Puffins are icons of the seabird world. With clown-like faces and huge, multicolored bills, they stand upright on sea cliffs along the northern oceans. Tufted Puffins nest on islands and rough coastlines, from the Channel Islands of Southern California across the north Pacific to Siberia. The Atlantic Puffin, like this one, breeds in the North Atlantic. Be sure to watch a video by Project Puffin, off the coast of Maine. Learn more at BirdNote.org.
Calling all Puffarazzi! Two years ago the RSPB’s Project Puffin put out a call for photographs of puffins with fish in their beaks. Hundreds were received and they tell a fascinating story about the lives of these iconic birds who are on the red list of conservation concern. On this episode of Nature’s Voice Jane Markham talks to Dr Ellie Owen about why she’s asking for more photos this year. And she meets Rob Hughes one of the volunteers who identified and counted all the fish in the images you sent.
For nearly fifty years, Project Puffin has been working nonstop to bring Atlantic Puffins back to a remote island off the coast of Maine. This episode, we touch down in one of the few Atlantic Puffin colonies in all of the United States, and meet the man behind the puffin resurgence.
Stephen Kress, Vice President for Bird Conservation of the National Audubon Society, Executive Director of the Seabird Restoration Program, Project Puffin; stops by to talk with BirdCallsRadio about his life-long work in seabird conservation, management, and habitat restoration.
As part of Project Puffin the RSPB wants you to join the Puffarazzi and send in your photos of puffins carrying fish in their beaks. Puffins have recently been added to the red conservation list and your photographs will help research into how they are faring during this breeding season. RSPB Northern Ireland's Liam McFaul is warden of the dramatic Rathlin Island reserve - a great place to see puffins. Jane Markham talks to him, and visitor experience officers Hazel Watson and Ric Else, about about the island's huge sea bird colony. Plus conservation scientist Ellie Owen explains what Project Puffin is all about
On today’s show: Project Puffin creator Dr. Steve Kress is our guest. Plus, we meet another slightly misnamed bird, and Mike offers help with how (or whether) to rescue backyard baby birds.
In this extraordinary story, Dr. Stephen Kress, also known as the "Puffin Man," talks about how the National Audubon Society started Project Puffin as an experimental way to restore Atlantic Puffins from extinction to their native nesting islands in the Gulf of Maine. Project Puffin has become the model of success for rebuilding seabird colonies worldwide. Animal Cafe
