness of the crimes and her own work in launching the ‘Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative' in 2012. She says that it's really hard for victims to speak out because of the stigma around rape but when they do, their voices need to be heard and the crimes documented. She also speaks about the plight of asylum seekers and the use of starvation in conflict zones like Gaza and Sudan. A Conservative peer, she's keen to take the politics out of immigration and remember our humanity. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. In my childhood years, I got to experience something I've cherished ever since: Starry nights.I was lucky to spend time during the summers on my Aunt Eula's and Uncle Ernest's tenant farm in Northeast Texas. With no TV or electronics, we made our own entertainment in the evenings, including “turning on” nature's Big Show. This meant rolling an old bed outdoors as darkness fell, so we could lay back, look up, and marvel at the endless expanse of constellations, comets, the Milky Way, planets, and other wonders of the cosmos. Today, though, 80 percent of Americans never see the starry night, for the artificial glare of city lights blots out nature's spectacular display. But wait – billionaires to the rescue! Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg, and other high-tech demigods who're spending trillions to foist a brave new world of artificial intelligence on us, claim that their scheme will actually relight the night sky!For real? Of course not.It turns out that they can't get enough cheap land and energy on Earth to supply the phantasmagoric sprawl of data centers their AI hustle will demand. So, they're going to put massive clusters of these systems into orbit, tethered to miles of solar mirrors stretching across our sky. While that means nature's stars-and-stuff will be even more obscured, they say that instead of watching the cosmos, we Earthlings can enjoy the artificial twinkle of their corporate data centers. This is Jim Hightower saying… Lest you think that, surely they wouldn't do this, note that those arrogant billionaire Lords of the Night are already investing humongous sums of money in space data centers As the CEO of one called “Starcloud” bluntly says: “It's not a debate. It's going to happen.”Do something! Not surprisingly, fighting for a quiet night sky is a difficult and overlooked area of activism. Here are some folks we found working on the issue—if you know of more, leave ‘em in the comments!* Dark Sky International works to create and preserve localities from light pollution, and they've started to address the impact of satellites, too. Here's a paper they released late last year.* On the nerdier side of things, the International Astronomical Union (IAU)'s Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky (CPS) — if that isn't a mouthful, we don't know what is — is working to mitigate the negative impact of satellite constellations. The band faithfully re-creates the vivid experience of live, high-energy music from what many consider to be Rock's greatest era. Welcome Gary Fox Jr. on keyboards and backing vocals, a long standing member of legendary Led Zeppelin tribute “Physical Graffiti”. His talent is beyond amazing. Their high energy show fully engages the crowd, with accurate song renditions that capture the raw energy and power that has made this style of music one of the most popular of all time. For info:https://www.beyondpurpleband.com/:
Praise Series #20 Rejoice in the Lord Always!Philippians 4:4 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”Rejoicing in the Lord is one of my favorite things to do. Praise and Worship are so critical in our faith journey. Rejoicing in the Lord is a great way to foster joy. This is something that I love to use to get me out of a funk or a sad place. This works anywhere and everywhere that you are. It is best if you can listen to music because if you are in a sad, angry, or depressed state, you might have trouble worshiping. You might not be in a place where you feel you have anything positive to say to the Lord, or about the Lord. However, when a song that you love comes on the radio, it is hard not to sing along and get into that song. Or, at least, it is not hard for me, as I love music.I love singing along as loudly as I can in my car and in my shower. I listen to Christian music, which, honestly, I didn't even know existed until 5 years ago. Well, I knew we sang Christian songs in church, but I didn't know they had contemporary Christian music, pop songs, rap songs, and rock songs, among various other genres. I am so in love with all of it. I love upbeat songs. It's like my body wants to dance along to the beat, even when I am out walking or running. Even when I am not somewhere where dancing is appropriate. If you don't know what I am talking about right now, I invite you to download the KLOVE app on your phone. It is the radio station I listen to all the time now, and it has so many good songs. You might be hesitant at first, but give it 30 days, and you will know all the words and love all the songs. You can also go onto the Spotify app on your phone, and I have created a playlist called Walk Boldly With Jesus Favorites, and it has all my favorite upbeat songs. Actually, there may be a few slower songs, but they are all good songs! If you are having a really hard day, put on a playlist of upbeat songs that sing of the glory of God. I am telling you, it is really hard to be sad and to think that God has abandoned you when you hear all these singers reminding you of how great God is and how He has been there for them in their hard times. A real-life example of how powerful music can be is the day when I was at the courthouse. I had to go there to do something really hard, and I was really sad. I remembered that I had my earbuds in my purse, so I put them in my ears and put on some worship music. I was sitting there feeling sad, and then one of my new favorite songs came on. The song is called My Promised Land and it is sung by Josiah Queen. Here is the beginning verse and chorus:You