The film writer Brian Abrams returns to discuss Predator 2 (1990), directed by Stephen Hopkins. The sequel swaps Arnold Schwarzenegger for Danny Glover and transplants the action to a sweltering, near-future Los Angeles in 1997, where climate collapse and gang warfare create the ideal hunting ground for an extraterrestrial predator on safari.Often dismissed as a crass, hyper-violent downgrade from the original, Brian and I argue that Predator 2 is the only other truly worthy entry in the franchise. Its appeal lies in sheer excess, using escalation to meaningfully expand the series' mythology. Nearly saddled with the newly introduced NC-17 rating due to its extreme violence, the film now plays like a meathead action satire in the vein of RoboCop. It offers a contradictory vision of future America—one shaped by imperialist blowback—depicting Los Angeles as a literal “concrete jungle,” populated by a multicultural cast trapped within a racially insensitive landscape of Colombian and Jamaican drug cartels and an ambulance-chasing tabloid culture, while a dreadlocked interstellar hunter methodically racks up bodies. We also dig into why Arnold didn't return, how Steven Seagal was briefly considered as the lead, the film's chaotic production history, and more.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast.

In this second episode of our 2026 series about iconic movies from the 1980s, we are sitting down to discuss the seminal action movie of the decade, The Terminator. Over the course of our sprawling conversation you will hear us talk, among others, about how the movie came together in an unlikely way and became a word-of-mouth hit, how it cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger's status as the action man of his time, and how it spawned a billion-dollar franchise on the back of what essentially was an exploitation horror with a sci-fi gimmick. We also talk about the film's special effects, its oddly ingenious music, how its setup is as ridiculous as it is phenomenal and much, much more!Tune in and enjoy!Subscribe to our patreon at patreon.com/uncutgemspod (3$/month) and support us by gaining access to ALL of our exclusive podcasts, such as bonus tie-ins, themed retrospectives and director marathons!Hosts: Jakub Flasz & Randy BurrowsFeaturing: Rich FosterHead over to our website to find out more! Send a textIf there's a mainstay in the structure of a film noir, it might be the tension between the protagonist --- the gee, the mug, the sucker --- and the femme fatale. The male led around by his nose, or his whatever, down the road to his doom, or his prison cell, or to a long walk down a deserted, dark highway. She inevitably does him wrong --- sometimes willfully, at other times simply because she wants --- freedom, or money, or to get away and up from under. The femme employs her wiles, if I may use that term in the 21st Century (but it was totally relevant in the 1940s and 50s) to maneuver the guy into whatever she desires, whether he's successful at obtaining it or not. We devoted an entire pod in the second season to the idea of the femme fatale and detailing the careers of some of the top actors who fit the role within the noir genre. For most femmes, that's as complex as the noir story demands --- exert some of those wiles! They skip off with the dough or the goods, free as a bird usually, leaving the gee to hold the bag. Occasionally, very occasionally, you may encounter a film noir that delves more deeply into the character of the femme, a film in which she is just as decimated or defeated at the curtain as the gee. Let's take a look this month at such a film, crafted by three of the best --- one of the femmes fatale we highlighted in season two, due to her long and deep impression on noir, and a director and cinematographer who left a huge mark on noir in their time. It's also a cast threesome, to increase the tension, if you will. From many – time noir supporters Eagle-Lion Films, it's the 1948 production of Raw Deal. And no, Schwarzenegger is not in it… Website and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comBluesky: @wonderfulpeople.bsky.social
Our Hard to Kill 1990 Review kicks off with a simple truth: the late 80s and early 90s were the golden age of action heroes. Stallone, Schwarzenegger and Willis ruled the world… and then along came a man with a ponytail, a whisper voice and an absolute obsession with breaking forearms. This week Whitey, Dan and Will the Worky step back into the dojo to tackle Steven Seagal's second ever film, Hard to Kill (1990). A movie that, at the time, felt like the arrival of the next unstoppable action icon… and now feels like a fever dream involving aikido, silk shirts and extremely uncomfortable sex scenes.Seagal plays Mason Storm, a cop who uncovers political corruption and is immediately shot, along with his wife, in what might be the least secure safe house ever filmed. Storm survives after being pumped full of shotgun pellets and spending seven years in a coma. Yes, seven years. And apparently, all it takes to recover is a massage, a training montage and a nurse who instantly falls in love with him. From there, the movie becomes a revenge story, but also, somehow, a romance, a conspiracy thriller, a martial