It’s been a quiet off-season around baseball, but that’s never stopped ATL from reading between the lines. Once Ben and Arden get started with their reads, they find that we’ve actually learned quite a few lessons about the Blue Jays this winter. This episode is produced and sound engineered by Christian Ryan, and hosted by Ben Nicholson-Smith […]
The last day of radio term always sees a bit of giddiness among the team. The presenters don't wear their usual radio uniform, you can bring your board games and videogames into the studio (although Simon always brings his Switch in), and Lewis Schaffer brings in cakes for us all to enjoy. But one thing Team OLL never does on the last day of term is go skiving. UNTIL NOW. Ann decided that instead of doing the final news of the season, she would rather be driven to Italy by her in-laws. This meant that there was a news-shaped hole in our show. Normally this would result in Simon and Ste seeing what was on Eurogamer, but they had planned ahead and got Sega Badawi aka Caretaker Ben down the Skype line to tell them videogame news that was slightly too long for the news jingle. Considering that Ben couldn't hear the jingle and kept losing his place on his script it worked alright. He even provided us with some Nintendo Karen updates. Once Ben was gone, Ste and Simon had the chance to talk about what they are planning to do over the summer and tried to clarify what the big Gamescom rumour was in 2018. We also booked our first guest of Season 20, made some Marioke announcements (and some pre-announcements), and joined the Slayers Club. Cheerio and happy holidays! Today’s episode features a great talk with Ben Poswalk, Executive Director of Paradise Place Preschool. Ben came to Kris as her only local client in Crested Butte, Colorado, with some challenges in the enrollment, marketing, and staffing departments. Once Ben got rolling he not only doubled his enrollment and increased his income by 70%, but won Marketer of the Year and now is making a huge impact in the lives of his children, his staff, and school. Kris talks with Ben about his own mindset shift, how he communicates his own “why” and how it impacted the energy and passion of his teachers. Ben also shares his advice for those about to go into the nonprofit realm, his challenges as an Executive Director, and why Space Mountain in Disneyland will always be a memorable ride for him. Key Takeaways: [7:51] Kris is joined by her guest, Ben Poswalk, Executive Director of Paradise Place Preschool. He and Kris are neighbors, both located in the beautiful and small community of Crested Butte, Colorado. [8:23] Fun fact: Crested Butte is the wildflower capital of Colorado! [9:12] Ben shares his background from going to the Air Force ROTC, to teaching preschool, and then running a nonprofit. [11:36] He met Kris at a time when he was feeling very challenged with some of the aspects of raising money, marketing, and handling his staff. He found the coaching to help him “unsink the Titanic” and find happiness in his career again. [17:04] Joining a peer group where the members are at a level where you want to be can help you level up in your career and mindset way quicker than doing it on your own. [21:29] When you share your ‘why’ and your vision, that’s what attracts people to want to work with you and do business with you. One of Ben’s greatest visions is to help children reveal their kindness to one another, their own community, and the entire planet. Once he got clear and communicated that to his staff, they understood the driving force and the pieces started to align better. [25:26] Ben gets to know the human side of his teachers first and foremost. He invests time and energy in both group and one-on-one settings. He pulls his core values of integrity, kindness, and passion in the interview process, and looks for someone that aligns with the “tribe” of his school and their company culture. [35:36] As an Executive Director, Ben finds his relationship with the Board very important and one that needs fostering, especially as a nonprofit. [38:51] You should have enough in the bank so that you could pay three payrolls in case an emergency happens. [39:25] Ben defines a rockstar as somebody that just naturally lives and breathes the passion that comes from working with children. "FROM SPEECHLESS TO SHOWTIME" Ben wanted to be an entertainer since he was five or six years old. The only problem was he had a stutter problem that began around the age of three. I think you already know how this story goes, Ben had a difficult time in school and was bullied. Sometimes he would just lock up and couldn’t even say hello to people in the hallway. In 7th grade science class Ben was one of the most educated kids in class. Once he had to give another presentation he literally couldn’t speak. Ben was enlisted in speech theorpy classes throughout his childhood but would never commit to the exercises and practices they would send him home with. One afternoon his speech teacher had him reading a report out loud when she noticed something odd. She noticed that Ben seemed to be focusing on the presentation of his speech but not the content. Ben explained, “Yeah, I want it to sound perfect. It doesn’t matter what I’m saying.. I just want it to sound good.” After Ben realized he was seeing things all wrong. Most people with a fear of public speaking see it wrong. They think that it’s so important and everyone is judging them and it has to be perfect or they will look like an idiot. In reality, the opposite is true. Most people are just glad they’re not the one speaking and have very low expectations. They aren’t expecting Winston Churchill; they are just expecting information from whoever was chosen by this company at this moment to speak. “Take a step back and think about if your little speech or stand up act or presentation at work is really so important. Take another step back and realize there are millions of people starving to death. Take a further step back and realize we’re spinning out of control on a planet in a vast unknowable universe where we are the tiniest speak that truly couldn’t have any significance based on the size and grand scheme of things.Do you think on that planet, on that one spot in that one room you’re top with the way it comes off? Not even the words, but the style?!” Ben said his perspective started to shift. “You’re not special because you’re speaking to people. Your job just happens to be speaking but you’re still just a cog in the machine.“ Once Ben started to see the bigger picture, he doesn’t get the least bit nervous. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “The Bandit“ Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Dreams Become Real by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)
A weekly chat tackling the issue of educational technology from both sides. Ben Rimes, a former teacher turned educational technologist, chats with Pete Poggione, an Information Technology Professional from the private sector turned School IT Director. This week we focused entirely on questions from our school district, including some seriously geeky responses from Pete about RAM, cache, and how to best avoid the "beachball of death". We even make a recommendation for Memory Clean, a Mac App that will help you regain some "snap" in your Mac's step. Once Ben gets Pete back on track we attempt to tackle some big questions about the direction of technology in our school district, and Pete is completely stumped by a musical trivia question about the Beatles.Timestamps for this week's questions:1:30 What has Pete been doing at his big conference?2:03 So this conference you were at is seriously techie?4:30 Any tips for people to get their Macs to run faster?5:28 For non techies, what does Cache or RAM stand for?5:58 Does Ben’s desktop analogy work for understanding RAM?7:50 What can teachers do to help free up space in RAM?13:20 Did we really just spend six minutes being geeks about RAM, hard drives, and caches?14:00 How does Pete see his job changing when our bond passes next month?16:30 What’s your big picture for technology in Mattawan Schools?20:06 What is the only Beatles’ song that none of the four band members play instruments on?21:05 Ben questions whether Pete can really call himself a musicianYou can talk about the show or continue the conversations on Twitter using the hashtag #TechDirectorChat or chatting up Ben (@techsavvyed) or Pete (@ppoggione) on Twitter.
