We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS This weekend marks 60 years since the infamous "Bloody Sunday" march in Selma, Alabama where dozens of black females, elderly and children were beaten, trampled by horses, and shackled. , During the melee, the late John Lewis was pummeled on Edmund Pettus Bridge, which was deliberately named after a Klu Klux Klan member. Importantly, after much public debate and White hand-ringing, the bridge remains named after a Klansman in 2025. Organizers of this weekend's anniversary march openly question how much progress has been made since that day of White Terrorism. In Germany, a half dozen White men were arrested and charged with plotting to overthrow the German government and kidnap the health minister. Gus selected this book in spite of numerous book club listeners announcing their hopes that we read a book on this 1970's cult. This infamous mass murder has countless parallels to our recent literary selections - Columbine, Michael Swango, and The Hart murder-suicide. The Rev. Jim Jones, a White man born in Indiana, took a thousand people from California to Guyana, South America. On November 18th, 1978, Jones killed nearly all 1,000 of his mostly black followers and Congressman Leo Ryan. A few were shot, but most were poisoned with cyanide, just like "Double-0 Swango." For nearly half a century, this event has been conventionally understood as a bunch of brainwashed loons following a White charlatan to their demise in the jungle. Meiers' work suggests something far more nefarious. Last week, Meiers gave an abridged presentation on Nazi Germany. He emphasized that Adolf Hitler and the Third Reich were explicitly focused on Racial Purity and White Supremacy throughout the universe. Stunningly, Meiers details Hitler's obsession with the occult and (African) religious practices. Following the Nazi defeat, many Nazis/Germans crossed the pond and helped Whites in North America form the Central Intelligence Agency. Some of the White so-called Jews who absconded from the White Terrorism of Hitler were the Layton family. Ilyon Woo, non-white female, visits Elliot Bay Books in Seattle, Washington to promote her brand new book: Master Slave Husband Wife (2023). Gus T. learned about this book when searching for books published the previous calendar year. Woo's work of non-fiction made a number of lists for best non-fiction of the year. The book examines William and Ellen Craft, a pair of 19th century black slaves in the state of Georgia. Ellen Craft is the product of rape and has a White father. Consequently, she is pale enough to be accepted as a White person - so called "passing." After years of White Terrorism and torture on a Georgia slave plantation, William and Ellen take 4 days to concoct an escape plan. Ellen uses her lack of melanin and a fancy pair of pants to fake being an elderly White Man. William is "his" faithful negro slave, and the courageous pair makes haste for the so called north. Woo gives lots of details - including the northern speaking tours William and Ellen gave with the fellow slaves and orators Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown. Even once the two were miles from the plantation, they could be stolen at any time. And because melanin deficient Ellen is "White presenting," her being married to dark-skinned William means that northern Whites often think she's a 19th century White Woman shacking up with a negro male. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Sean David Long. Gus found his 2023 dissertation: "The Politics of White Violence." The report provides a wealth of information for non-white people to re-evaluate what it means to be racially classified as White. Dr. Long's work suggests that a fundamental aspect of what it means to be White is the practice and promotion of violence to maintain White Power. His report examines events like the January 6th insurrection in Washington, D.C. and White teen Kyle Rittenhouse gunning down protesters in Wisconsin. We'll discuss the role of White Women, Racist Jokes, and if Dr. Long's research suggests White people are not going to voluntarily desist from the practice of White Supremacy. Dr. Long found a correlation between Donald J. Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and an increase in hate crimes in the US. Two concurrent events within this pattern include the June 16, 2015 announced that Trump was running for the White House. On the following day, June 17th, a White Terrorist killed 9 black worshipers in Charleston, South Carolina. One of the victims was State Senator Rev. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Warren Read. A White male, writer and educator, Mr. Warren is a Washington state native. Once again, James Loewen's Sundown Towns (Racially Restricted Regions) is instructive because many areas of Washington state and Minnesota where hostile to and/or prohibited the presence of black people. Read wrote about his White Grandfather, Louis Dondino, who participated in lynching thee black males in Duluth, Minnesota in 1920. Dondino served a brief stint in prison for his conviction of rioting (not murder) in this case. Read's book, The Lyncher in Me, is his account of this grizzly act of White Terrorism and a biography of his White (Racist?) family's criminal history - which includes child rape. Gus found this ironic considering the reason Dondino and other Whites lynched three black dudes is because the privileged trio was accused of raping a White girl - which turned out to be a lie. Read describes growing up in a mostly White Washington state enclave. However, he was "terrorized" in middle school by a loudmouth, thick-armed, kinky-haired black female. Read starts his memoir suggesting that he, a "gay" White dude, is also libel to be lynched or assassinated like Matthew Shephard. Contrary to popular opinion, Shephard is not a hate crime victim. Rather, this White dude was killed in a drug deal gone bad. After some prodding, Dr. Ward conceded that he has one non-white biological parent and one White biological parent. He was adopted by a black family and was not informed about his biological parents until much later in life. He mentioned that because of his pale complexion, he was not subjected to the same types of abuse as darker black males when he was alone. Dr. Ward was