arts film, and a weird Seagal self-fantasy all rolled into one.The boys dive deep into: • The unbelievable hospital security • The most aggressive love scene ever filmed • Mason Storm's questionable medical recovery • The ponytail era of action cinema • And why nobody recognises the villain's voice despite him repeating the same catchphrase constantly There are discussions about video store culture, the 1990 action boom, and how Seagal briefly convinced the world he belonged alongside the legends. But time has not been kind to Hard to Kill. Watching it today reveals something different. Schwarzenegger knew he was in on the joke. Bruce Willis had charm. Seagal genuinely believes he is the most dangerous man alive… and that may be the biggest reason this film is unintentionally hilarious.Still, there are broken bones, exploding pool cues, corrupt cops and more arm snapping than a chiropractor convention. And honestly… that's why we kind of love talking about it.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is Seagal the strangest action star of all time? Does Hard to Kill accidentally become a comedy? And is this the most confident bad movie ever made?Leave a review, share the episode and send it to a mate who still thinks Seagal could win a real fight.#BornToWatch #HardToKill #StevenSeagal #90sAction #ActionMovies #MoviePodcast #CultMovies #BadMoviesGoodTimes #VideoStoreEra #FilmReview

Nooo, we didn't forget. around this time last year, we reviewed 1987's Arnold Schwarzenegger starring film The Running Man. We knew there was a remake coming down the block, but we put it off for reasons we get into on the podcast. When director Edgar Wright was asked a question on Twitter about what movie he wanted to remake, he did not hesitate in answering The Running Man. Producer Simon Kinberg (the X-Men franchise) saw the tweet and got this production going. Wright, with original author Stephen King's approval, wrote up a script with his longtime collaborator Michael Bacall, and cast actor of the moment Glen Powell (Top Gun Maverick) in the Ah-nold role. Was the wait worth it? Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they review their very first Edgar Wright film. Did he do the book justice? Is this up to Edgar Wright's standards? Is King's presence felt? They answer all these, and so much more, in this special release! Come back next week when the boys start up their look at the Scream franchise.

Can you jump into a superhero series without years of Marvel homework—or is the entertainment world finally opening up to everyone? That's the question that launches this episode of The JB and Sandy Show, where JB, Sandy, Tricia, and guest Steven Presley from Thunder Pop TV dive into the latest trends in streaming, podcasting, and pop culture.Steven introduces the new Marvel series Wonder Man, designed for non-Marvel fans. “This is the first thing I've seen of Marvel in a long time that it didn't feel like you had to be caught up on all the Marvel shows and movies,” Steven explains. The crew laughs about superhero overload and the relief of a fresh start: “You can get in on the ground floor of this one and not have to know anything.” Sandy adds, “It actually looks pretty good. The superhero stuff doesn't even come in until later. It's kind of a secondary part of the show.”

Send us a textThis week on Movies Worth Seeing, we crank the dial back to peak '80s insanity with The Running Man — and honestly, this movie rules. What looks like a dumb, muscle-bound action flick is actually a viciously funny, cynical satire wrapped in neon spandex and one-liners. Game shows, fake news, manufactured villains, and entertainment built on public humiliation — somehow this film feels more relevant now than it did in 1987.We break down:Why this is one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most underrated rolesHow the movie balances brutal action with sharp social commentaryThe outrageous villains, practical effects, and iconic killsJesse Ventura, Richard Dawson, and a supporting cast having an absolute blastAnd why The Running Man is pure rewatchable fun that still hits todayIt's loud, ridiculous, politically incorrect, and unapologetically entertaining — exactly what great '80s cinema should be.

Send us a textThis week on Movies Worth Seeing, we go back to the jungle for one of the most rewatchable action films of all time: Predator. What starts as a macho '80s commando fantasy slowly mutates into a razor-sharp sci-fi survival horror — and that's exactly why Predator still slaps nearly 40 years later. We break down how the film cleverly subverts the invincible action-hero trope, why the ensemble cast is stacked with pure testosterone, and how the Predator itself became one of cinema's most iconic monsters. We also dig into:Why the first half feels like a different movie (on purpose)Arnold Schwarzenegger's quiet evolution from gun-blazing leader to hunted survivorThe brilliance of the creature design, sound design, and jungle settingIconic lines, scenes, and memes that refuse to dieAnd whether Predator is secretly smarter than it ever gets credit forIf you love practical effects, quotable dialogue, and films that reward repeat viewings, this one absolutely earns its place on the list.
