This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 20th of May and here are the headlines.1. India's Global Anti-Terror Diplomacy DriveIndia has launched a major diplomatic outreach, sending seven multi-party delegations to 32 countries to highlight its fight against terrorism, particularly from Pakistani soil. Briefed by the Ministry of External Affairs, the teams will explain India's military response after the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor. PM Modi framed the doctrine as part of a global anti-terror campaign, stating there will be zero tolerance for terror sheltered by “nuclear blackmail.” The goal: convince the world not to equate India, a terror victim, with Pakistan, a terror perpetrator.2. TMC Replaces Yusuf Pathan With Abhishek BanerjeeAfter initially rejecting the Centre's move to include Yusuf Pathan in its foreign outreach delegations, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has nominated Abhishek Banerjee instead. The switch came after Union Minister Kiren Rijiju spoke to TMC chief Mamata Banerjee. Abhishek, the party's general secretary, will now join the anti-terror diplomatic push. Separately, TMC is sending its own delegation, led by Manas Bhunia, to Jammu and Kashmir to support victims of cross-border terror. Earlier, Pathan, a cricketer-turned-MP, had been named without TMC's consultation, prompting the initial protest.3. Heavy Rains Disrupt Bengaluru; Red Alert IssuedBengaluru faced severe disruptions on Tuesday after intense pre-monsoon thundershowers caused widespread flooding and traffic chaos. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for the city and Karnataka, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning through May 26. Commuters struggled, with some taking two hours to travel just 7 km. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has echoed warnings of extremely heavy rainfall and advised caution. The relentless downpour left several areas waterlogged, reigniting concerns over the city's poor infrastructure and monsoon preparedness.4. Veteran Nuclear Scientist M R Srinivasan Dies at 95M R Srinivasan, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and a pioneer of India's nuclear program, passed away on Tuesday at age 95. He is survived by his wife and daughter. Srinivasan played a key role in developing India's indigenous nuclear capabilities, working alongside legendary scientist Dr Homi Bhabha. Honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, his death marks the end of a historic era in Indian science. District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru paid floral tributes to the distinguished scientist's mortal remains.5. Netanyahu Offers Conditional End to Gaza WarIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he's willing to end the Gaza war if Hamas agrees to strict terms, including disarming. His statement comes amid rising international pressure, with the UK, France, and Canada threatening sanctions over Israel's latest Gaza offensive. Netanyahu slammed these nations for demanding a Palestinian state, calling it a reward for “genocidal attacks on Israel.” In a joint statement, the Western leaders criticized Israel's denial of humanitarian aid to Palestinians, warning that it could violate international law if continued. That's all for today. This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 3rd of April and here are today's headlines. The Trump administration's new tariffs on global trade partners, including a 27% duty on imports from India, will affect sectors like diamonds, smartphones, solar PV modules, and apparel. While certain products like critical minerals, energy products, and pharmaceuticals may be exempt, most of India's top exports, including pharmaceuticals worth $8 billion, are not. Petroleum oils derived from bituminous minerals could benefit, but tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain unchanged. These measures could reshape trade relations with India, despite limited relief for some sectors. After nearly 12 hours of debate in the Lok Sabha, the Waqf (Amendment) Bill moved to the Rajya Sabha for further discussion. BJP MPs accused the Opposition of spreading misinformation, while TMC MP Mohammad Nadimul Islam criticized the Bill as cultural vandalism, accusing the Centre of seeking excessive control over Waqf. The Lok Sabha passed the Bill with 288 votes in favor and 232 votes against. The amendment now awaits a decision in the Rajya Sabha after being tabled by Kiren Rijiju. On Thursday, Rahul Gandhi criticized the government over the border row with China and tariffs imposed by the U.S. He claimed China had taken over 4,000 sq km of Indian territory, stating that the government's actions, including a cake-cutting ceremony with the Chinese ambassador, were inappropriate. Gandhi stressed that normalcy could not proceed without restoring status quo and recovering lost land. He emphasized that the martyrdom of 20 Indian soldiers should be honored, and their sacrifices should not be undermined by diplomatic gestures. The Supreme Court reprimanded Telangana CM A. Revanth Reddy over his comments regarding bypolls in the state Assembly. The two-judge bench questioned whether they erred in letting him off last August when he made allegedly contemptuous remarks. The bench was hearing cases about the delay in disqualifying BRS MLAs who had joined the Congress. This development highlights ongoing tensions over political defections and the role of the judiciary in overseeing the actions of state lawmakers and their impact on public affairs. After the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court's decision to dismiss over 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff hired illegally by West Bengal schools, Opposition parties criticized the ruling TMC. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her disagreement, suggesting political influence from the CPI(M) and BJP. She questioned the judicial process, pointing out the contrasting decisions from different Chief Justices. The dismissal followed the 2016 illegal recruitment by the School Service Commission, requiring the affected staff to return salaries with interest, marking a significant blow to the state's education sector. That's all for today.

