"I am an invisible man....I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids- and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me". Poet and writer Kate Camp returns to discuss another classic work of literature. This week it's Ralph Ellison's pioneering 1952 novel Invisible Man, a work that (to use the words on the Ralph Ellison Monument in Upper Manhattan) "...details the struggles of a young African-American man in a hostile society". It's a book that seems even more pertinent after the events of the past few weeks.

There’s an old joke: When the Gods wish to punish us, they give us everything we’ve ever wanted. Look at most people who win the lottery. Look at most famous people. Look at most world leaders. To borrow an expression from one particularly unhappy world leader, what do they look like? They look like they’re tired of winning. Because winning isn’t actually as fun as it seemed like it would be...and most of what we want to win turns out to not really be worth it.This was Marcus Aurelius’ point. When we look at history and other people, it’s hard not to see “how trivial the things we want so passionately are.” But what if you don’t realize that yourself? Or rather, what if you don’t realize that the presidency or a billion dollars isn’t that meaningful until after you’ve given up everything for it? After you’ve traded your marriage or your principles or your youth to get it?"Now you're free of illusions," says a character in Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. "How does it feel to be free of one's illusions?" The protagonist can only answer, "Painful and empty." In this way, we are almost lucky not to get everything we want, to not be allowed our trivial passionate yearnings. Because we are allowed to continue in ignorance. We don’t have to do the hard work on ourselves, and really look in the mirror. Of course, this is what a philosopher does all the time. Instead of hiding behind luck’s protection, or instead of continuing to lie to themselves that more, more, more will make them happy, they actually probe themselves. They question their desires. They look into the future and ask, “What would happen if all my dreams did come true? Why would I suddenly be happy then? Why can’t I be happy now instead?”

Gus T's all-time favorite book, Ellison's phenomenal work was selected for the 1953 National Book Award and has been inspected and esteemed globally for nearly 80 years. The book follows an unnamed black male as he grinds through the abuse and deception of White Supremacy (Racism). Last week's segment saw the narrator enact his plan to deceive the Brotherhood about the rage of Black Harlem residents. He schemed to use Sybil, a White female member of the Brotherhood, to solicit information about the group's activities, but she gives up no info and is more interested in getting drunk and being raped by a black "buck." The protagonist abandons his plan and the White Woman to respond to a full scale "riot" where black residents are looting stores and burning property in response to White Terrorism. The main character concludes that the White Brotherhood planned for this riot, and the ensuing black death required to restore "peace." #ReadingIsMoreImportantThanWatchingTelevision INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943#

Brother Tarp shares that he was incarcerated for two decades for telling a (White) man "no." Not long after hearing Brother Tarp, the protagonist is accused of trying to subvert the Brotherhood. Brother Wrestrum, also a black member, reported to the White members that the main character had sinister motives for self-aggrandizement, not universal brotherhood. The Whites decide to banish the protagonist from his Harlem office and change his assignment to "the woman question."
