He has spent the past 25 years speaking to audiences in all 50 states, on over 1000 college and high school campuses, at hundreds of professional and academic conferences, and to community groups across the nation. He has also lectured internationally in Canada and Bermuda, and has trained corporate, government, law enforcement and medical industry professionals on methods for dismantling racism in their institutions. Wise's antiracism work traces back to his days as a college activist in the 1980s, fighting for divestment from (and economic sanctions against) apartheid South Africa. After graduation, he threw himself into social justice efforts full-time, as a Youth Coordinator and Associate Director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism: the largest of the many groups organized in the early 1990s to defeat the political candidacies of white supremacist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. From there, he became a community organizer in New Orleans' public housing, and a policy analyst for a children's advocacy group focused on combatting poverty and economic inequity. He has served as an adjunct professor at the Smith College School of Social Work, in Northampton, MA., and from 1999-2003 was an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute in Nashville, TN. My conversation with Anna begins at 32 mins Dr. Anna Baeth (she/her) is a critical feminist scholar and a cultural studies practitioner of sport. Her research centers on the gendering of sport spaces, the eternally moving body, and social movements and sport. A native of Frederick, MD, Baeth has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota with a concentration in Sport Sociology. While there, Baeth was a research assistant in the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport. Beyond her scholarly pursuits, Baeth is a perennial coach and advocate for cultural awareness in sport spaces. Holding an M.S. in Exercise and Sport Studies from Smith College (MA), Baeth has been an assistant lacrosse coach at Hamline University (MN), Head Field Hockey Coach at Oberlin College and Conservatory (OH), and assistant field hockey/lacrosse coach at Mt. Holyoke College (MA). In 2009, she rode her bicycle cross country with the non-profit Bike and Build to raise awareness of affordable housing issues. Baeth graduated from Swarthmore College (PA) with a degree in Sociology/Anthropology, Peace Studies, and Educational Studies, where she also founded the not-for-profit Chester Neighborhood Bike Works. In previous eras, aspiring standups had to slowly make their way up through the industry by performing in open mic nights and small venues, but now a few viral video clips on Instagram or TikTok can instantly thrust a new comedian into the spotlight.   But even if a standup has millions of followers on social media, it can be difficult to monetize their fanbase. There's no easy way to alert followers in a certain geographic area that you're performing at a local venue, and social media moderation algorithms consistently throttle reach, especially if a comedian talks about controversial topics.   Danny Frenkel and a co-founder launched Punchup in 2023 to solve these problems. His platform allows comedians to place their video content behind a gate that collects users' email addresses and locations. It also allows venues to sell tickets to events directly through Punchup. Comedians can even directly sell their standup specials on the site. Punchup has already attracted several big name comedians to its network, including  Shane Gillis and Tom Segura,    In a recent interview, Danny walked through the economics of standup comedy, explained how his experience selling ads on Meta informed Punchup's service offerings, and outlined his longterm ambitions for the platform.

In this episode of our podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Carlos Hernandez, a talented bilingual comedian and musician, who has been making waves in the South Florida entertainment scene. Carlos, at 31, reflected on how he started feeling the effects of aging, while I shared my own experiences of turning 40 and the unexpected aches and pains that come with it. We both agreed on the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and staying active, even as we joked about the struggles of getting older. The conversation then shifted to our journeys in comedy. Carlos recounted his early days in improv, inspired by iconic shows like "The Office" and comedians such as Steve Carell and Louis CK. He explained how he transitioned from a stable job in cybersecurity to pursuing comedy full-time, emphasizing the importance of believing in oneself and taking risks. We discussed the challenges of performing outside of Miami, where audiences may not be as familiar with his material, and the necessity of adapting to different crowds. Throughout the episode, we touched on the behind-the-scenes work that goes into comedy—how comedians constantly refine their material, deal with self-criticism, and navigate the pressures of performing. Carlos shared his experiences of performing alongside comedy legends in New York, highlighting moments that made him pinch himself in disbelief. This episode is a celebration of creativity, resilience, and the vibrant comedy scene in South Florida. In 2022, she was selected as the Democratic nominee for Lieutenant Governor of Florida, reflecting her stature as a leader who could speak to the needs of students, families, and educators statewide. ​Hernández-Mats has been recognized nationally for her leadership, including being honored by Miami Today's Achiever Series in 2019 for advancing public education throughout Miami-Dade County. She has addressed national organizations such as the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, the Miami Women's March, and the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's Annual Legislative Conference. ​Born and raised in Miami, Hernández-Mats is a first-generation American of Honduran descent and the first Hispanic officer elected to lead UTD. She holds a bachelor's degree in emotionally handicapped education from Florida International University and a master's degree in business management from St. Thomas University.
