The FIFA World Cup is nearly upon us, and the All Whites are in the midst of their final preparations. They have one last pre-season match, going up against England tomorrow after Wednesday's disappointing performance against Haiti. As a result of a hamstring injury picked up last month, midfielder Ryan Thomas isn't involved in either warm up games – though he's confident he'll be right by the World Cup opener against Iran. It's his first World Cup, and he told Piney he didn't think he was going to be here a few years ago, so he's taking everything in stride. Deception by Omission: A serious exploration of prisons and Racism must account for the systemic forces that built them. This book's failure to center COINTELPRO, the torture legacy of Chicago's Jon Burge, or the raw profitability of caging Black men suggests Alexander is guilty of a whole lot of lying. The "Basically" Deception & The Audio Patch: Alexander claims the 10th Anniversary edition is "basically" the same book, yet we discovered she began remixing her sloppy book almost immediately. Last week, Gus noted that in 2010 she wrote that 1/3 of state inmates are violent offenders. But in the 2012 audiobook, she boosted the number to 50%. Which is it? 2. The COINTELPRO Foundation: Last week, Alexander again discussed the necessary use of police informants to snitch on drug users and violent offenders. She explained that the information they relay may or may not be true and they can easily be manipulated to lie on behalf of law enforcement. These are all hallmarks of the FBI campaign Alexander willfully omits from her original printing. 3. Flagrant Lies: Alexander again says that at some random point in time following the 1970s, most people classified as White in this part of the world disavowed the practice of Racism/White Supremacy. Again, Alexander knows this is a lie because her White relatives booted her White mom out of the family for marrying a black dude. Alexander lived in a Racially Restricted Region of Oregon in the 1980s. OPENING My learning curve about segregation did not happen all at once. I grew up in a Navy family and attended Catholic schools. We moved often. Different states. Different bases. Different communities. But strangely… many things stayed the same. Most of the schools I attended as a child were almost entirely white. In Virginia, in 1962, I remember having my first non-white classmate… a Hispanic girl. Later that same year, we moved back to Texas. Again, I attended Catholic schools that were overwhelmingly white. But by 1964, after we had settled in Houston, I went to San Antonio to attend high school, and I began noticing something larger than classrooms. The city itself seemed divided. Whites lived primarily on the north side. Blacks on the east side. Mexican-Americans on the west and south sides. And the schools reflected those invisible boundaries. At the time, it simply seemed normal. Years later, I realized I had been watching the geography of segregation. (pause) This is Hidden History of Texas. Episode 90: Separate Schools, Separate Futures. EDUCATION AND THE TEXAS MAP In Texas, schools have always been more than places of learning. They reflected power. Economics. Geography. Race. And opportunity. For generations, where a child lived often determined the quality of education they received. Not officially, perhaps. But practically. And sometimes intentionally. After the Civil War, Texas entered Reconstruction along with the rest of the South. In theory, formerly enslaved people had access to education. In reality, separate systems quickly emerged. Black Texans were relegated to schools that often had few, if any resources. Churches became classrooms. Communities raised money themselves. Teachers were underpaid. Buildings were overcrowded. Supplies were outdated or nonexistent. But education represented something larger: advancement, independence, and hope. SEGREGATED TEXAS By the early 20th century, segregation in Texas had become deeply embedded. Sometimes through laws. Sometimes through custom. Sometimes simply through where people were allowed to live. Entire cities developed around racial geography. In San Antonio, those lines were easy to see. North side. East side. West side. South side. Different neighborhoods. Different churches. Different schools. Different expectations. Even Catholic education reflected these divisions. In San Antonio there was St. Peter Claver Academy, founded in 1888 as the first African American Catholic parish in Texas. They competed separately in athletics and academics. As students, we simply accepted this as part of everyday life. Looking back now, it becomes clear how deeply separation had been normalized. THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Texas segregation was never simply Black and white. Mexican-American communities experienced many of the same barriers. In some Texas