This week on GameBurst, the team unpacks a turbulent few days for the games industry. Sony has reportedly reversed its strategy of simultaneous PC and console releases, returning first-party titles to a period of PlayStation exclusivity — a significant shift that analysts believe is designed to shore up the platform's appeal ahead of its next hardware cycle. Finally, in a remarkable piece of gaming history, the US National Videogame Museum has acquired the fabled Nintendo PlayStation prototype, the failed Sony-Nintendo collaboration that inadvertently gave birth to the PlayStation brand. In this week's Picks of the Week, Gary champions the Anglo-Saxon board game Bretwalda, Jerome highlights the indie PC title Sector Unknown and a theatrical wildcard in Phil Porter's BLINK at the King's Head Theatre, while Taylor turns their attention to the Nintendo Switch 2. #gameburst

In this week's episode of GameBurst, we navigate a particularly turbulent period for the video game industry, marked by significant leadership shifts and mounting legal pressures. We lead with the executive upheaval at Xbox, where the sudden departures of stalwarts Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond have forced a swift pledge from new leadership to return the brand to its console hardware roots. The legal landscape for Valve also intensifies this week. The PC gaming giant is currently facing a dual-front battle: a lawsuit from the New York attorney general over alleged illegal gambling within loot box systems, and a staggering £656m collective action claim in the UK courts regarding Steam's market dominance. Meanwhile, the human cost of industry consolidation is felt at Eurogamer and Outside Xbox, which have been hit by a fresh wave of editorial layoffs following their acquisition in 2024. On a brighter note for fans of gothic platforming, Konami has announced Castlevania: Belmont's Curse for a 2026 release, developed in collaboration with the team behind Dead Cells. We also discuss the departure of creative director Clint Hocking from Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed Codename Hexe and dive into our Picks of the Week, featuring the board game Speakeasy and the latest from LumiBricks. Finally, we address community feedback regarding the ethics of game ratings and the evolution of the podcast's format. #gameburst

By all accounts, this should have been a big year for gaming, but recent releases such as Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ghost of Yotei, and Outer Worlds 2 are not selling as well as developers (and shareholders) perhaps hoped. We discuss why they might be underperforming along with Ubisoft's potential pending destruction, a Eurogamer reviewer who admitted to regretting giving Dragon Age: The Veilguard such a high score, the Steam Machine and what that means for Xbox, and more!

PlayStation 5 has officially turned five, giving us much to reflect upon. Has the console lived up to its potential, left folks disappointed, or fallen somewhere in between? We get into that -- alongside new Sony financials that paint an admittedly rosy picture -- before getting into the meat of our show. Two new Sony-aligned games have been revealed, but they've left many potential players puzzled, as neither offering is actually on PlayStation hardware. For starters, NCSoft's long-rumored Horizon MMO is real. It's called Steel Frontiers and it actually looks really nice. But it's only on PC and mobile. Meanwhile, a new Ratchet & Clank game has also been showcased, an online arena shooter called Ranger Rumble. But it too eschews PS5 and PS4, instead going straight to mobile platforms only. What gives? Why does Sony seem half-in on these off-platform initiatives, all the while neglecting their core audience that could give these respective titles the boost they need? Is it time for them to break old habits and embrace a more cogent multiplatform direction that centers PlayStation first and foremost? Plus: Sony's new 27" gaming monitor has people intrigued, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Spirits is getting another closed test, Elden Ring: Nightreign is receiving some much-needed DLC, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What do we think of Valve's new Steam Machine PC-console hybrid? In any given game's menus, where should subtitle options be nestled: General, Audio, or Graphics? Does ARC Raiders success potentially benefit Marathon? Is Dustin wielding his power over Brad in unsavory ways? As of December 12, 2024, Balatro has sold an impressive 3.5 million units, proving its profitability within hours of release by hitting $1 million in sales in just 8 hours and selling 250,000 copies within its first 72 hours. By August 2024, it reached 2 million sales, further boosted by nominations at The Game Awards 2024, where it won Best Independent Game and was nominated for Game of the Year. Critically acclaimed with universal praise from Metacritic, Balatro has been described by IGN as "ludicrously fun" and by Eurogamer as offering "near-infinite poker possibilities." Its gameplay revolves around 150 unique Joker cards that modify scoring, ensuring deep strategic gameplay without any gambling mechanics. The game's accessibility is notable, designed for those new to poker, with features catering to visual impairments and motion sensitivity. Balatro's platform performance includes initial releases on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox, with a significant mobile expansion in September 2024, where it outperformed Minecraft on iOS sales charts. Analytic Dreamz highlights the game's no-microtransactions policy and successful crossovers with games like Stardew Valley and Cyberpunk 2077. Despite minor controversies like a temporary ratings issue, Balatro has fostered strong community support, contributing to the indie game revolution. Future updates promise to keep the game fresh, underlining its bright future in the gaming industry.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/analytic-dreamz-notorious-mass-effect/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

News is admittedly slow as the industry awaits major announcements at the imminent Game Awards. But a specific interview was recently released that still gives us plenty to discuss. The website Eurogamer sat down with ex-PlayStation executive Shawn Layden for a fascinating chat about the present and future of the console space, and he had tons to say. We spend a lot of time dissecting his thoughts on topics ranging from PlayStation 6 and console agnosticism to Sony publishing on Xbox and perhaps the most important issues of all: The cost to develop increasingly long and expensive games that few people even bother to beat. Other news this week includes the shuttering of Ubisoft's beleaguered shooter XDefiant, the announcement of a blatant ripoff of Guerrilla's Horizon series called Light of Motiram, FromSoft's puzzling claim that it's not working on an Elden Ring sequel, and more. Listener inquiries help us round things out, per usual. Is Sony quietly giving PSVR2 a new push? How can Square Enix still be publishing PS1 games? Will Sony's E3 2013 'game sharing video' truly resonate throughout time? When will the audience learn that -- yes, indeed! -- you should definitely listen to our rock-solid relationship advice?