had me standing on a mountainWalking through barren landsYou took my hand and You saidYou can have this worldBut I won't go with youOh, I won't go with you [Pre-Chorus]But I ran out of placesAnd feelings I was chasingAll I have is You and You aloneAnd I said [Chorus]Hold on, wait a minuteI don't want what You ain't in, andI don't wanna go unless I'm going there with You It's You there, rain or shiningYou're the sun on my horizonsYou are my everythingMy promised land is You! The music is so upbeat, and I love it! Whenever I hear these songs, they remind me that God is my everything. If He is not in it, then I don't want it. It reminds me that He is there with me, rain or shine. I like to play my playlist on shuffle, and I like to believe the Holy Spirit is choosing the order of my songs. I am sure the Lord knew I needed this song the other day at the courthouse. I honestly considered going outside of the courthouse and dancing my sadness out. However, I didn't want to miss my name when they called it, so I just sang in a whisper voice and imagined myself dancing it out.I can't emphasize enough how critical praise and worship can be in changing your mood and lifting you out of a pit. The enemy gets so confused when we praise the Lord when we are struggling. They don't understand why we would praise God when we are hurting, sad, or angry. Also, the enemy can't stand the name of Jesus. All you have to do is say the name Jesus, and the enemy flees. I heard a speaker once who asked his friend, who is a Catholic priest and exorcist, what the most powerful prayer is when it comes to fighting the evil spirits and demons, and he said the most powerful thing we can say is, “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” That is pretty simple and yet powerful. If music is not your thing, that is ok, you can still praise the Lord. When I joined the Charismatic Prayer Group, they taught me to praise the Lord out loud by using various names for the Lord. For instance, you can say, “You are Lord of Lords and King of Kings. You are a miracle worker and a way maker. You are the prince of peace and the lion of Judah.” The prayer group gave everyone a piece of paper filled with praise phrases to help us out until we got comfortable coming up with our own. There is no right or wrong way to praise. You can praise the Lord in any way you choose. You can thank Him for all the things in your life, for all the ways He has saved you, and for the desires of your heart. You can praise Him for all he did for his people in the Bible. You do not have to do or say the right thing. The reason I mentioned the praise sheets is that you might not be able to think of good things when you are struggling. You might be looking at your life and believing that God has abandoned you. Your situation might seem like there's nothing to praise God about. If this is the case, I would like to review the praise sheet and simply read what is on it. It doesn't matter if I feel it or not; I just read it, and it helps lift me out of whatever I am feeling. Give it a try! I will put a link for the praise sheet I use in the show notes in case you want to have a cheat sheet like I do.I really want to encourage you to consider making praise and worship a regular part of your daily life if you're having a hard time finding joy. You can add it to something you're already doing, so it won't take up more time each day. For instance, you can listen to praise music while driving. Or, you can praise the Lord out loud in your car while driving. You can put on 20 minutes of praise music in the morning while getting ready, or while having your morning cup of tea or coffee. I invite you to give this a try this week and let me know what you think. You can reach me at Catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com. I would love to hear from you about how much praise and worship are changing your life. I would love to hear about your experience, good or bad. Let me know!Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode. Lord, we want to rejoice with you, and we want to rejoice in you. We want to praise you, Lord, not just when things are going well, but we want to be able to praise you in the struggle as well. Please teach us how, Lord. Please show us how to have joy when we are struggling. We love you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I am closing the founding members' launch for my mentoring group tomorrow evening. If you have been thinking about joining but have been putting it off, I encourage you to give it a try. 2025 was the easy part for Reform. If they win the election, however, how do they actually govern? In The Spectator this week, Tim Shipman writes about the party's plans to tackle Whitehall bloat, bypass the Lords and restore the authority of the Prime Minister over the various institutions of state. The man tasked with working this out is Danny Kruger, who is working up plans to push change through using Orders in Council – a device in the Privy Council – as well as statutory instruments and ministerial guidance to avoid the need for primary legislation. But the party is only in the foothills, and one source warns that ‘Nigel doesn't trust other politicians': can he build a winning team? Who has his ear? And does he actually want to be Prime Minister?Oscar Edmondson speaks to Tim Shipman and James Heale.Produced by Oscar Edmondson.Become a Spectator subscriber today to access this podcast without adverts. Kingdom Mindset (Replay)Mark 8:17-21 “And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, “Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? Do you have eyes and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” They said to him, “Twelve.” “And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?” And they said to him, “Seven.” Then he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”This verse comes after the feeding of the four thousand in Mark's gospel. Right before this verse, the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus and were asking Him to show them a sign. Then Jesus got on the boat and