towns, children attended so-called “Mexican schools.” These schools were often poorly funded and overcrowded. Students were frequently discouraged from speaking Spanish. Some were punished for it. In 1948, a major Texas court case challenged these practices: Delgado v. Bastrop Independent School District. The ruling declared that Mexican-American students could not legally be segregated into separate schools solely because of ethnicity. But as often happened in Texas and across America… changing laws did not instantly change attitudes. COLLEGES AND QUIET BARRIERS Even higher education reflected these divisions. Colleges across Texas remained segregated well into the 1960s. Official barriers slowly began to fall. But social barriers remained. People often stayed within familiar communities. Familiar churches. Familiar schools. Familiar neighborhoods. Official segregation can end with a court ruling. But social separation often lasts much longer. A NATION OF REGIONS One thing that shaped my perspective was movement. Because of being raised in a military family, and later my time in the Coast Guard, I lived in multiple regions of the country. I saw firsthand that segregation and division were not unique to Texas. America itself often functioned as a collection of separate worlds. Different regions. Different customs. Different assumptions about race, class, and belonging. But Texas had its own version. Its own geography. Its own history. And its own invisible boundaries. SCHOOLS AS MAPS OF OPPORTUNITY Schools became mirrors of larger systems. Housing patterns shaped districts. Property values shaped funding. Economic divisions reinforced educational divisions. In many ways, schools became maps of opportunity. And those maps often reflected decades of earlier decisions. Some districts flourished. Others struggled. Some communities had modern facilities and expanding programs. Others fought simply to maintain basic resources. And while Texas today is far more integrated than the Texas of the 1950s or 1960s… echoes of those older systems still remain. CLOSING Today, many Texas schools are far more diverse than the ones I attended as a child. And in many communities, students who once would have been separated now learn side by side. That is real progress. Important progress. But history leaves impressions on places. On neighborhoods. On school districts. On expectations. And on people. Sometimes the most important hidden history is not found in dramatic events… but in ordinary routines. The school a child attended. The side of town where they lived. The opportunities they were given… or denied. Because in Texas, for generations, separate schools often meant separate futures. This is Hidden History of Texas. I'm Hank. Thank you for listening.

We asked for a stopwatch.You told us we couldn't do something, and we treated it like a dare. You said only White men could dominate a field, and Black America replied, “Hold my Colt 45.”Jack Johnson didn't become heavyweight champion because someone checked a diversity box. He didn't win a title reserved for Black fighters. He became the heavyweight champion, full stop. He didn't climb a separate mountain. He climbed the only one that mattered and planted his flag right in the snow.Same with Vanessa Williams. She didn't become “Miss Black America Who Deserves Recognition Too.” She became Miss America. Period. The adjective came later, added by people who needed to turn excellence into a category.No Affirmative Action. No equity committee. No apology tour. Just raw competition and the uncomfortable result that Black excellence, when unleashed, didn't politely stop at parity.That terrified Democrats.Why the Left Couldn't Let Merit SurviveHere's the dirty secret no sociology department will admit: Black Americans were dangerous to the Left's narrative.We were proof that the system could be beaten. That barriers could be smashed. That excuses were optional. That the human will mattered more than the grievance spreadsheet.Give Black Americans a White benchmark and we didn't aim to match it. “We've learned how to tolerate acts of violence, acts of widespread death, disease — that other developed nations simply don't tolerate. And that tolerance manifesting in myriad political failures — all of which go back to our refusal to maturely deal with mortality and issues of grief.” — David Masciotra Earlier this week, we talked to Ece Temelkuran about her book Nation of Strangers, a manifesto about strangers finding one another. But for the cultural critic David Masciotra, strangerdom is the problem rather than the solution. Contemporary America, he argues in his new essay A Country of Strangers, has become a place of death, despair and indifference. Masciotra takes his cue from Albert Camus' 1942 novella The Stranger. Camus' Meursault — the narrator of The Stranger — is a man completely detached from meaning. He