prepared to discuss how other black people have challenged his status as “black.” He did not provide one example of someone classified as White practicing Racism against him. A professor of African and African American Studies and a faculty affiliate in American culture studies and sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Ward studies “the legacies of racial violence, representative social control, and the racial politics of youth justice.” He's also a member of the Reparative Justice Coalition, which, as Gus understands it, works to recognize and remember acts of White Terrorism perpetuated against black people. Gus heard Dr. Ward's commentary regarding the 1894 lynching of John Buckner in Valley Park, Missouri. Somehow the conversation veered to black Buffalo Police officers' recent allegations of Racism from their White officers. There were similar accusations against fire departments and enforcement agencies across the US this week. In fact, just before this program aired live, Gus returned to Merriweather Library to hear Sheriff John Garcia discuss "diversity" in the Buffalo Sheriff's Office. In truth, the exchange was almost exclusively about the lack of black and non-white Sheriffs in Erie County. Sheriff Garcia maintained few black people take the exam to qualify for being a sheriff. Importantly, some in attendance pointed out the testing sights are not always located near potential applicants. The executive director of MORE2 (squared)u, McDonald is a White Woman WHO worked with Lamont McIntyre's mother nearly 20 years ago. Mr. McIntyre was wrongfully convicted of a double murder in 1994 - he was 17 7at the time, and served 23 years in prison before receiving being released with a "certificate of innocence." McDonald says that Mr. McIntyre's mother was about to have a breakdown worrying about her son during those decades. This made her curious about the McIntyre case. Her inquisitiveness led to Roger Golubski, a retired Kansas City Kansas police detective who toted a badge and gun for more than a quarter century. McIntyre's mother alleged that Golubski attempted to extort her for sexual favors. When she refused, he falsely arrested her child for double murder where many of the the victims's relatives loudly announced that the wrong person was convicted. The Katherine Massey Book Club @ The C.O.W.S. hosts the 3rd study session on the late Bill Russell's 1979 publication, Second Wind: The Memoirs of an Opinionated Man. Russell passed away on July 31st of this year at the age of 88. The NBA titan won eleven championships and an Olympic gold medal and was elected to the basketball Hall of Fame. However, he is most known for his counter-racist efforts - which includes lots of writing. Importantly, Russell's memoir is co-authored by award-winning White historian Taylor Branch, so any omission of relevant information or minimizing of White Terrorism should be thought of as deliberate Racism by Branch. Last week, Russell described a pivotal moment of his childhood. Oakland Public Library was Russell's sanctuary and the Bay Area transplant devoured books. While flipping through a history book, Russell read a passage that insisted slavery was the best thing to ever happened to ignorant, primitive black people. This paragraph gnawed at him for weeks and lit a simmering anger in Russell about the mistreatment of black people. Tragically, Russell sounds just like 21st century non-white children when he describes "bitter" White teachers forced to labor at Oakland's McClymonds High School. He also details how his grandfather, "The Old Man," was dumbfounded upon attending his first NBA game years later. Seeing his black grandson coach a team where White men had to follow Russell's commands, scrambled his brain computer. Our first chinwag was in 2013, in the midst of the Trayvon Martin murder trial, when we discussed his spectacular work, The Beast in Florida, A History of Anti-black Violence. Dr. Moore gives a scholarly account of decades of organized terrorism against black residents of the sunshine state. He has a whole chapter on the 1923 Rosewood massacre, where an entire town of black people were violently assaulted and forcibly removed from their property. Dr. Dunn recently visited his own land in Rosewood, where he plans to recognize the White Terrorism from a century past. This is our concluding session on this book, and it absolutely qualifies as the saddest book Gus has read. Essie Mae's confusion and father hunger for a child raping White Supremacist is... a sorrow-filled existence. Additionally, the lynchings and gender-specific targeting of black males are such traumatic, constant events in Essie Mae's life, readers can mark time by tracking black male corpses. Last week, Essie Mae described moving out to the "racial paradise" of California. By the time she arrives west, her husband Julius is dead at at the age of 46. He had asthma and self-medicated with alcohol to compensate for the constant White Terrorism he experienced - including being bludgeoned by enforcement officers. Essie Mae returned to southern California a widow and settled in View Park, known as the "black Beverly Hills." Ms. Essie Mae neglected to inform readers that View Park began as a subdivision that excluded anyone not White. A small number of dark people were allowed to purchase housing in the area in the 1960's. Whites quickly exited. By the early 20th century, Whites began returning to "gentrify" the "black Beverly Hills." After Julius's death, Essie Mae decides to tell her children about their real grandpa. They alternate between being bored about their White ancestry and logically describing him as a raping White Supremacist who terrorized their grandmother, Carrie Butler. They got meet him in person, and conclude that he's "not too bad." Julius was denied the chance to share his view of Strom Thurmond with his own children. On Monday, a 27-year-old black male Dunkin' Donuts manager plead guilty to felony manslaughter after he punched a Suspected Race Soldier who fell and died. Last spring, the White man repeatedly called Corey Pujols a nigger after complaining about poor service. Pujols knocked him out permanently, but was promptly shackled and charged. This is another tragic illustration of why non-white people must maintain composure in the workplace.