De regresso aos conceitos alucinogénicos dos anos 90, desta vez com um homem a engravidar e levar a termo a sua gestação. E não é um homem qualquer, era o icon da masculinidade da altura, Arnold Schwarzenegger
Red Sonja (1985) was chosen by Dave, and it represents one of the most high-profile attempts to expand the sword-and-sorcery boom that followed the success of the early 1980s fantasy epics. Produced by Dino De Laurentiis and directed by Richard Fleischer, the film was developed as a companion piece to the popularity of Conan-style fantasy cinema, drawing inspiration from the Marvel Comics version of the character rather than directly adapting Robert E. Howard's original prose stories. The production was mounted as an international co-production, with a sizeable budget for the genre and a clear goal of building a new fantasy franchise centered around a female action lead — something still relatively rare in big-budget fantasy filmmaking at the time.Filming took place primarily in Italy, using large-scale practical sets, location shooting, and practical effects typical of mid-1980s fantasy productions. The movie featured a mix of established stars and European genre actors, and leaned heavily on physical stunt work and elaborate costume design rather than visual effects, which were still limited for fantasy filmmaking at the time. Despite heavy promotion and strong name recognition tied to the wider sword-and-sorcery trend, the film struggled critically and commercially on release. However, over time, Red Sonja has developed a cult following, particularly among fans of 1980s fantasy cinema, and is often discussed as part of the era's broader push toward larger-scale, effects-driven fantasy storytelling. If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn an age of dark magic… one warrior will rise to defy it.Forged by tragedy and driven by vengeance, a lone fighter sets out across a brutal fantasy world where tyrants rule and power is taken by force. With steel in her hand and fire in her heart, she will face impossible odds, deadly warriors, and ancient forces that threaten to consume everything.Red Sonja — where legends are born… and only the strongest survive.Fun FactsRed Sonja was Brigitte Nielsen's film debut, launching her short but memorable 1980s action-fantasy career.Arnold Schwarzenegger appears in the film as Lord Kalidor, rather than Conan, due to character licensing and rights issues. The movie is based primarily on the Marvel Comics version of Red Sonja, not directly on Robert E. Howard's original literary character. The film's fantasy score was composed by Ennio Morricone, one of the most famous film composers of all time.Arnold Schwarzenegger later joked in interviews that he used Red Sonja as a way to punish his children — by making them watch it.The film has become a cult favorite among 80s fantasy fans, despite its mixed reputation on release.Several weapons and props from the film were reused in other European fantasy productions during the mid-1980s.The movie was heavily marketed through fantasy magazines and comic-book advertising, targeting existing genre fans.Red Sonja is often grouped with films like Krull, Beastmaster, and Ladyhawke as part of the mid-80s fantasy boom. The character of Red Sonja has continued to appear in comics, reboots, and reboot discussions for decades, keeping the film culturally relevant.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback
Is The Running Man (2025) the rare remake that's actually better than the original?I went into this one as a fan of the 1987 Schwarzenegger classic—campy, quotable, and unmistakably of its era. But this new adaptation takes a very different approach: darker, smarter, more faithful to Stephen King's novel, and far more interested in making a point than cracking jokes. In this spoiler-lite review, I break down why The Running Man (2025) is a far more serious, fully realized dystopian sci-fi film than its predecessor—one with top-notch production value, a strong central performance from Glen Powell, and themes that feel uncomfortably relevant in today's media-obsessed world. That said… this movie is not for everyone. If you're looking for pure escapist fun, over-the-top villains, and one-liners you can quote for decades, this might not be your jam. But if you want sci-fi that actually makes you think—and maybe squirm a little—this one deserves your attention. In this episode, I cover:• How the 2025 film differs from the 1987 original• Why this version feels truer to Stephen King's intent• Glen Powell's performance and rise as a leading man• Who will love this movie, and who absolutely won't• Whether we should finally stop comparing everything to Arnie (sorry, Arnie)Now it's your turn:
Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay decide to let off some steam and talk about a classic that epitomized '80s action, 'Commando.' Bombay starts it off by recalling how his parents introduced him to adult movies when he was 7 years old by renting this banger. Then the boys talk about multiple ludicrous elements of this film that was seemingly only made as a way to showcase Arnold Schwarzenegger's bulging body. Naturally, his John Matrix is matched up against Vernon Wells' chainmail vest-wearing Bennett, who is more obsessed with Arnie than director Mark Lester. The movie is loaded with iconic one-liners, and wildly illogical decision making. After jumping out of a plane, Schwarzenegger teams up with the adorable Rae Dawn Chong, who coincidentally happens to be getting her pilot's license. After taking out about 40 security guards/mall cops, Schwarzenegger flies out to Val Verde to face off against Dan Hedaya — who was inexplicably cast as a Central American dictator — and his army of goons. In order to save his daughter, Matrix must kill every last one of them, and in the most brutal ways possible. Will you have a bad time listening to this gonzo episode? No chance!