attends his own mother's funeral without feeling anything. He murders an Arab man on a beach without motive. He faces his execution with a shrug. Masciotra's argument is that the United States has become Meursault writ large. America's failure is existential rather than political. It is a failure to mourn — a sustained refusal to engage with death, grief, and the weight of history that produces a society of strangers who cannot connect with one another across race, class, or geography. So is Masciotra right? Are we all Meursault now? What can Albert Camus teach us about America? Five Takeaways •       Meursault and America: The Same Detachment: Camus' The Stranger is narrated by Meursault — a man who attends his mother's memorial without feeling, murders an Arab man on a beach without motive, and faces execution with indifference. The novel, Camus said, was his attempt to detail “man's confrontation with absurdity in its nakedness.” Masciotra's argument: this is America now. A country that has adopted Meursault's emotional posture toward mass death. Columbine stopped the nation in 1999. Mass shootings now barely register. That is not political failure. It is existential failure. •       A Failure to Mourn: Masciotra's central thesis: America's deepest problem is its refusal to mourn. Not guilt — he is careful to distinguish mourning from guilt. You can have a national memory that reckons with both what you celebrate and what you grieve. If the Founding Fathers are worth preserving in active memory, so are the people they enslaved. Never properly dealing with the Civil War allowed the resurgence of white supremacist movements. Never properly mourning mass shootings allows them to accelerate. The failure to grieve is not sentimental. It is political. •       Is Meursault Autistic? The Spectrum Reading: Some contemporary critics read Meursault as someone on the autism spectrum — a man whose emotional detachment reflects neurodivergence rather than moral failure. Masciotra is skeptical. His reading: Camus' portrait is one of moral refusal, not neurological condition. The distinction matters for the American parallel: if America's indifference is a structural feature rather than a disease, the remedy is not therapy but political and cultural change. You can't medicate a country into empathy. •       The Colonial Murder and the Racial Hierarchy: Meursault murders an Arab man in French Algeria and feels nothing. Some critics fault Camus for not making colonialism more explicit. Masciotra defends Camus: Meursault doesn't care about anything, including his own mother's death. His indifference to his Arab victim's humanity is the point, not an evasion. The parallel to America: the hierarchy of victims, where Black Americans have historically ranked lower in the eyes of law and institution. David Shipler's 1997 book A Country of Strangers documented the same failure of Black and white Americans to actually talk to one another. •       You Are the First Close White Friends I've Had: Masciotra's friend Alana — a highly educated, cultured Black woman who lived in Chicago — once told him and his wife: “You are the first close white friends I've had.” They said the same back. This, Masciotra argues, is the country of strangers in daily life. Not the horror stories of overt racism. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Three North Korean prisoners to receive human rights award Three Korean missionaries detained for more than a decade in North Korea will receive the Graciela Fernandez Meijide Human Rights Award in August in absentia, reports International Christian Concern. The three men — missionary Choi Chun-gil, age 70, missionary Kim Jong-Uk, age 62, and Pastor Kim Kuk-gi, age 72— were helping North Korean defectors and underground churches in Northeast China before North Korean agents arrested them and took them to jails inside North Korea.  North Korea sentenced the three men to life in a North Korean labor camp. The South Korean government has repeatedly called for the missionaries' release. Analysts estimate that more than 30,000 Christians are currently suffering in these camps where they are overworked, starved, and tortured. Not surprisingly, North Korea denies the existence of such camps. According to Open Doors, North Korea is the most oppressive country worldwide for Christians. Vatican: Homosexual couples are not guilty of sin The new Vatican synod report published May 5th has just dropped a bombshell, reports LifeSiteNews.com. It said, “Sin, at its root, does not consist in the same-sex couple relationship.” Instead, the document suggests sin is merely a lack of faith in God. Homosexual relationships are presented by the Vatican through glowing testimonies. The document takes specific aim at Courage, a Catholic group established for the support of those with homosexual attraction who wish to live chastely and in accord with Catholic Church teaching.  