The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Governor Abbott and Lieutenant Governor Patrick were invested with the power of office for the third time today. I'll take a look at what both said in their inauguration speeches about policy priorities in the 88th Legislative Session. Clearly there is still no agreement as what tax relief will look like or how significant such will be.Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.As usual there is more border and illegal immigration news and it contains more inconvenient data for Democrats who pretend they champion the poor and minorities in our country.Democrat pushes “climate change” legislation in the legislature but what do we actually know about “climate change?”And, other news of Texas.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. "Don't let the fear of losing be greater than the excitement of winning" - Robert Kiyosaki
In Episode 158 of the CounterVortex podcast, Bill Weinberg notes that the Russian Socialist Movement has issued a call for solidarity actions with anti‑war activists in Russia on Jan. 19. This is the date when left activists Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova were gunned down by far-right militants in Moscow in 2009. Today, the Vladimir Putin regime is persecuting activists such as Alexandra Skochilenko—who faces a long prison term for producing public art on an anti-war theme. Instead of responding to this call for solidarity, the ANSWER Coalition and other exponents of the "tankie" pseudo-left have called a rally against aid to Ukraine, and implicitly in support of Putin and his war aims, for Jan. 14 in locations such as New York's Times Square—perversely, in the name of Martin Luther King. The Ukraine Socialist Solidarity Campaign repudiates this pseudo-anti-war rally, urging: "No exploitation of Dr. MLK Jr. to support war criminal Putin!" Debunking the Russian propaganda that portrays Putin's aggression as a defensive move against NATO encroachment, Weinberg demonstrates that the principles propounded by Dr. King in his courageous dissent from LBJ's criminal war in Vietnam now mandate that we direct our protests at Vladimir Putin. Speeches and essays discussed: "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break the Silence" by MLK, 1967; "The Social Organization of Nonviolence" by MLK, 1959; "My Pilgrimage to Nonviolence" by MLK, 1958; "The Doctrine of the Sword," by MK Gandhi, 1920; "Looking Back on the Spanish War" by George Orwell, 1942; "I'm a Ukrainian Socialist. This Pratt on Texas Podcast Extra (42 minutes) contains the nominating speeches for Texas House speaker for the 88th Regular Session of the legislature.Much can be learned by listening to these speeches. From a conservative standpoint, Rep. Slaton and Rep. Tinderholt layout a strong case for change in House leadership. From an internal political self-interest side the others layout a case for Phelan, at least that's how I heard it (and I mean that objectively and separate from my opinion of who would make the best speaker.)Those speaking, in order, were: Rep. Cody Harris (R) – Nominating Phelan Rep. Bryan Slaton (R) – Nominating Tinderholt Rep. Angie Chen Button (R) – for Phelan Rep. Nate Schatzline (R) – for Tinderholt Rep. Tracy King (D) – for Phelan Rep. John Lujan (R) – for Phelan Rep. Toni Rose (D) – for Phelan Rep. Tony Tinderholt (R) – for himself, Tinderholt Rep. Shelby Slawson (R) – for Phelan Make up your own mind. For me, from the speeches, it was a choice between folksy he's-a-great-guy stuff and supports some Democrat policy or, those focused on making substantive changes in how we govern and empowering conservatives to pass what their constituents want them to pass.It is Secretary of State Jane Nelson presiding.www.PrattonTexas.com

Have you ever sat through a wedding reception that felt like it was never going to end? Long, boring speeches, uncle telling inappropriate jokes, and weird pauses throughout the program can totally kill your wedding vibe! This is why we're so excited to have Hawaii-based, professional MC, Nolan Hong, sharing his advice and tips on ways to make your wedding reception seamless and fun.Question: What do you get when 3 wedding experts - a professional wedding planner, photographer and MC - get together and chat?Answer: An episode packed with tips, advice, and semi-funny jokes (from Joe).Brides, grooms, family and friends - this is a great episode for you!Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadiseIntroducing: Nolan Hong, Professional MCAccording to Nolan, a wedding MC is like an orchestra conductor, responsible for the flow of the program. Their job is to cater to the couple's vision, not to be a performer or comedian.Professional MC vs a friend/family member:Professionals - have a lot more experience, can adapt and troubleshoot, and match the vibe of the couple and the audience. If timing shifts, if someone says the wrong thing, pros can quickly adjust. Pros will also stall if dinner is running behind, the same day edit needs more time, or any other timing issues arise. Friend/family members - if they're not experienced, they might not be able to read the vibe as well as a pro, and not be able to troubleshoot or react to situations that arise.Family members want to celebrate with the guests, and can often have inside jokes that others might not understand.PRO TIP: never let the audience know that anything's wrong - it takes them out of the moment.PRO TIP: if you want everyone to feel included, the MC needs to also be included. Pay attention to the speeches and what's going on so people feel like he's there in the conversation.Work with your MC and vendors to create a timeline that works for everyone.A fun twist on tradition - whenever guests clink glasses, the couple draws another couple's name to kiss, then the newlyweds copy the kiss.Shoelywed game pros and cons - Joe LOVES the game, Tessa HATES that you're holding a stinky shoe, and you don't get to see what your partner answers! Nolan engages the audience to ask their thoughts, get their reactions.Speeches - is there an ideal number? At least one from each side, Nolan's ideal is 2 each, 5 min MAX. In general, it's better to have a prepared speech unless you're great at impromptu speaking.FUN FACT: Joe MC'ed a wedding! Tessa has not… Does anyone want Tessa to MC their wedding?