The 80s were the decade of the sequel in many ways, but 1990 was just past the end of an era when it came to launching big sci-fi horror franchises. So when 'Predator 2' came along, offering its audiences no Schwarzenegger and no John McTiernan, a lot of people wrote it off sight unseen... but as a reflection of a very important transition in American culture, it's got a lot to offer for film scholars. Aaron Frescas & Chris Chapman (See You at the Poddy, Richter Podcast) are back in the studio for another hysterical chat: We discuss Arnie movies that we consider criminally underated but how many of them will we all agree upon? Which ones are objectionally not great but are made better by our Austrian star's presence? And which ones are easily solid double features with the likes of COMMANDO, THE RUNNING MAN, PREDATOR & even TRUE LIES? OPENING QUOTE FROM: The 6th Day (2000)
George Butler and Robert Fiore, the film was conceived at a time when bodybuilding was still a niche subculture, largely unknown to mainstream audiences. The production followed key figures in the bodybuilding world in the lead-up to the 1975 Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe competitions, with the filmmakers aiming to humanise the athletes and demystify the sport. Shot on a relatively small budget, the documentary combined cinéma vérité techniques with carefully staged interviews, helping to create a more dramatic and accessible presentation than traditional sports films of the era.The production became particularly notable for how it shaped public perception of bodybuilding, largely through its editing and character-focused storytelling. Pumping Iron played a significant role in launching Arnold Schwarzenegger into mainstream celebrity, positioning him as a charismatic and media-savvy figure beyond competitive bodybuilding. Upon release, the film found unexpected success in arthouse cinemas and on college campuses, eventually crossing over into wider pop culture. Its long-term impact is difficult to overstate: Pumping Iron helped popularise fitness culture in the late 1970s and 1980s and is frequently cited as a foundational text for modern bodybuilding, gym culture, and sports documentaries alike. If you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryFrom a world few people understood… came a film that changed how strength was seen forever.Inside the gyms, under the lights, and behind the poses, a group of elite competitors prepare their bodies and their minds for the ultimate test. If you've ever thought, “There's no way people are that mad about a commercial,” congratulations — this episode of The Rizzuto Show daily comedy podcast is here to prove you wrong. Matthew McConaughey teams up with Uber Eats, says the word “food” approximately 900 times, and suddenly fans are threatening boycotts like it's a political scandal. Welcome to modern outrage. This episode spirals immediately into everything you didn't know you needed today: debates about why German sounds angry, capybaras being weirdly adorable, and Arnold Schwarzenegger officially returning to the Predator universe — causing a measurable spike in global testosterone. Science can't explain it. We can. Then there's Kanye West, who just happens to issue a heartfelt apology for past behavior right before dropping a new album. Timing is everything. Is it sincere? Is it PR? Does anyone even care anymore? The crew breaks it all down with just the right amount of skepticism and side-eye.Things get even messier with Bert Kreischer's wildly inappropriate family sitcom, a free-solo climber scaling a skyscraper while America stress-texts each other, and Tyra Banks being retroactively questioned for her iconic (and unhinged) America's Next Top Model moments. Add in Jason Biggs explaining American Pie to his kid, Sydney Sweeney climbing the Hollywood sign in a bra, and a legendary porno birthday — and suddenly this funny podcast feels like therapy… but louder. If you want a funny podcast packed with celebrity chaos, pop culture commentary, sarcastic humor, and daily comedy show energy straight from St. Louis, this episode delivers exactly what your algorithm secretly wants.Follow The Rizzuto Show → https://linktr.ee/rizzshowConnect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast → https://1057thepoint.com/RizzShowHear The Rizz Show daily on 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MOMatthew McConaughey has NFL fans up in armsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Pixelkino, huh?
