POPULARITY
Blogs evolved from a gathering place for people looking to waste time into a prime platform for content creators: from early podcasts to sketch comedy to low-budget/high quality music videos. And thanks to those very same blogs, artists figured out just how far the internet reached. Curren$y, Nicki Minaj and Dom Kennedy, once seen as niche, regional acts, found fans from coast to coast and then some. For the first time, artists could get free distribution, create a very loyal fanbase and pull in millions of dollars, without the weight of a label behind them.
Nick has a virtual discussion with Rik Cordero and Hafsah Mijinyawa from the A2 Tech Film Showcase to discuss the history and inspiration of their showcase, this year’s curation, silver linings of going virtual, and what the films mean for our times.

Robin Milling hosts a special conversation with director Rik Cordero for the Big Vision Empty Wallet (BVEW) screening of his new film, Starla starring his real life wife, Nancy Mitchell. BVEW creates opportunities for independent artists to showcase their work. Cordero is known for his unique music video projects with such top hip-hop artists as Jay-Z, The Roots, Wu-Tang Clan, Wale and Nas. Starla is his third feature, having also directed the documentary The World Is Watching, about the culture of York City high school basketball, narrated by Spike Lee. Rik tells Robin how directing Mitchell in such an emotional role of a mother who loses her only daughter during a botched surgery, only helped to strengthen their relationship. Nancy wasn't as thrilled with acting underwater as she actually went through shock and hypothermia in the freezing waters of the Hamptons in March! His next project will be a supernatural thriller so stay tuned... As you can tell from the title, this was our first-ever live show. We streamed our show live via ustream.tv and had a chance to get some real-time interaction with our audience via the chat. The whole experience was tight and we hope to do more shows in a live format in the future. The episode got off to a good start as we caught up with Capital Z, the winner from Episode #58, to talk about his track "Family Ties", and his loyal fan base (he set a HoodHype record for most votes). After that, we had a chance to speak with Brooklyns own Joell Ortiz. Right from the jump we took the opportunity to squash any misinformation surrounding our previous interview with Bishop Lamont. With that aside, we got into what projects Joell will be dropping next, what hes looking for in his next label situation, working with Rik Cordero, his hoop game and more. After hollerin at Joell, we got to speak with another one of Brooklyns elite, Buckshot from the Duck Down camp. Buck gave us the scoop on The Form --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