Ever wonder what it takes to stand firm when life throws chaos your way? In this episode of The Manly Catholic, we unpack Saint Joseph's title "Joseph Most Faithful" in our Lenten series. This isn't about Sunday lip service—Joseph lived a trust in God that didn't crack. For Catholic men, it's a wake-up call: faithfulness isn't a feeling, it's a choice. What if obedience isn't weakness, but a superpower? In this episode of The Manly Catholic, we dive into Saint Joseph's title "Joseph Most Obedient" during our Lenten series. For Catholic men, this episode reframes obedience as strength, not submission, challenging us to align our will with God's. Hit play to explore how Joseph's unwavering trust can transform your vocation—whether husband, father, priest, or discerner.Joseph was a man of action, leading his family through danger, returning to Nazareth on God's word. No whining, no negotiating—just action. Obedience wasn't a one-off for Joseph; it was his daily yes to God. I ask you: Are you obedient to your calling? Husbands, to your wives? Fathers, to your kids? Priests, to your flock? If not, we're failing. This isn't about being a doormat—it's about choosing God over ego, passions, or unjust laws.Your challenge today, men: sit with God for two minutes. Ask through Joseph's intercession, “Lord, how can I be obedient to my vocation—or discern it—today?” Listen, act, start now. Lent's our shot to grow into men like Joseph. Sounds like it's weakness... But for Joseph, it's the opposite. It's actually his superpower.""Every time God speaks, Joseph moves... He didn't hesitate. He didn't whine about it... He just said yes. That is strength, man.""We are going to be obedient to something in this life. What is it going to be? Are you going to be obedient to God? ... God will never call you to do something contrary to his will."Say yes to God's call without delay. Joseph didn't stall when God spoke—he acted. Next time you feel that nudge—forgive, step up, ditch a habit—don't negotiate. Pray, trust, and move. Imagine being woken in the dead of night by an angel, urgency ringing in your ears: "Get up, take your wife and child, and flee—someone's coming to kill your son." That's the reality Saint Joseph faced. As we journey through Lent with Saint Joseph, this episode dives deep into his title "Joseph Most Strong"—a man whose strength wasn't just in his carpenter's hands but in his unshakable resolve to protect his family and trust God when the world turned dark. This isn't a dusty saint story; it's a raw, human look at what real strength means for us men today—and how we can live it out.I'll walk you through Joseph's life—his response to Mary's pregnancy, his midnight trek to a hostile land—and ask: What would you do? When fear hits—flee, fight, freeze, or fawn—where do you land? Joseph didn't panic; he moved. And that's our cue. Today, strength might mean standing up for truth when the room's against you or pushing past exhaustion for your family. It's not about never feeling scared—it's about leaning on God and acting anyway. Here's your challenge, men: hit the gym today. Not for vanity, but because your body's a gift from God, a temple of the Holy Spirit. No more "dad bod" excuses—I've got four kids and sleep deprivation too, but we're called to be warriors for Christ. Lift something, sweat, take care of what He gave you. Pair that with a moment of prayer, asking Joseph to guide you into his kind of strength—physical and spiritual. This episode isn't just talk; it's a call to do. Push play, reflect, and step up.Products and References MentionedBuy Me a Coffee Page: Support the podcast financially at buymeacoffee.com/TMC.Social Media: Follow The Manly Catholic on X (Twitter) for updates.Email: Reach out at themanlycatholic@gmail.com.YouTube: Subscribe to the channel for video content.Scripture Reference: Psalm 27:14 – "Wait for the Lord, be strong and let your heart take courage."3 Powerful Quotes"Strength isn't just about lifting heavy loads... That is strength—courageous, decisive, putting his body between danger and those he loved.""Our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit. Take care of your body. Enough of the excuses. I'm sleep deprived too. I have four little kids. I need to get to the gym. You need to get to the gym."Act beyond the fear. Nealy four decades ago Marvin founded “Marvin's Magic” which created magic kits that swept the globe The results are that he received the Gold Medal as winner of Toy of the Year in the electronic games category of the Independent Toy Awards and was awarded the coveted Outstanding Contribution Award in the British Toy and Hobby Industry in 2015/16. And as far as magic goes, he received the Outstanding Contribution to Magic award from the British Magical Society in 2014/15. And n 2016 Marvin was awarded The Maskelyne Award from The Magic Circle for services to magic. During 2017, 2018 and 2019 Marvin was the Vice-President of The Magic Circle and in 2023 was elected President of The Magic Circle. And although he came from a home where magic was talked about all the time, he tells us that he did not care to pursue a career like his father until later in life as Marvin's Magic developed. He then got involved with The Magic Circle (TMC) and became one of the very few father/son Presidents of TMC. Find out in this episode who the others were. How can voters in different states end up with same EPIC numbers?

