Daunte Wright was shot and killed during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center almost three years ago. It happened during the trial of Derek Chauvin. As Minneapolis was having a racial reckoning, the death of Daunte Wright sparked one in Brooklyn Center too. Since Daunte's Wright's death, the city hired a new police chief, who has since retired. And Brooklyn Center has worked on proposing new policing reforms. Now it's turning to it's neighbor, Brooklyn Park. The two cities have launched a new initiative, “Two Brooklyn's, One Vision.” Marcellus Davis is the Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Manager for the City of Brooklyn Park and Cordell Wiseman is the Recreation Director for the City of Brooklyn Center. They both joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer to talk about how the two cities are intertwined and the goals of their initiative.

After demanding a trade earlier this month, Kevin Durant is still a Brooklyn Net and the Toronto Raptors look to be one of the frontrunners to get him. On todays podcast we talk to the Raps play by play announcer, Matt Devlin and get his perspective on the matter. Matt talks to us Brooklyns high asking price, comparing it to the Rudy Robert trade to the Timberwolves, and explains to us why he thinks the return for Durant will be lower than expected… and it might not happen any time soon. The three debate on who they would trade for the 34 year old superstar and question how close the team is to another championship with or without Kevin Durant. Kevin Durant in with no Kyrie and injured Harden was the epitome of clutch!!!
You probably have already heard about the Boston fan who allegedly fired a water bottle at Kyrie Irving last night after the Brooklyn Nets victory over the Boston Celtics. What an idiot! What is wrong with people? Good news is he's been arrested for assault and battery and will be going on trial for his ignorant and immature stupidity. This is absolutely what should happen too and I applaud the Boston authorities for doing the right thing. Now, there was an another immature actor on the court and that was Brooklyns' Kyrie Irving who subtly went over to the Boston Logo and stepped on the face of "Lucky", the character in the logo and then let his foot rub and drag across the face of the character. No accident. Fully intentional. C'mon now! How foolishly immature can you you be? You're a professional and the least you can do is respect the other team's home court. Enough Kyrie, enough. Grow up.

Man könnte sogar sagen: Filmreif ;).

Famous Men Who Never Lived (Tin House, 2019) is set in two Brooklyns. In one, people ride in trams; in the other, they take subways. In one, the swastika is a symbol of luck; in the other, it signifies hate. In one, science fiction is literature; in the other, it’s considered mere genre. Helen (Hel) Nash, the main character in K Chess’s debut novel, comes from the other Brooklyn—the one with trams and innocuous swastikas. She is a refugee from a nuclear war, one of 156,000 Universally Displaced Persons who escape through an experimental gate from her timeline to ours. Like many refugees, she’s having a hard time adjusting. Not only has she lost friends and family—including her son, who she can never see again—but she faces a new world of unfamiliar laws, customs, and culture. It doesn’t help that most people in our timeline eye UDPs with mistrust. Hel’s and our world diverged around 1910. “It was fun to think about all the things that happened since nineteen hundred,” Chess says in her New Books interview. “For instance, light beer wasn’t invented until the 70s, so that might not exist in the other world. There are many things that could have gone very differently, both in large-scale world history and in small-scale inventions.” Instead of trying to assimilate, Hel becomes obsessed with establishing a museum to preserve her vanished timeline’s art and culture. She is fascinated—and frustrated—by the loss of the thinkers, artists and inventors who accomplished great things in her world but died prematurely in ours. “There was something especially poignant,” Hel thinks, “about knowing exactly what these men and women might have accomplished if only history had proceeded the way it ought to have.” In this episode, Chess discusses, among other things, why she doesn't like her book’s title, New York's resonance as a city of immigrants, human beings' attachment to the past, and how she built an alternate world through small but important details.
Host Jean Alerte speaks to Brooklyns own DJ Olivia Dope about starting off as a trained dancer at the age of 3 and transitioning into the male dominated DJ industry.
If you're hearing this episode around the time it comes out, it means I'm taking some time off after the birth of my son. I've recorded these ahead of time and most likely will not be available on social media for the next few weeks, but you'll still get The Story Behind twice a week if you're subscribed to the podcast. Consider this series to be like a substitute teacher. We won't go as in-depth as in previous episodes, but we'll briefly touch of a number of different topics in each episode. This series focuses on Billy Joel's song “We Didn't Start the Fire” and the headline-making events and people he mentions. Some content may not be suitable for all listeners. I'm your host, Emily Prokop, and this is The Story Behind We Didn't Start The Fire: 1955-1956. Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal has been called many things over the years. A cesspool, an industrial dumping ground, a blemish. But, our guest on this edition of Cityscape says the 1.8 mile canal is also one of the most important waterways in the history of New York Harbor. Joseph Alexiou is a licensed New York City tour guide, and the author of Gowanus: Brooklyn’s Curious Canal.

This little 5 minute jaunt takes us dawn a haunting what-if scenario where Peet is crowned Brooklyns king, only to be dethroned by Jeff a week later.

As you can tell from the title, this was our first-ever live show. We streamed our show live via ustream.tv and had a chance to get some real-time interaction with our audience via the chat. The whole experience was tight and we hope to do more shows in a live format in the future. The episode got off to a good start as we caught up with Capital Z, the winner from Episode #58, to talk about his track "Family Ties", and his loyal fan base (he set a HoodHype record for most votes). After that, we had a chance to speak with Brooklyns own Joell Ortiz. Right from the jump we took the opportunity to squash any misinformation surrounding our previous interview with Bishop Lamont. With that aside, we got into what projects Joell will be dropping next, what hes looking for in his next label situation, working with Rik Cordero, his hoop game and more. After hollerin at Joell, we got to speak with another one of Brooklyns elite, Buckshot from the Duck Down camp. Buck gave us the scoop on The Form --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