warned the disciples about the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod. They did not understand and were wondering if Jesus was talking about the fact that they forgot to bring bread. Jesus hears them talking, and this is where the verse picks up. Jesus is upset with them because they still don't seem to understand who they are with. Right before getting on the boat, Jesus fed four thousand people with just 7 loaves of bread. Then they get on the boat, and the disciples are worried because they only have one loaf of bread. The first thing Jesus asks is, “Do you still not perceive or understand?” I think this is a really important question. It shows us something that is so important. If we want to follow Jesus, we need to have a renewal of our minds. We can't filter the things we see the Holy Spirit do through our worldly brains. They just won't make any sense to us. What we can see in this verse is that the disciples haven't quite developed what they called in my class the “kingdom mindset.” Jesus even asks them, "Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear?” The disciples just saw Jesus feed 4,000 people, and yet they didn't really understand what they saw. They weren't able to understand it as well as they could if they let go of their worldly mindset and took on a kingdom mindset. In our worldly mindset, we understand that some things can and can't be done. We understand the laws of nature, and we honor them. We know from experience and everything we have been taught that some things are just impossible to do. We know this to be true. A kingdom mindset is one where we understand that nothing is impossible for our God. When we have a kingdom mindset, we understand that God can do more with less. He can feed 4,000 with 7 loaves. He can feed five thousand with five loaves. God can do the impossible. He can heal the leper and cure the blind. He can solve any problem that comes His way. A kingdom mindset is not something that is easy to develop. It is something we can work towards, and it is also a gift from God. First, I say we can work towards it because we can spend time going over the miracles Jesus performed, not just Jesus, but the disciples, too. We can read and reread them so that we know them like the back of our hand. We can read them so many times that they seem normal to us, because that is the thing. When you have a kingdom mindset, when you are with Jesus, a supernatural lifestyle is normal. You will see miracles everywhere you look once you are able to see them. Once your eyes are opened and the film is removed from your eyes, you will be amazed at all the things God is doing in your life and the lives of those around you. Secondly, I say it is a gift from God because Faith is a gift from God. We can read about more and more miracles, and that will definitely increase our faith, but to get the kind of faith we need to move mountains, that is not something we can manufacture on our own. That mountain-moving faith is a gift from God for those who are seeking it. The more we trust God, the more He allows our faith to grow. However, we need to do our part also by renewing our mind and working toward developing a kingdom mindset. It says in 1 Corinthians 2:12-13, “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.” Through our baptism, we have been given the Spirit of God. We have this Spirit living inside of us. This Spirit is the one who helps us interpret what we see and what we hear. Although He can only help us if we listen to Him. That still small voice you hear inside of you, that is the Holy Spirit. The thing is, the voice inside is so soft, and the voice of the world is constantly screaming at us. Sometimes it is hard to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit. If we want to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit, we need to practice. We need to intentionally set aside time to sit and quiet our minds and ask the Holy Spirit what He thinks. The more you practice, the louder the voice of the Spirit will become. The more you listen to the Holy Spirit, the less you listen to the world. The more you listen to the Holy Spirit, the more your mind will be transformed. Our teacher said something in class the other day that really resonated with me. She said You know your mind is beginning to be renewed when you start to lose the fear of man. Do you ever worry about what others think of you? Do you ever worry what someone might say or do? I know I would love to be more open with my prayer. I would love to walk up to every single person I see who is struggling in some way and ask if I could pray over them. If I see a physical injury, I instantly want to pray over that person for a healing. What is holding me back? Fear. I am afraid of what they might say, what if they say no, and I feel rejected. I am afraid of what I might say. What if I say the wrong thing? What if I pray for them and they aren't healed? What if they get upset? All these things hold me back from living the life I know God has called me to live. What about you? What fears are holding you back? Our teacher said, “Everything changes when we lose that fear of man.” I want to lose that fear so badly, and yet I don't think it is something I can will away. As mentioned earlier, I truly believe developing a kingdom mindset is partly my job and partly God's job. I think faith is a gift from God and that He will provide the wisdom I need to strengthen my faith. I also think the more I expose myself to His miracles, through reading about them, maybe watching them on TV or YouTube, and telling others about them, my faith will grow. The more we expose ourselves to the supernatural, the more normal the supernatural will become to us. When I heard our teacher say that everything changes when we lose that fear of man, I instantly asked God, “How do I lose that fear of man?” Later in the class, the answer I heard was, “Turn your eyes to me.” Did you notice that when I was listing my fears, it was all about me? I might say the wrong thing, I might feel rejected, and so on. What if I fixed my eyes on