In Focus by The Hindu

The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has released documents showing that some voters in West Bengal have the same EPIC numbers as some voters in states like Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab. The elector photo identity card (EPIC) is a unique number, and the fact that it is unique is critical to avoid voter impersonation or other kinds of fraud. The Election Commission has attributed the duplication of EPIC numbers to a manual, decentralised system of allotting EPIC system that predated the current electoral database platform called ERONET. But the TMC and other critics are not convinced by this explanation, and the EC's own rules state that EPIC cards and numbers can only be issued to those on the electoral roll of a constituency, and can only be issued online, not manually. So, how then was EPIC number issued manually? How did a voter from Gujarat constituency, who was not from a Bengal constituency, have the same alphabets in his EPIC number as someone who was from Bengal constituency? How robust is our existing system for registering new voters and deleting voters from electoral rolls? Guest: MG Devasahayam, Coordinator, Citizens Commission on Elections. "The conversation doesn't end when you hang up the phone. That's when it begins." – Jeff Pulver At the recent TMC event, Technology Reseller News publisher Doug Green sat down with Jeff Pulver, a pioneering voice in the VoIP industry and now the driving force behind vCon. Their conversation, much like the technology it centered on, was a glimpse into the future of communication—one that redefines how we capture, analyze, and leverage conversations. 30 Years of VoIP: From VocalTech to vCon For Pulver, February 13th, 2025, marked a milestone—30 years since VocalTech introduced the first consumer VoIP application, a moment that proved voice could travel over the internet, not just phone lines. While voice-over-IP technology has been in development since 1969, Pulver sees 1995 as the true launch of the VoIP industry. Since then, the landscape has evolved in ways few could have predicted. Now, Pulver is championing vCon, an IETF standard that could revolutionize digital communication. "If you're familiar with SIP (Session Initiation Protocol), then you'll appreciate that the same people behind SIP are bringing you vCon," he said. vCon is more than just a file format—it's a way to store, analyze, and extract value from conversations across voice, email, and text. A Game Changer for Businesses of All Sizes Until recently, only large enterprises could afford advanced AI-driven conversation analysis, using sentiment and metadata to gain insights. But vCon democratizes this capability, allowing small and medium-sized businesses—or even individuals—to capture and analyze conversations effortlessly. Pulver envisions a world where conversations are no longer lost but instead serve as valuable data points. "We've been letting metadata fall on the cutting room floor. Now, we can take conversations, apply AI, and gain insights without millions in R&D costs," he explained. The First-Ever vCon Interop Event To further the adoption of this groundbreaking standard, Pulver announced the first-ever vCon Interop event, set for April 22-24, 2025, in Cape Cod. The event will feature a workshop, hands-on application development, and an industry showcase where companies can test interoperability. Additionally, he is spearheading Vinevolution, an event in Bentonville, Arkansas, on April 9, focusing on the intersection of AI, telecom, and supply chain, as well as AI Com in New York City on April 4. The Future of Conversations Pulver, who coined the term Voice on the Net (VON) in 1995, sees vCon as a natural progression of his work. "We're living in a world where AI is pervasive, and communication is evolving again," he said. "This is more than just telecom—it's about transforming how we do business." With vCon, conversations become assets, not just fleeting moments. For those who want to be part of this next wave of innovation, the opportunity starts now. As Pulver put it, "If you're an early adopter, come join us." For more details, visit pulver.com or join the vCon Foundation at pulver.com/join. (This podcast summary was done by vCon)

From being a fringe political party in 2013 to sweeping nearly half of the state s forty-two Lok Sabha seats in 2019, the BJP has gained ground in West Bengal, aided partly by the RSS s exponential growth during Mamata Banerjee's chief ministerial tenure (2011 onwards). With a consistent and concerted criticism of the TMC, the saffron camp managed to create a strong wave of anti-incumbency. So much so that the BJP s prospects of forming the next government in Bengal in 2021 seemed to have brightened considerably, while the Left, which had ruled Bengal for over three decades, appears to have been reduced to a fringe political entity. However, the controversy over the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens, combined with Banerjee s course-correction drive, designed by strategist Prashant Kishor, indicate that she might yet script a turnaround, with Bengal turning into the laboratory of a unique political experiment.  Mission Bengal: A Saffron Experiment (HarperCollins India, 2020) documents the BJP s extraordinary rise in the state and attempts to look at these developments in the historical context of Bengal from the rise of Hindu nationalism and Muslim separatism in the nineteenth century, the Partition and its fallout, the impact of developments in Bangladesh, the influence of leftist ideals on the psyche of the Bengali people, to the demographic changes in the state over the past few decades. Brothers, we live in an age of confusion. The world twists truth, waters down faith, and even distorts who Christ is. But this is nothing new. The Church has faced heresies before—falsehoods that threatened to shake the very foundation of Christianity. And one man, St. Cyril of Alexandria, refused to let the lies stand. In this episode, we dive deep into the life of a fearless defender of the faith. Cyril crushed one of the most dangerous heresies in history—the Nestorian heresy—which denied Mary as the Mother of God and distorted the truth about Christ's divinity. His battle for truth is just as relevant today as it was in 431 AD.You will learn:

EYE on NPI - TMC5272 Dual-Axis Stepper Motor Controller and Driver IC

This week's EYE ON NPI is a Texas-two-steppin' motion controller that takes your 2-axis motion control to the next level: it's ADI/Maxim/Trinamic's TMC5272 Dual-Axis Stepper Motor Controller and Driver IC. We've been checking out many of Trinamic's great stepper motor driver chips lately and this one is the latest generation, with 2 drivers, plus motion control, for advanced usage even on boards that don't need real-time GPIO toggling for steps. Trinamic is definitely not a group that 'rests on their laurels': every year they are coming out with even more improvements to their awesome stepper motor drivers. This chip has 250 pages of datasheet and each page details yet another improvement or setting that will make your mechatronics fast, silent, and efficient. What sets the TMC5272 (https://www.digikey.com/short/0mq250r7) apart? Well, the first big thing is you get double the fun with two full stepper drivers for X and Y axis support. The voltage range is 2-20V, so good for low to medium voltage motors. The tradeoff is you can only get 1.5A max peak current, 1.1A sine wave, but for most users that don't have massive steppers that is perfectly fine. There's also a lot more 'smarts' in this stepper than the ones even from a couple years ago: 8-point motion control, no-loss/no-sense-resistor current management, 2D trajectory management over two axes, encoder or reference switch inputs, sensorless standstill motion detection. Of course all the fixin's you expect from the previous generations are there: silent stepping, UART and SPI and step/dir interface, stallguard, 1 to 256 microstepping, and diagnostic output But, it's in a 3x3mm WLCSP package: this means you'll need at least a 4 layer board and plugged vias. It also means heat dissipation might be more challenging than the drivers with the big ground pads. However, a nice tradeoff is that there is internal 'lossless' current sensing, so no chunky resistors are required. The upside of a WLCSP is that we have lots more pins for tons of interfaces. Each driver can run one bipolar stepper motor, and has multiple interfaces for control. As usual there's the STEP/DIR interface. This is great for usage with older designs that expect to toggle GPIO on each step. However, the S/D pins are shared with some of the cool sensors/encoders/switches. Plus all the really cool things the chip can do are too complex to adjust with just a few GPIO, so to really get the most use you'll need to use one of the packetized interfaces: UART or SPI. UART is great if you happen to only have USB for your computer: you can always just use a USB-serial converter, and the controller can be daisy-chained for multiple drivers per UART. If you have extra GPIO and/or a dedicated SPI port, we would recommend that since it's much faster and you can easily add more chips with one chip-select per. Some of the cool things you can do via the interface include a 8-point ramp controller: instead of stepping each motor and dynamically adjusting the micro-steps for speed/precision, the TMC5272 can do it all on its own. It can also handle knowing 'where' it is on an axis bar, by using the built in homing support. Homing can be done either by using the sensorless 'StallGuard' (https://www.analog.com/en/lp/001/building-better-stepper-motor-system.html) or with reference switches. You can wire the switches directly to the TMC5272 - good if you want to have slow motion homing since you don't have to whack into the end of the axis - and then let the chip manage where it is. Then you can tell it you want to move and when you want to get there, and the TMC will take care of the rest. For ultra-accurate motion control, you can connect an external optical or magnetic encoder to the motor shaft that will tell you exactly when a step has occurred. There's also a neat back-EMF sensor that can tell when the motor has moved while 'disabled' - good to know when you will need to do another homing step after re-enabling the motor. There's also an TMC5272-EVAL-KIT eval board that you can plug-n-play for instant stepper motor usage (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/analog-devices-inc-maxim-integrated/TMC5272-EVAL-KIT/22107596), it works instantly with the TMCL IDE for trying out the various programmable settings (https://www.analog.com/en/resources/evaluation-hardware-and-software/motor-motion-control-software/tmcl-ide.html) and turn the motor via the TMCL IDE which sends UART/SPI commands over their USB driver board, so it's perfect for verifying the performance with your desired motors. If you want double the pleasure, double the fun of double-motor driving, you can pick up the ADI/Maxim/Trinamic's TMC5272 Dual-Axis Stepper Motor Controller and Driver IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/0mq250r7) from DigiKey today - it's in stock & ready to ship immediately! Place your order now & by tomorrow morning you can be step-step-stepping to the most advanced 2-axis motor controller design you've ever seen.