And the report openly questions whether such unions could be considered analogous to marriage.  It asks whether homosexual “relationships” can be thought of as equal “to heterosexual conjugal union,” despite “the evident impossibility of procreation.” This is not a fringe document. It comes from a synodal study group operating with Vatican approval. But Leviticus 18:22 could not be more clear. “Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.” US launches strikes on two Iranian targets On May 7th,  U.S. Central Command confirmed military action within the Strait of Hormuz, saying American forces intercepted “unprovoked Iranian attacks” and struck back amid claims by Tehran that the Trump administration had violated a fragile ceasefire, reports NewsNation.com. According to Fox News, U.S. officials said Qeshm Port in the Strait of Hormuz and the port city of Bandar Abbas were struck. Plus, Iran's Bandar Kargan naval checkpoint in Minab was also hit. CENTCOM officials said Iran launched missiles, drones, and small boats on three U.S. guided-missile destroyers in the Strait of Hormuz headed to the Gulf of Oman. In response, U.S. forces “eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this. RUBIO:  “As President Trump has said, and the facts clearly bear out, the United States of America holds all the cards. There is no scenario here in which, if they decide to join a ladder of escalation, they wind up getting the last say. “But our preference is for these Straits [of Hormuz] to be opened to the way they're supposed to be open, back to the way it was. Anyone can use it. No mines in the water. Nobody paying tolls. That's what we have to get back to, and that's the goal here.” Mark Hamill of “Star Wars” posted image of dead President Trump Mark Hamill, the actor best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the original “Star Wars” trilogy of the 1970s and '80s, posted an image on May 6th that got the White House's attention, reports The Western Journal. The image, posted to Hamill's account on the social media platform BlueSky, showed President Donald Trump lying in a grave, hands folded, with a headstone that read “Donald J. Trump, 1946-2024.” Hamill wrote, “If only he should live long enough to witness his inevitable devastating loss in the midterms, be held accountable for his unprecedented corruption, impeached, convicted & humiliated for his countless crimes. Long enough to realize he'll be disgraced in the history books, forevermore.” Meanwhile, on the social media platform X, the official White House Rapid Response account, called Hamill “one sick individual.” Then, the White House linked Hamill-style rhetoric to other disturbing events, saying, “These Radical Left lunatics just can't help themselves. This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President.” Texas Governor pressures waterpark to cancel Muslim-only event A planned celebration of a Muslim-only day at the Epic Waters waterpark in Grand Prairie, Texas has been canceled after backlash over religious discrimination, reports Fox4News. The Epic Waters waterpark had planned to hold a private event throughout the park on June 1st to celebrate Eid al-Adha, the feast of sacrifice and the second of two main festivals in Islam. It honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac as an act of obedience to God's command. When The Worldview first reported the story of the Muslim-only, waterpark-wide event, Cathy Blake of Fate, Texas emailed the Epic Waters leadership. She wrote, “I see you are hosting a Muslim celebration and closing the park to non-Muslims, which is religious discrimination. But, since you probably don't see it that way, and are wanting to be inclusive, I'm wondering what day the park will be available for only Jews or only Christians as those two religions are two of the most practiced religions in America, alongside Islam. Please let me know the date so I can plan my summer accordingly.” When Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott heard about the event, he sent a letter to the City of Grand Prairie in which he threatened to pull $530,000 in public safety grants if the city held the event. The letter states that the event was being advertised as "Muslim Only" before changing its advertisements to state only a requirement of a modest dress code would be enforced. Governor Abbott wrote, "The event purports to be public-facing and discriminatory at the same time: All Muslims—but only Muslims—may attend. An event at a city-owned pool that was publicly and indiscriminately advertised as ‘Whites only' would surely violate the Constitution.” On May 6, officials with the City of Grand Prairie wrote, "After further review and in the best interest of the City of Grand Prairie, the June 1st event at Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark has been canceled."