Jesus? What if I trusted He was prompting me to pray over the person, and therefore He would give me the words to pray. When we pray over people, we are not the ones healing them; God is, so the results or the fruit of my prayer, whether they are healed or not, are not up to me. I worry about whether I will feel rejected, but if I were focused on Jesus, I would worry more about whether he feels rejected because He asked me to pray over someone and I didn't. If we want a transformation of our mind, we need to turn our eyes to Jesus. We need to focus on Him. We need to listen to that small voice inside of us. We need to give that voice time to talk. If we want to develop a kingdom mindset, then we need to remember all the miracles we have seen and heard about. We need to look at all God did through the disciples and realize that God wants to do that through us, too. He wants to work through us; we just have to let Him. Do you want a renewal of the mind? Can you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus? Whenever we start to worry about what the world might think, we just need to turn our eyes back to Jesus. Whenever we start to think too much about ourselves, we can turn our gaze back to Jesus. A renewal of the mind is not only possible, but it is also necessary!Dear Heavenly Father, we ask you to bless all those listening to the episode today. Lord, we love you, and we are so grateful for all you do for us. Lord, we ask you to fill us with the gift of faith. We want to be able to see all your miracles through a supernatural lens. We want to see what is truly right in this world. We ask you for a renewal of our minds. We ask you for the faith we need so we can move mountains. We ask you for the faith needed to heal the sick and cure the blind. Lord, we believe, help our unbelief. Give us all we need to do your will, Lord Jesus! You are the almighty one. You are Lord of Lords and King of Kings. We love you, Lord, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name, Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Prayer should not be ritualistic or religious. It is a relationship with God, and prayer is the time we get in tune with the Master. Thankfully, Jesus does give us an outline in Matthew 6, on the way to pray, but it is meant to be much deeper than us repeating the Lord's Prayer. Prayer is where the Father's heart and way of thinking overtakes our own. It is a place where we find belonging in the Lord. Prayer is not a religious checklist, but an encounter with God and His Word that changes us.
Matt Ridley's seminal book, The Rational Optimist, has inspired many since its publication in 2010 and greatly influenced the creation of The Optimism Institute. In this far-ranging discussion, Matt will describe an early education that he said was steeped in pessimism but how later in life he found that much of what he'd been taught was simply not true. This led him to set on a nearly evangelical quest to spread the word that interaction and trade between people and nations, including the free exchange of ideas, will continue to set us on an inexorable path towards increasing prosperity. Chapters: 00:00 Introducing Matt Ridley Bill Burke introduces Matt Ridley, acclaimed author of "The Rational Optimist" and other influential books. He highlights Ridley's extensive background, including his service in the House of Lords and his work on various scientific committees. 02:39 From Pessimism to Rational Optimism Matt Ridley shares his personal journey from a pessimistic upbringing in the 1970s to becoming a 'rational optimist' based on evidence. He recounts how his research for 'The Rational Optimist' revealed that many assumed negative trends, like decreasing happiness with wealth, were actually false. 06:01 The Genesis of "The Rational Optimist" Ridley explains his evangelical motivation for writing 'The Rational Optimist,' aiming to counter pervasive doom and gloom, especially among young people. He also sought to explore the evolutionary roots of human prosperity and growth, driven by an innate curiosity about why the world was improving. 07:28 Ideas Have Sex: Cooperation and Trade Matt Ridley delves into his concept of "ideas having sex," explaining how human cooperation, trade, and the exchange of specialized skills drive prosperity. He posits that this fundamental human tendency to swap goods and ideas is as crucial to cultural evolution as sex is to natural evolution. 13:50 Social Media's Impact: Polarization and Progress Ridley reflects on social media's impact on his 'ideas having sex' theory, acknowledging its initial promise for communication but also its role in political polarization. 19:29 Panglossian vs. Rational Optimism Ridley distinguishes his rational optimism from Panglossian optimism, emphasizing that he believes the world can and should be improved, not that it's already perfect. He counters common pessimistic arguments by pointing to long-term improvements in living standards and the gradual nature of good news compared to sudden bad news. 23:56 Trust and the Pencil's Lesson Matt Ridley discusses the importance of interpersonal trust for societal prosperity, contrasting it with institutional trust. He also elaborates on the 'I, Pencil' essay, illustrating how millions of specialized individuals unknowingly collaborate to produce even a simple item like a pencil. 33:15 Gratitude, Specialization, and Daily Miracles Ridley encourages gratitude for the vast network of people who contribute to our daily lives, using the example of a simple meal. 36:50 Climate Change: A Problem to Be Solved Matt Ridley shares his nuanced perspective on climate change, acknowledging it as a real threat but cautioning against panic and exaggeration. He suggests viewing it as a problem solvable through human ingenuity, while also highlighting the overlooked environmental benefits of CO2 and the harm caused by some climate prevention measures. 42:51 The Future of Innovation: Worries and Hopes Ridley discusses the limitless nature of knowledge and innovation, emphasizing communication over population size for progress.
